At the AMICA Convention, Larry Doe's MK4 music roll scanner was
unveiled to our community for the first time. His roll scanner
incorporates a significant breakthrough as it is capable of
capturing printed matter (lyrics, stop changes, etc.)
simultaneous with capturing 100% of
perforation data.
I now have it at home on my roll scanning workstation, and have
developed a web page dedicated to his achievement. It
displays a number of photos of the scanner from various angles,
followed by some screen displays of interest.
I am now comfortable with this scanner, having successfully
scanned Ampico, 88n and 65n rolls. I will shortly be scanning
several hundred Skinner pipe organ rolls that are 10 1/8" wide
paper with pin ends.
These Skinner rolls are loaded with printed instructions for
pipe organ console operation. Without this new MK4 scanner
developed by Larry Doe, scanning these rolls would be an execise
in futility. And without scanning, they will eventually die
and the music contained within lost forever.
The quality of the CIS scan files emerging from the MK4 scanner
is awesome. They must be seen to be believed. What Larry
has achieved is a significant milestone in the evolutionary
development of music roll scanners, for which he is to be
commended.
