Dear All
It's that time again when the shops are full of Christmas goodies and the lights are being put up in the streets - yes, it's October!!
Mike has worked very hard putting together the programmes for this year's services, so I'm taking over for Christmas. We have a booking for a traditional carol service, followed by Benediction, at the church of St John the Evangelist at Allerton Bywater, West Yorkshire. The date is Thursday, 22 December at 7.30pm. Our director, Steve Jandrell, doesn't yet know about this because I've only just confirmed the date, so I hope your'e free, Steve! If not, we'll go to Plan B - I always like to have a Plan B, even if I don't know what it is yet!
I'm looking for volunteers to sing for this, although I know it's a very busy time for most people. The sooner we get a choir together, the sooner we can start practising, although most of the pieces I have put in the order of service are known to many. Since I don't know how many people we'll get, all the 'Rudgate' pieces are 4-part. This is quite good as it means we can sing everything even if we don't get a big choir; and quite honestly, we don't need a big choir. Those of you who have already been to St John's will know that it's a very small church, more like a big chapel. At most it can seat about 90, so we're looking for about 12 singers, 3 per part if we can. Rehearsals will take place from late November, either in York or Allerton Bywater, to be arranged.
I've already done a draft order of service and sent it to the priest, Fr Mark Lawler. To whet your appetite, here are few of the items to be sung by the choir:
Matin Responsory ad Palestrina
O Little One Sweet Bach
Es ist ein Ros' Entsprungen Praetorius
Hail Blessed Virgin Mary Wood
In Dulci Jubilo Gesius (with final verse arranged Bach - it's great!)
Hodie Christus Natus Est Nanino (no, I haven't heard of him either, but this is a really good version)
Quelle est cette odeur agreable arr C V Walsh (can we do it again, please Vincent?)
[if anyone has a really good translation of this French carol, I'd be grateful for the words as I'd like to include them in the congregational sheet]
Benediction:
O Salutaris to the tune Puer Nobis Nascitur (or 'Come thou Redeemer of the Earth' to you and me)
Tantum Ergo plainsong
Adoremus in Aeternum Allegri
Adeste Fideles arr J Cullen, with its brilliant descant in the last verse
Congregational carols include Gabriel's Message, The First Nowell, Unto us is born a Son, and Veni Veni Emmanuel.
If your'e now champing at the bit and can't wait to start rehearsing, contact me to put your name forward as soon as possible. I really hope we get a choir of 12. If we end up with 5 basses and 1 alto, then I apologise in advance that some people will not be able to sing this year; although you are of course more than welcome to come and sing the congregational carols, of which there are quite a few!
I look forward to hearing from you soon, and certainly by Sunday, 13 November. Please reply either to my work e-mail: bforbester@..., or my new home e-mail: b4b.singer@.... It would also be really helpful for the organisation of rehearsals if you could indicate when you are not free to come and practise - either set days of the week, or certain dates.
Regards.
Bernadette

Some of you have been asking about the availability of recordings of recent services so I thought I'd let you know just exactly what I've got. Should you wish to have copies, all I ask for is a donation of £2 per CD to cover my costs. Any surplus will go to the choir.
Bear in mind that these are of course live recordings - warts and all, and the quality varies [though this is generally pretty good] - both the singing and the recordings - some of which were not done by me!
Anyway, here's the list. More details about what we sang etc are on the website www.rudgatesingers.co.uk

Carols by Candlelight is the most popular Christmas concert in York(it will be broadcast on Radio 2 on Christmas Eve at 11.00pm – but its not a patch on being there in the Chapter House!). The tickets go on sale in the Minster (queue at the West Door) between 9.00 and 10.30 on Saturday 3 December – but many people queue well before the published time as they usually sell out.In the unlikely event that they do not sell out, I would have some tickets for sale – do let me know if you are interested.
However, if you definitely want to go to one of the Carols by Candlelight concerts, and don’t want to queue on 3rd Dec, you can make sure of getting the day you want by getting a Season Ticket for £32 – this also gives you the option of ordering a second Carols ticket.
The Season Ticket also covers a concert of French Music (Poulenc’s stunning Mass in G, and Langlais Messe Solenelle) on Saturday 19 November,Bach’s St John Passion on 1 April(bound to be a sell-out as the Northern Sinfonia are the top chamber orchestra in the North with a dedicated following), and a concert of Yorkshire Music on Saturday 1 July.
If you would like a season ticket, let me know straight away and I’ll send you an order form.Otherwise I can get you tickets for any of the concerts individually apart from the Carols by Candlelight (see above…)

Concerts in Leeds and Ripon
Dear Fellow Chorister,
Our choir, Cor Afanedd (pronounced Core Avan- naith), we will be visiting
Yorkshire in October and performing two concerts. There will be no charge
at either venue, but we are obviously keen to attract a good audience for
each performance. If you have any choristers or friends that would like to
attend, would you be kind enough to let them have the information below.
Monday 24th October
Ripon Cathedral, evening concert at 7pm
Collection after the concert with all proceeds going to the Yorkshire Air
Ambulance
Tuesday 25th October
St. John's the Evangelist, Mark Lane, Leeds afternoon concert at 2pm
Collection after the concert with all proceeds going to the Church
Conservation Trust
Regards
Bernie Henderson
Musical Director: Arleen Price
Guest Accompanist: Alan Fewster
Côr Afanedd has developed an outstanding reputation in the ten years since
its creation in 1996. It was initially formed for only one concert, to
celebrate the centenary of Glan Afan School, Port Talbot. However, the
success of this concert encouraged the choristers to form Côr Afanedd and we
have since performed many concerts in venues across South Wales, England,
Belgium and France. Today the four part mixed choir is going from strength
to strength, has 70 members and continues to sing sacred music to large
audiences, frequently for charitable causes.
In October 2000, we were invited to perform Schubert's Mass in G in a
commemorative service at the National Basilica, Brussels, televised by the
BBC. The following year the choir toured France, performing at Rouen
Cathedral and accepted an invitation to perform a concert in the historic
Shrewsbury Abbey, made famous by the Cadfael television series. In 2003, we
returned to Belgium and, following a service at Ypres Cathedral, we were the
guest choir at the evening commemorative service at the Menin Gate. In the
last six months we have appeared twice on the BBC's 'Songs of Praise'.
We are directed by the highly talented Arleen Price and honoured to have
Ingrid Surgenor MBE, the internationally acclaimed accompanist, as our
President.
Guest Soloist - Annwen Williams
The delightful Annwen Williams will once again accompany the choir on tour
this year. She studied at the Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff
and the Royal Academy of Music in London. A highly accomplished artist, she
has won numerous prizes, toured widely in Europe and the US and has an
extensive concert and oratorio repertoire.

Dear all, Singers, Non-Singers or just friends!
Now that we've recovered from Brinkburn, can I draw your attention to the
next invitation which we've received, which isn't that far away!
The Greek Orthodox Church in Leeds, have asked if we can take part in a
Divine Liturgy on Saturday 22nd October @ 1100am. We haven't the people to
sing a fully choral Liturgy this time as we did in Sheffield as it's
Half-Term and clashes with at least one concert, but I'm still looking for
people willing to sing Byzantine Chant [in English!]
Any volunteers will be fed by the Greek Community, and having eaten there on
several occasions in the past, I can guarantee that the food is superb, as
indeed will be the welcome. I'd be grateful for quick replies so I can liase
with Costas regarding rehearsals.
We've also received an invitation from Scunthorpe on 8th December.
Personally I'm not sure about this, as it's a Thursday evening, but I'm
willing if enough people fancy going! The other date is Sunday 20th
November, which would be at 3pm.
Also later this year we shall be returning to the Church of St John the
Evangelist, Allerton Bywater for a Traditional Carol Service. I'd be
grateful if people wishing to take part could let me know NOW when they're
free in the run -up towards Christmas as diaries are filling up
already!.......
Looking further ahead into next year, we've pencilled in 25th March to sing
Haydn's Missa 'Sancti Nicolai' up in the North-East. 10th June looks likely
to be the date of the 10th Anniversary Service when we shall be singing
Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli, as this is the first piece we ever did
back in June 1996. This will be followed by a party. The venue is yet to be
chosen! Also in November next year, we aim to sing Duarte Lobo's Requiem a
8.
Finally, a quick note to our regular singers - though I can't see why this
couldn't be extended to all of you! - if you know of anyone who would like
to sing wonderful music like this in its correct liturgical setting, please
let me know as we're always looking out for people to join us from time to
time. Those of us who have survived the past 10 years know there's no
regular commitment, or pressure to be involved in absolutely every service
that we get invited to do, and it's usually a lot of fun as well as a *VERY*
different experience from singing the same music in a concert performance
or recital.
Many thanks
Mike Forbester

Just a quick message to let you know that the next major service for us will be the 2nd Founders Day Requiem at St Mary's Church, Barnard Castle on 23rd July. As last year this will be the Gregorian Chant Requiem and also as last year I intend the Schola to be wearing the old choir robes which I 'rescued' from Leeds Cathedral - affectionately known as sackcloth - those of us who have worn them will know what I mean. :-) - UNLESS I can get enough black cassocks for all the singers......
If anyone knows where cheap [or even free!] cassocks can be obtained, please let me know!

The date is now going to be the 17th. I've already told some of you privately that this would be the case but it's best to let everybody know sooner rather than later! We're still doing Byrd 4 + appropriate Propers, but will have to find other motets than the ones I had planned for 3rd Sept due to the change of date. Parsons Ave Maria is a distinct possibility for Offertory. Communion is still undecided - suitable suggestions welcome!
For those of you who don't know, Brinkburn Priory is in Northumberland, not too far away from Rothbury. While this is by far the most distant of our singing venues to date, I can assure you that the rewards far exceed the effort taken to get there!
Depending on numbers from Yorkshire, we may consider a hire vehicle, but only if its cost effective..... There is a possibility that we could be welcoming singers from the Metropolitan Cathedral in Edinburgh too as well as North-East England.
More later but there are still two Services to do this month.
If you possibly can, please keep 3rd September free in your diaries! This is the provisional date for the Annual Brinkburn High Mass where we intend to sing Byrd 4 + Chant Propers. There is a possibility that the date may be changed to the 17th, but the 3rd is the day the organisers are going for. If you've never been to [let alone sung in] Brinkburn before, all I can say is that it's in a most spectacular location, with an acoustic to die for...
If you've not sung with us for a while, or at all, then this is the one to (re)join us for!

In my last message, I mentioned the possibility of singing Compline again in St Mary's Bishophill. This has now been confirmed for Sunday 3rd July @ 6.30pm. It would be great to see as many of you as possible there.....
I'll contact individual members of the Schola in a separate message as we don't need too many singers. Last time there were only two of us and it worked perfectly! We WILL BE IN SOME KIND OF UNIFORM THOUGH. Depending on numbers, if there aren't enough cassocks/surplices to go round we'll use the old Leeds Cathedral 'Cistercian' Robes.

Dear All, Singers, Non-Singers, friends, and anyone else loosely associated with us!
First of all, many apologies if you've been trying to get in touch via email as my computer crashed completely last week, and the very friendly (& expensive!) engineer who I got to try and rescue it suggested the only thing to do was reformat the Hard Drive and start again.....
So, nearly a week later after many hours slaving away at this computer, having managed to recover almost everything apart from some important email messages I'm back.
The Orthodox Liturgy in Sheffield was a huge success and can I add my thanks to those of Fr Edwin & Fr Ian to everyone who was there.
The next major service for us will be the 2nd Founders Day Requiem at St Mary's Church, Barnard Castle on 23rd July. Before then some of us will be singing at a Mass in Kirkham Priory on 10th July. Bernadette's looking after that one, so if/when the call comes to be asked to sing, you were tipped of here first...
There is also the possibility that we could be singing Compline again in Bishophill. This was so good in May that we would like to go back there and sing fairly regularly if Andrew lets us!
Plans for the autumn include singing Byrd 4 again, possibly up in the North-East, and another Orthodox Liturgy - this time in Leeds.
Next year is our 10th Anniversary! Provisionally we hope to sing Haydn's Missa Sancti Nicolai in Gateshead for the Feast of the Annunciation, Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli as it was the first piece we did, Lobo's Requiem and the small matter of a Party somewhere big enough to accommodate people who have been involved with us over the last decade...
If I have any more news or dates to confirm, you'll see it here first.

Received in the post this morning from Fr Ian, the Deacon. I won't copy the
whole letter, but thought I'd share the gist of it with you.
..Do please convey my personal thanks to the choir for a memorable
performance and for all their hard work. I know I pitched too high at one
point - profuse apologies! - but the joy of a congregation is as nothing to
the joy of a Deacon when he has the opportunity to work with a good choir.
The Cathedral Choir is much praised and has made many recordings, but to my
mind they lack fervour, and I found myself comparing them to the Rudgate
Singers, very much to the latters advantage. ..
I do hope that when you next visit Crowle or Holy Souls [Scunthorpe], I
shall be able to come along and renew auld acquaintance..
With very many thanks..

This Saturday we will be singing our first ever choral Orthodox Liturgy in
the Crypt of Sheffield Cathedral. Our Hosts are the Russian Orthodox
Community of St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne - based in Chesterfield. The Liturgy
commences at 11.00am. If you can come, you would be very welcome and we
would be delighted to see you!

I cannot recommend this choir highly enough! They are a superb group of
singers who specialise in singing wonderful choral music [which I'd love us
to do if we had the singers]. I was talking to Paul Gameson [their Director]
a few days ago, who told me that they are in a bit of a pickle with regard
to finances at the moment - not helped by the fact that their audiences are
sadly not as big as they could be. (If you know him, don't tell him I said
this….!) Bearing this in mind, I wholeheartedly encourage you, if you're in
the area, to come and hear - in my opinion – one of Yorkshire's finest
Chamber Choirs. It's the same day as our Russian Orthodox Liturgy in
Sheffield Cathedral, but I'm certainly going to go.
This season we celebrate our own tenth anniversary and the tercentenary of
the death of Marc-Antoine Charpentier, by exploring French sacred music from
the court of Louis XIV, and also return to the Russian Orthodox repertoire
with Rachmaninov's Liturgy of St John Chrysostom.
Charpentier: Te Deum Saturday, 4th June 2005 7.30pm North Transept, York

We are joined by past members to perform grands motets by the composers and
works that reflect the pomp and majesty of Louis XIV's court. Tickets: £10

Dear friends (Singers - whether you've sung with us or not!) and non-singers alike....
I don't normally resort to writing circular type letters, but as we've achieved so much during the last year, and there are services and other events still to do before Christmas so I'd like to include as many people as possible so you all know what's happening.
First of all, can I thank everybody who has been involved with us over the last 12 months, whether as a singer, supporter, provided information or helped in any other capacity, particularly the clergy & parishioners of the churches where we have sung, and made us feel most welcome.
We've sung in 6 churches (1 Anglican, 5 Catholic) throughout Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire & County Durham. In addition, the Schola Cantorum have sung Chant, both Gregorian and Byzantine mainly with the main choir, but also by ourselves in Allerton Bywater, Barnard Castle, and most notably, with the chanters of the Greek Orthodox Church in Harehills, Leeds!
We have been invited back to every church we've been to. This is great, but the obvious problem is finding mutually convenient dates both for the church and for us so that we get enough singers to do justice to whichever event we've been invited to.
Fr Bill East did suggest a Byrd Mass - complete with Byrd Propers. Other events for 2005 onwards could include a choral Eastern-Rite Liturgy as I'm determined to get the choir involved in one at some stage. What we do have for the remainder of this year are the following events:
2nd October 2004. Solemn Mass [High?] for the Feast of the Guardian Angels - Holy Souls Church, Scunthorpe. Music to include Byrd 4, the chant Proper for the Feast and appropriate polyphonic motets.
13th November 2004. Solemn Requiem Mass. Church of St John the Evangelist, Allerton Bywater. This is part of the Parish's Golden Jubilee events, and may take the place of the vigil Mass that day. I don't yet know which setting we shall use - either Morales or Victoria a 4, but I do know that numbers will have to be restricted to at most 2 voices per part, due to the size of the building. If, as expected, it is the Vigil Mass [the day before Remembrance Sunday] it's likely to be quite crowded, hence the need for a smaller group!
27th and/or 28th November 2004 Carol Singing at the National Railway Museum!
I don't know who it was [if it was one of you - thank you!] but someone gave my name as a contact for the choir to the Programmes Manager of the NRM, who then approached me wanting to book us to sing at various times during their Edwardian Weekend at the end of November. I'm meeting him in September, when I shall have further details for those who are available to sing, but the gist of it is Carol Singing in the Main Hall by the Christmas Tree. There is money involved, which will help swell our new bank account!
18th December 2004. Traditional Service of Lessons and Carols. All Saints' Church, North Street, York. Our first Carol Service in an Anglican church, which may give us an opportunity to sing one or two different things.
In addition to the above services/events involving the full choir, the Schola Cantorum from September onwards will sing on the third Sunday of each month at Allerton Bywater. New and existing members are always welcome to join us.
If any of you want to sing [it doesn't matter if you haven't sung with us before - there's always a first time!] for any of the above events, please let me know. Bear in mind numbers for the Requiem at Allerton Bywater are strictly limited.....
I hope to hear from you soon.

I thought I'd pass this on. It may be of interest to a few of you, if you're available - and if you're not a singer, it should be great to listen to! I've already passed on a few suggestions. If you have any, I'm sure Marion [Marion.Best@...] would love to hear from you....
Dear Mike, I thought you might be interested to know that Cantores choir is planning to host a 40-part choral music workshop on 16th October 2004 at Bootham School. We intend to work on Tallis Spem in Alium and a few other works for either 40- or 20-part choir. Marion will direct and Cantores will provide a few singers for each of the "sub-choirs" (can't remember whether it's 8 5-part choirs or 5 8-part choirs...!).
Please could you pass on this information to any of the Rudgate singers who might wish to take part. Marion suggested that I should also ask you whether you know of any other 40- or 20-part pieces, either from around the same period as Tallis or more contemporary. I think she has some ideas up her sleeve, but the more ideas we can get together the better (especially as some of these monster pieces may not be easily available to borrow).
I'd be very grateful if you could also pass on this information to Bernadette as I seem to have lost her email address in one of our all-too-frequent computer crises. Hope things are continuing to flourish with Rudgate, and many thanks for keeping me informed about your programme - perhaps I'll be able to make one of your dates before too much longer! Best wishes, Kate.

This message is a little late, as a result of me changing jobs and settling in to my new 'Working Environment'
I'd like to thank everybody who took part in Last Saturday's Wedding. It was a tremendous success and a splendid occasion, and I hope that we will benefit from increased publicity as a result. I hope it's put us well and truly on the map!
The next service will also be at Barnard Castle on 24th July. It's a Gregorian Chant Requiem for the Founders of the Bowes Museum, so we just need Schola [Sorry, for this occasion Blokes only] for this. The next service for which we will need the full choir - unless something comes up in between! - is a Trad Mass for the Feast of the Guardian Angels on 2nd October. This will take place at Holy Souls, Church, Scunthorpe, where we sang the Monteverdi Missa a Quatro Voci back in 2002. Suggestions will be welcomed for suitable music please [!], but the Motet at Communion is already spoken for. It'll be a setting of either Panis Angelicus, or Ecce Panis Angelorum - surprise, surprise - and definitely NOT the Portuguese Melody, if we choose the latter!
If people could let me know whether they're interested for October, I'd be grateful - the more numbers we have [so long as the voices are balanced] the juicier the Mass setting will be!

Dear Mike
After reading the previous email, does this mean the wedding at B Castle is
definitely on?
David
[Yes. But we still don't know for sure what we're singing! One plus is that the
organ is pretty good, so it would be nice to use it, but until Francis comes
back to me with a mass that both he & Julie can agree on, we remain in the
dark....]
Mike
Dear all,
I just thought I'd update you with info about what's happening after
Pickering. We have received definite invitations for specific dates/times,
as well as casual enquiries as to our availability from various churches in
the North of England. I realise we won't be able to do everything, and also
that several people will be involved in events which clash, or will not be
able to sing for other reasons, but over the last 8 years [yes, we have been
going that long!] I've noticed that's always been the case. We do what we
can, when we can, with whoever's available. This isn't a great problem so
long as we don't deviate from our original goal of singing quality sacred
music in it's proper liturgical context (or as close to it as possible). It
seems to have worked so far!
Anyway, the invitations are:
30th May 6pm SS Mary & Joseph's Church, Hedon Solemn Vespers & Benediction
for Pentecost
26th June 12pm St Mary's Church, Barnard Castle Traditional Rite wedding
24th July 12pm? St Mary's Church, Barnard Castle Solemn Requiem [Memorial]
for John & Josephine Bowes
15th August St Margaret's Church Ilkley Mass for the Feast of the
Assumption
November St John the Evangelist, Allerton Bywater Solemn Requiem [Victoria a
6]
There may be things I've forgotten too [I hope not!] I'd be grateful to hear
from anyone wishing to sing, whether available for these dates or not, as
there are bound to be other events coming up!
Many thanks,
Mike
PS. I'm copying this to people who have never sung with us yet, because
there's always a first time.... :-)
Dear Mike
I've not heard of Oberhoeffer but will accept your judgement. Have you
completely decided against the Palestrina?
David
Not at all! I've got no problem with Palestrina, Victoria, or anyone from that
time. Most of have sung Palestrina's Missa Brevis & Victoria's Missa 'O Quam
Gloriosum' with Rudgate, so I'd guess that they would be favourites with me for
Barnard Castle, unless someone can come up with an alternative. I'm a big fan of
Hadyn & Mozart too, and a shorter Mass by one of them could fit the bill, but I
don't know what the organ is like at the church. Also, very importantly, we're
not the only ones with any input into the music!

Personally, I not really keen either. I'm only flirting with the idea
because it's a wedding, and can easily be swayed by other people's
opinions if they're convincing enough! This practice must have been
fairly widespread, because it's referred to in a book I have about
music making in York [including churches] over the last 200+ years.
There's a chapter on catholic church music, particularly the set-up
at St Wilfrid's Church, where professional singers and orchestras
even, were hired to sing during High Mass each week!
I have a Mass by Oberhoeffer, who despite the name was at one time
the Choir-Master/Organist at St Wilf's sometime in the 19th Century.
I'd need other more musical opinions about its merits before
inflicting it upon Rudgate, although he was highly regarded at the
time.
Mike
I agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY about the Gounod. Singing that sanctus the priest could say another Low Mass in between. Mr Carey is absolutely right that the music MUST NOT hold up the 'action of the Mass'. I'd be in favour of a Palestrina Mass which is always "churchy" without being maudlin and the 4 voice should fit the bill. I'm not overly keen on the 'mix-&-match' idea of bits from several masses although your Dad will remember that being regularly done in the glory days of St Michael's choir.
What do people think about the music? [Whether you're available to sing or not]. Personally, unless we can get 3 excellent soloists + organist and increased numbers, the Gounod's not possible. I think it's a glorified concert piece anyway and should have no place in any Liturgical setting, wedding or no wedding! However, that's just my own humble opinion.... :-)
Isn't there a Mass by Mozart that would fit the bill regarding Francis' preference for a "short, but solemn Sanctus" I can think of plenty of jolly Glorias - mainly by Haydn, so it looks like we're not looking at a complete Mass setting by any one composer.
Many thanks for your kind reply. That is very helpful. I haven't heard anything from my American friend, so I may have frightened him off! My fiancée is starting to take quite an interest in the music and the current favourite is Gounod's St Cecelia Mass! Is this part of the Choir's repertoire?
I am of the opinion that choirs are best singing things they know well. Which pieces are the Rudgate Singers' particular favourites?
Do you have any suggestions appropriate to a Wedding? The preference is for a "jolly" Gloria and a short, but solemn "Sanctus." We don't like the priest waiting for the choir and we don't like any music during the Canon (although, of course, it is permitted to do the Benedictus after the Consecration, but neither of us like this). If you have any Masses fitting this bill, it would be useful.
We would also like Mozart's "Ave Verum" and we might like the Veni Creatur Spiritus at the beginning or the Te Deum at the end (apparently, I'm not allowed both!).
In terms of singing the propers, which I think are just as important as the Ordinary, does the choir need help in singing these, or have you a good group used to singing the Chant?
I would be more than happy to make a donation towards your music costs.
We plan to come up North on the weekend of 28/29 Feb (plus 1 & 2 March) to sort out some of the Wedding details and visit Fr Elkin (probably on the Sunday). If you are available, I would be happy to meet (I'm not sure where you are based, so this may not be practical!).
As you can see, we are making some progress, though we are not there yet!
God Bless,
Francis Carey
