Subject: Re: Henry Reed question
Thanks to Bill for getting the Henry Reed conversation going. My name is Chris
and I am in preproduction on a documentary about the life and music of Henry
Reed. I intend to examine where the music he played came from, how he came to
learn them, and how, so many years after his passing, his music is still valid
to so many. I plan to trace the spread of his music from the NC scene with
bands like the Hollow Rock String Band and others, to all corners of the world.
I'm looking for all things Henry Reed. Photographs of him. Recordings, other
than those of Alan Jabbours collection, that some people might have out there.
Also, I'm looking for musicians that are influenced by Henry Reed music, style,
or otherwise. Did you play with Henry once? Did you see him play? Did you get
a copy of a tape and learn his music? Have you never laid eyes on the man but
find his music viable? Where you at Narrows in 67 and! h! appened to snap a
couple pictures of Henry? I'd like to talk with you. Please contact me off
list if you have any info on Henry Reed or would like to participate in the
documentary as an interview subject or as a band/solo playing his music/style.
You can call or email me at the info below. Thank you so much for your time.
PS: I've already interviewed Dean and Gene Reed and intend to interview the
remaing two daughters of Henry after the new year as well as another son in
farther south western Virginia. The eldest son I'll hopefully get to talk to at
the Henry Reed Memorial Festival in June.

Henry Reed also called Barlow Knife (Cabin Creek). Said it was a Franklin
County piece. Some other ones he said were Eastern Virginia pieces, Ducks on the
pond, Cold Frosty Morning, Leather Britches, British field march and Santa Annas
retreat. His Soldiers Joy was pretty mean too.
