SOUTHEAST FLORIDA DRUM/DANCE CIRCLE NEWSLETTER
SPECIAL CALENDAR EDITION
Friday 25 January 2007
Dear Drummers and Dancers,
Happy New Year from the SE Florida Drum Circle Newsletter!
As a community service, for those leaders who schedule and lead drum
circles and other celebrations, here are the full and new Moons, the
solstices and equinoxes (starting days of the 4 seasons), and the day-
light savings start and end dates, for 2008 for Florida (Eastern Time
Zone).
This info is obtained from the U.S. Naval Observatory website at:
http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/EarthSeasons.php and is specific
for where we live. To convert the times in the Naval Observatory
charts to Eastern time, subtract 5 hours - we are 5 time zones west
of Greenwich, the universal time zone that they use in the charts.
Information taken off printed calendars, and other sources, is often in-
accurate - sometimes off by an entire day! - because they are printed in,
or calculated for, a distant time zone (say Pacific Time). For example,
say that the full Moon falls later on a Tuesday night here in our Eastern
Time Zone, but falls early morning on Wednesday in California, not just
because of time differences, but because of distance in miles around the
Earth's circumference. So if we mistakenly waited to celebrate the full
Moon till Wednesday night, in this example, we'd already be almost an en-
tire day off (the Moon would be 1/14 or 7% past it's fullness by that
time).
So here are the true, local times. The ambitious among you can mark
these on your calendar and be prepared for the whole year.
