The gourd itself is NOT what is poisonous, it is the possibility that the molds that grow on the gourds after they are mature and are drying that MAY be toxic....

Scot, if I remember correctly, Quick- wood is poison - read the info on the package - I use Elmer's white school glue and mix it with some fine sawdust...
