2. Palm Beach County Full Moon Drum Circle (Lake Worth Beach)

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14TH, 8PM-MIDNIGHT   INCLUDES REVISED GUIDELINES

Held monthly on the night of the full Moon
Free (except for parking meters)

"Over the past months we've been having between 100-150 people show up.  This has
become a wonderful 'tribal' celebration, with
drummers, dancers, fire-performers, and
quiet on-lookers.  People remark that it's
the perfect confluence of the 5 elements - soft
sand underfoot (Earth/smell), gently-lapping waves (water/taste), full Moon reflecting the
Sun (fire/sight), soft ocean breezes (air/touch), & enchanting rhythms (space/hearing).
One reviewer said: 'This is sub-tropical South Florida at its finest.'  Please come join us -
don't miss this gathering!" - Michael Goodman, event coordinator

Please note: anti-authoritarian folks, drug/alcohol use, and showboating are un-
welcome.  This is a community-oriented drum circle, famous for it's good feeling,
mutual respect, and emphasis on group coherence.

DRUM CIRCLE GUIDELINES - FOR EVERYONE'S MAXIMUM ENJOYMENT   REVISED
This is a community drum circle - and as the organizer I mostly remain unseen and trust
the collective consciousness of the group.  Reasons for the recent exception to that poli-
cy follows:

IMPORTANT LOCAL HISTORY:
Many of you are aware that the two other large full Moon drum circles in our area (Ft.
Lauderdale for Broward County, and Miami Beach for Miami-Dade County) were both
kicked off their beaches last year by the local authorities, due to out-of-control anti-
authoritarian behavior
and drug/alcohol use, amplified by drum circle leaders who for
years were afraid to, or unskilled at, asserting some leadership and giving those circles
some direction and guidance.

Group dynamics is a fairly predictable science: in the absence of useful leader-
ship - egos, anti-authority battles, and anarchy reign.
By the time that years of
non-leadership had passed, small things had amplified into big things: drinking & drug-
ging were blatant, some attendees were openly hostile to the police, the beach was
left trashed (with hundreds of bottles - some broken), the time for stopping was ignored
(leading to numerous noise complaints from neighbors), parking rules were ignored, all
semblance of a true community drum jam had evaporated (multiple rhythms competed
for the attention of the circle - often degenerating into multiple circles right next to each
other; drum egos reigned - showboating replaced subtlety of rhythmic composition;
drummers treated each other with rudeness and disdain)...  These full Moon drum cir-
cles became a cross between adolescent parties/raves and anarchistic battle-
grounds
- drummers against drummers, drummers against police authority.  Chaos,
rudeness, and ego ruled.

The Broward County circle, eventually and with difficulty, found a new location (Pom-
pano Beach).  But to avoid the same problems from re-developing, they don't publi-
cize their location, and they strictly ban drugs, alcohol, and fire performances.  They've
gone from 300+ people in attendance last year down to 20-25 now.

The Miami-Dade County circle has never found a new beach location; they move from
one beach to another each month, they've avoided publicly announcing where they'll
be, and they try to stay invisible enough to not stir up police action.

Both circles - each with over a decade of history - at one time the largest, most
well-known & popular drum circles in SE Florida, had the life knocked out of them
and lost their feeling of ease and freedom.

HOW WE CAN AVOID THESE PROBLEMS:

Some recent behavior - rudeness and disrespect of our leadership & atmosphere, drum-
mers who showboat and create division in the circle, blatant drug or alcohol intoxication
and use at the drum circle, etc. - have caused many local drummers & dancers to speak
up and ask me (in my capacity as event coordinator) to take action - to give some lead-
ership and direction to the event to so that we don't start down the path that led
to the demise of the other full Moon circles
,
especially now that our Palm Beach
County Full Moon Drum Circle is growing in popularity and getting so much bigger.  Be-
haviors that were no problem when we had 25 people become big problems when
we're approaching 150.

And many of us feel that our event atmosphere & location are worth protecting!
Atmosphere: We have cultured a very beautiful, peaceful, cooperative, tribal gathering,
appreciated by many.
Location: We have searched for alternatives, and have concluded that if we lose the
use of this park and beach there are NO other beaches that we could move to that meet
all our criteria (e.g. no residences nearby to complain about noise, easy parking, open
till late at night, centrally located in Palm Beach County, with cooperative local authori-
ties, etc.)

Since I've led drum circles for years (this one and others), and professionally organized
large events for decades, and since I'm a trained consultant in group dynamics, I have
no difficulty in recognizing and taking the necessary action - by establishing and en-
forcing some common-sense guidelines that will make the full Moon gathering
more enjoyable for the great majority and safeguard our continued use of this
precious beach.

These guidelines have emerged only after many, many hours of discussions with
many local drummers and dancers
about these issues - at the drum circles, by phone,
via e-mail - and they are intended to make clear to everyone what kind of behavior and
interpersonal attitude is or is not in tune with the wishes of the majority of the community.

From the explanation above, and from the huge amount of community involvement, you
can tell that this is not a power trip, nor designed to control people and tell them what to
do.  Instead, these guidelines are designed to protect and preserve something that
we find precious.
The general feeling of our 'tribe' is, that if some folks don't like the en-
ergy and atmosphere of this circle (that has developed over many years of group consen-
sus), and if those folks don't want to heed the lessons of the other full Moon circles, then
they are free to create other full Moon drum events more to their liking, as some have al-
ready done.

Remember: 95% of us who attend this circle already follow these natural courte-
sies spontaneously; but to nip any developing problems in the bud, I'm putting
these event guidelines in writing
.  Each point is based on (1) actual experiences or
problems that we've had at drum circles over the years, and on the lessons that we've
learned from those experiences, plus (2) specific requests from many of you.

GENERAL DRUM CIRCLE GUIDELINES:

(a) Big drum circles don't work so well if drummers are noticeably chemically altered (al-
      cohol/drugs)
; please don't arrive in, or transform into, that state if you are actively drum-
ming.  Altered awareness makes social judgment poor (we miss or misinterpret social
cues about the responses of others to our behavior or drumming), makes it difficult to
pay attention to the rhythms and energies of others (making it hard to play well with the
group), and alters one's sense of time (rhythm).

(b) It works best if all the drummers stand or sit near each other (not way across the big
circle, or outside the circle), if we really listen to each other, and if we avoid forming se-
parate 'sub-circles' or cliques inside or outside of the main circle.

(c) When a group rhythm ends, let it end!  Please allow there to be some silence, and see
what new rhythm emerges out of that silence.

(d) Please - no drum cowboys - no showboating; make group coherence more important
than individual fulfillment.  Make it a group jam session, a 'drum conversation' among
the whole group, not a 'personal performance' by a few.  No matter how great a drum-
mer you are, this drum circle is not an invitation for you to take over, show off, or have
an attitude that the rest of us are lucky just to be able to drum along with you (if we can).
If showboating is your idea of a fun evening of drumming, then this is not the right drum
      circle for you.

(e) Please allow a variety of rhythms, speeds, & loudnesses through the night; slow sen-
sual rhythms, with lots of 'empty space', are just as beautiful as hard, fast, loud stuff.
Many of our beautiful dancers are requesting more slow, sensuous rhythms; let's honor
the goddesses!  These slow rhythms - with 'empty space' - take more musical skill to
maintain.  If you are not comfortable with these rhythms, or the kind of energy they re-
flect, please don't 'hijack' the rhythm and turn it into something fast, busy, and loud.  In-
stead, please back off and just follow the group, or take a break from drumming.  If only
fast, driving, packed rhythms are your idea of a fun evening of drumming, then this is
not the right drum circle for you.

(f) Please only play loud or penetrating instruments (big bass drums, large frame drums,
cowbells, etc.) loudly if you can (1) play ON the beat, (2) not drag the tempo, (3) be
sensitive to when to speed us up or slow us down, and (4) physically maintain the beat
you start for that whole number.  Big drums lead the circle, and require skill, sensitivity/
alertness, & persevering physical strength to play well.  If you're not up to this leadership
challenge, please play some instrument that blends in more.

(g) There will be community announcements at least twice during the evening, lasting for
around 5 minutes each time, during gaps between drum rhythms.  When your hosts ask
for your attention, please cooperate by stopping your drumming and talking, so that we
can respectfully listen to each other.  Anyone is welcome to make announcements relat-
ing to drumming & dancing, or relating to events promoting personal growth.  If someone
is announcing something on a topic that is of no interest to you, please be polite - don't
interrupt, don't make noise, don't hassle the speaker.

(h) Dancers of all styles and experience levels are warmly invited to improvise to the drum-
ming and even to request or start particular rhythms.  Dancers: please remember that
it's much more inspiring for the drummers if you sometimes look at and interact with
them - make your dancing part of the drum circle 'conversation'.

(i) Non-percussion instruments and vocals are welcome (we've had didjeradoos, violins,
flutes, guitars, singing bowls, saxophones, melodicas, etc.), as long as you understand
that they are to accompany the drummers.  You must complement the drum rhythms,
not attempt to lead, dominate, solo, etc.  That is trickier than it might appear, and re-
quires soft, sensitive, cooperative, skillful playing or singing/chanting.

(j) The space inside the circle of drummers is reserved for dancers and for drummers
to walk about unimpeded.  Both for everyone's safety, and to respect the dancers/
drummers, please don't sit inside the circle, and don't put blankets, belongings, or sit-
     ting children inside the circle.

(k) Please step well outside the big circle of drummers to socialize/talk.  Discussions held
inside the circle block the line of sight, discourage dancing, and make it harder for the
drummers to focus on the sounds of the other drummers.

(l) Smokers - please step well outside (and downwind of) the big circle of drummers if you
must smoke.  Drumming and dancing are, for many people, aerobic activities and we've
had many requests that smokers be extra considerate to not make others in or near the
     drum circle breathe their smoke.

POINTS SPECIFIC TO THIS DRUM CIRCLE:

(a) The park officially closes at midnight, but this is loosely enforced by the Lake Worth
Police - sometimes earlier, sometimes later.  When the police car announces that the
park is closed, please pack up & leave quickly, so that we continue to be welcome there.

(b) This event happens rain or shine; in case of rain, or if it gets too windy on the beach,
we drum/dance under the huge picnic shelter (pavilion) in the same park, 100 yds. west
of the beach - you drive past it on your left 100 yds. after you enter the park.  It's well-
protected by a hill from the ocean wind.

(n) Remember, it can be chilly and/or windy on the beach during the cooler months -
      dress accordingly.

These common-sense guidelines will make the evening more fulfilling for the great majority,
maintain our beautiful atmosphere, and avoid the disasterous problems that befell the other
major full Moon drum circles in
SE Florida.  We have already met with and obtained the co-
operation of the Lake Worth Police in enforcing these guidelines.  Anyone who (1) disregards
these guidelines, or (2) ignores the requests of the event coordinator, or (3) causes a public
nuisance or disturbs the peace, will be warned the first time.  Repeat violations (or blatant
first violations) will result in the police being called without warning and in their removal of the
violator from the drum circle.  If these guidelines, and the community attitude and values that
they represent, don't match your idea of a fun drum evening, we respectfully ask that you
don't attend this event.

Editor's history report:

This drum circle has an interesting past.  It was created around April 2006 and run by Joe
and Jay (
then called Rhythm Genius, now called The Beat Bombers), sporadically at first,
on occasional Friday nights, and by January 2007 on a couple of Saturday nights each
month.  In those days, it had a reputation for being difficult to pin down, sometimes only
getting going at 10 or 11pm and running on through the night till near sunrise.

By May 2007, the Beat Bombers announced that they would shift this drum circle to the
full Moon night of each month and start earlier (8pm).  They honored that schedule for
about 10 months, and then announced in April 2007 that they were pulling out from run-
ning it.  In person, Joe told me that "we [the Beat Bombers] often get performance gigs
on that night so we can't keep running it".  That would make sense if the full Moon only
fell on Friday or Saturday nights (performance nights for professional musicians), but the
full Moon rotates and only falls on Friday or Saturday night 2/7 (28%) of the time each
year.  And after they cancelled their full Moon circle, The Beat Bombers didn't seem to
have any trouble coming to the bigger Palm Beach County Full Moon Drum Circle (in Lake
Worth) most months.
Noticing both of these facts, some drummers and dancers told me
that they assumed that there was more to Joe's & Jay's decision to stop hosting their full
Moon drum circle than what they'd revealed.

One of the drummers in the Jupiter Beach area, Bob Roper, took up the slack when the
Beat Bombers pulled out - but he soon changed the circle from the full Moon to the 1st,
3rd, and 5th Saturday nights of each month, and that was the schedule for a few months.
Attendance was minimal and the circle was even canceled without explanation one Satur-
day night in August with just a few hours' notice.

In September 2008, after five months away, it was announced that the Beat Bombers had
'reinstated' their monthly full Moon drum circle; Bob canceled his Saturday night schedule
and merged his activities back with The Beat Bombers.

1. Chakra Cleansing Full Moon Drum Circle
(Used to be called Unity on the Bay - Full Moon Drum Circle)

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14TH   7:00-9:00PM

Held monthly on the night of the full Moon
$10 'love offering'

This drum circle began in April 2008.
"We meet in a church, have a spiritually-flavored drum circle, and therefore have a zero
tolerance drug and alcohol scene.  We create a safe space for all to enjoy.  We know that
drumming on its own creates a healing, natural vibration, which opens up the 7 chakrs,
making them receptive to the healing vibrational therapy administered by Jude and Carlos
through their use of Native American frame drums, shamanic-influenced medicinal drum
beats, and fragrant herbs.  We are successful in cleansing blocking toxins by opening these
7 chakras.
All musical instruments are welcome, as are all rhythms for our interactive heal-
ing musical experience.  The vitality dervied from our vibrational therapy can be felt for up to
72 hours after your first 2-hour experience.  This is divinely powerful; don't miss it!"
Bring beach chairs or cushions to sit on.

Coordinated by:
Carlos Manuel Planas and Jude Byrne.

2. Miami Beach Full Moon Drum Circle

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14TH   AFTER 9:00PM TILL AROUND 1:00AM

Held monthly on the night of the full Moon
Free

Held at:
"The public announcements for the Full Moon Eve and Full Moon Night drum circles were
stopped because the rave or wild beach party atmosphere that had developed, including
large numbers of young people and alcohol/drugs, drew the attention of the local authori-
ties, and caused arrests and closing of some drum circles by the police."  "This does not
mean that the drum circles have stopped. They are just not being publicly advertised.
People are getting in touch with each other directly and going out to drum at various differ-
ent places on Miami Beach on the full Moon eve, the full Moon night, and even the new
Moon night."  "Sometimes we use the open discussion site [listed below] to coordinate, but
mostly we just call each other by phone."

For the most up-to-date info on where they plan to gather this month, go to the website/
discussion group below, or contact Mark Richards or any other Miami area drummer that
is 'in the loop'.

On that website - over the months, 75th St., 79th/80th St., and 85th/86th St. (all at Collins/
A1A) are the most commonly mentioned locations for this drum circle.  79th St. has been
most discussed in the past few months.

August discussions:

1. "On August 16th we have the full Moon party at the beach.  Mixed reviews about the
last couple of months.  If you go, have in mind [that] drinking is prohibited at the beach,
and that [the] beach patrol likes to shut down everything around 1 am.  If you're serious
about drumming, the best thing is to go early in the night." - Mark Richards

2. "Drumming and dancing on the beach at 79th St. this month.  Let's try out this location.
It seems very quiet and away from the lights of the city.  Friday starts around 8:30pm.
Saturday starts later..."
- Gene Shapiro

3. One reviewer wrote about the July event: "75th St. started out as an intimate affair, but
became a very pleasant and large beach party by around 10:30pm, with Manny & his tim-
bales arriving about that time to entertain the crowd of spectators.  People have reported
that the very best drumming and dancing took place very late - after midnight..."

4. Another reviewer wrote about July: "I thought the whole point of the drum circle was for
everyone to par
ticipate in celebrating the full Moon?  When the group with the large tim-
bales (and bells
and whistles) arrived, the whole ambiance changed, especially when the
crowds of peo
ple with drinks and flashing cameras arrived shortly after.  It was anything
but pleasant.
I looked around at those near me with djembes, and we clearly felt left out...
The timbales
gang was there to entertain the crowds."

5. Yet another reviewer wrote me: "I went to both 75th & 79th Street on Saturday night.
75th St. was the teen party - very big, young, and the typical weekend party-crowd.
There were police cars parked outside, but I did not see them enter the circle and it was
going strong and loud when I left at 2am.
79th St. was the 'real thing' - attended and organized by the real drum circle crew.  It was
a more mature crowd, mellower, much better.  More hand-drums than drum-stix, although
there was a time where the drum-sticker was there and dominated.  If I could do it all over
again, I would have gone to 79th and not 75th."

September discussions:

1. "Last cycle (August), went like this:  I arrived around midnight at 75th [on the] night
before the full Moon, where we were the month before [July].  No one around but you
could easily see the Rhythms at 79th.  Thought they may have been at 85th.  When I
passed 79th you could tell by the cars where everyone was at.  Stayed till bout 3:00am;
good players, good time, no show of force.  Trash was overflow'n in the two trash cans
on the beach and the rest that wasn't piled next to them was scattered all over, which
included many glass bottles, some broken.

Night of the full Moon I again checked 75th at midnight, where I found the Rhythms this
time.  Manny and some of the stick players at one big circle and two more smaller circles
a short distance south down to the Band Shell at 73rd.  Same good energy, same problem
with the trash and glass, same no show of force.

If you're the first to set up and can play loud enough so everyone can find the rhythms
there's a good chance that the spot you picked will be the one for the this cycle.

I prefer 75th cuz of the close parking lot.  79th is good too.  Just walk to the end of the
street and out to the beach.  85th was constantly have'n issues with a regular show of
force [police presence].  I think there's still a few that still go and hang there.  Problem
with 85th was traspass'n through the park and some condo comandos complaning maybe.
And the trash. Don't know for sure.

No bottles on the beach.  Cans, plastic work just fine.  First time some mother's child has
to get stitches guess who's gonna pay.  Take your trash out with you.  Don't even leave it
in the beach trash cans.  LEAVE NO TRACE!!!!  If we show some respect, they might decide
not to show some force.  I think we all know all the other stuff that's not allowed on the public
beach at that spot so I don't need to go there." - RhythmAnarchy

2. "I'm going for 79th. I think the best circles are those with some space in the middle for
dance'n and spinning [like Siesta Key near Sarasota]. So I will have my trash buckets to
mark a circle. And I will fill them with trash and take them with me when I go.  If I trust
someone enough that they may even help me with this journey, I'll consider a loan of a
sacred virgin white trash bucket. (I'm not gonna [just] pass out a roll of garbage bags
and expect everyone to get the message.) Maybe, once again, the FSM will bless the
circle." - RhythmAnarchy

3. "[The full Moon eve] I arrived bout 9-10pm.  Everything was very good.  Beach protrol
hung with us till their shift ended [around midnight].  No one tried anyone's limit, so no
fire [was attempted].  But, there was an hour between midnight and 1:00am, before the
MPD [Miami Police Dept.] arrived, [where] we had no chaperon.  Could have been a
window for the 'children' to play with some fire.  We were asked to leave at 1:00am.
Packed up cleaned up; left NO TRACE.  Very good night.  Wonder if we circled up right
in front of the resorts on 74th, if 'mom and dad' would let us stay up a little later?

I'll make it a bit earlier tonight [full Moon night].  I'm expecting our chaperons to ask
us to leave at 1:00am." - RhythmAnarchy

4. "...since we are gonna be at the beach I would like to encourage everyone to get crea-
tive on the ocean, mermaid, merman theme...or at least wear white, blues, ocean tones...
so we can have even more harmony.  The full Moon is actually on the 15th, but we always
meet the night before as well as the actual night of the full Moon.  So start getting creative
and come celebrate with us.  Bring your bathing suit if you would like to swim and renew
your soul in ocean foam.   Sunday, September 14, 2008 at 9:00pm.  Location: the beach
street: 79th St. and Collins, Miami Beach, FL." - Beatriz

July discussions:

One drummer reported: "In July, Happy circled the 75th St. circle with the Hare Krishnas...
Some thought that the mobile PA system that the Hare Krishnas brought was a little inap-
propriate.
People have reported that the very best drumming and dancing took place very
late - after midnight...

4. Moonchine Full Moon Party (with Drum Circle)

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14TH   8:00PM ONWARD

Held monthly on the night of the full Moon
Free

Inside: sushi, drink specials, kareoke
Outside: drum circle around the fire on the back patio

Held at:
Moonchine Asian Bistro, 7100 Biscayne Blvd., Miami FL

One experienced drummer reported about his experience in July 2008:
"The Moonchine...was a little disappointing.  We got there around 8pm.  There was no
real space for drummers.  The 'fire-pit' was in a little outside alcove where the outside
bar was.  There was room for maybe 5 or 6 drummers, and it was obvious that the wait-
staff would be barging through all the time to fill their bar orders.  And then, of course,
there were the DJs ('nuff said).  We had dinner (which was very good), but we didn't even
unpack our drums.  Now, that said, the space was very pleasant for dining, and had the
potential to be good for a drum jam (but maybe not around the 'fire pit')..."
There may have been drumming later in the evening, but this reviewer left and thus
couldn't comment.

3. DRUM CIRCLE OPPORTUNITIES
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This month there at least 74 opportunities to drum/dance in our SE Florida area -
from Miami-Dade (11 events), through Broward (35 events), Palm Beach (24 events),
and Martin (4 events) Counties!

• Some repeat weekly, or monthly, or on the full or new Moons, and some are special one-time
   events
• Some are outdoors (parks, beaches, backyards...) and some are indoors (homes, businesses,
   churches, bars, arenas...)
• Some are in the daytime and some are at night
• Some are hidden away & private and some are public & almost exhibitionistic
• Some are eclectic world-beat improv/jam sessions and some focus on more repetitive trance-
drumming, or on drumming from just one cultural tradition (African, Latin, Middle-Eastern,
   Native American, etc.)
• Some have bonfires, some have candles, some have the Sun or the Moon
• Some have entertainers (fire-twirlers, fire-breathers, poi-spinners, etc.)
• Some are strongly-led, some are mildly guided, and some are leaderless
• Some are flavored by a particular spiritual tradition (Pagan, Christian, Native American, Yogic/
Vedic, etc.) and some are free of any mention of any beliefs (politics, religion, etc.)
• Most are clothed, but one weekly drum circle is hosted by a clothing-optional (nudist) community
• Some have lessons before-hand and some don't
• Some attract only a handful of participants and some draw 100 or even 400+ drummers/dancers!

Try out a few drum circles and find the style(s) and vibes that you enjoy.
