The 2nd L.A. Annual Festival of Russian Culture will be held from Friday April 16 - Friday April 23, 2004, at The Pacific Design Center (8687 Melrose Ave., W. SPECIAL EVENT:
Alexander Vasiliev, leader of "Splean," one of the most hip Russian rock bands,
singer, songwriter, guitar player, will perform for the first time in Los Angeles on Sunday,
April 18, 7 pm, at the Pacific Design Center, 8786 Melrose Ave. ($15).
Reception follows.
He will also play with ethnic and jazz performers on the festival opening and closing nights
(Friday, April 16 & Thursday, April 22, 7 pm.)

The screenings of 20 Russian and Soviet films will be introduced by well-known
Russian actors and filmmakers Alexei Petrenko, Irina Kupchenko, Sergei Makovetsky,
Vladimir Khotinenko and Vladimir Mashkov.

Friday April 16, 7 pm FESTIVAL OPENING with the U.S. premiere of the 1918 Russian classic, A Young Lady and a Hooligan, starring 1920's poetic icon Vladimir Mayakovsky. Introduction by famous Russian poet Andrei Voznesensky. An exhibit, featuring archive materials from Vladimir Mayakovsky's Moscow museum, will be displayed in the Center hallway.
Sat. April 17 CENTERPIECE: AN AMERICAN RHAPSODY (2001, Eva Gardos, 107 min) Nastassja Kinski will attend the special presentation and reception for the American made, An American Rhapsody starring Kinski and Scarlett Johansnon. Russian actress and filmmaker Eva Gardos lived in Hungary until age 7, and then was whisked away to Canada. She's written and directed her story in An American Rhapsody.
Sat. Apr. 17 & Sun. Apr. 18, 3 pm Within the festival at the Globe Playhouse (1107 N. King Rd.) two plays by Evgeny Grishkovets will be shown: "How I Ate a Dog" and "At the Same Time."
Sat. Apr. 17, 9 pm Classical music by Dimitri Illarionov (guitar) and Boris Andrianov (cello). These talented young Russian musicians have gained world recognition, winning awards in numerous international competitions. Their 2003 joint release became the only Russian classical album nominated for a Grammy award.
Tues. Apr. 20, 7 pm Poetry represented by the legendary poet Andrei Voznesensky & Jazz music by the trio of Vladimir Volkov, Vyacheslav Gaivoronsky and Andrei Kondakov, each of the three musicians a leader of his own musical group known in all quarters of Russia and abroad. Ethnic music will be represented by Sergei Starostin at the festival opening and closing nights, one of the country's most famous folk musicians and a Russian folklore researcher, playing over 40 different music instruments. All musicians will also perform at the opening & closing parties on Friday, April 16, 7 pm & April 22, 7 pm.
Wedn. April 21, 9 pm Jazz trio performs at La Ve Lee Cafe, 12514 Ventura Blvd. Studio City, 818/980-8158. 5:30-6:30 pm collection of Russian shorts on dvd FALCON CLUB, University of Southern California
Thur. Apr. 22, 7pm A one-man show by the award-winning Alexei Petrenko at the Globe Playhouse (1107 N. King Rd.), known to American filmgoers from his unforgettable performance of Rasputin in "Agony."
