Hello
I have been investigating which tools to buy & have some more questions (I think
they may be a bit naive):
1. i. Heat guns - I have never used one of these - is the heat produced
sufficiently concentrated that it can be used to seat/adjust pads once they are
in their cups & back on the sax?
ii. Are most/all of you using variable temperature heat guns (there are a
lot of 2 setting ones on sale here in the UK)?
iii. I can't afford something like the Z Gun for shellac, so I will be using
stick shellac: is it easier to have a fixed heat source under a cup that you are
melting shellac into - like a Bunsen - (& can you do this with a gun - clamp it
somehow/use some king of stand)?
2. What is the melting point of shellac?
3. Filing tone holes: what kind of equipment do you use (I have seen the JS
files on Music Medic: http://www.musicmedic.com/catalog/products/js-s200.html
which look like a good product for the job, but, again, I have no experience of
using them - hence the question).
4. Once you have a level tone hole, it looks to me that using something like the
Ferrees pad slix is the easiest & fastest way to get a good tight/aligned pad
against hole fit: is this the case (I realise that there are many ways to do
this kind of work & many different situations that can arise, I am referring to
the methods outlined on: http://www.ferreestools.com/e42_sax_pad_slix.htm by
Steve & Eric)?
Thank you
Jan
