Happy New Year Everyone!

Hope you enjoyed the last bit of holidays and are adjusting back to
the realities of life. I have a few things for you today:

1. Here is a reminder about our upcoming show this Sat. Jan. 10th.
We're very excited to have Sammy Naquin and the Zydeco Whips along
with Al Berard heading to Ossining (7 Old Albany Post Road). We'll
have a dance lesson at 7pm and music from 8-11:30pm. $20

Since the Re-gifting Auction was such a success in December, we will
have another one this Sat. Here is how it works--

Do you have any gifts that just don't know what to do with? Rather
than sticking them in a closet or under the bed, why not donate them
to Somebody Scream NY for a Re-gifting Auction? Here is how this
works: dance patrons bring in unwanted but perfectly good gifts. These
beautiful items will be displayed on the pool table of the Eagles Hall
and each gift will have a cup next to it. If a certain item meets your
fancy you place a raffle ticket in the cup next to the item (maybe
several raffle tickets if you really like the item). At the music
break one raffle ticket will be pulled from each cup to determine the
winner of each gift. (Hint: Since not everyone is in for the same
prizes, your odds are better to win.)

So….if you want to donate a re-gift (unwrapped), bring it this Sat.
Jan. 10th. As always, proceeds from the raffles go to support the
dances (dinner for the band, money for a "snowy" night and other
unforeseen expenses). Your generous and supportive donations are
always appreciated!

Here is a little more about Saturday's performers:

Sammy Naquin, raised in Houma LA , has played accordion professionally
since age 13. His musical life experience, from the Bayous of South
Louisiana to over 20 years entertaining people on Bourbon street has
resulted in a unique compelling sound. While Sammy grew up on and
mastered traditional Cajun music, his Bourbon Street years opened him
up to the energy and feel of Zydeco leading to the creation Sammy
Naquin and the Zydeco Whips. With his recent collaboration with Al
Berard you get the best of both worlds.

Al Berard - Al began playing the guitar at the age of 11. Right out of
high school, he played lead guitar in a rock band called ReFlx. In
1983, helped formed another group, The Basin Brothers Band, performing
mostly country and pop...In 1989 the bands sound changed to
traditional and original Cajun French music playing festivals, clubs,
and workshops at numerous locations in the United States and in other
countries including Canada, France, and Ireland.... striving to
promote and preserve the Cajun culture and music.

Over the years, Sammy and Al Berard have shared musical respect and
admiration. They have decided to actively collaborate and see where it
takes them musically.

2. For those of you who know Jonno Frishberg (formerly in
Charivari--They played Ossining on several occasions), we'd like to
let you know that Jonno's wife is seriously ill and there will be a
benefit in Louisiana this weekend. Here are the details for The
Frishberg Family Benefit
Sunday, January 11, 2009
Blue Moon Saloon, 215 E Convent St, Lafayette, LA 70501 12:00PM to 10:45PM
There will also be a silent auction and gumbo.
People who cannot attend may send donations to Jonno and Maria at
their home address, 4468 Arts St. New Orleans, La. 70122. Donations
should be made out to Maria Lovullo. Info: (337) 234-2422

3. Get your discount!! This just in from the Paramount Center for
the Arts in Peekskill-- Marcia Ball & BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet
will celebrate Mardi Gras at the Paramount (1008 Brown Street
Peekskill, NY 10566) on Sat. Feb. 28th. The folks at Paramount has
generously offered the Somebody Scream - NY community a 10% discount
on all tickets. Be sure to mention Somebody Scream - NY to get your
discount.

4. Mark your calendar for future Somebody Scream - NY shows: We just
added 3 new shows and are now working on our June show!!

Hi Everyone,

I know the forecast doesn't look great but the band will be here by
tonight and we will make every effort to have the dance tomorrow night
(Sat. Jan. 10th) with Sammy Naquin and the Zydeco Whips along with Al
Berard.

Please feel free to call 914-960-9057 to check the status of the show.
I will post a message through e-mail should there be a cancellation.

Hi Everyone,

First I want to thank the 26 dedicated members of the c/z community
who attended our dance on Saturday night during the storm. As we
drove to the show and the snow got heavier, I envisioned a great band
playing to an empty hall. Earlier in the day when I asked the band if
they wanted to cancel, Sammy said, "Oh no, we want to play!" I was so
pleasantly surprised as people came in from Brooklyn, Tarrytown, NYC
and even NJ and Boston. The generosity of those 26 people astounded
me as well. Jackie brought a big pot of Gumbo and others bought pizza
and snacks to share!! In addition, some Eagles Hall members paid
admission (when they didn't have to) and others paid more than the
standard admission and bought extra raffle tickets to help support the
band. The bonus came for me personally when Jeremy walked in the door
after being stranded in Chicago all day. It was a truly heartwarming
evening. Thanks.

OK, on to our next event. If you missed last weekend, your chance to
see some C/Z music in January is still alive. This Saturday, Jan.
17th we have Brad Randell and the Zydeco Ballers rockin' the Eagles
Hall. We'll have a dance lesson at 7pm and music from 8-11:30.
Admission is $20. We also didn't do the re-gifting raffle last Sat.
so bring your re-gifting items this Sat. If you need details about
the re-gifting raffle, send me an e-mail or call 914-960-9057.

Here's the info on the band:
Brad Randell is a young Opelousas Zydeco accordionist who has been
busy playing music with his band the Zydeco Ballers ever since he
graduated from high school in 1997. His first recording, Move That
Thang, was released by Bad Weather Records in July 1998. A couple of
months later, Randell performed at the 16th annual Original Southwest
Louisiana Zydeco Festival in Plaisance. Randell and his band play
nouveau zydeco with a sound that explores territory mapped out by
Keith Frank and others, but Randell also manages to make his own
pathway with his original songs.

Please spread the word and invite friends, co-workers and neighbors to
join us this Sat. As always, you are our best form of advertising.

Take care and I hope to see many of you out this Sat.night!

Thanks to everyone who came to the Brad Randell show last night. They
had folks dancing all night long!

This next item came from Bob Gottfried.:

the Eagles Hall in Ossining (7 Old Albany Post Road).

Here's a little info on our friend Jesse:

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick reminder about our Mardi Gras Party on Sunday, Feb. 22nd
at the Eagles Hall (7 Old Albany Post Road, Ossining, NY) with Andre
Thierry and Zydeco Magic. All the details are falling into place.
Jeremy and I just made a batch of Jambalaya that will be for sale
tomorrow evening ($5/bowl) and the bar has stocked the ingredients for
Hurricanes. Come early and have a bowl of Jambalya and a Hurricane!
Along with our usual raffle, we will also have lots of beads,
balloons, decorations, a dance contest and a costume contest!!
Winners will receive free admission to a future Somebody Scream NY
dance! Dance lesson at 5 pm, music from 6-9:30 pm, $20

Here's a little more about the band:
Over the past years Andre Thierry & Zydeco Magic have been capturing
the attention of music lovers and dancers worldwide. Andre Thierry
released the first CD "It's About Time!" in 1999. Thierry has raised
the bar for Zydeco-Cajun musicians nationwide. Thierry has been
labeled as the Jimmy Hendrix of Zydeco Music, a legend before his
time. Andre is an exceptional multidimensional self taught musician
who has embraced his ability to merge traditional Zydeco-Cajun music
with hip-hop, blues, jazz and rock. As quoted from an article
published in Eh Toi magazine 2002, "There is no accordian player in
Zydeco that uses his left hand as well as Andre Thierry." Andre
Thierry released his second CD "A Whole Lot of something" in 2004.
Andre Thierry & Zydeco Magic will capture your attention with his
melodic fingers as they embrace the brass buttons of his accordions,
creating music that will captivate your souls, soothe your minds and
have your feet dancing all night long. As Clifton said once, that if
you have arthritis you won't have it no more. Andre Thierry & Zydeco
Magic have been playing everywhere from the East Bay Area of
California, to the Bayous of Louisiana, to the beach shores of
Florida, to the Clouds over Washington and to the Cruises on the Sea.
We are honored to host him for his first show at the Somebody Scream
Dance Series for over 6 years.

Hope to see you there!

Hi Everyone,

Hope you are enjoying the longer days and slightly warmer weather! I know I'm
ready for spring! Please join us for a great evening of zydeco music with River
City Slim and the Zydeco Hogs on Sat. March 14th in Ossining (Eagles Hall at 7
Old Albany Post Road). We'll have a dance lesson at 7pm and music from
8-11:30pm ($20). We're trying to round up some corned beef and cabbage to sell
and I'll send out another post if that comes together.

Here's a little more about the band:

Bandleader River City Slim is a lifelong Blues fan, musician and DJ. Slim was
already a Texas/Louisiana Blues and R&B fiend when he was bitten by the Zydeco
bug at a performance by Terence Simien. The Zydeco Hogs reflect Slim's deep
background in Gulf Coast music -- he's played behind a slew of Louisiana and
Texas luminaries, including Willis Prudhomme, Corey Ledet, Jeffrey Broussard,
Dexter Ardoin, D.L. Menard and others. River City Slim & The Zydeco Hogs first
came together in the cold New England winter of '98 - '99. The Hogs made a big
splash at the eighth annual Folk Next Door concert at the University of Hartford
in May of '99, and haven't looked back since. The band has made appearances at
music festivals up and down the East Coast, including a performance at the 9th
Annual Cajun/Zydeco Crawfish Festival in Fort Lauderdale, FL in 2001. Other
major festivals The Hogs have been featured at include Musikfest in Bethehem PA,
the Great Blue Heron Fest in Sherman NY, and Rhythm & Roots in Charlestown RI.
The leanest, meanest Zydeco machine in the Northeast is now poised for the next
step -- coming to your town to rock the party!

Don't forget to mark you calendars for our future events--we have two a month
through May! Thanks to all those who have invited friends and offered to post a
flier or two at your local haunts. If you need a new one, I can send you a PDF
or pick up a few extras this Sat. Even posting one or two fliers helps. We
need to keep growing the community to fill the hall each dance so we can
continue our full schedule--not to mention meet new fun people!

Sunday, Mar. 22, 2009 - Dwight "Black Cat" Carrier and the Zydeco Ro Doggs
Saturday, Apr. 4, 2009 - Corey "Lil Pop" Ledet
Saturday, April 25, 2009 - Li'l Anne and Hot Cayenne
Saturday, May 9, 2009 - Leroy Thomas and Zydeco Roadrunners
Sunday, May 17, 2009 - Preston Frank and Jim Miller

Last but not least, if you are looking for something to do Friday evening, the
Eagles Hall has an acoustic Happy Hour with Bryan Gordon, a local musician and
brother at the Eagles Hall. Happy Hour is from 6-9pm and it's FREE for
everyone!

Take care,
Laura

a nephew of Roy Carrier and a cousins to Troy "Dikki Du" Carrier and Chubby
Carrier. Dwight "Black Cat" Carrier, popularly known as Big D is becoming one of
the most exciting accordionist of this era. Coming from a tradition where music
was a past time for family entertainment and holidays, Dwight embodies both
tradition and a unique style that infuses his blues and r&b influences.

This is from our good friend Lois Lefkowitz, whose mom recently passed away in

From Lois:
"Bebe's Cats Need Your Help
On March 10 my mom, Bebe passed away. Bebe bravely fought cancer 4 times over
the past 15 years, all the while maintaining her well known sense of humor. My
mom, proprietor of Sew What's New fabric store in Nyack, NY loved animals,
rescuing many in her lifetime. At the time of her death, Bebe share her home
with six senior but healthy cats. These poor, sweet cats are now in need of
loving foster or adoptive homes to spend their golden years. If you are
interested in learning more about one or more of these cats or can help in any
way, please contact LoisLHT@... or call 703 749 7949.

Hi Everyone,

We're happy to welcome Lil' Anne and Hot Cayenne back to Ossining this
weekend!!! Li'l Anne and Hot Cayenne are one of the northeast's most popular
zydeco acts. The band frequently headlines major dance events and is often
featured on the bill of several regional music festivals. There are many reasons
for their popularity, which is also beginning to extend across the country as a
result of their invitations to perform at some of the more popular Zydeco venues
in Louisiana and to work with such Zydeco notables as Roy Carrier and Sean
Ardoin. Their live performances are both exciting and hard driving, and they
can be counted on to get their entire audience up on the dance floor. As usual
the event is at the Eagles Hall at 7 Old Albany Post Road, Ossining, NY. We'll
have a dance lesson at 7pm and music from 8-11:30 pm, $20. Please help spread
the word and invite a friend or two!

In May we have two great shows planned--May 9th we'll have Leroy Thomas and the
Zydeco Roadrunners and on May 17th Preston Frank and Big Daddy Zydeco will
entertain us! More on those shows to come. On a sad note, the July 19th show
with the Pine Leaf Boys has been canceled due to a schedule conflict. We'll
work on getting them back next season.

As many of you know festival season is almost upon us. Stay tuned for my
festival e-mail that highlights the cajun and zydeco festivals this spring and
summer. If you want to the get scoop early, you can go to Arn Burkhoff's
schedule website http://www.arnb.org/Schedule.php

Take care and I hope to see many of you out this weekend for Li'l Anne and Hot
Cayenne!

Hi again,

Can't believe I forgot to list my favorite summertime C/Z experience in
August--Buffalo Jambalaya!!! It will be held in Darlington, MD Aug. 6-9th this
year. Here is a little bit about the long weekend:

Buffalo Jambalaya 2009 -The BEST in Cajun/Zydeco music and dance!

Buffalo Jambalaya Ingredients:

• Three great bands a day, for four days! - This year's bands are Feufollet,
Cedric Watson & Bijou Creole, and Andre Thierry And Zydeco Magic. Each band
will play a full set on each of the four days.

• Cajun & Zydeco dance lessons for all levels - basic skills, beginning and
advanced dance lessons for both Cajun and Zydeco will be held.

• Musical instrument workshops led by our guest artists - These are not formal
lessons, but a chance to ask the band members questions and learn from them. You
must provide your own instrument.

• Craft artists helping you create Louisiana-style folk art - Leslie and
Nadine's class was a big hit last year. Click here for some photos and more
details.

• Cajun/Creole culture corner - Sit down in a small circle and ask questions,
hear stories and learn a little as artists share their culture and lives.

• Midnight jam sessions led by one of the bands - Everybody is welcome to bring
an instrument and join in or you can just relax and listen or get up and dance.
It goes as long as you stay!

• Scrumptious Cajun cooking - We bring in a great Louisiana chef for a wide and
varied Cajun menu.

• Hiking, volleyball, basketball, tennis or lazing in the sun at the pool -
There's always lots to do, including nothing.

Pour all the ingredients together into Camp Ramblewood, mix thoroughly, add your
own alcohol and it makes a great Buffalo Jambalaya!

OK, now I'll really leave you to enjoy your spring and summer events.

Take care,
Laura
