To our folk music friends:
It's time to register for the Greenwood Furnace Folk Gathering! Come
join
us September 12-14 in central Pennsylvania for a fun and friendly
weekend
of playing and listening to folk music - a fantastic three days of
workshops, concerts, jams, dancing and friendship. Activities are
held at
Greenwood Furnace State Park in central PA, about 30 miles from State
College and 90 miles from Harrisburg. This is a gorgeous location with
beautiful mountain views, miles of hiking trails, and a six acre lake
for
swimming and fishing.
Simple Gifts organizes and coordinates the musical aspects of the
weekend
in addition to teaching. Other staff include Keystone Rebels (old
time and
Pennsylvania music on fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar & bass), Kitchen
Chair (contra and New England tunes on fiddle and guitar), Jerry
Trusty
(banjo and traditional songs), Clark Parry & Lucinda Durkee (singing &
beginner workshops), Druckenmiller Family Band (old time and West
Virginia
music on fiddle, banjo, mandolin, & guitar), Bob Nicholson (dance
caller),
Paul Fagley (Pennsylvania music), Jim Colbert (singer-songwriter),
Howard
Blumenthal (power jammer), Pete Hawley (mandolin, guitar, and
vocals), Liz
Friedel (eclectic fiddle), Rachel "Rachabelle" Bell & Tunescape
(Quebecois, Scandinavian & more), and Folkemer Family Band
(Pennsylvania
songs). We'll continue our focus on Pennsylvania musical history and
traditions by visiting and jamming with John and JoAnn Dively, two
musicians with deep roots in south-central Pennsylvania.
Musicians of all instruments and levels are welcome, and there are
also
options for singers, dancers, and non-musicians. There's a choice of
about
45 workshops on topics ranging from old time tunes to musical games to
harmony singing to arranging music. Jam sessions will take place
throughout the weekend. You'll have a chance to perform at open
stage and
also as part of a group performance Saturday evening. There will be a
staff concert each evening, followed by staff-led jams, singing
around the
bonfire, and a contradance with open band.
The cost for the weekend is $60 if postmarked by August 1 and $75
afterwards. The fee includes all workshops, jams, concerts, and
dancing. A
meal package with 3 meals Saturday and 2 meals Sunday is available for
$40.
Camping is available by calling the park 8am-4pm at 814/667-1800. Let
them
know you are part of the folk gathering, so that you may camp in the
area
by the workshop activities. There are also hotels about 15 miles
away.
