With a strong background as an athlete/gymnast, Patrice has used her Olympic
mentality in the music business with high finesse. Not long after, a
matrimonial path landed her in a family unbeknownst to her of a talented, up
and coming male group, who would soon hit the top of the charts and start
the boy bands craze. As New Edition and the likes of New Kids on the Block
began their careers, being in the New Edition family, Patrice experienced an
internship like no other. She began to learn the different phases of the
music business. Patrice worked with several solo artists and groups on
(artist development) which included imaging, self-confidence, self-control,
vocal techniques, song selection, demo session, packaging and song
submission for record deal considerations. She independently managed a
member of one of the hottest R&B girl groups called Brownstone, who were
first to sign through Sony's (MJJ Records) Michael Jackson's record label.
She also worked with renowned singer Brenda Holloway, who wrote several hits
while signed to Motown Records back in the day. They included "Every Little
Bit Hurts" and "You've Made Me So Very Happy.

Subject: Valuable info on potential music grants for Songsalive readers
bgallup@...
Send Email Send Email

Dear friends at Songsalive,

I've been receiving your great newsletters for a long time now and I always feel
I learn something of significant value. In my opinion...this journey is all
about doing whatever we can with whatever our "gifts"...and I'd love to give
back a little from my own area of experience and expertise. You see, not only am
I a songwriter, but I'm also a full time Grants Coordinator for the City of
Columbia, TN as well as the Director of Development for FilmNashville. Last
year, my grant proposals successfully generated over $10,000,000.

To be succinct, on Sept 23, I am offering what I believe is the first and
probably the only workshop of its kind, though, from the apparent level of
interest so far, it probably will not be the last. Because I am the Director of
Development for FilmNashville and have written the business plan for the
Nashville Composers Association (among other non-profits), the workshop will be
tailored to the needs and interests of documentary filmmakers as well as folks
in music and other areas of the arts.

The objectives of this workshop include helping participants understand:
* current trends in philanthropy (who gives money for what)
* how to research who has funding available
* how to develop a successful grant proposal

All participants will receive a resource workbook of reference material and
exercises to help them prepare their grant proposals. At the FilmNashville Board
Meeting yesterday, Tom Neff of the Documentary Channel and Anastasia Brown of
821 Entertainment, agreed to film the workshop and put it on DVD. It will, of
course, be aired on tv at a later date.

Also...all workshop participants...plus anyone who is interested in signing up
for the list can register to receive a free weekly e-newsletter which will
contain information regarding new funding programs, upcoming grant deadlines,
conferences, trainings, and other information relevant to grantseekers. This
newsletter is a co-branding program between FilmNashville; the TN Governor's
Office of Film, Music and Entertainment; the Nashville Mayor's Film Office and
Grant Station...the grant locator service which provides the weekly information.

I'd love to give back a little of the knowledge gleaned through 30 years of
working in the field of philanthropy..but helping others with their music
objectives. Please feel free to pass this information along to individuals on
your mailing list if you feel it would be of value and of interest to them.
Remember...there IS money out there! Please see the attached promo information
for additional details on the workshop.

Sincerely,
Bobbie Gallup

WORKSHOP OUTLINE:

Can you answer yes to any of the following?

.. "I find it painful and a strain when singing."
.. "I struggle to reach high notes."
.. "I need a bigger range."
.. "My vocal projection is weak."
.. "I wish my upper register were stronger."
.. "I don't feel comfortable singing falsetto."
.. "I need greater vocal control."
.. "I need greater breath control."
.. "I lose my voice after:
o Singing a few songs
o Talking loudly
o Shouting"
.. "I have a problem with articulation."
.. "When I sing I run out of air before finishing a phrase."

If you struggle with any or all of the above, Roxanne is holding a vocal
workshop to talk about how you can learn to overcome these problems. Listen
to her unique story of how she overcame severe vocal nodules without having
to have a throat operation.

Roxanne specializes in a vocal technique that includes:

.. Pain Free Singing,
.. Extensive range extension, and projection,
.. Articulation,
.. Vocal blending,

As well as working on:
. Tone
. Pitch
. Vocal Style
. Performance
.... And much more.....

Below is an introduction to The Vocal Exercise Double CD Pack: -

Welcome to the beginning of your beautiful voice:

This CD exercise set has been developed as a result of my personal
experience as a singer, and the experiences of students I have taught.

If you develop and maintain your own routine, using these exercises, in
combination with correct placement and breath support, I guarantee you will
achieve a spectacular improvement, not only in your range, but also in your
vocal control and projection. Furthermore these exercises will greatly aid
in the healing of damaged vocal chords.

How can I be so confident of this?

Because I went through this process myself, having had to deal with damaged
vocal chords, due to incorrect placement.
After years of working gruelling schedules of nightly performances, I woke
up one morning to find I could not produce a recognisable sound when
attempting to talk. I hadn't seen it coming, as I was unaware that I was
singing incorrectly at the time, and here it was, every singer's ultimate
nightmare: no voice. Although sad and deflated by my circumstance, I decided
to find out what I could do about this as soon as possible.

Now, many vocalists have had to confront this issue at some point in their
careers: "Nodules" or calluses have formed on their vocal chords, as a
result of bad vocal habits. Sometimes these nodules are so pronounced they
are referred to as a "polyp".

Some people decide to have these nodules surgically removed. While this has
often proven to be a successful method for dealing with the immediate
problem, it does not take care of the cause, and many singers find that
their nodules, within months of having been removed, begin to reappear.

In contrast to this "quick fix" approach, I decided to heal the damage to my
chords while developing a new and much stronger long-term strategy to
protect and enhance my voice.

As a result of learning correct vocal technique, the nodules on my vocal
chords disappeared and my singing voice returned. Everything I hoped to
achieve happened, and more. My range began to expand well beyond what it had
previously been and I had developed greater projection and control.

Through these exercises you will find that, if you follow the advice I
outline in the tutorial, you will notice a definitive improvement in all
aspects of your vocal style and production and if you practise these
exercises on a daily basis, I guarantee you will achieve the best version of
your voice that you possibly can.

It's an exciting journey you are about to embark upon and I wish you all the
best with your new routine.
Roxanne

ABOUT ROXANNE KIELY

Aside from working on her own career as a musician, songwriter and
performer,
Roxanne has developed a strong reputation as a vocal tutor for the past 14
years, counting many of Australia's current singing stars as pupils. Check
her website for more details (www.roxanne.kiely.com). In 2001, Roxanne and
her husband, Stephen Kiely, consolidated their individual creative efforts
under the business name ScoopFX. The original intention was for the name to
represent and manage them as solo performers, as well as the vehicle of
their original music, Prodigal Twins, and covers band, Cover ME. Since 2003
the business has expanded into vocal and musical instrument tuition. Their
annual Student Concerts have developed such a successful reputation around
Sydney, Australia that Roxanne and Stephen were recently commissioned to
produce the inaugural Search For A Star competition (www.scoopfx.com/star/).

With a weekly base of 90 students, ScoopFX Music Tuition demands a lot of
their time and attention, but they both value their song writing skills and
keep them honed by bringing on and co-writing with promising students, thus
passing on a greater wealth of musical knowledge via ScoopFX Music Tuition.

In 1997, after becoming disillusioned with the lack of support for
songwriters at ground level in Australia, Roxanne, with assistance from
co-founder gilli moon, formed Songsalive! (www.songsalive.org). Within a
couple of years the organization had grown from a handful of members in one
city, to an international member-driven group which has become a force in
every country in which it is represented. Since 1999, Roxanne has been
directing virtually all aspects of the organisation's Australian arm.

In 1997, Roxanne wrote a song called 'Binomea' and had her 25 piece
children's choir sing for Channel Seven's "World Around Us" program. The
documentary concerned the famous Australian landmark, the Jenolan Caves.
Recently, Roxanne was presented with the TSA (Tamworth Songwriters'
Association) Award for two of her songs, "Little Bit Of You" and "Many
Dreams Later", from her self-produced and self-funded album entitled "See
The Difference".

TESTIMONIALS:-
"Since beginning singing tuition with Roxanne Kiely, I am amazed at how much
better I am singing on so many levels. Fair enough that may sound clich?d -
but I am a male vocalist who has been performing

professionally for over 10 years and have had singing lessons from well
known & established singing teachers the entire time. Only now (finally) am
I seeing results I wish I had been having 10 years ago. My family are all
musically inclined and after even the 2nd and 3rd lesson, they commented on
how enjoyable it was to hear me start singing as I was. It is honestly all
because of Roxanne and her method. I have her CD's in the car and practise
for maybe 20 minutes a day and am able to complete numbered exercises that
are over double what I could reach on my initial lesson. I have been seeing
Roxanne for a weekly lesson for approx. 2 months now and have progressed
more in that time, than I did with all my previous lessons from other vocal
teachers put together. Words can really not describe just how impressed I am
with both her and my progression."

Josh Barker - 2006 Josh.barker@...

"My 16 year old daughter Caitlin started vocal tuition with Roxanne Kiely in
Feb 2006. Caitlin?s voice had been developing nicely over a number of years
but in the last 6 months we have seen remarkable improvements in her vocal
range, quality and breathing. At recent performances many people have
commented how much more powerful her voice has become. Roxanne?s suggestions
for performance techniques have been invaluable and have given Caitlin so
much more confidence. Over the years Caitlin has tried many different vocal
exercises, but Roxanne?s method produces results. I don?t have to remind her
to do them, she wants to, because she can see real improvement. With Roxanne
it?s not just the vocal tuition, it?s the enthusiasm, the supportive,
encouraging style, not only from Roxanne, but also from her partner Stephen,
who is ready to help and give advice when needed. We feel so fortunate to be
students of ScoopFX."
Kim Harnett - 2006 - kim.harnett@...

"Alaina Bodley has been attending singing lessons under Roxanne's tuition
for the last 10 to 11 months. She started singing at 10 years of age and had
had no previous experience or lessons. Alaina first began singing struggling
to reach most notes, as her voice was very airy and husky. After an
examination from an ENT specialist it was noticed that she was close to
getting nodules on her vocal chords. Roxanne encouraged Alaina to practise
projecting her voice forward and use the correct voice placement techniques
in order to not damage her young vocal chords. In time, with lessons just
once a week, Alaina's voice has improved tremendously. Recently Alaina has
sung songs with relative ease, which in the past she struggled to get
through. I am extremely pleased with her progress and she is very pleased
with herself as well." -

Nathalie Bodley - 2006 - nattersb@...

About CJ:

Sometime ago, while CJ was at the Kerrville Folk Festival, he sat down under
a tree and at the request of attending friends, started playing some of his
compositions. The down to earth melodies and cleverly observant lyrics in a
down-home, sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant kind of way attracted the
attention of attending musicians and songwriters. It wasn't much later that
those same talented individuals who gathered around to listen, began to lend
their talents to the music that CJ was making.

CJ passed away in late August and his wonderful presence will be missed by
all of us.

Email jimi@... or usa@... for details on signing up to
sing a song or two
in honor of CJ, dear friend and great songwriter. If you have a story to
share or other tidbits, feel free to come on down - "Mrs. Rodriguez" and
"The Lone Ranger" will be there too....

COST: Free entry, donations accepted

SPECIAL GUEST HOST: Jimi Yamagishi

Arrive early for the eclectic, jazz influenced instrumental sounds of Shawn
Cunnane on guitar - performers start promptly at 8pm and the CJ Littlepage
Tribute will be at 9pm.

of the songwriting craft. The workshops are open to all songwriters and

Dear friends,

I was deeply saddened to hear get the call this morning. CJ
Littlepage passed away alone in his home in Riverside last Thursday,
August 17th. His family in Missouri has been notified. There are
currently no known plans for a memorial service or funeral. I hope
to hear something though.

He was scheduled to perform this Saturday at our house concert and we
were devastated to hear the news of his passing. I was especially
looking forward to our audience getting the chance to hear his
charming, homegrown songs and to get to know the kind and gentle man.

He has friends in the music community both in California and in
Nashville. I hope you will pass this information on to your email
lists as I'm not sure if people who know him will get the news.

Jimi Yamagishi and I have talked of having a special show to honor
this talented singer songwriter. Please let us know if you would be
interested.

If you want to send a condolence to the family, the address is

The musician's friend, KCSN radio host Larry Wines, will be playing
some of CJs track on his show this Saturday morning some time between
9:00 and 10:00 a.m. You can tune in on 88.5 FM in the L.A. area and
you can listen live on the internet at www.KCSN.org Larry may have
some special guests performing a few of CJs songs as well.

May you rest in peace, CJ We will miss your sweet smile and

Hi Everyone, I wanted to let you know about a Vocal Workshop that I'll be
presenting on
Sunday, September 17th, in Boston. The workshop is titled "Sing Powerfully
Without Strain
or Vocal Blowout" and is by far my most popular workshop.

In the workshop we'll look at the primary causes of vocal strain and fatigue and
how to
handle them; how to increase vocal range and power without strain; effective
vocal warm-
up and cool-down techniques; and nutritional do's and don'ts for singers. I will
also show
you how you can remedy any current vocal fatigue or damage.

If you ever lose your voice after gigs or rehearsals, find that your range
decreases the
longer you sing, OR get a stiff, tired or sore throat during or after singing, I
CAN HELP!

Join us for this very important workshop on Sunday, September 17, 2006 2:00pm -
4:00pm

For more information on the workshop please give me a call at 617-536-4553. You
can
also go to our website at www.DevaStudiosBoston.com. Click on Workshops.

I hope to see you then!

Hello, All. It's been awhile since I've posted with the group. I'd like to
renew my
introduction to you and network a little.

I'm an Akron-Cleveland area composer/vocalist in need of immediate work. My
fortes are:
piano composition (contemporary dark rhythm-oriented or sparse, beautiful,
haunting,
mood/vibe)j; piano/vocal music: genres pop, jazzie, classically-oriented and
incorporated
styles into above piano music description). Looking to write especially for
film and t.v. I
have been involved in original music projects for over 20 years and have not
ventured into
writing professionally for piano solely, however, I've been writing piano
compositions since
I was 15. I studied Music Composition with a minor in vocal performance at The
University
of Akron. I'm a semester or two away from a Bachelor Degree in Music
Composition. I
wrote 3 CDs and also the Cleveland theme song to The Race For The Cure event,
all on
piano. For my band, I then translated my piano compositions to rock
arrangements with a
full electric band.

I'm also looking for connections to music supervisors for placement of my last 3
CDs
(original modern rock). I would be happy to email you a snippet of my latest
vocal work in
the studio and please see my site for further information, as well: http://
www.jetdogrecords.com

As for my photography, if any musician in my area needs artistic portraiture
(including
stage shots), please let me know. Please see my site for examples of my work:
http://
www.sunchaserphotography.com

If any composers are seeking a great vocalist for vibey music or pop/rock,
please email
me.

Thanks, Robin Graham
