The first annual Russian Winter Festival will take place in West Hollywood and at UCLA on March 5 - 7, 2009.
The new festival will feature the explosively popular Russian music as well as cinema.
David MacFadyen, from the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of California, Los Angeles and a musicologist, put together two nights of music shows on the famed Sunset Strip and at UCLA on Thursday and Friday nights, March 5 & 6 to give Westerners a Slavic treat.
Mumiy Troll, one of Russia’s biggest bands, will appear there on Thursday night, kicking off three nights of Russian culture.
On that Saturday, March 7, at UCLA’s James Bridges Theater, “New Russian Cinema” is celebrated with several films. According to organizers, the films run the gamut of what you might expect from a vital country and culture, including animation, documentary shorts, and a new feature film, all subtitled. All are being shown in the U.S. for the very first time.
The cinema foyer will include a display of work by renowned Los Angeles designer Nataya, herself of Russian and Uzbek origin.
Acoustic music will be provided in between the day’s films (March 7, 4:30 PM - 6 PM) by Moscow-born musician Alex Kiskachi and his band: Leo Chelyapov (clarinet, saxophone) and Adam Levy (double bass).
Entrance is free!
