Please - anti-authoritarian folks, drugs, alcohol, and showboating are unwelcome.
This is a community-oriented drum circle, famous for it's good feeling, mutual re-
spect, and emphasis on group coherence.
"Last month we had 130+ people. This event just keeps growing. This has become a won-
derful 'tribal' celebration, with drummers, dancers, fire-performers, and quiet on-lookers. It's
the perfect confluence of the 5 elements - soft sand underfoot (Earth/smell), gently-lapping
waves (water/taste), full Moon reflecting the Sun (fire/sight), soft ocean breezes (air/touch),
and enchanting rhythms (space/hearing) - this is sub-tropical South Florida at its finest.
Please come join us - don't miss this gathering!" - Michael Goodman, event coordinator
EVENT GUIDELINES - FOR EVERYONE'S MAXIMUM ENJOYMENT
This is a community drum circle with leadership that generally trusts the collective conscious-
ness of the group and remains mostly unseen. But having led drum circles and other large
events for years, and unfortunately having watched the disasterous experiences of both the
Broward and Miami-Dade full Moon drum circles last year (they were both kicked off their
beaches due to out-of-control anti-authoritarian behavior and drug/alcohol use) - and
having discussed the situation with many of you who attend - I have been asked to establish
and enforce some necessary and common-sense guidelines that make the evening more en-
joyable for the great majority, and assure our continued peaceful use of this precious beach
& park. 95% of you who attend already follow these natural courtesies spontaneously - but to
prevent any problems from taking hold, I'm publishing these lessons that we have learned:
(a) Big drum circles don't work so well if drummers are noticably chemically altered (alco-
hol/drugs); please don't arrive in, or transform into, that state. Plus, alcohol/drug use
is illegal on this beach and jeapordizes our good standing with the Lake Worth Police
and Lake Worth city government.
(b) It works best if drummers gather near each other (not way across the big circle), listen
to each other, and avoid forming separate sub-circles inside or outside of the main com-
munity circle.
(c) When a group rhythm ends, let it end! Please allow there to be some silence, and see
what new rhythm emerges out of that silence.
(d) Please - no drum cowboys - no showboating; make group coherence more important
than individual fulfillment. Make it a group jam session, a 'drum conversation', not a
'personal performance'. No matter how great a drummer you are, this drum circle is
not an invitation for you to take over, show off, or have an attitude that the rest of us are
lucky just to be able to drum along with you (if we can keep up).
(e) Please allow a variety of rhythms, speeds, & loudnesses through the night - slow sensual
rhythms, with lots of 'empty space', are just as beautiful as hard, fast, loud stuff. Many
of our beautiful dancers request more slow, sensuous rhythms; let's honor the goddes-
ses! Slow rhythms - with 'empty space' - take more musical skill to maintain. If you are
not comfortable with these rhythms, don't 'hijack' the rhythm and turn it into something
fast, busy, and loud. Instead back off and just follow the group, or take a break.
(f) Please only play big, base drums (or cowbells and other 'penetrating' instruments) loudly
if you can play ON the beat, not drag the tempo, and can be sensitive to when to speed
us up or slow us down. Big drums (and penetrating instruments) lead the circle, and re-
quire both skill and sensitivity/alertness.
(g) There will be community announcements at least twice during the evening, lasting around
5 minutes each time; please cooperate by stopping your drumming and talking so that we
can respectfully listen to each other and to the event coordinator. Anyone is welcome to
make announcements relating to drumming & dancing.
(h) The park officially closes at midnight, but this is loosely enforced by the Lake Worth Po-
lice - sometimes earlier, sometimes later. When the police car announces that the park
is closed, please pack up and leave quickly, so that we continue to be welcome there.
(i) This event happens rain or shine; in case of rain, or if it gets too windy on the beach, we
drum/dance under the huge picnic shelter (pavilion) in the same park, 100 yds. west of
the beach - you drive past it on your left after you enter the park. It's well-protected by
a hill from the ocean wind.
(j) As long as they conform to the law (which is their own responsibility to research), fire-
performers may perform on this public beach, either inside the drum circle (if they do
so safely - have a safety spotter, safety equipment, and have cleared a safe space),
or outside the circle (along the beach). Performers understand that they are acting as
independent agents, not as representatives of the drum circle or it's organizers.
(k) Dancers of all styles and experience levels are warmly invited to improvise to the drum-
ming and even to request or start particular rhythms. It's much more inspiring for the
drummers if the dancers look at and interact with the drummers.
(l) Non-percussion instruments and vocals are welcome (we've had didjeradoos, violins,
flutes, guitars, singing bowls, saxaphones, melodicas, etc.), as long as their owners
understand that they are there to accompany the drummers. They must complement
the drum rhythms, not attempt to lead, dominate, solo, etc. That requires soft, sensi-
tive, cooperative playing.
(m) The space inside the circle of drummers is reserved for dancers and fire-performers,
and for drummers to walk about unimpeded. Both for everyone's safety, and to respect
the dancers/performers/drummers, please don't sit inside the circle, and don't put blank-
ets, belongings, or sitting children inside the circle.
(n) Remember, it can be chilly on the beach during the cooler months - dress accordingly.
To avoid the disasterous problems that other full Moon drum circles have experienced, and
at the request of many drummers and dancers, we have published these event guidelines -
to maintain a coherent and respectful atmosphere. And we have met with and obtained the
cooperation of the Lake Worth police in enforcing these guidelines. Anyone (1) either con-
sistantly or blatantly disrespecting these published event guidelines, (2) ignoring the requests
of the event coordinator, or (3) causing a public nuisance or disturbing the peace, will quickly
be escorted from the event.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY
1. Miami Beach Full Moon Drum Circle
SATURDAY, AUGUST 16TH
Monthly on the night of the full Moon, Miami Beach FL, free
Time: after 9:00pm till around 1am
Held at:
"The public announcements for the Full Moon Eve and Full Moon Night drum circles were
stopped because the rave or wild beach party atmosphere that had developed, including
large numbers of young people and alcohol/drugs, drew the attention of the local authori-
ties, and caused arrests and closing of some drum circles by the police." "This does not
mean that the drum circles have stopped. They are just not being publicly advertised.
People are getting in touch with each other directly and going out to drum at various differ-
ent places on Miami Beach on the full Moon eve, the full Moon night, and even the new
Moon night." "Sometimes we use the open discussion site [listed below] to coordinate, but
mostly we just call each other by phone."
For the most up-to-date info on where they plan to gather this month, go to the website/
discussion group below, or contact Mark Richards or any other Miami area drummer that
is 'in the loop'.
On that website - over the months, 75th, 79th/80th, 85th/86th at Collins (A1A) are the
most commonly mentioned locations for this drum circle gathering.
For August, Mark Richards wrote: "On August 16th we have the full moon party at the
beach. Mixed reviews about the last couple of months. If you go, have in mind [that]
drinking is prohibited at the beach, and that [the] beach patrol likes to shut down every-
thing around 1 am. If you're serious about drumming, the best thing is to go early in the
night."
For August, Gene Shapiro wrote: "Drumming and dancing on the beach at 79th St. this
month. Let's try out this location. It seems very quiet and away from the lights of the city.
Friday starts around 8:30pm. Saturday starts later..."
One reviewer wrote about the July event: "75th St. started out as an intimate affair, but
became a very pleasant and large beach party by around 10:30pm, with Manny & his
timbales arriving about that time to entertain the crowd of spectators. People have re-
ported that the very best drumming and dancing took place very late - after midnight..."
Another reviewer wrote about July: "I thought the whole point of the drum circle was for
everyone to participate in celebrating the full Moon? When the group with the large tim-
bales (and bells and whistles) arrived, the whole ambiance changed, especially when the
crowds of people with drinks and flashing cameras arrived shortly after. It was anything
but pleasant. I looked around at those near me with djembes, and we clearly felt left out...
The timbales gang was there to entertain the crowds."

2. Miami Beach Full Moon EVE Drum Circle
FRIDAY, AUGUST 15TH
Monthly on the night BEFORE the full Moon, Miami Beach FL, free
Time: 8:30pm till around 1am
Held at: Please read the discussion about the Miami Beach Full Moon Drum Circle above.
The same information applies here as well.

One drummer reported: "In July, Happy circled the 75th St. circle with the Hare Krishnas...
Some thought that the mobile PA system that the Hare Krishnas brought was a little inap-
propriate. People have reported that the very best drumming and dancing took place very
late - after midnight...
For August, Mark Richards sent this message: "Mark Richards invites us to Bagua, 4736
NE 2nd Ave., in the Design District, 305-757-9857. Bagua's Vision: to create a physical
space to house the most uniquely inspired, wonderful, harmoniously beautiful retail store/
center and garden found anywhere. This Friday (August 15th) we can drum at Bagua from
9pm till midnight. Rain or (moon) shine! If it's pleasant out, we can drum in the garden,
and if it's wet, we can play inside. Bring your instrument(s), whatever they are. Bring your
desire to explore and experiment. I'll have some extra drums."
One reviewer said, about the night after the full Moon in July: "The drum circle at Bagua,
with Sean Dibble in attendance, was the 'real deal'. The garden space was great, the
drummers were good, and the establishment made everyone feel welcome."
For August, Gene Shapiro wrote: "Drumming and dancing on the beach at 79th St. this
month. Let's try out this location. It seems very quiet and away from the lights of the city.
Friday starts around 8:30pm. Saturday starts later..."
3. Moonchine Full Moon Party (with Drum Circle)
SATURDAY, AUGUST 16TH
Monthly on the night of the full Moon
8pm onward, free
Inside: sushi, drink specials, kareoke
Outside: drum circle around the fire on the back patio
Held at: Moonchine Asian Bistro, 7100 Biscayne Blvd., Miami FL
One experienced drummer reported about July: "The Moonchine...was a little disappoint-
ing. We got there around 8pm. There was no real space for drummers. The 'fire-pit' was
in a little outside alcove where the outside bar was. There was room for maybe 5 or 6
drummers, and it was obvious that the wait-staff would be barging through all the time to
fill their bar orders. And then, of course, there were the DJs ('nuff said). We had dinner
(which was very good), but we didn't even unpack our drums. Now, that said, the space
was very pleasant for dining, and had the potential to be good for a drum jam (but maybe
not around the 'fire pit')..." There may have been drumming later in the evening, but this
reviewer left and thus can't comment.
4. Tobacco Road Full Moon Party - Drum Circle & Music Jam
This drum circle has been canceled for months.
5. Unity on the Bay - Full Moon Drum Circle
SATURDAY, AUGUST 16TH
Monthly on the night of the full Moon
Began April 2008, 7-9pm, $10
Coordinated by Carlos Manuel Planas and Jude Byrne. We meet in a church, have a
spiritually-flavored drum circle, and therefore have a zero tolerance drug and alcohol
scene. We want to create a non-threatening safe space, a family atmosphere. We be-
lieve that the music on its own creates a healing, natural high, so artificial ingredients
are not needed in this environment. All instruments are welcome. People show up with
djembes, doumbeks, congas, etc. Latin rhythms may predominate, but all rhythms are
welcome.
Held at: Unity on the Bay Church, 411 NE 21st St., Miami FL, near Biscayne Bay

3. DRUM CIRCLE OPPORTUNITIES
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are about 50 opportunities to drum/dance each month in our SE Florida area -
from Miami-Dade, through Broward, Palm Beach, and Martin Counties!
• Some repeat weekly, or monthly, or on the full or new Moons, and some are special one-time
events
• Some are outdoors (parks, beaches, backyards...) and some are indoors (homes, businesses,
churches, bars, arenas...)
• Some are in the daytime and some are at night
• Some are hidden away & private and some are public & almost exhibitionistic
• Some are eclectic world-beat improv/jam sessions and some focus on more repetitive trance-
drumming, or on drumming from just one cultural tradition (African, Latin, Middle-Eastern,
Native American, etc.)
• Some have bonfires, some have candles, some have the Sun or the Moon
• Some have entertainers (fire-twirlers, fire-breathers, poi-spinners, etc.)
• Some are strongly-led, some are mildly guided, and some are leaderless
• Some are flavored by a particular spiritual tradition (Pagan, Christian, Native American, Yogic/
Vedic, etc.) and some are free of any mention of any beliefs (politics, religion, etc.)
• Most are clothed, but 1 weekly drum circle is hosted by a clothing-optional (nudist) community
• Some have lessons before-hand and some don't
• Some attract only a handful of participants; some draw 100 or even 400+ drummers/dancers!
Try out a few drum circles and find the style(s) and vibes that you enjoy.
