The ProgAndOther list began in September 1998 as a spinoff from a mailing list dedicated to the band Kansas. Off topic discussion was discouraged there, so the ProgAndOther list was created for those list members who wanted to discuss other progressive rock bands. It soon took on a life of its own and expanded to become a general-purpose, friendly place to discuss prog rock and related subjects. Many new people have joined PaO, and the areas of discussion now cover everything from neo to RIO. The topic of this list is similar to that of the newsgroup rec.music.progressive, but because email lists tend to be friendlier than newsgroups, many PaO subscribers feel more comfortable discussing their favorite bands here. Of course, r.m.p participants are welcome to join PaO, and vice versa.

Almost anything goes on PaO, but try to keep things friendly - flame wars will not be tolerated. Avoid inflammatory posts, particularly on the subjects of politics and religion. Rational posts analyzing the political or religious content of a progressive rock band's music or lyrics are tolerated, but flaming posts that do nothing but stir up a political or religious debate are not. If the moderator asks for a thread to be dropped, please comply. Any posters who continually ignore this request may be put on moderated status or, as a last resort, banned from the list at the discretion of the moderator. Aside from that, the list is basically unmoderated.
