"Star Trek" theme composer Alexander Courage dies
4 hours ago
LOS ANGELES — Alexander "Sandy" Courage, an Emmy-winning and Academy
Award-nominated arranger, orchestrator and composer who created the
otherworldly theme for the classic "Star Trek" TV show, has died. He
was 88.
Courage died May 15 at the Sunrise assisted-living facility in
Pacific Palisades, his stepdaughter Renata Pompelli of Los Angeles,
said Thursday. He had been in poor health for three years.
Over a decades-long career, Courage collaborated on dozens of movies
and orchestrated some of the greatest musicals of the 1950s and
1960s, including "My Fair Lady," "Hello, Dolly!" "Seven Brides for
Seven Brothers," "Gigi," "Porgy and Bess" and "Fiddler on the Roof."
But his most famous work is undoubtedly the "Star Trek" theme, which
he composed, arranged and conducted in a week in 1965.
"I have to confess to the world that I am not a science fiction fan,"
Courage said in an interview for the Academy of Television Arts &
Sciences Foundation's Archive of American Television in 2000. "Never
have been. I think it's just marvelous malarkey. ... So you write
some, you hope, marvelous malarkey music that goes with it."
Courage said the tune, with its ringing fanfare, eerie soprano part
and swooping orchestration, was inspired by an arrangement of the
song "Beyond the Blue Horizon" he heard as a youngster.
"Little did I know when I wrote that first A-flat for the flute that
it was going to go down in history, somehow," Courage said. "It's a
very strange feeling."
Courage said he also mouthed the "whooshing" sound heard as the
starship Enterprise zooms through the opening credits of the TV show.
"Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry later wrote lyrics to the tune,
which were never sung on the show but entitled him to half the
royalties, Courage said.
Among the many other projects Courage worked on was the 1987 TV
special "Julie Andrews: The Sound of Christmas," for which he won an
Emmy for musical direction.
He and Lionel Newman shared Academy Award nominations for their
adapted scores for 1964's "The Pleasure Seekers" and 1967's "Doctor
Dolittle."
A friend and colleague of movie composers John Williams and Jerry
Goldsmith, he also provided the orchestration for such movies as "The
Poseidon Adventure," "Jurassic Park," "Basic Instinct" and "The
Mummy" and supplied arrangements for the Boston Pops while Williams
was conductor in the 1980s and early 1990s.
For "Star Trek" he composed music for only a few episodes, in
addition to the theme and the music for the pilot. But that theme was
reprised in the TV sequel "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and in
the "Star Trek" movies.
Courage was born Dec. 10, 1919, in Philadelphia and raised in New
Jersey. After graduation from the Eastman School of Music in
Rochester, N.Y., in 1941, Courage enlisted in the Army Air Corps.
After the war, he became a composer for CBS radio shows and then
became an orchestrator and arranger at MGM.
Beginning in the 1960s he composed music for TV shows, including "The
Waltons," "Lost in Space" and "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea,"
although the only themes he created were for "Star Trek" and "Judd
For the Defense."

Hello all,
Always trying to keep abreast of what other production companies are
doing -- and sometimes falling behind -- I found that our very own
April Sadowski (who is playing Lindsey in our new show "Derrick Geist"
and will be assuming the role of Resheen D'Conn in "Star Trek: Eras"
sixth episode) was interviewed on Pendant's weekly podcast, TWIPS
(This Week In Pendant), talking about her work with them and how she
got into voice acting. Congratulations April!
If you'd like to give April's interview a listen, you can find her on
TWIP's 71st Episode at http://pendantaudio.com/twip.php#new
Before there was Vertigo, Marvel Max and Image comics, there was the
Wild Cards book series, edited by author extraordinaire George R. R.
Martin. With the release of the eighteenth book in this long-lasting
series, Doug and Jim sit and discuss the multiple lives of this title
and review the newest book: Inside Straight. Tune in and listen to
TWERPcast episode 12: CardCast.
Realizing that it's been a while since any news has come out of the TWERP offices, I figured it was time to give everyone an update on our programming and let everyone out there know that we're still hard at work. I will divide things up by our productions:
Star Trek: Eras - As many of you know, Joan Hallaron (who voices Violetta Knorre on our show, as well as being wife to Jerry and mother of Beth, Ken and Matt) had a nasty health scare back in January and February. I am very pleased to announce, though, that she is back home and making a steady recovery, much to the joy of us all. This, of course, absorbed all of Matt's concentration, followed quickly by a need to move and an impending job hunt. The reason I share all this is to explain why production on Eras has been put on hold for the past several months. As soon as things level out for Matt, he will be diving back to work and will get Act 3 of "Yours, Mines
and Ours" completed. Thanks for bearing with us.
Recording for our fourth episode "Tough Decisions" has been completed and I have been trying to make good use of my time doing the preliminary edits on the episode in preparation of handing it over to Matt for sound effects and music. This episode not only marks the debut of two new actors in lead roles, but also features Tommy Gauthier, the winner of thte auction for charity at last year's WindyCon. Doug and I have also been doing some writing on a couple more episodes, so work is still progressing on the series.
TWERPcast - Our monthly (sort of) podcast is the easiest of our shows to work on, and are therefore the ones you get the highest quantity of. Doug and I will be recording our twelfth episode later today - CardCast - and it will hopefully be released by the end of the month (knock on wood).
IMWAN 4 - Our new superhero show, created by James Taylor, is still
in post-production. Erick is hard at work on doing the sound editing, having turned in a great sounding first act. Unlike Eras, we will be holding off, however, and release the show in its entirety upon its completion. We have also brought on a new composer to take some of the strain off Matt's shoulders, and Jason Feder will be putting music to this fun episode. We'll let you know about the release date once we get a better idea of when we'll be finished.
Derrick Geist - The newest of our series, Geist is half way through recording on our first episode, with several new voices joining us for the first time. Once all of our recording is finished, I'll be diving head first into the preliminary editing, then passing it off to Justin Bills for sound effects and mixing. Jason will also (hopefully) be tackling the music for this show as well. As you can tell, we have several more steps in the process on this show, but
we're certain it will be worth the wait. The second episode is written and edited, waiting to be distributed to our actors once recording on episode one is completed, and I've started writing on episode three, so we're looking forward to this being another expansive and intriguing series.
So, as you can tell, we are still hard at work here at TWERPs, and we thank you for sticking with us and your continued patience as we work towards providing you with high quality sound entertainment.
Although it does not cover our normal gammit of subjects here, I found
it interesting enough to pass along. CBS begins broadcasting "Secret
Talents Of The Stars" on Tuesday, April 8th. George "Mr. Sulu" Takei
will show his hidden talent as a country singer (Who'd a thunk it?).
Also appearing will be former Partridge Family and Chicago DJ Danny
Bonaduce, who will be doing a unicycling act with members of Ringling
Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus, former heavyweight boxing champ Joe
Frazier and many others. Might be something to set the TiVo for.
Hopefully, he's not a singer in the Shatner & Nimoy molds.
TWERPcast is proud to present a special preview of the upcoming
Academy Awards presentation. Join Doug and Jim as they discuss their
