Hi all,
I've signed up with a new webhosting service, which handily comes with its own
mailing list at my domain. In the next couple of days, I will be setting up a
mailing list at summerrussell.com and begin sending messages to that list
exclusively.
Nothing will really change on your end except for the address that e-mails come
from, and the address you enter if you want to unsubscribe. Therefore, I'm
making this an opt-out move--if you'd rather not continue receiving e-mails from
me, just send me a message and I won't add your name to the new list.
In related news, http://www.summerrussell.com has been completely overhauled
with a new look and updated content. It's now much easier to maintain and
update, which means I have more time and energy to focus on making and recording
music. You can hear my newest song--a sad bit about a bearded lady and a
dancing bear--by going to the site and clicking the link labeled "Music."
And coming this year... fingers crossed... my first studio album, tentatively
entitled "Nothing Ventured." It will contain some of the tracks from my DIY
attempt last year, as well as some new stuff written over the past year.
Thanks for your time. Take care!
-Summer
Apparently it's been two years (!) since I posted anything to this mailing list. For those of you still with me... thank you for not unsubscribing.
Since you're here, I would like to share something with all of you. I'm recording an album. No, really, this time. Having waited long enough for the right recording studio (and that money they always seem to ask for), I have finally jumped on the DIY bandwagon. I have a computer and a condenser mic and Audacity (a lot of it) - and I'm ready to rock. But while I'm doing my pre-rock calisthenics, I would really like to offer you all the opportunity to participate in the creation of this project.
To that end, I have created a not-really-secret page on my website, featuring downloadable mp3 "scratch tracks" of the 11 songs I plan to include on the album. I would love to hear from any of you who are interested in offering an opinion on the song choices. Is there something on there you think doesn't belong? Or a favorite song you really wish I'd immortalize for good in true digital lo-fi glory? I have the songs listed roughly in one of the orders I'm considering, but I'm always open to feedback about that, too.
...Does anybody still listen to a whole album from start to finish?
Anyway, the page is here if you'd like to participate: http://www.summerrussell.com/albumproject.html ...and if you don't want to participate, well, you're still welcome to snag those free mp3s.
The website - http://www.summerrussell.com - is once again undergoing renovations, so there's not much on it right now. Except for those songs.
A new, full-length mp3 is now available for free download from my
website. Check out "Mary and Joseph," now playing at:
http://summerrussell.com/audio.html
Thanks for listening. Stay tuned for more!

If you haven't heard it yet, do please drop in and have a listen to
"Oak Creek Canyon." My most recent tune, inspired by traveling
through Flagstaff last summer, is kinda rockin', and I'm pretty fond of
it--I hope you'll like it, too. Also currently available for
listening and download: "Foot On The Floor," "Ol' Grey Dog," and "A
Little More."

DOWNLOAD-OF-THE-MOMENT
Speaking of free downloads - I've instituted a new feature at
summerrussell.com, and will be making a song available through the
website every week or month or so, exclusively to you folks. This
stems from the decision that I need to at least be recording everything
I write, and that I'd rather share music with my friends for free than
just wait around til I've got CDs to sell.
In the meantime, these will be mostly mp3s recorded onto a PDA in the
low-tech wonderland of my bedroom. Some will already be familiar
to many of you, but others may be unpolished pieces I've never even
performed in public. Your feedback on both is *always*
welcome. I'd love to know what works, and hear about what clicks
with you. Feeling truly reckless with my intellectual property,
I'll also be providing lyrics for those who like to know what they're
getting into before they download.
To kick it off, I've uploaded "Robin," one of my most popular and
frequently requested folky-Celtic-type tunes, slated for inclusion on
"Out Of The Greenwood." You can go to one of two places for the
download. For the sake of preserving bandwidth, I've mirrored the
file at yousendit.com, and the URL for the download there is:
Follow the link, click on the filename, and you're on your way!
If the above is not available, you can download "Robin" directly from
my website by visiting http://www.summerrussell.com/audio.html and
clicking on the "Download-Of-The-Moment." Lyrics are available
here, too.
As ever, let me know what ya think!

PHOTOSHOP MONKEYS
I announced a promotional graphics contest in the last
newsletter. Having received no responses to date, I will switch
to the simple yet effective tactic of begging. If that doesn't
work, I'll hush.
Reprinted from the November issue:
"Now that I've got a cool website, I need cool ways to get people to
visit it. Namely, promotional graphics--icons, banner ads, huge
animated flashing billboards, or anything else you can dream up as a
pretty way of linking to summerrussell.com.
If you'd like to try your hand at helping me out in this most worthy
endeavor, I'll pick my favorites and feature them on my website.
The grand prize winner will also receive one free digital download, in
the form of a full-length mp3 of their choice from the upcoming album
"Out Of The Greenwood," before it's even released (visit the "albums"
page to hear samples). It's not much, but there you have it.
(EDIT: okay, with the advent of the new feature, I realize this isn't
so spectacular. Howbout I make you a plate of cookies?)
Just writing to wish you all a Merry Christmas, and a wonderful holiday
season. It's been a fantastic year, and I'm grateful to all of
you who have helped to make it that way. Here's to the new year,
and may it be full of good things for everyone!
In celebration of the season, here's my little gift to you... if you're
not tired of Christmas music yet, that is. I recorded this for a
very dear friend of mine, but wanted to share it with all of you as
well, as a very small sort of thanks for all your kindness and
support. Go here if you'd like to listen to my version of "Silent
Night"--

Hi Everybody,
Thanks for tuning in once again to the official newsletter of, err... me. On to the news!

WEBSITE FACELIFT
http://www.summerrussell.com has been massively overhauled. Drop
by sometime to check out new audio clips, images, cool links, and a
short biography of yours truly, all bundled up in a rudimentary but
fairly well-organized package. Updates will continue regularly,
so please keep coming back to visit, bring your friends, and remember
that suggestions are always welcome.

GRAPHICS CONTEST
Hey, Photoshop monkeys!
Now that I've got a cool website, I need cool ways to get people to
Two more new mp3s are now available for free download at MySpace - "Ol Grey Dog" and "A Little More."
Eventually, I think, I'm going to run out of songs to distribute
online, long before I ever actually finish an album. But as long
as folks are hearing, and enjoying, the tunes... then they're all gonna
rush out to buy that CD the day it's released, right?
...riiiight?
Alright, that's enough of me for another season. Keep in touch
with all your questions, comments and suggestions. Thanks again!
A new mp3 is now available exclusively through my website at
http://www.summerrussell.com . The song is "Lead, Kindly Light,"
a new arrangement of an old hymn. I've always liked it, and,
feebly, I hope it might bring a little comfort to those who need it
right now.
Although I know many of you have already answered the call to help,
there is also a link to a site that offers a number of donation and
volunteer opportunities.

Howdy Folks,
Welcome to issue #2 of the Official Newsletter, published in
commemoration of the fact that I actually have enough news to merit an
issue #2.
Top news: My base of operations has changed! I've recently relocated
to Fort Worth, Texas to go to school this fall, so I'll be cutting
back on the SoCal gigs a little bit. However, album plans are still
in the works, and the wonders of the Internet continue to make me
available to all of you back home, albeit in canned form. Keep an eye
out for possible live appearances when vacation time rolls around...
If you're still here, thanks! I hope everyone is enjoying the music.
With your continued support, it can only get better from here.

ROAD TRIP - EPILOGUE
My summer road trip across America was an amazing and eye-opening
experience. Some of you might have followed part of the journey via
my online travelogue. If you're interested in reading about the
adventures I had (as well as my most recent trek from California to
Texas), that journal is now completed and available online at:

MORE MUSIC ONLINE!
Now on MySpace, it's I Killed A Bear! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the
long-awaited unveiling of perhaps the most talented, sincere and
innovative band since Spinal Tap. Although we are currently scattered
across the continent, the band has taken great pains to provide its
fans with a strong online presence until our much-anticipated Reunion
Concert next February.
http://www.myspace.com/ikilledabear
Check out two new mp3s featuring half the band--myself and
uber-rockstar Jacob Hoskinson--performing "As Lovely As Anything" and
the heartfelt "Anthem For I Killed A Bear." Be sure to check out our
awesome promotional photos while you're there, and give us an add if
you're on the site. We need all the help we can get...

APRIL 16, 2005 – TOTALLY COFFEE – THANKS EVERYBODY!
***
The show at Totally Coffee went off with nary a hitch. I even got
backup in the form of an unexpected slew of session percussionists,
free of charge.
The turnout was great, and I hope everyone in the audience had as much
fun attending as I had putting on the show. Look for future concert
dates at Totally Coffee in the coming year.
Extra special thanks to: Josh for getting the ball rolling on this
show; to Chris Takacs and Don Parrish-Bell for working their
sound-engineering magic at the gig; and to Richard Rasner and Jennifer
Moore for taking lots of awesome pictures and continuing to provide me
with promotional materials. Thanks to ALL OF YOU who showed up…you
made my night/month/year, and I look forward to playing for you again
soon.
Audio from the entire show was recorded courtesy of Chris Takacs at
Indyroom Recording, and several of the tracks are slated to be used on
a future album release.
Which brings me to…

ALBUM PROGRESS
***
My debut studio album, "Out Of The Greenwood," is currently in
pre-recording stages as we work on full-fledged arrangements. The
album, comprised of all-original tunes with a traditional folk/Celtic
flair, will feature several songs that have become favorites among my
"longtime fans." (did I really just say that?). Among the tracks
slated for inclusion are "Robin," "Stormbringer," and "Waiting For A
Hero," among many others.
In addition, plans are in the works for a more contemporary album down
the line, featuring recordings from the live show in April, as well as
several new studio recordings.
Album release dates are yet to be determined. My work in the studio
this summer will see a decided slowdown, due to my upcoming…

ROAAAAD TRIIIIIP!
***
For most of the month of May, the entirety of June, and part of July,
I'll be heading out of town. If you live somewhere on the East Coast
or in the South, you might just chance to see me playing in a seedy
bar some night: otherwise, plan on my next local gig happening
sometime in the coming fall.

WEB SITE LAUNCH
***
http://www.summerrussell.com is now online. In the future, the web
site will feature a press kit, bio, audio samples, lyrics, and more.
For now, you can go there to check out some of the awesome pics from
the last concert. In addition, you'll find further information and a
link to an online travelogue where, if you're so inclined, you can
follow my travels across the country this summer from the comfort of
your own home.

NEW FAN GROUP
***
My dear and longtime friend, Beth, has created her own fan club
site/discussion group for lil' old me. Thank you so much! For those
of you who'd like to check it out, the site can be found here:
http://groups.msn.com/SummerRussell
Beth is an amazing person, and I'm honored that she'd put forth the
effort she did to set this up. She did a great job, and as soon as I
stop blushing furiously I'll be able to thank her more properly. Love
ya, lady!

Well, that's it for now. Thanks again for your continued support, and
best wishes to every one of you. Oooh, I gotta run, Man Of La

Totally Coffee

Costa Mesa, CA 92626
Summer Russell (that's me!) - live in concert, one night only, with an
extended hour-and-a-half show.
The last show in November had an amazing turnout. This time around
we'll be recording the show in the hopes of releasing a live CD, so it
would be great to have a lot of you there to make some noise. Drop by
and enjoy the cozy atmosphere and tasty beverages, and hear a few old
favorites as well as lots of new songs.
No cover charge, just come and have a drink or two. :) Hope to see you there!

Coming soon to a coffee shop near you...
Saturday, April 16, 2005
at Totally Coffee in Costa Mesa, CA
Time: To Be Announced
The hippest coffee-slinging cats this side of the
Orange Curtain are hosting another local talent
showcase! (Yknow, like the one back in November that
so many of you helped to make a resounding success.)
The real shocker is that they've invited me back to
play again.
This time around I've got an extended (hour-and-a-half
long) set. Another great local artist, Carys, will
also be playing at TC that night. There might even be
some groovy duet-type stuff involved. It should be a
really fun night. I'd love to see you there.
More details to come!
(And maybe even a progress report on the CD
project...)
Have a great weekend everybody--
Summer
