As keyboardist (and one of the main songwriters) of the English progressive
rock band Threshold, Richard West never has a shortage of ideas for songs.
However, not all of those ideas are really Threshold material. Where, then,
to showcase them? Enter Richard's wife, Farrah. For many years, those close
to Richard knew that he and Farrah always wanted to work on a project
together. Originally released under Farrah's own name, those early demos
were the impetus of what is now League Of Lights. A self described "modern
melodic rock group with 80's pop sensibilities," the band is a great place
to showcase the debut of Farrah's vocals, which is really the focal point of
the band. Farrah doesn't scream or wail; her vocals fit the atmosphere of
each song perfectly. One song in particular which showcases not only Farrah
but the project itself is the opener, I'm Alive. Richard notes that this
track really brought the project together, stating "...I recorded the
instrumental demo for that one back in 2008 and we took it to the US on
holiday with the hope of starting the lyrics. I remember thinking that the
next time we go back to the US we'd be listening to the finished album,
although that seemed a long way off at the time." Those who are expecting
the more progressive metal aspect of Threshold are likely to not find what
they're looking for. The songs here are subtle, not overblown. The musical
song structure (written primarily by Rich) really compliment Farrah's vocal
stylings. Joining Richard on keys is drummer Mark Zonder (Fates Warning),
Ruud Jolie (Within Temptation) on guitars and bassist Jerry Meehan (Brian
Ferry). This isn't a throw-away project, as Richard has noted. "I don't see
this as a one-off album, I very much hope to do it again. Although it took a
long time to put together it was wonderful to do." Please join us on Tuesday
night (June 7th) at 8pm as we spotlight the brand new, debut release by
League Of Lights.

For those of you who might be interested, this documentary featuring progressive music, musicians and other people involved, is being aired on several PBS TV stations around the country.  Tonight at 10pm in Seattle, WA on KWSU.  For other areas/dates go to www.progdocs.com  and you can get more info there (as well as trailers, reviews, etc).

The film was shortened a bit for PBS and is about an hour for TV, the DVD is about 95 min. and has more concert footage in it.

If you don't see it listed for your area, feel free to call your local PBS station and request it.   Some stations (like this one in Seattle) had expressed interest but had not gotten back to us to let us know that they gave it an air date!  A few others said that they weren't sure they would give it because they didn't know if it would 'fit' their audience....let them know that progressive music IS appreciated.  : )

Although it will be the day after, The Prog-Rock Diner has decided to do a somewhat themed show based on Father's Day. The first tune doesn't have father or man in the title, but it was sent to me by a new father, Kavus Torabi, and his band Knifeworld. Other songs have Man or Father in them and I've also gotten requests from my husband Paul Sears who certainly IS a father!

So we'll hear from: Knifeworld, Van Der Graaf Generator, Rascal Reporters, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Queen, Shadow Circus, The Muffins, Chainsaw Jazz, Magma, Jannick Top, Man and The Rolling Stones.

Please join me on Monday 6/20/11 from 5-7pm EST at

The Rebel Wheel Rolls Into ProgDay with Special Guest Guy LeBlanc!

From Ottawa, Canada, THE REBEL WHEEL began in the early 1990s out of a shifting
cooperative of musicians working in a myriad of styles producing both improvised
and arranged music. Early work tended towards neo-prog, but over the years the
band pursued a more aggressive and edgy direction that eventually evolved into
the sound they have today. Steeped in dark, cinematic soundscapes and complex
turn-on-a-dime arrangements, sometimes dissonant, sometimes mellow, always
eclectic, their musical landscape has been compared to WETTON-era KING CRIMSON,
ZAPPA, RUSH, PINK FLOYD, and at times even YES and GENESIS. But in the end
their personality is all their own.

Recently working and gigging as a three-piece while ANGIE MACIVOR is on hiatus
with the birth of her first child, THE REBEL WHEEL have expanded their lineup
for ProgDay to include guest keyboardist-extraordinare GUY LeBLANC, acclaimed
for his work with NATHAN MAHL and CAMEL. We're sure this special show will be a
treat for fans of both THE REBEL WHEEL and Guy LeBlanc.

THE REBEL WHEEL joins UŽ JSME DOMA (Czech Republic), PANZERBALLETT (Germany),
QUANTUM FANTAY (Belgium) and FIBONACCI SEQUENCE (US) at this year's ProgDay, the
longest running progressive rock festival in the world. ProgDay's 17th edition
will take place on Saturday, September 3, and Sunday, September 4 at Storybook
Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. For more information, and to hear music

MÖRGLBL Tears It Up At ProgDay 2011!

Consisting of guitar master CHRISTOPHE GODIN, bassist IVAN ROUGNY and drummer
JEAN-PIERRE FRELÉZEAU, THE MÖRGLBL TRIO released their first album in 1998. "The
Mörglbl Trio !!" offered a guitar-driven instrumental combination of jazz and
metal served up with dollops of humor that was well received by critics and
fans. The heavier "Bienvenue á Mörglbl Land" was released in 1999 to even
greater acclaim. The momentum of other projects led to the end of THE MÖRGLBL
TRIO in 2000, but everyone stayed in touch.

In 2005, while working together on "Christophe Godin's Metal Kartoon," the
members found renewed interest in their old band. They reformed as MÖRGLBL and
released their third album, "Grötesk," in 2007.

French music scene veteran AURÉLIEN OUZOULIAS took over the drum chair in late
2007, and the band went on to deliver a striking set at NEARfest in 2008. Since
then they have released "Jäzz For The Deaf," and have become renowned for their
take on high-energy, prog/metal/fusion. As anyone at NEARfest X that Sunday
morning can tell you, MÖRGLBL at ProgDay will be a performance you won't want to
miss!

MÖRGLBL (France) joins THE REBEL WHEEL (Canada), UŽ JSME DOMA (Czech Republic),
PANZERBALLETT (Germany), QUANTUM FANTAY (Belgium) and FIBONACCI SEQUENCE (US) at
this year's ProgDay, the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.
ProgDay's 17th edition will take place on Saturday, September 3, and Sunday,
September 4 at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. For more

There was also a great performance at Local 506 that ProgDay
regulars may remember...(the ProgDay '07 preshow).

Great band, looking forward to seeing them again. Just bought
my ticket yesterday and the hotel reservation is all lined up,
can't wait for Labor Day weekend to get here. My wife's even
hinting around that she might come along this year.

can't wait for Labor Day weekend to get here. My wife's even
hinting around that she might come along this year.

How do you judge a landmark album? Do you judge it based on the impact of
the album on not only its peers but on future generations? Do you judge it
based on the impact of it at the time of release?  One thing is for certain;
Metallica's Master Of Puppets is indeed a landmark release based on anyone's
criteria. In fact, this album is ranked by many as the greatest heavy metal
album in the last 30 years, if not of all time. What makes these eight songs
so powerful? One may state it's based on the lyrics, which deal with the
fear of powerlessness - whether it's by drugs, authority, or even insanity.
Some might chime in, stating that while musically this album builds on the
backs of the band's 1984 release, Ride The Lightning, the actual playing on
"Master" is taken up a notch. Still others may point to the catchiness of
the material while still being obscure enough to garner virtually no radio
airplay yet "Master" was the breakthrough the band needed into the
mainstream (an irony in and of itself). What cannot be discounted, however,
is the impact of the album on the band and the heavy metal genre. The band
(Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and Cliff Burton) and producer
Flemming Rassmussen made an album so perfect for its' time that the bar was
set to a point where even they didn't know if they could top it. These 55
minutes are, as Pop Matters puts it, "...progressive metal of the epic
variety." The glue that really brought "Master" together was bassist Cliff
Burton; Lars has stated on multiple occasions that Cliff had an
understanding of the more technical matters of songwriting (time signatures
and syncopation, for example) that the other three did not. In addition,
Cliff had taken formal lessons on music theory while in college (albeit
briefly) and his growing expertise in these matters helped the material
tremendously; from the breakdown in the title track to the eight minute
instrumental "Orion." Sadly, Cliff passed away on September 27, 1986, while
the band toured in support of the album. All of these factors have led to
this album reaching almost godlike status; from the flamenco beginning of
"Battery" to the epic flurry of "Damage Inc.", these 8 songs have stood the
test of time in the progressive and heavy metal communicates. Please join us
on Tuesday night (June 28st) at 8pm as we spotlight the 1986 release by
Metallica, entitled Master Of Puppets.

The Prog-Rock Diner on Radio Fairfax is going to heat things up a bit for the first part of the 'menu', then we'll cool it down to get some relief from the summer heat. So the spicy portion of show will consist of some Jack Dupon and the Matts Morgan Band. We'll start to cool down with Picchio Dal Pozzo, then really chill with Karfagen, Camel, Renaissance, Steve Hackett, Saint Just, White Willow, Zello and last but not least Curved Air.

Please join me from 5-7pm EST at
www.fcac.org/radio-fairfax We're also on Cable and FIOS in Northern Virginia and you can get us on your Smart Phone as well. See you there!
