Megadeth Principals Finish Buddy Holly Song

More than 40 years after Buddy Holly's death and with the blessing of his widow,
two former Megadeth members joined a Mesa, Ariz.-based vocalist to record an
unfinished Holly tune, "That Makes It Tough." Guitarist Marty Friedman and
bassist
Dave Ellefson, who both live in Scottsdale, recently backed vocalist Steve
Richards
on a version of the song, one of the last Holly wrote before his death in a
1959 plane crash at age 22.

"I felt that song, whoever records it, would probably have a hit on their hands,
because it's a great song," Holly's widow, Maria Elena Holly, told the East
Valley Tribune. "When I heard [Richards] sing, I knew it would be perfect for
him." Holly had informally recorded the song on what are known as "The Apartment
Tapes."

Richards recorded the vocals recently in Nashville, Tenn., with a distinctive
country twang. When Friedman and Ellefson joined in at the Mesa studio, they
gave it more of a rock'n'roll feel. "Buddy would have rocked it out," said
Friedman,
who describes himself as a huge Holly fan. "It's almost like he's rising from
the dead. It's my connection to the legend."

As previously reported, a severe injury suffered in January by Megadeth
founder/frontman
Dave Mustaine brought about the end of the veteran metal group after 19 years.
The band's remaining members -- Ellefson, Friedman, drummer Jimmy DeGrasso,
and guitarist Al Pitrelli -- announced in June that they would soldier on under
a new name with a new vocalist.
