Hi Paul

I'm not sure I got your words 5/5, but I suppose I get the meaning ;-)

Don't worry, you'll hear me shout on time. I suppose everyone is aware that
there are plenty of footages on youtube worth mentioning, I just trust you
not to overdo it. A nearly 600 members group (13 more and we've reached
that!) could as well be flooded with several topics at a time, some of which
would not necessarily raise everyone's interest. It is not the case, and I
suppose subscribers know what they're doing (except maybe the last one, who
broke the record by leaving after 12 hours!)

Hello all,

I'm interested to know just how many of us came to our appreciation of early
jazz the round about way. For example: with myself it was a room mate whose
aquainting me with Miles Davis that first got the juices flowing so to speak,
Miles of the Bitches Brew era none the less, lol. I was totally ignorant to
begin with, didn't get it and had to be taught how to listen, lol. Listen for
things other than what I listened for in rock, folk, pop. It was an education.
Thank you Eugene!!! Gradually, over the years, I began working my way backwards;
through Thelonius, Bird, early Miles; back to Louis, Mr. Waller and Jack T,
then back even further to the roots: Morton, Bessie, and Pine Top.

Anyone else take the round about way?

Cheers

Larry

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess I went backward in time as well -- just not over anywhere as long a
journey.

My Dad was a Benny Goodman fan; he would call me to the living room every time
he heard Goodman on the radio (we didn't have a phonograph until I was able, as
a little kid, to hook up a turntable to the big Admiral radio we had in the
living room.

I became a BG fan, too, especially with his small group (trio, quartet, quintet,
sextet).

Then I took piano lessons from a guy who taught me to play with a fake book (he
had a career accompanying silent films). Very quickly I was able to play
recognizable stuff.

I was 10.

When I got to high school, somehow a number of other guys who could play and I
got into Dixieland -- aided by the intense Dixie revival of the early '50s --
before Elvis and the Beatles took over the popular media.

We went on to put together a Dixieland band when I was a high-school senior --
we played for dances, on a TV talent show, and wherever anyone would listen.

My love of trad jazz was intensified when I attended college in Boston, and
caught the big-name, old-time, Dixie bands that came through and played at the
Savoy and other clubs, to say nothing of Symphony Hall!

Oh, for the old days!

Very few venues for trad jazz groups now -- I'm working in the area to develop
others.

Any information on his family ties in Baltimore during the first
decade of the 20th century...? Specifically, I'm wondering if he's
related to Harriette Snowden of Baltimore (an early supporter of
Father Divine).

Hi Larry,

My Dad was and continues to be quite a music fan, he turns 80 this June!

When I was a kid he was into popular music more than anything so my only
exposure to Jazz though him was Acker Bilk. He did like Miriam Makeba though so
I did get a bit of world music appreciation from that.

I took piano lessons as well and when my piano teacher's home was flooded and
her brand new, and uninsured, baby grand was seen floating around in her
basement she moved soon after and I moved onto guitar. Played in rock group for
many years; late sixties, early seventies.

It was in 1974 that I roomed with my friend Eugene who was into Sonny Rollins,
Miles, etc.. I can still remember the first few times I really began to get into
Miles. I've been looking back ever since lol. I've even collected a nice
selection of 78s with some great music from Fats Waller and the like.

For those list members who have not yet learned of the death of Jeff
Healey (due to lung cancer), here is the obituary from today's New York
Times:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/04/arts/music/04healey.html?
ref=obituaries

As many of you know, Healey was best known as a blind blues/rock
guitarist, but he was also a serious fan of traditional jazz (30,000
78's in his collection), playing with his group called The Jazz Wizards
(I highly recommend their CD "It's Tight Like That"). He also worked on
several productions for the Jazz Oracle label (which, thankfully, has
recently updated its website after a long hiatus). I especially like
the version of "You're Lucky To Me" that Healey did in collaboration
with John R.T. Davies & Richard Sudhalter (among others) that appears
on "A Gift From the President," Jazz Oracle's tribute to Davies.

Hello Everyone. I hope I do this right...

My name is Katie Cavera and I'm a Guitar / Banjo
player from California. Currently, I'm in Paris,
France playing in a production about Josephine Baker.
We're actually touring right now but when we aren't on
the road, they have us staying here in Paris.

I'm contacting the list because I'm trying to find
Traditional Jazz places here in Paris. I'd love to
find some jam sessions and meet other French Jazz
musicians that are interested in Traditional Jazz. (Or
Gypsy Jazz, or New Orleans Jazz, or...well you get the
idea...) If that's not really possible, then I'd just
like to find some venues where I can hear other bands
playing Traditional Jazz. Any advice you could give
me would be great.
Mercí,

Katie Cavera
http://www.katiecavera.net/

ps in a few weeks our tour will take us to the South
of France (Nice and Aix-En-Provence for almost three
weeks.) so if anyone has any tips for that part of the
country too that would be great!

Possibly of wider interest, so:

The weekly Pariscope, available from any news-stand, is the local list of
current gigs. It covered traditional jazz when I last knew. Unless foreign
languages really frighten you, don't be fobbed off with the English edition.

Jazz Hot is still published and still obtainable from better magazine
sellers. It had quite good gig lists last time I saw one, but of course they
cover all types of jazz.

Jazz Classique, which is devoted to jazz which swings, is I suspect
obtainable only on subscription. Subscribe (Guy Chauvier, 1847 route de
Montfort, 27500 Corneville; <http:jazz-classique.free.fr>)!

Current issue list gigs at Meridien Jazz Club Lionel Hampton, 81 bd Gouvion
St-Cyr; Le Caveau de la Huchette, 5 rue de la Huchette; Le Petit Journal St.
Michel 71 bd St Michel; Petit Journal Montparnasse, 13 rue du Com. Moderne;
and several less regular places.
The Huchette, which hasn't changed very much since Bechet played there, is a
must!

The French magazine Jazz-Dixie/Swing is more narrowly traditional/gypsy than
Jazz Classique and is primarily aimed at musicians. Published by le Jazz
Club de France, 189 avenue Fernand Prévost, 27160 Breteuil sur Iton, it has
gig lists France-wide. It's an essential read for anyone wanting to keep
abreast of French jazz. It doesn't appear to have any kind of web presence,
not even an e-mail address. They would know about anyone who is open to
sitting in.

The venerable Bulletin du hcf, recently revamped for the 21st century,
covers festivals but has no gig lists.

Local knowledge, Patrice?

Hello!

While on the subject of Dixieland, does anyone have this 2 CD,
40 track compilation from 2000? It is long out of print and I have
searched and cannot find it available anywhere. It is the original
Papa Jac, Frank & Fred Assunto, Pete Fountain lineup beautifully
documented by the Audio Fidelity process, new at the time.

Absolutely Right, pgronemeier,

The DOD today is nothing like the 'real' Dukes of Dixieland of
the 50's!! At that time, Pete Fountain was still eager and learning
his chops.
The Estate of Frank J Assunto has filed suit for improprieties
committed against the Assunto Family and the name "The Dukes of
Dixieland". It is like a crime to have taken the name after the
likes of Papa Jac, Frank & Fred Assunto, Jack Maheu, Lowell Miller &
Betty Owens departed. Also, no recording process has approached the
Audio Fidelity discs of the time. This is exactly why I have
searched in vain for this compilation of the old 'original' group.
It is as if everyone has been turned off by the performances to which
you refer.
Thanks for covering this important aspect.

I hadn't heard that the Assuntos had died.I have a few of those Audio-Fidelity
LPs in my
collection. In fact,I see them quite regularly in the thrift stores with or
without Al Hirt.I get
them from fifty cents to a dollar each.

No you didn't. The procedure works 100% for people who can read, and click

I rejected you post, which had no reason to be sent to the whole group, but
seeing that you
belong to the category of people who provide good reasons for joining a
restricted group and
decide to leave after a month, I though everyone might be interested in
learning that "Hello", "Thank you" and "Good bye" are
not part of your vocabulary either!

Good riddance (I heard that Monsieur Sarkozy found a better phrase ;-)

Hello Dan,

There is quite a nice site about the original Dukes Of
Dixieland, put out by the family and with a lengthy history and news
of their legal battle.

Thank you for the website.I think those albums may have been recorded sometime
in the
late fifties or early sixties.I had, some forty odd years ago,a Columbia LP of
them but I
remember them issuing a spate of classical music albums.I also remember that
Audio
Fidelity claimed that it was they who released the first true stereo LP back
in 1957.Those
were the days when the manufacturers told you just what equipment they
used:everythi-
ng from the mikes to the cutting lathes, cutting heads, tape recorders to the
actual record-
ing tape that was used at the session.Audio Fidelity also released an album of
Satchmo
paying a tribute to King Oliver. That particular album was also released with a
different tit-
le but it escapes me at the moment. The personnel was the same as the album
Satchmo
cut for Kapp Records circa 1964.That particular album was "Hello,Dolly".Back
to Frankie
Assunto:I think he would have done nicely on TV.

Jimmie Lunceford made a Vitaphone short in the early 1930s. I am not
sure of the exact date. They start off playing Rythm is Our Business
then, You can't Pull The Wool Over My Eyes, then a tap dance routine
then get into a boiling version of Nagasaki.

My question-

Does anyone know where I can purchase a copy of this video?

Hello--this short is available as an extra on the DVD of the Fred Astaire-Ginger
Rogers
movie "Follow the Fleet." Here's more info:

http://www.amazon.com/Follow-Fleet-Fred-Astaire/dp/B0009NSCQ2/ref=sr_1_2?
ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1205250812&sr=1-2

In the olden days, it was available on a laserdisc compilation called "Swing,
Swing, Swing!"
issued in 1994 by MGM/UA Home Entertainment. This box set is worth seeking
out--as is
a laserdisc player. The other shorts on this set are terrific, too, and not
available on DVD
or even VHS tape.

The short is "Jimmie Lunceford & His Dance Orchestra," with The Three Brown
Jacks and
Myra Johnson. Songs are "Rhythm Coming to Life Again," "Rhythm Is Our
Business," "You
Can't Pull the Wool Over My Eyes," "Moonlight on the Ganges" and "Nagasaki." It
was
Vitaphone release #2062, released in December 1936, and directed by Joseph
Henabery.

The Lunceford film is from 1936 and it is easily available as a
bonus feature on the Astaire-Rogers FOLLOW THE FLEET DVD.
It's a beautiful print!

Are you the same Randy who wrote "Laurel and Hardy- The Magic Behind the Movies"
? If so, I love that book on my two favorite people.

Yup, guilty as charged. I'm working on a major revision/update which should be
out this fall.
Thank you for your nice comments, and Stan and Ollie are two of my favorite
people, too!
