Jupiter Beach Full Moon Drum Circle (Juno Beach)

FRIDAY, JANUARY 9TH   8PM-1AM
The night BEFORE the full Moon

According to Bob, coordinator of the Jupiter Beach Florida Drum Circle group on Yahoo: "The
reason we're doing the Jupiter Beach Drum Circle on Friday, January 9th, is to avoid the
schedule conflict with the Beat Bombers' event at Open Grass from 6 to 8pm on Saturday, and
'cause Joe said he'd support our event on Friday.  The moon will be adequately bright, and the
full moon's psi effects have a three day duration.  (The day prior you get that 'energy building'
feeling.)"

Held monthly on the night of the full Moon (or the night before, if it conflicts with their Thursday
night gig at Cruzan Rum Bar, or any other profession gig).
Free

HOSTED BY
Joe & Jay (http://www.myspace.com/beatbombers, http://soulcyphermusic.com),

Palm Beach County Full Moon Drum Circle (Lake Worth Beach)

SATURDAY, JANUARY 10TH, 8PM-MIDNIGHT

Held monthly on the night of the full Moon
Free (except for parking meters)

"These past months we've been having 100-150 people show up.  One month recently we had
over a dozen fire-spinners - what a sight!  This is wonderful 'tribal' celebration, with
drummers,
dancers, fire-performers, and quiet on-lookers.  People remark that it's
the perfect confluence
of the 5 elements - soft sand underfoot (Earth/smell), gently-lapping waves (water/taste), full
Moon reflecting the Sun (fire/sight), soft ocean breezes (air/touch), and enchanting rhythms (space/hearing).  One reviewer said: 'This is sub-tropical South Florida at its finest.'  Please
come join us - don't miss this gathering!" - Michael Goodman, event coordinator

(a) The park officially closes at midnight, but this is loosely enforced by the Lake Worth

park is closed, please pack up & leave quickly, so that we continue to be welcome there.

(b) This event happens rain or shine; in case of rain, or if it gets too windy on the beach, we
drum/dance under the huge picnic shelter (pavilion) in the same park, 100 yds. west of the
beach - you drive past it on your left 100 yds. after you enter the park.  It's well-protected
by a hill from the ocean wind.

(c) Remember, it can be chilly and/or windy on the beach during the cooler months -
      dress accordingly.

Randy says:
"The Original Fort Lauderdale Drum Circle in a class by itself"
"World Famous 'Original Fort Lauderdale Drum Circle' as seen on Channel 7 News and
wrote [sic] about in the Sun-Sentinel Newspaper"

[Of course its NOT the 'original Ft. Lauderdale drum circle'.  Randy started this drum cir-
cle in 2007. There have been drum circles in Ft. Lauderdale for decades, some having even
used the name "Ft. Lauderdale Drum Circle". - editor.]

"A drum circle is a group of people coming together to create in-the-moment music using hand
drums and percussion instruments.  A drum circle is not a percussion ensemble performing a pre-
pared piece of music, or a drumming class led by a teacher, nor any group that is re-creating mu-
sic that it has played before.  Drum circles are a form of recreational music-making, which means
that the focus is not on performance but rather on personal, group development, reducing stress,
\dance, meeting people, relaxing, wellness, or just plain fun."

2. NO FACILITATOR (OPEN DRUM CIRCLE, PLAY WHAT YOU WANT, EVERYTHING GOES)
3. BEGINNERS TO ADVANCED

[In theorty, this is a list for discussion of, and announcements about, this weekly drum circle.
I'd suggest scanning through a sampling of posts before subscribing, to see if you want to
wade through all the 'static' to get the occasional relevant announcement.  This list has been
in operation for 11 months and has attracted 16 subscribers other than Randy and I. - editor]

Held at:
Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, 3109 E. Sunrise Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale FL, in the Pavilion 3 area.
954-468-2791, 954-564-4521,

3. Cross the Intercoastal Waterway bridge
4. Make the last left turn before A1A - turning into the Hugh Taylor Birch Park entrance
5. Follow the circular drive about 2/3 of the way around to the "Primitive Camp Area"
6. Park as directed by the parking attendant

[Editor's note: Be careful - the leader of this drum circle tends toward huge hyperbole/exagera-
tion.  Even worse, he has publicly expressed his paranoia that 'the Pagans drummers' are out
to 'get him', and has written very bigoted e-mails and very hostile, libelous, threatening e-mails
to drum circle discussion groups across Florida.  Please check out his writings on both of these:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fortlauderdaledrumcircle  - and -
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/floridadrumcircles/  Search for Randy's e-mail ("fortlauderdaledrumcircle@...").  Or search for "destronw@..." which is either
a supporter of Randy's or perhaps another of Randy's own e-mail personas.
  Please read his
words for yourself and use your own good judgement before becoming involved in his events.

Chakra Cleansing Full Moon Drum Circle
(Used to be called Unity on the Bay - Full Moon Drum Circle)

SATURDAY, JANUARY 10TH   7:00-9:00PM

Held monthly on the night of the full Moon
$10 'love offering'

This drum circle began in April 2008.
"We meet in a church, have a spiritually-flavored drum circle, and therefore have a zero tole-
rance drug and alcohol scene.  We create a safe space for all to enjoy.  We know that  drum-
ming on its own creates a healing, natural vibration, which opens up the 7 chakrs, making them receptive to the healing vibrational therapy administered by Jude and Carlos through their use
of Native American frame drums, shamanic-influenced medicinal drum beats, & fragrant herbs.
We are successful in cleansing blocking toxins by opening these 7 chakras.
  All musical instru-
ments are welcome, as are all rhythms for our interactive healing musical experience.  The vi-
tality derived from our vibrational therapy can be felt for up to 72 hours after your first 2-hour
experience.  This is divinely powerful; don't miss it!"  Bring beach chairs or cushions to sit on.

Coordinated by:
Carlos Manuel Planas and Jude Byrne.

Carlos: 305-331-1025, carlosdrums@...; Jude: 305-812-5473,

Miami Beach Full Moon Drum Circle

SATURDAY, JANUARY 10TH   AFTER 9:00PM TILL AROUND 1:00AM

Held monthly on the night of the full Moon
Free

Held at:
"The public announcements for the Full Moon Eve & Full Moon Night drum circles were stopped
because the rave or wild beach party atmosphere that had developed, including large numbers of
young people and alcohol/drugs, drew the attention of the local authorities, and caused ar- rests
and closing of some drum circles by the police."  "This does not mean that the drum cir- cles
have stopped. They are just not being publicly advertised.  People are getting in touch with each
other directly and going out to drum at various different places on Miami Beach on the full Moon
eve, the full Moon night, and even the new Moon night."  "Sometimes we use the open discussion
site [listed below] to coordinate, but mostly we just call each other by phone."

For the most up-to-date info on where they plan to gather this month, go to the website/discus-
sion group below, or contact Mark Richards or any other Miami drummer that is 'in the loop'.

[On that website - over the months, 75th St., 79th/80th St., and 85th/86th St. (all at Collins/A1A)
are the most commonly mentioned locations for this drum circle.  79th St. has been most discus-
sed in the past few months. - Editor]

SUNDAY, JANUARY 11TH   TIME UNKNOWN
On the night AFTER the full Moon

I invite drummers and photographers out to demonstrate both new firedancing
gear and
some high-tech electronic LED toys... It may not be exactly the full Moon, but it's a
Sunday, which will bring less hangers-on and fewer
police, leaving us with a much longer time
to drum and dance.  Peace."

Moonchine Full Moon Party (with Drum Circle)

SATURDAY, JANUARY 10TH   8:00PM ONWARD

Held monthly on the night of the full Moon
Free

Inside: sushi, drink specials, kareoke
Outside: drum circle around the fire on the back patio

Held at:
Moonchine Asian Bistro, 7100 Biscayne Blvd., Miami FL

One experienced drummer reported about his experience in July 2008:
"The Moonchine...was a little disappointing.  We got there around 8pm.  There was no real space
for drummers.  The 'fire-pit' was in a little outside alcove where the outside bar was.  There was
room for maybe 5 or 6 drummers, and it was obvious that the wait-staff would be barging through
all the time to fill their bar orders.  And then, of course, there were the DJs ('nuff said).  We had
dinner (which was very good), but we didn't even unpack our drums.  Now, that said, the space
was very pleasant for dining, and had the potential to be good for a drum jam (but maybe not
around the 'fire pit')..."  [There may have been drumming later in the evening, but the reviewer
left and thus couldn't comment. - Editor]

Oak Grove Park Drum Circle

SUNDAY, JANUARY 11TH   4:00-6:00PM

Held every Sunday
Free

"Has a distinctly Haitian flavor - come ready to pick up some sweet island grooves.  There are
more good (really good) drummers than there are drums, so bring extras if you have them.
There is some seating - but you may want to bring your own.  There is a great playground for
kids." - Mark Richards

"The atmosphere is one of acceptance and respect, with various different cultures and styles.
There is lots of listening as well as playing, and unexpected treasures rising to the surface.
This is one where the heart seems to take precedence over style or technique (although style
and technique are not lacking).  I'm also happy to say that the shaker/bell section, while not
totally non-existant, seems to be limited to those great souls who understand that there is no
grandstanding or 'soloing' with a bell or shaker - just the hard (and sometimes painful) work of
small, repetetive hand/arm movements that no listener will ever express open admiration for
and only the other drummers will ever appreciate (usually because they know how hard it is)." -
Mark Richards

Held at:
Oak Grove Park & Recreation Center, 690 NE 159th St., Miami FL, across the lake from the
parking lot.
Go north on NE 6th Ave. from 135th St.  It's at the intersection of NE 6th Ave. & NE
159th St.  It doesn't take place in exactly the same spot in the park each week, but it's not a big
place, so look around (look for Penny or Haiti Blues).

DRUM CIRCLE OPPORTUNITIES
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This month there at least 74 opportunities to drum/dance in our SE Florida area -
from Miami-Dade County (11 events), through Broward County (35 events), Palm Beach County (24 events), and Martin County (4 events)!

• Some repeat weekly, or monthly, or on the full or new Moons; some are one-time events
• Some are outdoors (parks, beaches, backyards...) and some are indoors (homes,
  businesses, churches, bars, arenas...)
• Some are in the daytime and some are at night
• Some are hidden away & private, & some are public & almost exhibitionistic
• Some are eclectic world-beat improv/jam sessions and some focus on more repetitive
trance-drumming, or on drumming from just one cultural tradition (African, Latin, Middle-
  Eastern, Native American, etc.)
• Some have bonfires, some have candles, some have the Sun or the Moon
• Some have entertainers (fire-twirlers, fire-breathers, poi-spinners, etc.)
• Some are strongly-led, some are mildly guided, and some are leaderless
• Some are flavored by a particular spiritual tradition (Pagan, Christian, Native American,
Yogic/Vedic, etc.) and some are free of any mention of any beliefs (politics, religion, etc.)
• Most are clothed, but 1 weekly circle is hosted by a clothing-optional (nudist) community
• Some have lessons before-hand and some don't
• Some attract only a handful of participants; some draw 100-500 drummers & dancers!

Try out a few drum circles - find the style(s) and vibes that you enjoy.
