As a suggestion, rather that mix this subject up with other general and
Miditzer related discussion in the Forum Green Room that are not related
to real a 216 why not do it here. This group was set up to discuss the
restoration of what I thought at the time was the only 216 still in
existance. A lot was discussed here which might be useful with the
California 216 and ideas and experience learned related to the
California 216 will probably be useful with the Rialto 216.

I invite members of this group to participate in a discussion of how the  reconstruction of the California Theatre's Style 216 in San Bernardino should proceed at:
http://virtualorgan.com/forum/

Registration is required to post but Joe Barron and I run that Forum and your name isn't going anywhere else.

The California 216 is the last 216 still in its original home.  However, it has been significantly altered while there.  There are some important decisions that need to be made about how to proceed from where we are at with this organ.  Your input into these decisions is appreciated.

Hi Jim. The entire relay/switchstack was damaged, but the switches
are relatively intact. The relay is worse, having several of its
glass 'doors' gasketed with two or in one case (if memory serves)
three layers of leather gasket to even out the warped wood. The
California Theatre project could have the relay if they wanted it,
but as you said there are lots of e-p relays out there, most in
better shape. Shoot, it I had known they needed it, I gave away a
style 235 and a style 240 relay a couple of years ago. I've never
been a big fan of e-p relays, having spent most of 30 years taking
care of a friend's pipe organ, which had Smith relays, and Smith
relays were, generally, less troublesome than Wurlitzer. I'm going
solid-state for my own instrument! Out of the organs I used to take
care of regularly (two Robert Morton, one Wurlitzer, one Smith), most
of the problems I trouble-shot were relay or switching problems. All
had original e-p relays.

Regards,
Bob

Bob,

There is another 216 project, the restoration of the Style 216 still
in its original installation at the San Bernardino California theatre.
I've heard that a portion of its EP relay was water damaged by a
leaking roof. The section that controls the Tibia is kaput. Would
there be any chance of taking parts from the Rialto relay to restore
the California relay? This would be poetic more than necessary.
There are plenty of EP relays available for the taking so I am not
concerned about finding parts for the California.

Hi Russ. Because I could not verify that any of the pipework
actually came the Rialto, and the fact that the relay had been water
damaged in the theatre before I got it, the only thing that will be
returning is the console. I think that the commissioners were wise
not to want the relay. Personal opinion, but I think that solid
state is a smaller, more reliable way to go. In a short 'history' of
the organ that I wrote for Marinel, I noted that at the sale whence I
got the console, the rest of the main chamber was sold to other
buyers. The solo, of course, was destroyed in the fire.
This is only the start, folks! There's a lot of work to do. There
are a lot of folks determined NOT to put a pipe organ in the
Rialto. The local (?) Allen dealer wants to put an electronic in
there, and there are a lot of reasons why the idea is
practical. Note that SOUND is NOT one of them!

Take care!

Regards,
Bob

That is fantastic Bob. I e-mailed Marinel about 3 weeks ago asking her
for an update. I know that she and the other members of the development
commision enjoyed the Concert in the Rialto at the ATOS Convention but
I hadn't heard anything since. Maybe she now she will write. Is it just
the console or the pipes as well?

It is just 10 months since I started this group and 8 months since the
convention. Jim, Theatre Organ has to run that magazine especially after
all the things and reminiscenses that were mentioned at the convention.

Wow I wish I lived down there. So now we know that they want the organ
are we back to discussing what we are going to hang on it?

Hi, Folks.

The Bone Doctor here with some new music at Walnut Hill!

Today, Tom Hoehn, the Bone Doctor and Kimmy went to Grace Baptist
Church so Tom could do some rehearsing the day before his scheduled
concert for the monthly MTOS meeting on December 18th, 2005.

The Walnut Hill Mobile Recording rig was taken along and the session
was recorded. We are in the process of posting several tracks from
this session on Tom's new Grace Baptist Church Music Downloads page.
Not all the tracks are up yet, so stay tuned as we complete the
editing and file transfers.

During a break in Tom's reheasal session, the Bone Doctor took the
bench of the Mighty 4/32 WurliTzer and did five new tracks, which are
now posted on his Sessions page, for a current total of 19 songs
recorded on this majestic instrument.

Some of the songs have been recorded on other instruments, but the
Mighty WurliTzer at Grace really brings out these tunes, and gives
you another slant on the many different sounds various organs can
make as you compare them to some of the other tracks Doc has done
elsewhere.

To hear the new music, go to the site via the link in my signiture
below. Once inside, click the right hand spinning yellow arrow to
take you to the Walnut Hill Gazzette. Scroll down to today's news and
follow the links in today's Daily News.

Enjoy, and Happy Holidays!

Hi, Folks.

The Bone Doctor here with some breaking news about Walnut Hill's
website.

Tom Hoehn is a prolific organist, playing every chance he gets.
Lately, we have been very fortunate to be able to record many of his
wonderful performances at the King of Instruments.

These have included sessions on the J. Tyson Forker Memorial 4/32
Mighty WurliTzer installed at Grace Baptist Church in Sarasota,
Florida, The 3/12 Grande Page Theatre Pipe Organ installed at Pipe
Organ Paradise east of Wimauma, Florida, the 3/12 Robert Morton
Theatre Pipe Organ installed at the Polk Theatre in Lakeland,
Florida, the Mighty Allen MDS317EX Digital Theatre Organ installed at
the Shell Point Retirement Community in Shell Point, Florida, Dan
Rowland's Mighty MidiTzer in Saint Petersburg, Florida, the 3/18
Mighty WurliTzer Theatre Pipe Organ installed at Lake Brantley High
School in Orlando, Florida and the 3/23 Mighty Kimball Theatre Pipe
Organ installed at Bob Markworth's residence in Omaha, Nebraska.

At Walnut Hill's main website, you can hear all of Tom's great shows
on his newly revised Music Downloads page.

Today, we updated Tom's Music Downloads page to make things easier to
find and make room for more content from this gifted artist. There
are now eight pages where before, there was only one long page.

To see the new additions, go to the site via the link in my signiture
below. Once inside, click the Artist button at the top of the page
and when that page loads, select Tom Hoehn from the list of Featured
Artists.

When that page loads, click on a picture to go to any of the eight
pages in this section, where you can download songs from each one of
Tom's performances on many great instruments. As we record more
sessions, more pages will be added, so stay tuned...

I want to thank all who the fine people who visit Walnut Hill, making
it one of the most popular TPO websites on the internet today.

God bless and happy playing.

Hi, Folks.

The Bone Doctor here with some news for folks who love to listen to a
Conn Theatre Organ as much as they love playing one.

Last night, I unlimbered my recording equipment and fired up Gabbie,
my trusty Conn 640 Vacuum Tube Theatre Organ.

I recorded eleven tunes. Lots of mistakes and clacking pedals 'cuase
the old gal needs work, just like the old fart that played her.

Anyway, if you want to hear what I did, go to the Walnut Hill Website
via the link in my signiture. Once inside, click the Player button at
the top of the page (one of the fourteen square buttons) and when
that page loads, choose the Bone Doctor's Conn 640 from the list.
Finally, scroll down untill you encounter the list of songs near the

Like I said, they are rough diamonds but shiny nontheless.

Hi, Folks.

The Bone Doctor here with new music from Tom Hoehn at the Don Baker
Memorial 3/18 Mighty WurliTzer Theatre Pipe Organ installed at Lake
Brantley High School in Orlando, Florida.

On Novenber 27th, the Orlando Area Theatre Organ Society held its
monthly meeting wherein Tom gave a ninety minute concert on the Don
Baker Memorial 3/18 Mighty WurliTzer.

In these recordings, there is a popping noise that is the sound of
the Swell Shades clacking due to worn out felt. We could not
eliminate the noise from the tracks. Nonetheless, the organ sounds
great under the hands and feet of this marvelous musician.

To hear this new material, go to the site and click on the Artists

loads, choose Tom Hoehn's Music Downloads from this lis. Then, scroll
down to the bottom of the page to find a list of seven songs from the
concert, his second recorded performance on this wonderful WurliTzer.

Enjoy!

Hi, Folks.

The Bone Doctor here with some news.

On October 30th, 2005 during a Sunday evening at the First United
Methodist Church in Clearwater, Florida, Tom Hoehn gave us a special
treat. He took the bench of the magnificent 4/93
Rodgers/Rufatti/Wicks Church Pipe Organ at the church and played for
a silent movie presentation of the 1925 box office hit, Phantom of
the Opera. These new tracks are now available on his Featured Artist
page.

This was no minor event. Long in planning, ATOS Vice President Bob
Davidson was there to introduce the movie and Tom, who came out on
stage dressed in a black cape as he sidled up to the massive organ.

There are a total of four tracks that, when listened to end to end
one right after the other, are the complete program as performed that
night. These are large files, especially parts 1 and 2 of the

Hi, Folks.

The Bone Doctor here with the Featured Organ for the Month. In
Novenber, we are featuring the 3/12 Robert Morton Theatre Pipe Organ
installed at the Polk Theatre in downtown Lakeland, Florida. This
wonderful instrument is the first Robert Morton we have featured, and
I must tell you after having played it, that it is truly a
spectacular machine with an incredibly golden voice.

We have many pictures and some music to download from the illustrious
Tom Hoehn and myself. To visit the new feature, go to the site, and
once inside, click the Feature button at the top of the page. Then,
click the November 2005 entry from the list.

There are still a lot of great Robert Mortons out there, and we
intend to eventually feature them all as soon as we can. If you
haven't heard Robert Morton Strings, you haven't lived!

Walnut Hill continues to grow with nearly 12,000 visitors for the
year. The month of October was a record setting time for us, with
almost 2,000 visitors. We thank each and every one who comes to
Walnut Hill in search of TPO goodness.

The Theatre Organ Academy has proven to be a great success with 60
students enrolled to date. We have a bunch of knowledgable people all
too eager to share what they know about the King, so enroll today at
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/theatre_organ_academy/ to learn
all about playing the Theatre Organ.

MidiTzer 0.41 is out and this release has so many features you simply
have to download and install it to explore them all. Numerous bugs
have been fixed, making this release the best Mighty MidiTzer ever!
To get your copy visit http://www.virtualorgan.com/ and tell them the
Bone Doctor sent ya.

God bless and happy playing.

For those members of the list in the Clearwater, Florida area, on
October 30th at 7:00 PM, I'll be accompanying the 1925 Lon Chaney
Classic film, "The Phantom of the Opera" (sory folks, no T&F in d-minor
or F&F in g-minor). Musical score by yours truly with apologies to
Leon Boellmann (Suite Gothique). Free will ofering may be taken --
costumes are optional (of course I don't need one, I'm scary enough as
it is).

Just got this e-mail from Marinel Robinson

Hi Russ,
Sorry for taking so long to reply and to thank you for the terrific George
Wright CD. I have been in Thailand doing tsunami relief work -- just
arrived back home to many, many e-mails! In many ways the Rialto event
seems like another lifetime -- has it only been 3 months?
I brought the GW CD with me to Thailand and played it while working. Seems
a lot of people there quite enjoy the organ!
Thanks again!
Marinel

Hi, Folks.

Announcing new music at Walnut Hill.

First up is a recording by the Bone Doctor on Dan Rowland's Mighty
MidiTzer. Dan is in Saint Petersburg for the winter and he brought
his custom built Mighty MidiTzer with him.

Doc went over to see it and played some songs on it. Dan can record
the instrument, so many more sessions are planned. This track was
just to see if it could be done, and it is very rough.

Second up is Gary Klechowitz on the Mighty MidiTzer and the Avalon
Theatre's Mighty WurliTzer Theatre Pipe Organ. Gary is an outstanding
player and he has some great music. There is one song on the MidiTzer
and two so far on the WurliTzer.

All the above selections are on the Walnut Hill Wall of Fame page. To
hear Dan's MidiTzer, go to the site and once inside, click the
MidiTzer button. Then, click the Wall of Fame entry. Once that loads,
click on Dan Rowland from the list.

To hear Gary's music, go back to the Wall of Fame page and choose
Gary Klechowitz from the list.

Enjoy! there is much more to come...

Actually Russ, I got the original "Live..." album when it was first
released. It was impossible, for anyone with any sort of an ear, to
miss the distinctive sound of this little gem! The only thing that I
was going to change was to change the Solo manual 4' Tuba stop to a
5-1/3' Tibia stop, but I haven't done that yet, either. Why
Wurlitzer persisted in putting 4' chorus reeds on is beyond
me. Beyond that, nothing was needed! It is, as I stated earlier,
the finest small organ that Wurlitzer ever made. Too bad they only
made 10 or 12 of them!

Also, you're quite correct about my 'wish list'. I played a nice
3m/13rk Morton for 3 years, and got used to that third manual. What
can I say? I'm lazy!

Bob, who now has to get up off of his moribund posterior and do some WORK!

Hi Doc,

If you go back to the earlier posts on this list you will see that Bob
doesn't neccessarily want this particular console but would rather have
a 3 Manual one for his project, which would then release this one for
its original home. So I guess that the first job would be to find Bob
another console.

Luckily for us, Bob saw the significance of the Rialto 216 organ and has
not altered it.

The issue is money. Also, the little organ needs a home. The Rialto
people want to install an Allen Digital at the behest of Lynn Larson,
who stands to make a commission on the sale, having told them that it
would be more cost effective to go that route. I think that is
codswallop and a total shame, if you ask me.

So, those of us who love the tiny WurliTzer need to band together and
make our voices heard though petitioning and fund raising. Any one
have any ideas?

Not strictly true Richard.

The original request was by Marinel to Bob for the organ to be
reinstalled in the renovated Rialto theatre.

By way of an update, Marinel is working for the South Pasadena
Redevelopement Commission who are purchasing the Rialto at the moment.
ATOS installed an Allen Digital for a concert so that we had something
to listen to at the Convention but the console took up most of the stage
and the speakers took up most of the balcony. There were some good
tear-jerking stories about the days when GW played there and people like
Lynn Larson were in the audience and got the TPO bug. It was a great
concert and I managed to get Marinel and the Commisioners some tickets .
She sent me an e-mail afterwards,

Hi Russ,
It was such a pleasure meeting you today! Talk about serendipity!
We so enjoyed Lyn Larson's show and felt honored to be part of ATOS'
50th anniversary. The commissioners from the Community Redevelopment
Commission who attended the show were very excited and so encouraged to
see so many people in the theatre enjoying a live show! Unfortunately,
this caliber of performance has not happened in the Rialto in quite some
time. As one of the commissioners said to me today, "I'm hoping to see
many more audiences like this in the near future." I can't wait to get
this renovation on the road!
I will keep you posted on what's going on here in South Pas. In the
meantime, I hope you have a safe trip home! I look forward to talking
with you again soon.
  Warmest regards,
Marinel

They may have heard the Allen at the ATOS but thanks to Jim Henry's
funding I have sent Marinel a copy of "GW Live! at the Rialto" so they
can hear what the original organ sounded like. It could easily be
possible to use what we have of the original Organ and add other pipes
or Walker or Allen electronics. Nothing is going to happen until the
Redevelopment Commission has bought the theatre and then it has to be
restored. According to Marinel it could be a couple of years before they
are ready for the organ.

Now might be a good time to contact her again and see how things are going.

Russ
