FRIDAY, JULY 18TH
Miami Beach Full Moon Drum Circle
Monthly on the night of the full Moon, free
Time: after dark till midnight (when the beaches officially close) or till much later if no
security patrol comes along to remind them to leave.
Remember, it can be chilly on the beach during the cooler months - dress accordingly.
Held at:
"The public announcements for the Full Moon Eve and Full Moon Night drum circles were
stopped because the rave or wild beach party atmosphere that had developed, including
large numbers of young people and alcohol/drugs, drew the attention of the local authorities,
and caused arrests and closing of some drum circles by the police." "This does not mean
that the drum circles have stopped. They are just not being publicly advertised. People are
getting in touch with each other directly and going out to drum at various different places on
Miami Beach on the Full Moon Eve, the Full Moon Night, and even the New Moon Night."
"Sometimes we use the open discussion site [listed below] to coordinate, but mostly we just
call each other by phone."
For the most up-to-date info on where they plan to gather this month, go to the website/dis-
cussion group below, or contact Mark Richards or any other Miami area drummer that is 'in
the loop'.
On that website - both 75th/76th and 85th at Collins (A1A) are the most commonly
mentioned locations.
One online suggestion is for 76th and Collins - "Full Moon eve starts around 8:30pm,
this one starts later".

the full Moon drum circle.

SUNDAY, JULY 6TH, 13TH, 20TH, 27TH New listing!
Oak Grove Park Drum CIrcle
Every Sunday, 4:00-6:00pm, free
Comments by Mark Richards:
"Has a distinctly Haitian flavor - come ready to pick up some sweet island grooves. There are
more good (really good) drummers than there are drums, so bring extras if you have them.
There is some seating - but you may want to bring your own. There is a great playground for
kids."
"The atmosphere is one of acceptance and respect, with various different cultures and styles.
There is lots of listening as well as playing, and unexpected treasures rising to the surface.
This is one where the heart seems to take precedence over style or technique (although style
and technique are not lacking). I'm also happy to say that the shaker/bell section, while not
totally non-existant, seems to be limited to those great souls who understand that there is no
grandstanding or 'soloing' with a bell or shaker - just the hard (and sometimes painful) work of
small, repetetive hand/arm movements that no listener will ever express open admiration for
and only the other drummers will ever appreciate (usually because they know how hard it is)."
Held at: Oak Grove Park & Recreation Center, 690 NE 159th St., Miami FL, across the lake
from the parking lot. Go north on NE 6th Ave. from 135th St. It's at the intersection of NE 6th
Ave. & NE 159th St.

Unity on the Bay - Full Moon Drum Circle
Monthly on the night of the full Moon, 7-9pm, $10
Began April 2008. Coordinated by Carlos Manuel Planas and Jude Byrne.
"We meet in a church, have a spiritually-flavored drum circle, and therefore have a zero
tolerance drug and alcohol scene. We want to create a non-threatening safe space, a
family atmosphere. We believe that the music on its own creates a healing, natural high,
so artificial ingredients are not needed in this environment."
All instruments are welcome. People show up with djembes, doumbeks, congas, etc.
Latin rhythms may predominate, but all rhythms are welcome.
Held at: Unity on the Bay Church, 411 NE 21st St., Miami FL, near Biscayne Bay

SATURDAY, JULY 5TH
Trance Dance and Live Didjeridoo - Led by Ernesto Ortiz
7:30-10:30pm, $20
Once the event starts, the doors are closed, so please arrive early.
Trance Dance is a unique blend of healing sounds, dynamic percussive rhythms, transformational
breathing techniques, and the innovative use of a blindfold or bandana - together stimulating a
trance state that promotes spiritual awakenings, mental clarity, physical stamina, and emotional
well-being. Driven by unique musical soundtracks recorded specifically for this method of healing,
Trance Dance takes participants on an inner journey not limited to our normal perceptions of
space/time. Ritual trance journeys have been a vital part of shamanic and Eastern dance cultures
for thousands of years. Our contemporary approach to Trance Dance brings together the richness
of these ancient rituals with some startlingly effective modern techniques. We'll have drums, rattles,
and fans to create a Shamanic experience for you that will connect you back to your source. Sha-
manic healing ritual, plus aura and chakra cleansing, will be a part of your experience.
Enjoy live didjeridoo by Master player JODA, where the didjeridoo will be woven between all of the
dance music to create a tapestry of primal, Aboriginal sounds.
Bring a bandanna or blindfold.
Bring some fruit, cookies, or whatever to share in community at the end.
Held at: Yoga Grove, 3100 S. Dixie Hwy., Suite 401, Coconut Grove FL 33133
Directions: one block north of 32nd Ave on U.S. 1 (S. Dixie Highway), on the east side, in the Aca-
demy Building, on the 4th floor. 305-448-3332

Ernesto has been facilitating trance dance since 1992, and was trained and certified by the origina-
tor of trance dance as we know it, Frank Natale ('Professor Trance'), at the Natale Institute.

Wellness Website Needs Quotes from Drummers
I am building a wellness website...trance dance is included. Naturally drumming has a huge part
in it. I am looking for a few drummers to share their drum journeys in a couple of lines that will be
quoted. What it feels like to drum, the connective or spiritual experiences in lifting consciousness
through resonance, about dancers and rhythm, etc...
Thanks.

Volunteer Needed to Run Kirtan Calendar (Meetup Group)
Seeking a volunteer to promote kirtan by any/all artists in South Florida. You should be capable
of learning to maintain a calendar that announces events by administering a Meetup Group
(which is already established and running). You do NOT need to organize events - just distribute
e-mails announcing the events that others plan and host. It takes approximately 3-4 hours per
month. Rewards are intangible, but priceless. Prior experience with Meetup.com, Yahoo Groups,
or similar application is helpful, but not required. Assitance in learning the skills will be provided.

Drum Rhythms Education Website
by Jim Salem <jsalem@...>
Learn some new rhythms or subtleties: http://www.newview.org/salem/rhythm.html
Excerpt from the home page:
Here you will find transcriptions of rhythms I have learned over the years. While I have tried
to give credit where appropriate, please assume that any mistakes are my own. Publishing
rhythm transcriptions is a tricky business.
1. Rhythms are played differently in different areas.
2. Notation cannot capture the feel of a rhythm.
3. Traditional rhythms are part of a culture.
Respect those who have created the music in the world.
To learn traditional rhythms, take classes with the Masters.
Listen before you play. Communicate. Open your heart.

Drummers Needed for Lammas (Pagan) Ritual - August 2nd
(Rehearsal is this Saturday, July 19th!)
I am Black Diamond, a member of Moonpath CUUPs (Council of Unitarian Universalist
Pagans). I have created (and will be officiating at) a new ritual for Lammas this year, the
Green Corn Festival. It will be in the style of an Intertribal Green Corn Ceremony (First
Harvest). It will be on Saturday evening, August 2nd, at the Unitarian Church of Fort
Lauderdale, 3790 NW 21st Ave. (north of Oakland Park Blvd.), Ft. Lauderdale FL. We
will be doing Native American-style drumming (however, on individual drums). I wish to
extend an invitation to any drummers who would be interested in helping with that.
There will be a practice drumming session with Debe Fischer, my Lead Drummer, and
me at the Unitarian Church of Fort Lauderdale at 2:30pm (on the patio), on July 19th,
during the Moonpath Psychic Fair [see complete description in the Broward County
Edition of this Drum Circle Newsletter]. Drummers wishing to join in should bring a
beater (drumstick) for their drum. Shakers, maracas, jingles, rainsticks, and native flutes
are also welcome.
For the actual ritual, Native American-type dress and adormnents, while not required,
would be enjoyable. This is not a "mock" festival, it is respectful of Native customs. Out
of respect for those customs, women are requested to dress modestly, with leg-covering
clothing.
Blessings to you.

F. WHAT ARE YOUR DRUMMING/DANCING OPPORTUNITIES?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This month there are about 70 opportunities to drum/dance in our SE Florida area -
from Miami-Dade (13 events), through Broward (34 events), Palm Beach (18 events),
and Martin (5 events) Counties!
• Some repeat weekly, or monthly, or on the full or new Moons, and some are special one-time
events
• Some are outdoors (parks, beaches, backyards...) and some are indoors (homes, businesses,
churches, bars, arenas...)
• Some are in the daytime and some are at night
• Some are hidden away & private and some are public & almost exhibitionistic
• Some are eclectic world-beat improv/jam sessions and some focus on more repetitive trance-
drumming, or on drumming from just one cultural tradition (African, Latin, Middle-Eastern,
Native American, etc.)
• Some have bonfires, some have candles, some have the Sun or the Moon
• Some have entertainers (fire-twirlers, fire-breathers, poi-spinners, etc.)
• Some are strongly-led, some are mildly guided, and some are leaderless
• Some are flavored by a particular spiritual tradition (Pagan, Christian, Native American, Yogic/
Vedic, etc.) and some are free of any mention of any beliefs (politics, religion, etc.)
• Most are clothed, but one weekly drum circle is hosted by a clothing-optional (nudist) community
• Some have lessons before-hand and some don't
• Some attract only a handful of participants and some draw 100 or even 400+ drummers/dancers!
Try out a few drum circles and find the style(s) and vibes that you enjoy.
