But what are the guide lines for that map?

Agreed!
Another parameter is the intended target device resp. instrument.
But this is not a real problem in my view.
Once you have a map, you can stretch it, shrink it, shift it, twist it as you
like e.g. with tools like Cakewalk and the built in CAL.
My problem is really the initial map!
