Ken Waldman CD & Book Release Party
Tue Aug 5
8 – 10pm
Your Inner Vagabond
42nd and Butler Street
Lawrenceville (Pittsburgh, PA)
New release from Ken Waldman, his seventh CD: 55 tunes, 5 poems.
Recorded over three years in Chicago and Fairbanks AK, the project documents Ken's considerable tune writing skills. The 55 original tunes (actually 60, since there are 5 "bonus" tunes) are mostly arranged with sparse, primal fiddle and banjo, occasionally with guitar and mandolin.
The Chicago session includes Jordan Wankoff, one of the mainstays of the old-time music community there, a multi-instrumentalist who has played on Waldman's three most recent recordings.
In Fairbanks, Ken imported Mark Tamsula from Pittsburgh to join him. A member of several notable Pittsburgh string bands, he has accompanied Waldman in his recent shows there, and proved an inspired addition to the project.
Ken Waldman's performances have been described as “haunting and melodic;…like being reminded of our very humanness and all the chances and changes still waiting to be discovered” (Cinthia Ritchie, Anchorage Daily News).
Considered Alaska’s Fiddling Poet, Waldman is a former college professor with more than 350 poems and stories published in national journals, he produces poems, stories and fiddle tunes that combine to make a performance uniquely his own.
At the release party, Ken will be accompanied by Mark Tamsula
Opening act: Emily Pinkerton.
