The Appleby College Chapel Choir
Appleby College has a long tradition of choral music dating back to the school’s beginnings in 1911, making the Chapel Choir one of the longest running activities at Appleby College. Amongst Appleby’s many activities the Chapel Choir is unique, as it brings together a large number of students from every grade. The Choir leads weekly chapel services as well as performing at a variety of special functions including the annual Carol Services, Confirmation and Memorial Services, and local performances at retirement homes in the Oakville area. In 2000, the Chapel Choir had the honour of singing for HRH Prince Andrew, the Duke of York. The Chapel Choir is run with the assistance of a Student Executive, whose members take various musical and administrative roles and are instrumental in the organization and leadership of the choir.
The Cantus Chamber Choir
The Cantus Chamber Choir was formed in the fall of 2001 in order to give dedicated singers at Appleby College the opportunity to perform at an advanced choral level. Now in their third season, Cantus enjoys a busy performance schedule at Appleby College and in the wider Oakville community. In March 2002, members of Cantus toured Italy and France, earning a silver award at the International Choral Competition and Festival in Riva Del Garda, Italy, while in May 2003 Cantus was invited to perform at the Suase! International Choral Festival in Cape Breton, N.S. where the group was recorded by CBC Radio Two. Other performance highlights have included silver awards at the Peel and Kiwanis Music Festivals as well as performing for Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu at the Mississauga Living Arts Centre. Cantus recently returned from a successful performance tour of the Cayman Islands in February 2004. The group’s next performance is a feature lobby concert at Roy Thomson Hall as part of the Canadian Independent Schools Music Festival on May 2, 2004. The impressive achievements of the Cantus Choir can be attributed to the students’ professionalism and passion for choral music.
