"Buddy Holly Tribute"
Charles Hardin Holley, 1936-1959
Buddy Holly and The Crickets first hit came in February '57 with
'That'll Be The Day'. By the end of '57 the band had their second hit
with 'Oh Boy' and Holly's 'solo' disc 'Peggy Sue'. Their next hit
'Maybe Baby' followed their first tour abroad to Australia in
February '58. In October of '58 Buddy Holly recorded with strings for
the first time: 'True Love Ways'. On February 2nd '59 Buddy Holly
performed at 'The Winter Dance Party' in Clear Lake, Iowa. Other acts
on the bill were Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper, Dion & the Belmonts
and Frankie Sardo. Before the show they chartered a plane for February
3rd. They were to play in Moorhead, Minnesota. On February 3rd '59
their plane took off soon after midnight and crashed a few minutes
later. Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper and pilot Roger
Peterson were killed instantly.
