Did anyone else mention the Calvin show at Mama Buzz in Oakland? He
played with Whysp (sp) that I also highly recommend. It was as usual.
  Amazing.

I am populating my new radio station, Instatone, with
the best of indie unsigned bands. i
want to extend an invitation to those on this list
that adore calvin as much as I do.
anyway thanks much for helping out.

right now I think there are 8 instatone members and half of those
are my brothers and sisters. The
first 50 new members (not including my own friends and
family) will be sent a cool T-
shirt once I print them off and make up a cool logo.
This is a total DIY skunkworks happenin project
so I am thinking this list would appreciate my efforts
more than other crowds.

Oh almost forgot, it's under special password right
now until we get the kinks out, but I'll
give it up to you guys and girls --make sure to pass onto
friends.

quiet as usual on here but just wanted to say that i finally got to read our band could be your life and it was fantastic.  the beat happening chapter was probably one of the least interesting for me simply because i had heard most of the stories in it but it still had some great stuff in it that i wasn't aware of.  Some of the other chapters were just fantastic though, all these bands i hadn't thought about in so many years and stories i hadn't heard.  anyway michael if you are still on here, fantastic book, thanks a lot.

secondly happy birthday streator!!!!!

i think that is all.

Just saw Calvin play last night in Detroit. It was fantastic of course, and
there some new (to me) songs played so I'd recommend looking to see if he's
coming your way: www.krecs.com Nice. Just make sure you show up on time...

There's a new Daniel Johnston cover album out and Calvin's got a great cover of
"Sorry Entertainer". It's actually a pretty decent record overall.

So there's some Beat Happening related news...hope all are well.

Here's hoping this doesn't make it right back to the man himself, but I was
sitting in a coffee shop in Portland, OR when Mr. Johnson happened in with
some fliers for an upcoming multi-act extravaganza with Mirah, The Blow and
himself solo (www.nocturnalpdx.com).
Well, I'd just seen him do a show a couple weeks prior and handed him a DVD
of Dub Narcotic playing Disjecta
(http://www.northwestconcerts.com/venues/disjecta.html) last summer. I said
I'd like to make the material available as a fundraiser. If he liked it,
they could duplicate it and sell it to offset medical bills or whatever. He
said they had received a lot of support already, benefit shows, etc. but
thanks anyway. Cool.
But, looking back on that footage – I followed him around for several weeks
in 2003 and taped him at Pacific Switchboard, Mississippi Pizza and Jackpot
Records. There are all sorts of interesting cameos (K celebs in the
audience) in his rambling, strolling concert. I had to follow him all over
the venues as he recalled lost classics, covered his current favorites and
made up stream-of-consciousness lyrics.
The point is: he's really different now, and it's haunting. Being face to
face with him the other day made me really sad. He's kind-of glassy-eyed and
not very lucid. He... talks... really... slow... and... labored. I think
he's hanging in there really well, but it reminds me of Spalding Gray who
did one-man shows and movie appearances and just as he turned a corner and
started doing brighter material, had a car accident which disfigured his
face. No more "Swimming to Cambodia" or "Killing Fields" or "Monster in a
Box." He tried to return to the stage, but his speech was so altered, he
would break down in mid-performance.
He was found in the East River three months after reported missing by his
family.
So, I don't think that's how Calvin's going to go, but he looks like he's
either in some pain or is inwardly frustrated or straining to put his
thoughts together. Scary but inspiring.

Well there's that Lee Hazelwood tribute album that Calvin's on, and that's
Astralwerks. And do Matador or Sub Pop count as majors?

I can't think of any other Beat Happening tracks on a major, though. That's
interesting.

There's a Beat Happening track on a Rhino compilation? Interesting! Does
anybody out there know if this is the first time Beat Happening music -- or
anything by Calvin Johnson -- has been distributed through a major label?
Rhino, of course, is part of the Warners Music Group.

See, I think "Our Secret" is a perfect choice. That song is so catchy and
addictive! I haven't heard the record in a while, but I still find myself
singing it from time to time when I'm making lunch, watering plants, or
whatever. It has a way of creeping around on the back of one's brain.

But at the same time, songs like "Hot Chocolate Boy" or "Look Around" would also
be good in the same way. I just think it's exciting their on that box! Thanks
for the info.

That new Faces boxset that came out on Rhino this past Tuesday...WOW. What a
great label.

I'm thrilled that Beat Happening are represented.

But while the choice of "Our Secret" may make
sense in that it's kinda their "Radio Free Europe"
(in that it was influential and it was their first 45),
but I don't think it's nearly their best song.

Having already been a fan of the band for a while
when I first heard it, I remember finding Calvin's
off-key vox and the repetitve simplicity of the music
fun/amusing/refreshing/engaging/charming, but I
imagine most first-time-listeners/non-converts will
be lunging for the *skip* button, whereas the
inclusion of, oh off the top of my head, let's say
Indian Summer, I Let Him Get to Me, Foggy Eyes,
That Girl, Crashing Through, Look Around, Cast
a Shadow, Hangman, or Hot Chocolate Boy would
be more likely encourage further investigation from
novices.

I put my finger on this while talking to a friend. It's kinda like awkwardness
for the sake of being awkward whereas Beat Happening's charm was a result of
their sincerity. So yeah, that's obvious but it's relevant, and I wanted to put
it in words.

Not to say there aren't a lot of amazing bands around right now, au contraire.

part of what i like about the crabs(pre-sarah dougher), was the bh like simplicity of their songs. i think most people are too concerned about musicianship now to let themselves go back to the kind of sound that bh had. that old 'so what if we don't really know what chords we're playing or if they are chords or if people think my voice is shite' needs to come back. of course, i say that as a complete hypocrite. i can't believe i forgot mazerrad in my last e-mail. i'm so loving that you're on vh1 and mtv2 so much lately. my best friend(besides scot), jessie, is usually here when you come on and i always yell 'mazerrad' really loud. sometimes, she's just like 'yes, i know it's mazerrad', but she's usually a really good sport. hey streator, did i miss the kids' soccer season again this year? see, this is why i don't post-because i have no idea of what music is happening right now and i really only care about how y'all are doing. music wise though, nobody said if they love the blow or not. i actually just really want to talk about the simple life 2 and maybe a little america's top model, and then amazing race and big brother are starting soon so watch out. i'll try to keep quiet. thanks boys for answering back and not making me feel like a dink. 'that's hot.' take care y'all.

Jon's point is well taken. People can imitate Beat Happening all they want
but that's entirely missing the point of the band (or at least one of the many
points of the band). James Carville famously said about the 1992 presidential
election, "It's the economy, stupid." And you could also say that about Beat
Happening -- part of the appeal of what they were doing was the economy of it.
But even more importantly, you could also say, "It's the *songs*, stupid."
Those are really good songs -- and they'd be good no matter who played them.
Even if Michael Bolton played them they'd be good... errr... I think.
     Happy summer, everybody.

I just want you to know, Ms. Alyssa Marie, that minutes ago I was fuming over a
really snotty e-mail from another mailing list I'm on and your little shout out
put me back on track. So thank you. Of course you're missed too.

So I was thinking quite a bit about Beat Happening this weekend. I heard them
for the first time in a while while I was driving down to Southern Indiana, and
they're a really amazing band. It's amazing how many current musicians are
influenced by BH yet don't quite have what I see in this band. Like they have
the childlike innocence but aren't nearly as sharp, or have the wimpy music but
lack the melodies, etc. So yeah, I'm a new Beat Happening fan all over again.

Hope all are well. Glad to hear DNSS are healing, and glad to see there are
more than bots posting.

hi jonathan and everyone else(if there's anyone still left). i've really been missing this list. i don't need to enlarge my penis and i've never had enough money to be in debt so it hasn't been interesting for a while now. as for dnss, heather was always ok, i hear chris is doing fine, and i saw calvin last week and he seems to be doing really well-looks fabulous. he's been playing solo shows, but no dnss. my birthday was last sunday and scot forgot it for the first time in years, but you better remember to go see the microphones on july 10th. i also have no idea what you were talking about a while ago when you said that i was the go to girl for go team stuff. mittens(jon), i miss you. does everyone love the blow? have y'all seen mirah just all over the damn magazines, ok, well venus and bust right now, but at the same time-maybe jane too. that would be mighty hip of them. so yea, not very good at starting conversations... um, it looks like i'm going to record some songs with some friends very soon. excitement there. oh, my new other half of the duplex mate was on calvin's dorm floor at evergreen. he told me that when he first met calvin he told him that he was going to be known around the world. i told him that he indeed is. he also works with our own list member, courtney(my neighbor, not calvin, but you probably figured that out on your own). it's a small town after all. do we still have the two french people on the list? i really need some of those chanel postage stamps. ok, so there are some questions. send some answers and start talking. and listen to mirah, 'it's the right thing to do and a tasty way to do it'-wilford brimley for quaker oats. listen to mirah a lot. you should also support nervous nurses items that you can buy at buyolympia.com. have a lovely day. it's too damn hot in this town and scot, i don't want to hear about how cold it is there and send shahera and your mom my love. take care.

Howdy all,
It's been a long time since I've posted--and thanks to spammers, I see the
newsgroup
from time to time, but without any BH or DNSS content. Anyway, how did the DNSS
members' recovery go, and do they currently play?
Myself, I'm back in Japan--from where, incidentally, I put together the first BH
compilation CD "Our Secret" back when the newsgroup was hosted by the australian
server, and called Jamboree. Remember that?
Hope all you BH fans are happy and doing well.
Jonathan

At this point what choice do I have? There are
several projects that I am supposed to be working on
right now. Is it laziness, bordem or the constant
artificial light that blocks me from being a
productive person?

People are constantly coming into my office sharing
their useless analogies. It really makes me want to
stab a rusty fork into my eye sockets. I try to listen
politely, but I am really just craving the enforced
naptime of preschool. I don't know why, but I need
someone to tell me that it is time to put my head down
and go to sleep.

I would like to go see some of those shows, but I live
very very far from long beach CA.

CUB! i thought it was they who coined the phrase cuddle-core but i could be
wrong. betti-cola is still one of my favourite albums of all times.
yee-haw.

speaking of go-team (which you were i just deleted it). i'm still going to
try and compile all that stuff onto a few cd's. i've gotten part of the way
there. i just need 6 more of those damn singles. maybe i'll call alyssa
today and hassle her to make me a tape in exchange for this strawberry story
7" i keep promising to send her.

but at the rate i work it'll probably be a few years yet before it happens.
good news is the cd i promised streator in return for that go-team stuff is
almost ready. it just need mastering :)

I'm wayyy too busy to make tapes for people, but I have a Go Team "best-of"
CD that my friend Chris made from the singles and cassettes. I could send
that to people as long they kick in a blank CD and a self-addressed stamped
envelope.
