A few weeks ago I comment to the list owner that perhaps the list
should be moderated so that spam is not posted and offered to assist.
Mary wrote back saying that she is quite busy with work recently and
offered me ownership of this group. I accepted. (Is this "All right,
wise guy, see if you can do better?")
I have deleted some spam and some spammers, set the group so that new
members require approval, and new members are moderated. I will
demoderate new members when they post a message.
Hi Chicago Singers,
I've got a lot of email addresses of people who came to the Midwest
Convention from far away, and I'd like to sign them up to receive
email announcements of only the special events that people generally
travel to from out of town: Midwest Convention, Anniversary singing,
Hyde Park Anniversary singing, and Lincoln's Birthday singing (at the
U of C Folk Fest). The U of C list configuration software doesn't have
the "special announcements only" option that yahoo groups has, so I'd
like to use this list for that. I hope y'all don't mind. But I will
need help from the group moderator (Mary Doyle) because I think
special announcements can come only from the moderator. Mary, would
you be willing to post these four announcements per year? You can copy
them from the other list. Or if anyone's got a better idea, please let
me know. Thanks.
Rochelle
Here is the schedule of upcoming singings on the north side. Please note: all locations are Chicago with the exception of mine (1109 Washington), which is in Evanston. Looking forward to singing with you soon!

If it's the Anniversary Singing you're talking about, it's on Sunday,
not Saturday.

Yes! You certaintly can bring a dish to share. It'll be quite the feast, and all contributions from local singers are appreciated, as many will be coming from out of town. And all are encouraged to join in the singing, regardless of experience level. That said, sitting in back and taking it in silently is perfectly fine too.
Sounds great! My wife and I would love to attend, is there anything we should know going in? (we just got interested in this type of music, so we're pretty new!) I see the singers are asked to bring something, how about us? (not a problem if so!) Is there a site or something I can visit to
learn more? Thanks for being so welcoming by the way! dredtulc(who loves the IAHC!)

Do you know about the anniversary singing coming up? Here's the scoop...
22nd Session of the Chicago Sacred Harp Singers Anniversary Singing, 8 January 2006, 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., potluck dinner on the grounds at 12:30 p.m. (local singers please bring a main dish, salad, or dessert etc. to share), at the Irish American Heritage Center, 4626 N. Come if you can, as it's a once a year event and one of the most well attended of SH singings in Chicago. I anticipate we will recommence with regular northside singings in late
January.
Will there be extra books available? I do not have one yet but am interested in attending.....

To anyone who would like a
chance to sing this week -
There *will* be a north side singing this Sunday, the 27th. It will be held at my house, in Ravenswood: 1766 W. Highland (one block S. of Devon & just east of Ravenswood & the Metra tracks). 2 o'clock, come on down! Please note that this is a change of venue for the singing formerly scheduled for the Evanston location.
Our number is (773) 274-4551.
There will *not* be a singing in Hyde Park this week, due to the holiday (just a reminder).
Have a great Thanksgiving, and I hope to see and hear you (and your in-laws?) on Sunday.

We can plan for a singing tomorrow from 2-4 even though I haven't actually heard from anyone saying they are coming. Our address is 4868 N. Hermitage (that is in the first block north of Lawrence). The house is at the back of the lot. Hermitage is the second street west of Ashland and one way going north. I have some ginger bread.
Were there enough people able to come that we are going ahead with a singing tomorrow at my house, 2-4? I lost track of how many said they could come and also what is considered a minimum. Randy and I will be here if we have it (that's 2). Also I will post our address if it's happening.

My point was that it might be helpful to address the discussion you're
having on this list - about where to sing, if there's interest enough
to hold singings, how to publicize singings to get more people
involved etc. - to the Chicago singing community at large, most of
which (at least based on the subscription numbers) does not see what
is posted to this Yahoo group. As for the links from Fasola, given
that I created and maintain one of the two Chicago area singings
websites, I'm aware the information is out there - I just imagine that
it would be seen by even more people if it were also posted to the
Fasola singings list itself and delivered to people's inboxes.
I'm not suggesting the discussion about hammering out dates and
locations should be posted to the Fasola singings list - however,
information about many local monthly singings from around the country
is regularly posted there, and it just seemed to me that if you're
looking for ways to expand advertising about your singings, using the
resources that have already been set up would be a good way to go.

I'm kind of busy on the 20th, but might be able to attend, depending on where Susan and Randy's house is (as long as travel isn't too long I would love to be able to take the time to sing!). Again, I'm public transportation dependent for the most part.
I will most certainly be available to sing on the 27th, but not the 11th.
As far as increasing attendance, it might be good for several people to speak with those who were initially interested who have not yet attended and find out what their obstacles to attending have been. If it's just that it's currently the holiday season, then we should be able to keep a north side sing viable. There may be more scheduling, communication, transportation or other concerns that people might be more likely to discuss in person or in one-to-one situations.
Also, it is always hard to begin a new group - but once it gets going it should be smooth sailing.

Miss Mary, rest assured I intend to join you in putting in energy,

and Marta that advertising to the general public may not be the best
route this early in the game. I would prefer to try to build a larger

rhythm going first.

I do think it's good to keep this list of actively interested singers going, especially for purposes of working out locations.
If you (Mary) or others are still into the flyers/ newsletters concept, let me know.
It was
wonderful singing with many of you yesterday at Old Town. I'm
sure the Wisconsin singing was well worth the drive and I'm
sorry to have missed it. Here is an update and query
regarding northside singing for the rest of the autumn
season:
Attendance of
Northside singings has beed slight in recent weeks. It's hardly
worth it to continue schedualing northside singings if only 3 people
show up. Here's what we have thus far in terms of projected
attandance for Nov and Dec:
11/20 - 4
11/27 - 2-3
12/11 - 3-4
12/18 - no Evanston singing.....all city singing - location TBA
As
the unofficial organizer of northside singings, I vote we figure out
another way to increase attandance, like...say...creating and
distributing flyers and posting announcements in
newletters. As a single parent with a 9-5 job
and only a bit of knowledge of sacred harp history
and tradition, my ability to promote and coordinate northside
singings on my own is rather limited. I need help.
Please volunteer to help with or take charge of either of the
following duties if you are able and willing:
Trumpet
Blower....create and distribute flyers, ask churches/libraries/music
schools to post an announcement in thier newsletters, etc.
Super Schedualer....coordinate dates, times and locations of northside singings and post to group.

I offer this suggestion as someone who lives in the NW suburbs and
isn't usually able or likely to attend shorter singings in the city,
but it seems to me that trying to organize singings in the Chicago
area by means of a separate Yahoo group is perhaps a
less than optimal way of doing it. I realize that in setting this up
you were anxious to avoid "overloading" the existing local mailing
list (hosted through the University of Chicago), but that list has
relatively little traffic, and, as opposed to the 24 members of this
list, at last count it had 346 subscribers, all of whom are presumably
interested in the topic of singings in the Chicago area. In addition
to that list, there's the Fasola singings list at http://fasola.org,
where people all over the country and the world, who might be
traveling to the Chicago area, who knows, could receive announcements
of your singings. It seems to me it would be practical to try to
organize singings using those two lists, if not in place of this Yahoo
group, than at least in addition to it.
I've posted links to the websites that host the two mailing lists I've
mentioned under the "Links" section of this Yahoo group.
Best regards,
Karen Freund

I'm really sorry, but November 27 is probably the absolutely worse day for me to host. I'll have the CD release concert coming up in two days and be deeply embroiled in that. Plus we'll have family visiting including a baby who is either making a lot of noise or trying to sleep.
I'd love to host in December when the craziness is behind me.

Hello dear Singers,
It was such a delight to sing with many of you in Hyde Park last weekend! We've got another weekend full of singing in Chicago coming up, so let's call this Sunday's singing (2nd sunday) officially canceled. I look forward to seeing many of you in Wisconsin on Saturday or at Old Town on Sunday.
Question: If a 3rd Sunday in Nov. singing is schedualed, would you be able to attend? Attendance has been low, so if you want a singing, please confirm that you can make it. If six or more people confirm, we'll sing.
The 4th Sunday is Thanksgiving weekend - again, same question. I might be out of town, so someone else would have to host if folks want to sing that weekend.
The Quaker House looks like a no go, they have lot's of liability concerns. How has this been handled with other churches?
We need more living rooms! If you've got one that would work, please volunteer it!
And so, dear singers, in summery, please give a "YES, I'll be there!" or a "I hope I can make it, but I'm not sure yet" or a "Nope, that time won't work for me" to each of the following November and December dates so we might schedual accordingly. Also, if you can host, please include the best day for you to do so here.
