have a CIS sensor for sale (or a complete scanner, though I probably can't
afford that as I'm a student).

The Mustek A3 scanner that somebody mentioned is the source that most people
have used in recent years to dig the CIS out of. For a while they were available
for lower cost than the CIS units themselves, due to the huge discount available
from the CIS manufacturer in Taiwan when one orders more than 10,000 units. I am
the guy who, years ago, managed to get about 120 CIS units from the manufacturer
and distributed them at cost to people who were building roll scanners. I have
exactly one CIS left from that time, but I have to admit that with some patience
you probably can find the Mustek A3 scanner on eBay or from some other source of
used electronics for less than the CIS unit from me. I recommend that you go
down that path first, therefore.
