Re: [Styxbook] Exclusive interview with Dennis DeYoung
I agree with you 100 percent. First Time really showcased Dennis' voice, and he sang it beautifully, but it would have been a mistake as far as what would have happened to the bands reputation. They did NOT need to release 2 soft ballads in a row. I think it would have been a top 20 and added a few hundred thousand sales to Cornerstone, but I really think it would have hurt them in the long run.
Babe was hard enough for me to swallow after the greatness of Grand Illusion and Peices of Eight.

As always it's a matter of opinion, but I personally don't believe First TIme WOULD have been a top 10 hit. At the time Cornerstone came out, I may not have been a huge fan of Babe but I totally "got" that it would be a hit, and why. I didn't feel that way about First TIme - I thought then, and still do, that it had some flaws. I was (still am) a huge fan going back to 1975, but I used to periodically skip that song when I'd play Cornerstone. And at the time I think I was pretty representative of the average radio listener.
I also believe that had First Time been released as the next single, Styx would have been moved mentally into the more "easy listening" genre by the public and the industry, and it would have been difficult for them to move back to anything resembling rock. They'd have become Christopher Cross.

I agree with Sconnors; "Why Me?" was the official creed of my life in the early '80s. I always liked "Queen of Spades"! I never knew why they didn't release...

"First Time" isn't alone. A lot of mega-hit potential ballads in the '80s were not released as singles, I guess because the artists were very concerned about...
I don't think the band Chicago was concerned about losing thier rock image! But good point. There were some ballads that didn't get released for that reason....

Well, they might not have had soft LOVE ballads per se, but there were very light melodic-based songs on each and every Styx album from the first one on. I...
