message: We got an e-mail saying something about an extended deadline for the cd sampler for members - I think it was June 5th. If we join now, can we submit between now and that deadline at the member rate - also, can we still apply for the scholarship?  Thanks for your help - Lauren

Updated message for all - Songsalive! members have now till 5 june (postmarked) to send in application. You need to be a member for 2 months to take advantage of the Cd sampler discount. It would not be fair to the current members if you simply joined now and took the member rate. Cannot do! sorry! However, if you want to get on the sampler, member or non- and you are having difficulty in getting your package to us today (postmarked) then we are happy to receive until the 5th (enotes subscribers only). Gilli go http://www.songsalive.org go SAMPLERS for application and information.

Arizona Music Club and 2BAW Entertainment Announce Music Seminar "How
Can I Be Down"

TARZANA, CA, May 27, 2003 – 2BAW Entertainment in association with
the Arizona Music Club (http://www.arizonamusicclub.com) announce
that their next seminar will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2003 at
the Sheraton Crescent Hotel, Phoenix, Arizona. The seminar begins at
2 p.m. and ends at 8 p.m.

This year's theme is How Can I Be Down. 2BAW Entertainment Music
Industry Seminars are designed to create a forum for unsigned artists
to interact with major record label executives. Most unsigned
artists, without this type of seminar, could never hope to shop their
demo with these decision-making professionals. "Based on comments
from artists throughout the United States, we realized musicians,
artists and band members had an interest in learning about all
aspects of the music business in addition to having the opportunity
to have their demos heard by major and independent record label A&R
executives," said Marina Hall, seminar committee chair. "In response
to those suggestions, we felt that a seminar focused primarily on
getting record deals for unsigned artists was overdue," said Hall.

The panel includes prominent music business professionals. A few of
the executives scheduled to appear are: Efactor (Bungalo/Universal
Records), Travis Baird (Beverly Hills, CA Entertainment Attorney),
Bryan Farrish (Farrish Radio Promotions), Maani Edwards (Universal
Publishing), James Leach (SESAC) Sahirah Ugdah (Tonos.com). Some of
the record labels artists will have the opportunity to shop their
demo to include: Epic, Warner Chappell, Def Jam, Columbia Records,
Jive Records, Bad Boy Records, Hidden Beach, Elektra, Interscope, A&M
Records, Bungalo Records, Shady Records, Priority Records and many,
many others. A&R Executives are looking for R&B, Urban, Pop, Metal,
Hip-Hop, Rap, Rock, Gospel & Jazz , artists, songwriters, musicians,
composers and producers.

Black Dog Promotions and Arizona Music Club have committed to
sponsoring the 2BAW Entertainment Music Seminar. Black Dog Promotions
is an international music promotion and management firm that provides
radio promotion, street team development, online promotion and
management services to record labels, independent musicians and music
events internationally.

The company operates GreatMusicSites.com, Arizona Music Club.com,
MusicMarketer.com and Musiciansbookstore.com. Details on the
company's services can be found at
http://www.blackdogpromotions.com

The seminar will be held at Sheraton Crescent Hotel, 2620 W. Dunlap,
Phoenix. The registration fee of $150 includes seminar materials,
panel discussion, and an opportunity to shop your demo to A&R record
label executives. The A&R executives will have CD players to listen
to unsigned artist CDs on the spot. To register, go to
www.2bawentertainment.com, call the seminar hotline at 310-226-8441
or contact us at info@..., or (818) 708-3774.

When I first started sending out press packets and CDs, I bought them in small quantities:  8 pack of self-sealing bubble envelopes 10x16 at Staples for $8.49 and single CD mailer boxes at Mailboxes Etc. for $1.99 each.  I knew there had to be cheaper sources online but the large quantities and potential shipping costs intimidated me.

I found a local (Los Angeles) source that's not just a little cheaper, they're way way cheaper--you can pick it up and save the shipping.  And even if you're not local, the price break is incredible.  I got 100 of the bubble envelopes (same Jiffy brand and everything) for $32--1/3 of the price I would have paid buying in small quantities at Staples--and the self-closing CD mailing boxes for $27 for 100--that's 27 cents a piece instead of $1.99.  If you want the kind that kind adjust to hold up to 4 CDs and don't mind having to tape the thing together, you only pay 1 cent more apiece.

Okay, so some of you know this already and think I'm an idiot for paying so much, but hey, in case you didn't know this already, the source is Paper Mart.  They're at www.papermart.com on the web and in East Los Angeles off the 5 Freeway if you're in L.A.

CLUB DIY PANEL, PERFORMANCES THIS THURSDAY!

LOS ANGELES (June 2, 2003) _ The DIY Convention: Do It
Yourself in Film, Music & Books has set the third
edition of a series spotlighting top works from its DIY
Film Festival and DIY Music Festival.

On Thursday, June 5th, the new CLUB DIY will present an
evening of live music, a film screening, and a panel
discussion at the Derby nightclub in Hollywood, located
at 4500 Los Feliz Blvd. CLUB DIY is held on the first
Thursday of each month at the Derby and will announce a
schedule of dates in other cities shortly.

Admission to Club DIY is free to DIY Music Festival,
DIY Film Festival and DIY Book Festival participants,
or to DIYReporter.com subscribers. Admission for the
general public is $8 before 9 p.m.

Paid admissions who pre-register by phone
(323-665-8068) with a credit card before June 4th will
receive a free transcript of last month's panel,
"Independent Music in Film & Television."

The Club DIY topic on June 5th will be "Music
Publishing - Your Questions Will Be Answered!" The
panel discussion will be moderated by DIY Convention
chairman Bruce Haring and will feature Jon Rosner, VP
of Bicycle Music Publishing; Kyle Staggs, director of
legal affairs for Bug Music Publishing; Bobby Borg,
former drummer of Warrant and now author of "The
Musician's Handbook," published by Billboard Books in
May; Jake Wisely of EMI Music Publishing; and Justin
Golberg, CEO of Label Services Network and a former
senior director of talent acquisition at Sony/ATV Music
Publishing.

The discussion will focus on simple explanations of the
often-complex world of music publishing, including
practical advice on how to get your songs to the people
that count and the various ways to make money from the
process. Filmmakers, musicians, publishers, record
labels and those interested in music supervision are
strongly urged to attend. The panel will commence at 8
p.m. on that evening, preceded by a networking cocktail
party at 7 p.m.

Live music performances will follow the panel. Featured
will be At Last, a hip-hop acapella group; the solo
piano stylings of Corey Lee Landis; Cakecutter, an Echo
Park outfit offering rock with a soulful slant; The
Monolators, rockabilly-flavored rock 'n roll; and The
Shenangians, whose bouncy, hard-charging rock has been
compared to No Doubt.

The night will also feature a screening of the 2003 DIY
Film Festival award winning film, "The Utopian Society"
at 9 p.m. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with
director John Aguirre, moderated by DIY Film Festival
programming head and feature film director Richard
Martini.

Selections for screening and music performance slots
for future Club DIY dates in Los Angeles and other
cities are done through the 2004 DIY Music Festival
(www.diymusicfestival.com) and the 2004 DIY Film
Festival (www.diyfilmfestival.com). Potential
candidates can also bring their material to the Derby
and sign up.

The DIY Convention teaches musicians, filmmakers,
authors and entrepreneurs to create, promote, protect
and distribute independent film, music and books. To
join our mailing list, visit www.diyconvention.com.
Club DIY will be coming to San Francisco, Nashville and
New York City this Fall.

We've developed a proven way for packing clubs when touring the college towns of the U.S.  We're seeking an individual to learn this technique and become a Booking Agent.  We will train, provide necessary resources, and show you how to keep costs low.  What you have to do: Work the phones, use our leads for venues, sequence tour dates to minimize travel, and collect commissions.

This is a commission based opportunity.  This is a tough business, but you can follow in the footsteps of Ian Copeland, founder of FBI (Frontier Booking Int'l), who started with just The Police...now...he has Sting, R.E.M. and others...
