Thanks for your generous and kind comments! I'm glad you enjoyed
my songs. These were an adventure for me writing, producing and
engineering, but a lot of fun!

*Yes there is a lot of effort in them, but it must be really satisfying now
you have them made... I'd be really proud if I could record music of mine of
such quality...

Your comments on how I need to mold my sound going forward are
right on the money. My plan is to differentiate on the production side,
but under no circumstance compromise the vocal harmonies or the use of
new and interesting chord changes.

*Too right, music with interesting chord changes is so damn rare...
everything you hear around is so predictable... there are very few artists
who can give you strong emotions through the chord progression, they're the
few who learnt the lesson of jazz... I've always thought at Steely Dan as
contemporary jazz in pop form...

As far as my own voice goes, it's
naturally a Donald tone, so I'll try to differentiate through expression
and style (not too much :-))

*Now this is a coincidence... you do Steely Dan-like music _and_ you have a
natural Fagen tone! :-)
It's OK, but I'd still try to have a different voice, even if that would
mean changing mine... maybe you can try a deeper tone... of course you can't
force yourself too much, and if that's your voice it's alright anyway...

Please pass the word on my sites. I'd like to get as much
feedback on my first five tunes as possible, so I can serve up something
special on the next ten!!

*I've added a link to your two pages (while we're at it, why don't you do a
site of your own?) on the Links page of my site... of course I'll be very
happy to review your album when it's released...

Hi

My name is Richie and I am a SteelyDan Fanatic. I am very happy to belong
here amongst other fans. I guess my favorite cd right now is Aja
I cannot think of anything else that has the same effect on me. Aja may be
jazz perhaps rock but to me it is part of my soul. Words cannot express
anything worthwhile to describe what it means to me. Anyone else here feel
the way I do?

Richie

Richie,
I don't know if its part of my soul, but Aja's perfection is
definitely surreal!!

I am a huge Dan Fan, and have written and produced some
original material very much in their style. I'm getting excellent
feedback, even from hardened Dan fans. Please check out
www.mp3.com/tom_larotonda and let me know what you think!!

Best regards,

Hi,

I can relate to the affinity for Aja. I don't have a favorite Steely CD, but
Aja is the one that converted me to Steely Dan. At the time it came out, I
was about 14 and listening to mostly hard rock, but when I heard Aja after
borrowing it from a neighbor, I became immediately hooked on them and had to
have all of their material ASAP. To this day, some 24 years later, Steely Dan
remains my most admired musical entity.

Also, I've turned several people onto Steely Dan over the years as I'm sure
many of you have. That always gives me a good feeling...

Regards,
Paul

*Of course. Katy Lied is probably my favourite, but they're all so
absolutely excellent. I especially adore the title track.
Up on the hill, they think I'm OK... or so they say...
(It's so touching...)
Aaaaajaa! When all my dime dancing is through, I run to you...
(It's so powerful...)
The final instrumental part is one of their best moments ever. I've heard it
hundreds of times and it still devastates me with its sheer beauty... I
always wonder how such a genius can ever be existed...

*I definitely recommend Tom's music. The only other musician (other than
Prefab Sprout's Paddy McAloon, which will release a solo instrumental album
soon) able to do such sophisticated and emotional music that you almost can
even dare to compare with Steely Dan.
Check also his streaming tracks on this page:
http://www.broadjam.com/artists/artistindex.asp?artistID=1181
Hey Tom, recorded you MP3s on CDR and could hear better the sound, also of
your voice. Well, it sounded much better on my stereo than from the speakers
of my computer, and I'd say there's stilla resemblance with Donald's, but
it's not so worrying as I thought (on my PC you sounded just the same), you
definitely have a tone of your own, so I think you can perfect this tone if
you want, but there's no such a need to radically change it...
I'd also be curious about your biography (one of the reasons you need a
site). You must have some kind of experience behind you to be able to write
this music and record it in such a professional way with so good session
musician and backing singers. What did you do before starting this singing
career? Did you have a band or did you write for other artists or did you
work as a studio producer or anything else?

Hi Richie! I can't think of anything that Steely Dan has done that I don't
love (except waiting so long between albums!) The album of my soul, though,
would have to be Countdown to Ecstasy. Superb rock n' roll.... Welcome :)

Hello Laura, Tom, Mick, Maxx, Guitarlover !

Thank You for the kind welcome to this wonderful list. I really appreciate
it. I am from San Diego and saw Dan a while back at Coors. I thought they
were fantastic and brilliant musicians as one would expect. I really enjoyed
it the way they talked to the audience. So relaxed, so hip/cool. It was
funny one of the comments was about how they have not played in San Diego in
a while. Then Becker says something like "since 1977" and that tour was with
Jeff Beck. *sigh*
Missed that one.

The other comment that cracked me up was when Fagan was talking about some
"crappy-filler lyrics" that he has penned. He mentioned the song Kid
Charlemagne (sorry spelling) and that the song was about an LSD drug dealer
. He admitted that the lyric in that song : "Is there gas in the car, yes
there is gas in the car" was pretty weak. LOL It was so funny...

One more thing, When I was driving home after the show , 2 huge custom buses
roared by me . I saw Fagan reading a book with a small lamp light on near
the rear of the bus. It was the only window that was open and he was into
this book to the max. I always wondered what he was reading, I guess I will
never know. I just thought I would share these bits with you guys, no matter
how trivial they are.

The ONLY complaint that I had about that show was that it was NOT LOUD
ENOUGH. I was bummed about that because I could hear people talking during
the set and it was distracting. Oh Well....

Your Friend,

Richie

Becker tells a semi-hilarious story on the VH1 Storytellers cut of Kid
Charlemagne about this line and a conversation with a cab driver he had once.
Anyone ever heard it? (The track is a pretty cool rendition of "Kid" too.)

Hi,

I recall that part of the show. If I remember correctly, Walter in transit
mentions to the cabbie that he is recording a session as a member of Steely
Dan and the cab driver says something like, "Oh yeah, you guys are good but I
always thought that the line, 'Is there gas in the car?... Yes, there's gas
in the car' was a stupid lyric". Apparently, Walter got a big kick out of
that comment as he has a good sense of humor. I personally like that
particular lyric and in my own strange perspective it does sound good
juxtaposed to, 'I think the people down the hall know who we are.' There are
so many great things about 'Kid Charlemagne' and I consider it to be an
exemplary showcase of Larry Carlton's guitar wizardry.

Regards,
Paul

Well, I feel like a rank outsider here as I'm a relatively new fan
(what can I have been thinking of!). I bought the digital remastered
The Best Of CD and then Citizen Steely Dan and Nightfly. Hooked isn't
the word, I'm almost unable to listen to anything else at the moment!

So I just wanted to say hello and that I'm so glad that there's a
place that I can go to to rave about SD without boring my partner or
friends.

All the best

Hi Rob & List,

I think that I have made a mistake about this point, regarding that lyric it
was part of the "VH1 Story Tellers" and probably not mentioned during the 2
Against Nature Tour. My memory might be a bit fuzzy but the other statements
are true. Does anyone know who the cute Black Woman back-up vocalist that
sang "Dirty Work" is? She is fantastic and I would like to hear more about
Her.

I always thought Peter Gabriel & Frank Zappa had the corner of the best
musicians in the studio/tour. So far I have recently learned that Joe
Sample, Wayne Shorter, Larry Carlton, Jeff Baxter, Mark Knopfler, David
Sanborn and many others that I do not know have recorded with SD.

Blown away,

Richie

When you list SD guitar players, don't forget Elliott Randall, who did
solos on Reelin' in the Years, Green Ear Rings, Throw Back the Little
Ones, and provided more subtle tracks for many other SD tunes!!

Richie - 'Dirty Work' singer on last tour was (at least in London) cynthia
calhoun who has site at cynthiacalhoun.com - but surprisingly doesn't
mention the dan in her bio!! It was, however, a tremendous version of a
great song so let's hope it turns up on a live CD sometime!

Yeah, all three sang when I saw them too - and on the PBS concert special - but
I also remember the black girl being really good, especially on the verse she
got to sing of "Pretzel Logic."
One of the white girls is married to the guy who plays guitar (or was a couple
years ago during the tour) - their last name is Leonhart, or something close to
that. I'll be interested to look up Cynthia Calhoun. Late.

you're referring to carolyn leonhart - i believe she's sister of the
trumpet player, michael, from that tour, but don't believe she was/is
married http://www.carolynleonhart.com/ for more info

huge Dan Fan here....also, I have a question for the group. Can
someone tell me who is doing lead vocals on "Dirty Work" from "Can't
Buy A Thrill"?? That sure doesnt sound like Donald Fagen. In fact it
sounds like Patrick from the Doobies (who I know shared members with
early Steely Dan).

Thanks James,

It was Cynthia Calhoun. The name stands out as the one I believe who sang
the entire song.

Richie

Palmer sings the vocals for at least one other song and that album too.
Definitely Brooklyn. . . Midnight Cruiser too?, or is that some other cat?
Piece - impressive Leonhart knowledge. Lovely to hear she's still available.

That was David Palmer on Dirty Work and Brooklyn. The lead vocals on
Midnight Cruiser are courtesy of the late Jim Hodder (who also sang
on the Steely Dan track "Dallas").
