I can finally confirm two dates for Trad Masses later this year which
we have been invited to sing for - plus the music!
No 1. Sunday 15th September at the Holy Souls Church in Scunthorpe,
where we have been invited to take our part in what will probably be
the first Solemn High Mass to have taken place in that part of
Lincolnshire for many years....
Music will be Monteverdi Mass for 4 voices, Stanford Beati Quorum Via
(it ties in with the introit and overall theme of the readings) and
Byrd Ave Verum at communion. Propers will be chanted by the regular
Nottingham Cantors + any other voulnteers! The Mass will conclude
with the simple plainsong Salve Regina, which gives me 4 months to
try and persuade Fr. Cahill to use the solemn Salve instead... :-)
Mass No. 2 is the Hallam Diocesan Latin Mass Society's Annual Requiem
on All Souls Day. I've known about the date for some time but hadn't
put music to it as we originally hoped to sing Duruflé's Requiem
liturgically, which would have been absolutely marvellous. Sadly the
Sheffield venues don't have organs capable of doing it justice, so
I'm going for a relatively unknown setting - Victoria's FOUR part
Requiem. Many of you will know we've sung the six part Requiem twice
before, so this will be a little different.
I don't yet know whether this will be a Solemn High Mass or just a
sung Requiem.
All I need now, is to get enough copies of the music!
The music for the Scunthorpe Mass is largely downloadable from cpdl.
I may have to hire the Stanford though. As for the Victoria, I have
ONE copy (imported from France) which itself was rather old when I
bought it, and I suspect is no longer copywrightable, as I've never
seen any other edition - or indeed heard it performed. I'll check,
but I think I can get away with printed copies here!
We have also had another invitation from Fr. Bill East (known to
some as the supple doctor, you'd better ask him why!) to sing in
Pickering again, Steve & I (& other wonderful people on this list -
you know who you are!) think a Traditional Carol Service would be a
great idea. I'll get in touch with Fr/Dr Bill and see what he thinks.
If we think it's do-able and there's a spare Diary Date available
around that time, then we;ll go for it and I'll post the details to
this list.
That's enough for now, it's past my bedtime!
Mike
PS. For those of you who have not yet seen the revised web-site
wonderfully designed by Julie Franceschini - take a bow, Julie :-)
then go to http://www.mike4b.free-online.co.uk/rudgate and feel free
to sign the guest book! I'm tempted to add comments myself, but then,
I'm not a guest!
