I have been on a Beatles kick recently myself. About a month ago I realized
that I did not have any Beatles cd's in my collection so lately I have found
used:

Abby Road (still my all time favorite Beatles disc)
Let It Be
Magical Mystery Tour
Sgt. Pepper
White Album

I also picked up the 1999 re-master of Yellow Submarine. The remastering job
is fantastic. It is very clear, and clean sounding great.

An excellent album where the Moog and ARP synths were explored to their
utmost - by Stevie Wonder. I still prefer _Innervisions_ though.

Yeah, I probably shouldn't have used the term "neoprog" - after all, most
VDGG albums came out early in the "classic prog" era, so they can't really
be neoprog. I was just noting the melodrama/slightly simplified symphonic
prog similarities.

Seems there's a lot of "prog-snobs" who are really into VDGG, which is
why I'm really surprised that they do nothing for me. The band seems to
be a cult of personality around Hammill - you've got to like his really
dramatic (melodramatic) vocal delivery style. I don't care for it, and
there are only a few instrumental bits here and there that I like. So
I don't understand why they're considered such a classic band.

It wasn't just you - I've heard all sorts of good things about that album
from various sources. So when I found a rare copy at that Encore going-
out-of-business sale, I pounced on it. I think a lot of the problem is
that it wasn't what I was expecting at all. I thought it would be a lot
"spacier".

>But having given it a spin the other day, and knowing
>some of your proclivities, I can see that there are some aspects of it you

Well, it's not really the vocals and lyrics (although I'm not wild about
those) - it's the music. There are some really good parts here and there,
but for the most part it just sounds like standard rock-n-roll to me.

>But if I saw the phrase "worse-than-average psychedelic garage band music" I
>would think of something with a lot less compositional fiber than this --

"Garage band" proabably wasn't really what I wanted to say. Just that
they're more of a psychadelic/straight rock band than a space/prog band,
which is what I was expecting.

Still, I'm glad I bought it. If I hold onto it for a while, and it never
comes back in print, maybe I can finance my retirement off it. ;-)

Yesterday I spent most of the day watching the "Kids in the Hall" marathon
on Comedy Central. This reminds me of one of my favorite bits:

Dave Foley: I know it's a cliche, but my favorite album is still Sgt.
Peppers by the Beatles. You're familiar with that album?

Other guy: Um, no. Who are the Beatles?

Dave: You don't know the Beatles? They were the biggest group of the 60s!

Other: Oh, well, you see, my dad kept me locked in the basement for most
of the 60s. They only fed me pancakes and pizzas, since that was all that
would fit under the door. I didn't have a radio, so I missed all the music
of the 60s.

Dave: Oh, wow, I'm sorry. I had no idea. That must have been horrible.

Other: OF COURSE I KNOW WHO THE BEATLES ARE, YOU MORON!

"Black Eyed Man" the best.

Thanks for putting them up. I've only downloaded the one from
_Creazione_ so far, and no, I don't find the vocals annoying at all.
The track itself was a little underwhelming, and was a little
reminiscent of Duran Duran (just kidding), so I'd have to hear more
before adding these guys to my "Must Buy" list. I'll get the _Eclissi_
track a little later.

And BTW, there's a bunch of other stuff on that page I wanna hear, so
don't be deleting those anytime soon ;)

Rick,

Thanks for letting me know what you thought of A Piedi Nudi. As for
Italian prog in general, I'm entirely ignorant of it, with Il Balletto
di Bronzo being the only exception. I've never even heard Locanda Delle
Fate, and they seem to get rave reviews everywhere I look.

There are quite a few Italian-fetishists on rec.music.progressive, so my
curiosity is piqued. So many bands, so little time.

Well, like I mentioned, I just picked the shortest track on each
album to make uploading/downloading the MP3s easier. That track
from _Creazione_ probably isn't the most representative one - there's
a lot of vocals and not as much "crunch" to that track as there is
in most of APN's music. The _Eclissi_ track features more of the
"heavy" stuff, so between the two songs you should get a good idea
what the band sounds like.

> And BTW, there's a bunch of other stuff on that page I wanna hear,

It'll be up there for a while. Until I start obsessing over some
new CD, and put up samples from it. But since I have no money for
buying CDs right now, I'd say the samples on that page are safe for
at least a couple months.

There's a thread going on rec.music.progressive right now that's yet
another variation on "my music collection is bigger than yours", but
what the heck, it's fun.

Someone created a web site where they listed the "essential" albums
in various sub-categories of prog. It's just their opinion of
course (and they have some strange opinions), but the page is at:

http://users.erols.com/mkoz/query.htm

People on r.m.p have been tabulating how many albums from each
category they own. It might be interesting to see how folks on
ProgAndOther stack up.

Here's my totals:

Mainstream prog - 19/25

Best of The Rest - 0/20 (wow, guess I don't agree with their idea of
"best")

Italian - 1/15 (I've got Per Un Amico, which I think is the original
version of the English-language "Photos of Ghosts")

Canterbury - 5/10

Fusion - 1/10 (I need to buy more but, dammit, Boud Deun should be on
their list)

Early UK prog - 0/12 (I haven't even heard *of* half those bands)

Progressive Pop/Folk - 0/10 (er, I used to own some Alan Parsons and
Moody Blues once...)

Heavy prog - 2/10 (Song for America is "heavy"?)

RIO - 4/10 (although the Henry Cow, 5uus and UZ are on my "must buy"
list)

Neoprog - 2/10 (Anekdoten is neoprog? Did I miss a meeting on that?)

Modern Rock/New Wave - 0/10 (that stuff is prog? Must have missed
that meeting too)

Here is the first show of what may be termed proto-prog (it's not
quite there, yet, but, is definately heading in that direction, and
laying the groundwork for later bands to improve and expand
upon ).

Here is the playlist of the 84th ProgRealAudio show,
made available today at
http://www.onelist.com/files/ProgRealAudio/

Artist / Song Title / Album Title

Yes / Beyond and Before / Yes
I think most people's Yes collection begins with _The Yes Album_, which
is a shame because their first 2 albums are quite excellent. These first
2 albums have the line-up of Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Bill Bruford,
Peter Banks (on guitar), and Tony Kaye (on keyboards). Peter Banks
is a very capable guitar player and brings in some jazzy elements,
and some powerful crunchy guitar. When listening to these early albums,
it is evident that Steve Howe modeled his stlye after Peter Banks
on these early albums. In addition to the original songs on the album,
there are cover-songs of the Byrds and the Beatles.

Jethro Tull / My Sunday Feeling / This Was
Jethro Tull's first album is more blues oriented than their later
albums. In these early days, the band forged together a mix of
jazz, blues, folk, rock, and classical into an original sound
that is one of the most influential on the early 70's progressive
bands. There are some pretty great blues-rock moments like Cat's
Squirrel featuring the Clapton-like guitar playing of Mick Abrahams.
But, I am glad that Martin Barre took over the duties of guitar
on the next album, because his playing was more forward looking
and eschewed the grand-standing blues-guitar solo style.

Cream / World of Pain / Disraeli Gears
Cream is one of the first power trios, along with the Jimi Hendrix
Experience. Clapton first garnered fame in the Yardbirds, but,
dropped out of the band because of the pop direction the band was
moving in. He reputation then grew with a short stint in John Mayall's
Bluesbreakers. The Cream then formed in 1966 and released _Fresh Cream_,
which has some nice moments, but, does not yet show what they were
capable of. _Disraeli Gears_ finds them continuing to develop an electrified
American blues with strong psychedelic colorings. It's a pretty great
album and one of my favorites when I was a wee lad. Still sounds great.

Yardbirds / Shapes of Things / (Beckology)
It is very difficult to figure out what the actual Yardbirds album
releases were. There are hundreds of compilations, archives, best-of's...
At this time in the sixties, a lot of bands were relegated to releasing
singles and foregoing the LP treatment. I recorded this track from Jeff
Beck's _Beckology_ compilation. This track is truly remarkable for
the time that it was recorded (1965), particularly because of Jeff Beck's
guitar
playing. Waves of distorted guitar, feedback and a spine-tingling
guitar solo that must have sparked the imaginations of many aspiring
guitar players. Jimmy Page was the bass player in the band at this
time. In the 1996 movie "Blow Up", you get to see the Yardbirds
perform 2 songs in a night-club, wherein Jeff Beck smashes guitar on
stage. Jolly good fun.

Family / The Chase & See Through Windows / Music in a Doll's House
This is Family's first album, which is possibly their best.
It is an incredibly original forward looking psychedelic progressive
album. The usual rock instruments are supplemented with sitar, violin,
cello, mellotron, and some occasional some horns. Roger Chapman's vocals
are unusual and powerful. The band continued to be mildly progressive,
but, were a bit closer to hard-rock.

Pink Floyd / Julia Dream / Relics
This album collects some singles from the Syd Barrett era of the band, like
"Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play", as well as a couple of tracks from
_Piper at the Gates of Dawn_ and the soundtrack _More_. After their first
album, Syd Barrett, who was the leader of the band at the time, starting
flipping out and the future of the band was uncertain. But, with the
addition of David Gilmour the band went on to become one of the best and
most important rock bands ever. This song is one of my favorite songs by
any group. The melody of this song runs through my mind all the time,
even if I have not listened to it in months.

Traffic / Dear Mr. Fantasy / Mr. Fantasy
This is the first album of Traffic and the best of their 3 albums
to be released in the 1960's. This original lineup included Dave
Mason, who went on to a very prolific solo career and was probably
more successful than Steve Winwood in the 70's. The music is sometime
raw and in your face like the title track and other times is more
pop-psychedelic. The band in this era probably did not contribute
much to the progressive movement as their song structures were
pretty standard. But, you can hear the influence of Steve Winwood's
vocals in many early 70's progressive bands.

Soft Machine / Why are We Sleeping ? / The Soft Machine
Soft Machine's first album is certainly one of the most influential albums
on the progressive music scene. Just as you can hear the Soft Machine's
influence pervade many other later bands, you can hear earlier influences
in the Soft Machine. In Lullabye Letter, for example, you can Louie Louie,
and in Hope for Happiness you hear Purple Haze. This is the only album
which includes Kevin Ayers, who went on to a prolific solo career (of
which I had heard nothing). Though the music has a lot of elements of
60's psychedelia and art-pop, it is very progressive

Well, I certainly didn't do very well at all by these standards.

On charts: 44/?

Mainstream: 10/25

Best of Rest: 0/20 (though Anthony Phillips is on my short list)

Italian: 0/20

Canterbury: 0/10

Fusion: 0/10

Early UK: 0/12

Prog pop/folk: 0/10

Heavy: 1/10

Neoprog: 5/10 (Ironic. I don't even *like* a whole lot of neoprog.
One of us -- either me or that website owner -- doesn't have a clear
understanding of what that genre really is. Anglagard and Anekdoten are
neoprog?? If so, count me in as another neo-fan after all. But you
still won't see me anywhere near SOARfest ;)

Modern/New wave: 0/10

For shame! NO Beatles in your collection? You didn't grow up in the communist
block did ya Steve :). Anyway, all kidding aside, you are absolutely correct
about the new Yellow Submarine. I was disappointed that they didn't keep the
Martin score, but having additional, re-mastered, tracks from other records is a
real bonus. To my knowledge, this is the ONLY Beatles music that's been re-mixed
digitally. I think all the rest are AAD

I agree with Shellyn. To me, Trinity is the one to own if you're only gonna have
one. Black-Eyed Man is my next favorite though.

Let me clarify.......I did not have any Beatles on cd, but I did have most of
their stuff on vinyl.

I think it sound noticeabley better than the other earlier re-mastered discs.
Hell, the thing sounds like it was recorded yesterday instead of 30 years
ago.

Inspired by its sister thread, I'm curious about the size of y'all's
collections (no, I'm not from the South). I know it's been beat to
death repeatedly on r.m.p. over the years, but since I don't really
"know" anyone there it's been only marginally interesting to me.

I noted with alarm that Bob Eichler's Frank Zappa collection alone is
larger than my entire CD library. Naturally I felt...inadequate. My
manhood felt threatened. It should be noted that I am undergoing
periodic library enlargements, but it's a slow and sometimes painful
process.

I only own 82 CDs. My growth was stunted in my 20s when I was battling
a severe bout of "fundamentalist" Christianity and I nearly completely
lost interest in music. About 100 vinyls survived the Great Purge of
'88 only because they were safely tucked away at my parents' house a
long distance away. The rest perished in the lake of fire, as it were.
In any case, I feel better now, and have discovered "modern" prog
relatively recently.

So my point is that my count stands at: 82 CDs, approx. 100 vinyls,
approx. 20 old cassettes. And I'm not counting things like my illegit
dubbed copy of Yes' _90210_ or _95213_ or whatever that perversion of an
album is called. I'm only talkin' legitimate possessions here.

Let's see........I have somewhere around 550 cd's, and around 300 vinyl
albums.
