Well, I'm speechless. Can't get the smile off my face!
Green has proved to himself, and to the world, and particularly to
the rapturous crowd that rammed The Windmill tonight, that all it
takes is to get up there and play the songs. No fuss, no fanfare,
just a great little band of local musicians clearly enjoying playing
a short but sweet set of all-fresh Scritti songs.
What did it sound like? Not sure if I have the words... Strands from
all of pop history, expertly crafted, stylish, witty, bold, funny,
thoughtful, passionate, and full of gorgeous suprises. To hear it is
to want to hear a lot more of it. It's accessible, varied, coherent,
very high quality. The man's on a roll.
And for those that missed it, the great news is, there will be more -
Green told me that a second gig is already tentatively planned,
somewhere in Kilburn, north London. Sorry I don't have any more
details on that. A beaming Geoff Travis also confirmed that the new
album is finished and will appear in the next couple of months.
Don't want to stick my neck out too far, but it seems to me he's
finally on a path to gaining the sort of recognition he's always
deserved - if he wants it.
A great night, and it was great meeting some of you too. Looking
forward to seeing you again at the next one.
Steve
