press release:

DEVILISH MERRY AND HOOLEY TO PLAY YOUR INNER VAGABOND, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER
21st.

Tinwhistle virtuoso L.E. McCullough returns to Pittsburgh to play with both
bands and give a seminar.

Devilish Merry (contemporary, Appalachian/Celtic influenced) joins forces
with Hooley, (traditional Irish) for an evening of unique music on the Your
Inner Vagabond stage at 8pm on Sunday, September 21st. Tinwhistle master
L.E. McCullough will join both bands. Your Inner Vagabond is located at 4130
Butler Street in Lawrenceville. (412-683-1623). Admission for the show is $7
at the door.

Devilish Merry is a Pittsburgh acoustic music institution. Founded in the
late 70ıs by current members Sue Powers (banjo), Jan Hamilton-Sota (fiddle)
and L.E. McCollough (tinwhistle, flute, harmonica), Devilish Merry began
its life as a traditional folk music band. After steady gigging into the mid
-80's, the members of Devilish Merry went their separate ways to explore
their artistic passions. The band reunited in 2005 to release the "Beauty is
Everywhere" CD and started new with a greater emphasis on fusing
contemporary and traditional forms. Sue Powers and Jan Hamilton-Sota are now
joined by new members Jeff Berman (lap dulcimer, percussion), Bob Powers
(lap steel), Kip Ruefle (bodhran, percussion) and Sam Matthews (bass) who
bring a wide range of new influences ranging from free improvisation to jazz
to punk rock to the band. Devilish Merry creates hypnotic genre-bending
music that fuses improvisation with traditional and contemporary forms. The
band has created a dynamic, layered, and driving brand of music that bridges
cultural roots and produces a totally unique sound. Currently in the studio,
look for a fall release of new Devilish Merry material that highlights their
one of a kind sound.

Hooley, who will open the show, are a collection of Pittsburghıs finest
traditional Irish musicians and dancers who perform at concert halls,
festivals, colleges and high schools, clubs and pubs, dances, receptions,
and weddings throughout western Pennsylvania and the Ohio. Formed in 1991,
Hooley consists of Oliver Browne (fiddle); Bruce Foley (guitar, uilleann
pipes, low whistle, tinwhistle, and vocals); Les Getchell (percussion);
Bruce Molyneaux (banjo, mandolin, cittern, and button accordion); Ray Werner
(concertina, vocals, and composition); and Richard Withers (flute,
tinwhistle, vocals, and composition).

L.E. McCullough has been performing and teaching traditional Irish music on
tinwhistle and flute since 1972. Author of Favorite Irish Session Tunes, The
Complete Irish Tinwhistle Tutor and Whistle Around the World, he has won
several music competitions in Ireland and America and recorded on 48 albums
for labels such as Angel, RCA, Sony Classical, Bluezette and Laserlight. In
1978 he earned a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh by authoring the
first-ever dissertation on Irish traditional music. Dr. McCullough has
composed music for commercials, stage, film and ballet and performed on the
score of the PBS television series The West, Lewis & Clark and the Warner
Brothers film Michael Collins.
