The Red Masque (http://www.theredmasque.com)
Floorian (http://www.floorian.com)
The Great Quentini

Powerlunch: Baltimore based instrumental "power trio" (i.e. the classic late
20th century
configuration of guitar, bass, and drums), that specializes in the
juxtaposition,
combination, permutation, and complete obliteration of the dichotomy between
intricately
composed material and various improvisational strategies, as well as
small-minded,
arcane, and obsolete musical concepts such as 'stylistic purity'. What does this
mean?
Almost all of the music will never sound the same twice, even though each
composition
still retains it's own individual stamp, form, and direction. One could call
this a process of
'living in the moment', and/or 'learning to deal with memory deprivation'.
Emphasis is placed on organic real-time structural/timbral development, which is
achieved
through the various uses of live electronics, in combination with a personal
vocabulary of
various 'extended instrumental techiniques.' As a result, the overall sonic
spectrum is
quite large and extremely unpredictable, especially for a basic 'rock & roll'
trio. Imagine, if
you will, a couple of disenchanted 'jazz' and 'classical' musicians pretending
to be
'electronic hardcore punk rock' musicians, who are then, once again, posing as
jazz
musicians...

Powerlunch generally consists of: Matt Frazao:: guitar/electronics, Devin Gray::
drums,
Evan Lipson:: bass. However, for this performance, they will be adding both
members from
the duo Exploding Fist: Andrew Gaspar:: turntables, Joe Lentini:: mixing board

The Red Masque: original avant rock band from the Philadelphia area. Part art,
part
alchemy, the group's experimental songwriting style is both angular and eerie,
accented
by freeform space rock improvisations, intricate acoustics, dark atmospherics
and chunky
riffs. Unconventional and eccentric in musical form, the band fuses together
such
disparate musical references as horror movie soundtracks, rock-in-opposition,
zeuhl,
heavy rock, gothic, psychedelia and kraut rock. Founded in February 2001 by
bassist/
keyboardist Brandon Ross and vocalist Lynnette Shelley, the Red Masque went
through
several lineup changes before solidifying with drummer/multi-instrumentalist
Brian
("Vonorn") Van Korn and guitarist Kiarash Emami. With this lineup, The Red
Masque
produced a single (Beggars & Thieves) and the sophisticatedly sinister
full-length album
(Feathers for Flesh) in 2003 and 2004 respectively.

For this event, The Red Masque will perform with THE COLOR OF POMEGRANATES as a
visual backdrop. THE COLOR OF POMEGRANATES, directed by Sergei Paradjanov, is
the
acclaimed poetic masterpiece that wasbanned by Soviet censors who feared it was
a
nationalist parable. The story depicts the life and spiritual odyssey of the
medieval
Armenian poet and troubadour Sayat Nova, and his rise from carpet weaver to
archbishop
and martyr.

The Red Masque is: Kiarash Emami :: electric and acoustic guitars, mandolin,
keyboards,
pennywhistle; Brandon Ross :: bass guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboards; Lynnette
Shelley ::
vocals, lyrics, noises & percussion, webmistress; Brian (Vonorn) Van Korn ::
drums &
percussion, flutes, celtic harp, keyboards, theremin

Floorian: a seductively spellbinding band from O-high-o. Their debut album "what
the
buzzing" was released in September on The Committee To Keep Music Evil, the
label
headed by Anton Newcombe of the Brian Jonestown Massacre (and part of the Bomp!
stable of labels owned by legendary underground rock guru Greg Shaw). Exploring
the
realms of psychedelia, space rock and experimentalism, Floorian has conjured its
own
unique style of darkly melodic, hypnotic drone rock. While not easy to describe,
these
excursions are very easy to space out to, filled with mind-stretching sounds and
textures... yet they also spend a considerable amount of time rocking out. The
critics rave
-- Matt Shimmer said: "While some songs are predominately atmospheric and
soundscapey, the focus rests on a strong rock and pop influence that Floorian
pulls off
wonderfully. "Symptoms Alone" is a nine-minute epic of intergalactic folk-rock,
like what
you'd get if you shot Yo La Tengo even further into the depths

of space. "Auravine," meanwhile, focuses more on drones, making great use of a
wavering
bassline, a sparse beat, and some echoing, atmospheric sounds in the background.
Filled
with amazing solos, galactic atmospheres, and catchy, all-enveloping bouts of
rock, this is
one of the best psychedelic records of the year."

Floorian consists of: Todd Fisher, John Godshalk, Larry Durica, Alex Lee Mason,
and Bill
Spiropoulos

Hi all
Just a reminder about this upcoming concert featuring The Red
Masque (among others). This will be a UNIQUE The Red
Masque performance as the band will be performing as a live
soundtrack to an award-winning art film. The music the band
performs for this film will not be repeated at future TRM concerts.

THE COLOR OF POMEGRANATES, directed by Sergei
Paradjanov, is the acclaimed poetic masterpiece that was
banned by Soviet censors who feared it was a nationalist
parable. The story depicts the life and spiritual odyssey of the
medieval Armenian poet and troubadour Sayat Nova, and his
rise from carpet weaver to archbishop and martyr.

The Red Masque will be playing a unique, improvised
composition based upon the film's visuals, with lyrics taken from
the English translation of the original Russian dialogue. This will
be a unique performance from the band, and not to be missed.

FULL EVENT DETAILS BELOW.....

Way to go Gina, Howdy all.

Got my yahoo mail address re-activated and am catching up.

I don't have a haiku either but how about a haiku related mp3 by John
Cage instead:

Dic, the monthly PAC(man)top downloads list you were referring to is
now listed in the link section. You can access the PAC webcast from
there too.

Power on,

Wow, it is really great to see Pete Losofa's Drug Music Webcast-Playlist & the familiar faces here in my inbox again.

It is wonderful to see our PACMAN community coming back & forming into another spacey & juicy incarnation for our A/V interactions.

I would write a haiku, but that is not my specialty...Gina's haiku's rock tho.

But here's some JCP news & updates and an outreach to other local, Philly artists, musicians too.

This is not ambient or noise related, but its good  news: I recently did some tracks for a new & up n coming R&B singer based in Philly named "Remy", that was produced by the legendary LA - producer, Mykal Kamal..imagine my work soundin like marvin gaye era - slow jam - wah-wah-guitar, delivered in a laid back and neo-jazz-neo-soul like vibe...tasty and very different - pop - oriented stuff. and looks like theres more to come with some 1000% bonafide R&B legends (who ever knew bein a R&B session man was gonna be a for me..I sure didnt, but it sure is working out well doing session wk and it sure does pay for the more experimental & avant G. or dark ambient-free-jazz-stuff I still mainly drop these days ).

Let's see...what else..Oh yeah...Still Mixing down my next solo Release "Life Like That".

Also, some folks may have noticed that from time to time I appear w/Scattered Planets with me trusty dusty black squire telecaster.

The next appearance I make with Scattered Planets will be Nov. 5th @ the Millcreek in W. Philly, so be there folks.

Also, work with the mega-loud & intentionally, "nothing-new in particular", noise-space-rock Power Trio: The Electric Blanket, is out now  & released online, for free of course:
http://zed.cbc.ca/go.ZeD?user_id=41836&page=content

EB is also very interested in touring and booking dates with like
minded noise-bands/AEN type acts, etc., all across america or even
anywhere else in the world that will have us play for them.

EB played its 1st ever debut gig @ the Northstar back in September w/ Psydee Delicious and it was a total blast of mega doses of volume and ended up being a completely sweat inducing success.

I am since the September 2004 issue, now writing a music column - reviews/features for PASSIONAL Magazine.

This month, I focus on Lightning Bolt, Philly's Amos Lee & The UK's, Dizzy Razcal.

My work with PASSIONAL will seek to try & highlight national/international and local music that is both bizarre, sexy and also on edge from virtually any genre; But local acts seeking reviews-write-ups-please send your demos or CD's to PASSIONAL www.passional.com (& yes, I admit I have always wanted to be AD Amorosi...God he is gorgeous in physical form and obviously gifted with the pen..I will settle for being gifted with my pen - LOL )

& oh yeah...I am also still doing street music too either on 2nd. street, just before you get to the khyber in Old City, but I am there only on weekends when I dont have any other gigs or I am opposite zanzibar blue on the avenue of the arts, during the week when I have the energy to get out there  weather permitting of course.

Last, I am presently organizing a Philadelphia Noise-Fest for early 2005 & would love to get as many local participants Philly or Delaware Valley Persons who are willing and interested in joining on all the fun.

Re: Philly Noisefest, I am looking for everything: meaning-from soft soothing droning-noise to harsh, pedal driven AEN types of stuff, to laptop or Sequencer/Laptop-CD-Player-Driven Madness & even tons of ear piercing feedbk...litterally I am after all styles of noise & I welcome and deeply encouraged anyone who classifies themselves as noise-laden, to get in touch with me off-list.

Upcoming releases in early 2005:

Live Material from AKASH: The Cabaret of Candor
A New-Age Piano-Synth-Acoustic Guitar Solo Release by JCP
A Full CD from Electric Blanket
A Full CD from The John Price Trio-Straight Ahead and Latin Jazz.
New Music from The Crime: 80's DUB, Afro-Pop & Pop-Rock
Collaborations between JCP & Ed WIlcox of Temple of Bon Matin

Hope to seeyall sometime soon.

I'll e-mail the scheduling people - the 8 to 9 am slot is taken, but 7 to
8am is still good. Hopefully you'll be getting more detailed marathon info
from someone named Jenn Louie, or myself, rather soon. The pledge sheet is
attached in PDF format.

If you want to come see the studio, you're welcome to. This weekend I'll be
a bit busy, but after the weekend you can come see it any time that I'm free
to show you around. Basically what I'm curious to know is what your set-up
is, and what kind of basic output your set-up will need. For example, if you
have three instruments which you plug into a small mixing board of your own,
perhaps all you'll need from us then is a pair of RCA inputs. Something like
that - just write me back if you like and let me know what your audio needs
might be. Better to be prepared!

Cheers,

- Scott K. WKDU

Hi Scott,

I'd like to take the Friday morning slot - 8 to 9 am.
If it's been taken I could do the time before that,
from 7 to 8. Please send me a pledge sheet via PDF.

Is there any way I could stop by this weekend and
check out the studio to see what I'll be working with?

Looking forward to this,
Dave

Hey David -

Glad that you'd like to come play this year... seeing as how you want to do
a live set-up and not just records, I think that'd definitely bring some
good variety to the marathon... we have a live band studio which should
hopefully accomodate you. Just so you know, this year's marathon is to
benefit the Village of Arts and Humanities (they have a website at
www.villagearts.org), and everyone who comes to play needs to raise at least
$30, be it from family, friends, neighbors or out of their own pocket. If
you want a PDF pledge sheet, let me know and I can send you one. Without
further ado, then - here are the eight remaining hours, as far as I am
aware.... if you want to go for it, just get back to me with your
preference. Note that I'm e-mailing three other philly_ambient people about
these slots at the same time as you... so get back to me ASAP!

Cheers,

- Scott, WKDU

Electroambient Space founding scribe Phil Derby's
review of GOS#1 "...To Reach the other Shore"

Ben Fleury-Steiner ".To Reach the other Shore"

www.gearsofsand.net

8 tracks, 48.00 mins

Fans of understated abstract experimental pieces from
labels such as Hypnos and The Foundry, would do well
to consider investing in releases on the fascinating
Gears Of Sand label. Even the packaging is unique,
completely clear jewel cases with no conventional
booklet; just a jewel embedded in the upper left
corner near the spine, and a half-sheet of clear
plastic for the front cover art and title. Other
credits are etched directly on the back of the jewel
case. Ingenious packaging, ingenious music. This
particular disc is quiet and subtle. The sound palette
is rich and adventurous despite the minimal nature of
it. The 10-minute opener "Red Moon Shoes" seems a dead
ringer for Geir Jenssen's work as Biosphere, as
ambient drones are fused with soft pulses and
occasional odd mechanical sounds. "Glocio" is also
quiet and relatively formless, although distant bells
do appear. Regular beats and melodies are not to be
found, and some pieces are so subtle as to be nearly
silent at times, as on ".To Whisper 1,000 Shimmering
Births," although babies can be heard crying in the
distant background. Each track seems to go nowhere and
yet everywhere, and each is different than the next,
such as the fascinating "Tzippor," which sounds a bit
like crickets and someone trampling leaves, but the
sound is too regular, too mechanized to be that
exactly. Moody with lots of intrigue, .To Reach the
other Shore is a great time.

Yay!!!

Please note that Gate to Moonbase Alpha will occur every 3rd Friday, October
through
April.

Friday, October 15, 8pm-12am
Gate to Moonbase Alpha (GTMBA)
Free admission for all ages.
At The Rotunda: 4014 Walnut St., Phila. http://www.foundationarts.org,
215-573-3234.

Featured acts:

Powerlunch (http://powerlunchsite.tripod.com)
  The Red Masque (http://www.theredmasque.com)
  Floorian (http://www.floorian.com)
  The Great Quentini

Powerlunch:  Baltimore based instrumental "power trio" (i.e. the classic
late 20th century
configuration of guitar, bass, and drums), that specializes in the
juxtaposition,
combination, permutation, and complete obliteration of the dichotomy between
intricately
composed material and various improvisational strategies, as well
as small-minded,
arcane, and obsolete musical concepts such as 'stylistic purity'.  What does
this
mean?  Almost all of the music will never sound the same twice, even
though each composition still retains it's own individual stamp, form, and
direction.  One
could call this a process of 'living in the moment', and/or 'learning to deal
with memory
deprivation'.
Emphasis is placed on organic real-time structural/timbral development, which is
achieved
through the various uses of live electronics, in combination with a
personal vocabulary of
various 'extended instrumental techiniques.'  As a result, the overall sonic
spectrum is
quite large and extremely unpredictable, especially for a basic 'rock &
roll' trio.  Imagine, if
you will, a couple of disenchanted 'jazz' and 'classical' musicians pretending
to be
'electronic hardcore punk rock' musicians, who are then, once again, posing as
jazz
musicians...

Shelley ::
vocals, lyrics, noises & percussion, webmistress; Brian (Vonorn) Van Korn ::
drums &
percussion, flutes, celtic harp, keyboards, theremin

"Symptoms Alone" is a nine-minute epic of intergalactic folk-rock,
like what
you'd get if you shot Yo La Tengo even further into the depths of space.
"Auravine,"
meanwhile, focuses more on drones, making great use of a wavering bassline, a
sparse
beat, and some echoing, atmospheric sounds in the background. Filled with
amazing
solos, galactic atmospheres, and catchy, all-enveloping bouts of rock, this is
one of the
best psychedelic records of the year."

Floorian consists of: Todd Fisher, John Godshalk, Larry Durica, Alex Lee Mason,
and Bill
Spiropoulos

The Great Quentini is one man. or one entity. He takes discarded and forgotten
talking
Barbie dolls, Halloween novelties, turkey basters, pots and pans, and so much
more, and
magically sculpts music from thin air. Born in an obscure corner of
Pennsylvania. Abducted
by space aliens for cross cloning with Yeti. Twelve year residency at Dr Zorg's
secret
underground space station. Five year unexplained gap. Thirteen years in
Philadelphia
recovering from wounds received while fighting Gondar. In the words of an
8-year-old
critic: "Don't be afraid Mom, he's just a Sacred Clown."

As one of the oldest series at The Rotunda, GTMBA showcases the newest in music
and
more. Featured is live music (of local, national, and international artists)
from such genres
as ambient, space, experimental electronic, free improv, found sounds, field
recordings,
IDM, tech-ambient, noise, post-rock, psychedelic, dark ambient, neo classical,
and hard-
to-define sounds and new music styles.

In addition to music, video art, oil projections, slides, 16mm films,
performance art,
interactive presentations (such as those from MIDI jumpsuits or audience
participation),
visual art, and more can be found at a single GTMBA event.

GTMBA serves as one of the most cherished monthly events of its kind, not only
for the
talent that it showcases, but also for the community it fosters, as musicians
delving into
new music can interact with and learn from each other.

PERFORMERS AT SUBSEQUENT GTMBA EVENTS
Friday, Nov. 19: Convert to 8Bit, Mad EP, Scrap.edx
Friday, Dec. 17: ORTHO, Make a Rising, the Cut Up/Groove-->!, The Great Quentini
Friday, Jan. 21: Goodnight Stars Goodnight Air, more tba

Free admission for all ages.
At The Rotunda: 4014 Walnut St., Phila. http://www.foundationarts.org,

Many times I tried to post this message to the simpletone list, but couldn't
get it through. Anyway, it's rather late in the game, but we're still trying
to fill up a couple hour-long blocks for the 2004 WKDU Electronic Music

I have been wondering where all my fellow musicological brethren were at and even more important, where they are playing.  And I miss Pete's Drugmusic notification, even though there was some flaming about whether or not it belonged on this list.  I can always go to his website, but it was nice to get regular reminders.  More importantly, I liked getting the monthly top downloads or whatever the feature was called.

Anyway, glad we are re-connected...
