“Collectif Etoile”
Many of you have been aware of my African music obsession. Some of you even knew that some time ago, I started a rehearsal group of musicians who, like me, wanted a chance to play this stuff. Well, it’s been over a year of playing, transcribing, shedding and debating where the heck the downbeat is, but we’re going to debut the end result.
"Collectif", because it is a collective, and education is the end goal. “Etoile”, from the teacher of all teachers, Youssou N’Dour & Le Super Etoile de Dakar. Come to Anna’s for this special maiden voyage, where you’ll hear Senegalese Mbalax, music from Cameroon, and repertoire from Composers such as Cheick Tidiane Seck, Etienne Mbappe, Martin Atangana and many others. It is really a groundbreaking event, one that we hope inspires more just like it. Please get the word out!
The day after this gig, we’re going to hit the studio and do our first demo. Come out and support the African music that just doesn’t get played enough around here!
Collectif Etoile is:
Ken Husbands & Q Morrow – guitars
Ben Flint - Keys
Damien Masterson – Saxophone & Harmonica
Danny Cao - Trumpet
Aaron Germain - bass
Otto Huber – drums
Idrissa Gueye – Sabar, percussion

continue to hold quarterly meet-and-greet jam sessions at Armando's in Martinez,
CA. The next will be on September 23, 2009. Details will be posted via the Ning
site as the event nears. Thanks to all who have joined us and thanks to Danny
White of Good Stuff Guitar Shop in Martinez for starting the new, improved site.
Hope to see you there!

On Monday, August 10, I'll be one of several west coast jazz harmonica players
participating in the Jazz Harmonica Summit in Santa Cruz:
http://www.jazzharmonicasummit.com/
This concert is a first of its kind:
- Features 9 different jazz harmonica players
- Will include a 5-piece jazz harmonica ensemble
- Will be recorded for a DVD
If you were at the Spring SFBayharpers jam, you saw and heard the harmonica
ensemble. Each of its members will also be featured individually:
Damien Masterson, master of Brazilian and Latin jazz
Michael Peloquin - one of the Bay Area's strongest R&B players, equally fluent
on chromatic and overblow diatonic
Steve Malerbi - A mellow master of chromatic jazz
Winslow Yerxa - Combining jazz with celtic and Canaidan traditional influences
in new ways, on chromatic, diatonic, and tremolo harmonicas.
we'll also have:
- 80-plus year old Pete Blasberg, who can still play blistering uptempo bebop
- Michael Polesky up from Los Angeles on his tenor-tuned Renaissance chromatic
(played thru a bullet mic!)
- Slide man Slim, the organiser of the whole event, who plays smooth jazz guitar
in addition to fine chromatic, in a duo bassist/vocalist Penny Hanna.
The concert is timed to occur one day before Jason Ricci's Harmonica Blowoff in
Sacramento, followed by four glorious days of the SPAH Convention. Sacramento is
only a 2 1/2 hour drive from Santa Cruz, so you can fill up the entire week with
great harmonica entertainment!
On July 15 I'll be playing a gig involving the same people I played with at the
recent SFBayHarpers jam at Armando's.
The gig combines a concert and a barndance at 124 Throckmorton in Mill valley.
The concert part of the evening is by the band "A Thousand Years at Sea," which
includes Colin Cotter, the guitarist in my recent outing at Armando's.
The band's website:
http://www.myspace.com/athousandyearsatsea
Second half of the evening is a barn dance, with a dance caller who is very good
with novice dancers. The band includes bass, piano, guitar, several fiddles
(including Tuula Cotter, who also played with me at Armando's) and me on
harmonica.
Tickets are available at:

Hope to see you there!

Danny White has set up a new SF Bay Harpers account through ning.com, and if all (or at least a majority) of us agree with the change, we'll shift over to that forum from Yahoo Groups.
This meets a couple of goals we've discussed here before -- it enables me to gently bow out as moderator of this group in favor of Danny, and gives us a vastly more interactive Web presence, as you will see by the photos Danny already has put up there. We should be able to post videos and discuss various topics in a more lively fashion than Yahoo allows.
To sign in, if you already have a Ning account, or sign up, go here:
http://bayharpers.ning.com
Check it out and let us know what you think, either through Yahoo or Ning.
A huge thanks to Danny for all he's done and is doing for SF Bay Harpers. We owe him a huge debt of gratitude, starting with a featured set at the next Armando's jam in September.

Hi All -
Though I've been a member of this list since the outset, I've been kind of quiet
and haven't been able to attend any of the events due to the travel time
combined with my very early-to-work weekday schedule (I live south of Santa
Cruz), but it sounds like y'all have been having way too much fun at
Armando's...
I just wanted to pop in and tell you about an upcoming Santa Cruz event, The
West Coast Jazz Harmonica Summit on the eve of this year's SPAH convention. This
will be filmed in hi-def video in front of a live studio audience on Monday,
August 10 starting at 7:30pm. Featured are (alphabetically):
- Pete Blasberg
- Jon Eriksen
- Steve Malerbi
- Damien Masterson
- Michael Peloquin
- Michael Polesky
- San Francisco Harmonica Ensemble
- Slide Man Slim
- Winslow Yerxa
All the details are posted on our recently updated website including sound clips
from all of the above players:

Seating is limited, so reserve yours now and don't miss this fantastic prelude
to the upcoming week-long SPAH harmonica party in Sacramento!

Picked this up via Greg Heumann's post to Harp-L and thought I'd pass it along
here in case someone missed it:
Charlie Musselwhite at Windsor Town Green
Charlie performed 2 masterful sets today (Thursday?) on the Windsor Town Green
in Sonoma County, CA before a crowd estimated at 10,000. He sounded phenomenal -
and could be heard everywhere. Because he was able to drive to the show, he got
to choose any amp and mic he wanted from his own collection, or available
through the show promoters.
Pictures are here:
1) The crowd: http://blowsmeaway.com/charlie_09/crowd_640.jpg
2) The band: http://blowsmeaway.com/charlie_09/band_640.jpg
3) Charlie and his BlowsMeAway mic:

4) The amp - a Sonny Jr. Cruncher: http://blowsmeaway.com/charlie_09/amp_640.jpg
Charlie says "I LOVE THE CRUNCHER AND WOULD PREFER IT ANYWHERE ANYTIME
TO ANY OTHER AMP." And he'll say the same thing about his mic if you
ask him.
It was a great show!

OK, you folks who couldn't make it to last night's session missed a great one. All our featured performers earned encores and there was an especially rousing round of applause and cheers for Winslow Yerxa's trio.
They played a set of Scottish, Canadian and Finnish fiddle tunes and a Gordon Lightfoot song and enthralled everyone. He was joined by fiddler Tuula Cotter and guitarist Colin Cotter (Tuula's son). Fine fine combo!
Mark Fenichel and his pals Jon Lawton and Doug Burns also wowed 'em with a set of acoustic and electric blues that included twin harp by Fenny and Doug. Great, great set!
Larry Marks came all the way from Mount Shasta once again and earned an encore with a wonderful set of blues standards that had the joint rockin'. He also invited all present to the Mossbrae Festival in Dunsmuir, where he will perform with the
Ron Lovelace Band and where Charlie Musslewhite will be featured. That festival is on Sunday, July 25.
The only down side last night was that there was a scarcity of jammers -- where were ya' folks? -- but even that worked out well given the amount of music supplied by our headliners.
We did have one volunteer jammer brave enough to follow all these stellar acts and close the show with two rockin' numbers that had folks on their feet and dancing, and it was his first foray into the spotight: Ron Rawson of Orinda. Congrats to Ron on shouldering the load as the lone first-timer from among our 51 members. Great job!
The one bad, bad, yes, very bad outcome of all having all that talent was that once again Danny White, our co-sponsor for these jams via his Good Stuff Guitar Shop in Martinez, was again bumped off the playlist. We had intended to make sure that he got a full, featured performer's set, but with the 10 p.m. shutdown,
couldn't fit him in and he graciously stepped aside to allow others to stretch out. We vow to give Danny No. 1 priority for a set at the next jam in September.
Thanks to the Hot House Band -- Warren Stewart on guitar, Kennan Shaw on bass and Brett King Cosby on drums -- for another great night of backup.
Thanks also to Roy Jeans for being co-sponsor and prioviding the excellent venue and last night's excellent sound man, whose first name is all I can dredge up today: Joe. Somebody tell me his last name so I can properly identify and thank him!
Congrats to all who showed to play or just listen. And I'm hoping
Fenny and Winslow will post their upcoming gigs to the Group. They are
indeed more than worth seeing.
SFBayharpers 5th Quarterly Jam Session at Armando's, 707 Marina Vista, Martinez,
CA. Be there or be absent and miss a great time!
Bob Loomis
SFBayharpers Moderator
Just two more days before the next SFBayharpers quarterly jam session on Wednesday, June 24, at Armando's, 707 Marina Vista, Martinez, CA.
Winslow Yerxa, who has provided some of the greatest musical moments at our past jam sessions, will be among headliners, this time with a trio. Winslow is one of our SFBayharpers harp gurus and author of the book Harmonica for Dummies. At past sessions he played solo and with Damien Masterson and the
Berkeley Jazzschool Harmonica Ensemble as well as the house band.
This time he'll play with a trio including violinist Tuula Cotter, who is both an experienced folk fiddlers and a member of the first violin section of the Sacramento Symphony, and guitarist Colin Cotter (Tuula's son), who plays guitar and fiddle in the band A Thousand Years at Sea.
At past sessions, Winslow has played everything from blues to Quebecois fiddle tunes to Duke Ellington classics. He is a master of diatonic, chromatic and tremolo harps. It will be exciting to see what he and his band mates come up
with this time.
Diatonic ace Mark Fenichel will be bringing renowned guitarist/singer
-songwriter Jon Lawton (Little Jonny & The Giants, Tip Of The
Top) and will perform a number of acoustic and possibly a
few electric duos. Special guest Doug Burns will also play.
We'll have stellar harpers Danny White and Larry Marks and of course SFBayharpers members will be able to sign up to play with the Hot House Band or with their own accompanists. My own band Awed Ducks, with Peter Sproul on harp, will kick things off.
Jam signups for playing with the Hot House Band or with your own accopanist(s) start at 6:30 p.m., and the music will run from 7 to around 10 p.m. There will be a selection of boutique harp and guitar amps provided by Danny White and his Good Stuff Guitar Shop in Martinez, our co-sponsor, as well as the excellent house sound system and board man. We'll have a few door prizes for SFBayharpers members and no doubt a few musical surprises as well.
Hope to see you there! Bob

They are for a convention going on in Sacramento, in Aug. between the 11Th and the 15Th. I will return them after that, or if you don't want them back, I will get rid of them for you. This is to support the SPAH convention. So you are helping the harp community. Could they be borrowed for a week in August? If you have questions or want to help, please contact me. . Thanks in Advance Eric S
