Dear Panflute friends and Rumanian Folk Music lovers,
Today proudly I can annonce UNESCO's decision :
Rumanian DOINA is Inscribed in 2009 on the
Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity !
The Doina is a lyrical, solemn chant that is improvised and spontaneous. As the
essence of Romanian folklore, until 1900 it was the only musical genre in many
regions of the country. Technically, the doina can be sung in any context
(outdoors, at home, at work or during wakes), and is always performed solo, with
or without instrumental accompaniment (which might include the traditional
straight flute, bagpipes and even improvised instruments). There are several
regional variants. The doina has a wide-ranging expressive and thematic palette
that spans joy, sadness, solitude, social conflicts, brigand attacks, love and
so on. Expressing as it does the personal qualities, emotions and virtuosity of
the creator-performer, the doina also plays an important social role by
providing a cathartic outlet that strengthens solidarity. It has also given rise
to other artistic genres (dances). Today, the doina is under threat locally
because of a break in the line of transmission from parent to child. Although
some fifteen people have been identified as representatives of the various types
of doina, an environment conducive to performance and transmission must be
restored in order to ensure that this important feature of Romania's intangible
cultural heritage continues to flourish.
Decision 4.COM 13.69
The Committee (…) decides that [this element] satisfies the criteria for
inscription on the Representative List, as follows:
R1: The Doina has been transmitted, mainly inside families, in many parts of
Romania, where people regard it as part of their cultural heritage and their
identity;
R2: Inscription of the element on the Representative List would bear witness to
human creativity and would contribute to enhancing the visibility of intangible
cultural heritage;
R3: Current, recent and intended efforts to ensure the viability of the element
are described and it is demonstrated that the concerned parties have the will
and commitment to safeguard the element through the measures identified;
R4: The support of the State for the nomination is complemented by the consent
of the communities and practitioners;
R5: The element is included on the national inventory by the National Commission
for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

A wonderfull weekend in Winkel
From 10 till 12 October the International Swiss Panflute Seminar was
held in Winkel near Zürich for the 8th time. For me it was the 5th
time that I was there. Since Landgasthof "Breitti" were the course was
held was fully booked, I stayed in Gasthof "Hecht". Most of the
students come back. So, after the first time, you will be meeting
friends again. As usual, it was organized by Michael Dinner and Dan
Herford.
Maybe you know that they always invite a guest teacher. In other years
they had invited for example Damian Luca, Cornel Pana and Radu Simion.
This time it was Vasile Iovu from Moldavia. He had been there once
before and the whole group was clearly glad to see him again!
Normally, the weekend starts Friday afternoon with Michael's welcoming
speech and everybody taking his turn to play a piece. This last thing
is to make it easier for the teachers to define who is going to be in
which group. However, this time it was possible to book a private
class for the Friday morning. I had a private class with Dan. I can
recommend it. It is a good way of getting to know what are your
weaknesses!
As far as the playing in the afternoon is concerned, you will
definitely not be the only one who is nervous! I always am, even
though I know that I have no real reason to be. I mean I am not a good
player, but they are not likely to send anybody home! Even if you make
a mess of it! Like I did.
When everybody has played, it is time for eating together and after
that: more music. You know, some students cannot resist the temptation
to play and the teachers certainly can't. The others love to listen.
On Saturday morning we all came together. All the students heard in
which group they had been placed.
My group started with Michael. We did lot of warming up. Michael, I
will do my best to keep my flute straight! After the exercises we
started practicing some of the easier pieces for the final concert.
After lunch we had a third hour with Michael and 3 hours with Dan.
Dan and Michael are quite different characters, but both good and
patient teachers.
With Dan you must be prepared for hard work, but you are likely to
learn a lot.
Dan, I will do my best not to take air at places where I shouldn't!
But bad habits are often difficult to get rid of.
This time apart from Dan, Vasile Iovu and me several other persons
stayed either in Breitti or in Hecht. And more stayed for the evening
meal and the festival after!
On Sunday Vasile Iovu had my group. His classes are special too. Did
you know that he has written a book "Metoda de nai"? It is in Romanian
but it contains a lot of exercises and many melodies. You can use it
even if you do not speak Romanian. Apart from our Romanian teachers
Ciril is the only one in the course who has learned Romanian.
When speaking about the final concert Maestro Iovu told us not to
worry. He said you can compare this with a philharmonic orchestra.
There there are allways a lot of violinists. So a player who gets lost
can stop playing and the audience won't hear it. The weaker players
can hide behind the stronger ones. I allways get lost somewhere. In
his classes we were also glad to have our interpreter Virginia Gaus!
She is a Romanian painter and professional interpreter who lives in
Switzerland. You could see that she loved to do this. And she learned
a lot too!
By the way, Vasile Iovu does have a certain knowledge of French, but
he is a bit out of practice. No doubt that language is not used much
in Moldavia.
In the afternoon came together to practice for the concert. Usually
all the tunes in the course-book are played, but don't worry. You only
have to play where you feel at ease! And, as said, you can hide behind
the better players. The students play during the first part of the
concert assisted by the teachers and by Kiyomi Higaki on the piano. We
ended with "La vie en rose".
The second part of the concert is for the teachers who play solo's.
For example: Vasile Iovu plays his favorite doina. Dan another
Romanian piece. Michael and Kiyomi classical music.
It ended with us all playing "La vie en rose" again.
Of course the audience consists for a large part of family and friends
of the participants. Virginia invited a colleague of her who clearly
liked it too!
After dinner it was a really jolly party again!
Thank you very much Michael, Dan, Maestro Iovu, Virginia, Kiyomi and
of course all my co-students. See you in the next year!
Famke
P.S. if you like to see the pictures you can go to the site of Michael
Dinner. He has added picturee to the German translation.
Thanks for your email, Ricardo.
I can write exclusively for you that sheet music.
My original transcriptions are not free,
the minimum price is $15 or 10¤ (no shipment expenses),
because they are exclusive, not downloaded from anywhere
but written very carefully by me taking all the time to write
by hand something beautiful and accurate to the original.
My sheet music is not just a thing to print in a paper.
I give you the scores beautifully edited plus the Noteworthy file,
the notation software I've worked with, where you can listen
the sheet music played by your computer and the midi file.
This is an invaluable help to know how exactly sounds before playing
and rehearse and work each part stopping the music.
I transcribe them exactly like you need it, for the instrument you need,
in the key tone you want, for your technical level.
Please send your mp3, specify how you want it and I'll give you an
estimate.
I transcribe also youtubes.
With every paid order I'll give you for free many other
titles from my transcriptions list, make your choice:
http://www.angelfire.com/music/crescalona/my_transcriptions_list.html
All of them with their Noteworthy and midi files.
I'm sure you'll love my sheet music.
Best wishes,

Hi Walt, or is it Jordan that I am replying to.
Excuse my ignorance but I have not sussed out how to use this page yet.
First qustion is how do I open the music you have posted? I am trying to learn
to play the
clarinet and would love to have a go at them...no matter how bad I can make them
sound.
As a aside I took an English amulance to a Town called Comanesti in northeast
Romania
last year just before Christmas. The mayor was overjoyed to get it as it doubled
his civic
fleet. The other vehicle is a fire engine 40 years old given by English firemen
about 5
years ago.
I have been to Romania almost every year since 1989 and just love the lovely
Buchereati!
While driving the old ambulance across Europe (what an adventure it was) we
stopped of
in Shigishwara (excuse the poor spelling) home to Mr Vlad the Impailer (or Mr
Dracular)
himself. It was a fantastic experience to arrive in the empty medievil ancient
town, at
night 1 week before Christmas, when there were NO tourists!!! We managed to have
our
last drink odf the evening in Mr Vlads very house. The bartender would only sell
us a
Swieeka (excuse speeling!!) and we were the only customers in town. What a
place. Qite
unforgetable.
We (my partner, Ioana) and I also run a Balkan music club in West London once a
month.
It is starting to have quite a good following If you or an other musicians are
in town do
get in contact beforehand and come down for the evening of bands dance and
drink. We
would love to meet others of like mind.
Looking forward to any reply

Hi Jodan,
I'm based in Cleveland, Ohio in the USA. I lead a band called
Harmonia. In concert, the group has violin (sometimes two violins),
cimbalom, bass, accordion, flutes (panflute, tilinca, sopilka,
dvodencivka) and vocals. The bass player also plays fujara. We
sometimes have a taragot player with us, as well. I'll post a photo
of us a some time soon. The formation changes somewhat when we play
weddings, depending on the group we are playing for (mostly for
Hungarian, Romanian, Ukrainian, Slovak, Rusyn, or Jewish.
Have a great time in Bucuresti! I'm sure you are listening to some
super lautarii right now.

Dear Pascal
thank you very much for your reaction.
Yes indeed it was a lot of fun and the "Après Ski" after Concert was
very "gezellig" .
We order for all the participants chinees food and red wine ,so the Party
was
succesful and of course the day also succesful!
The most important of all it was the Enthousiastical feeling of the
participants.
The reaction after this Event is very positive:
"Dan,when is the next Romanian Music Day "?

Cred ca este cel mai bun lucru;personal ma abtin de la orice comentar.
Totusi ,nu ca-i iau partea lui Mitica ( asa-l numesc eu),dar am impresia
ca a uitat de acel lucru.....
