Brief note from Marti:
We forgot to tell Jane that she couldn't eat during the week... she
missed getting back into the hall - with BOTH computers - for the
first quartet of this session... and now, back to your regular
reporter, Laurie.
Quartet members are listed tenor, lead, bari, bass.
Key: Regional Champions (RC), Wild Cards (WC), Returning Qualifiers
(RQ), ## = queen; first region number listed is the one in which the
quartet qualified; @ means a member of SING who has outed herself
15...Southern Yankees (#14) - RC
.....Debbie Jennings, Lorrie Mauney, June Rich, Loretta Brafford
.....Queen Charlotte, CAL
Stage Attire: Long black sequined gown with short sleeves and a
scalloped jeweled neck.
Song #1: Here am I Broken Hearted. The entered from stage left,
which I've never seen before. I really like the bass in this
quartet. She lays a solid foundation for the other three
Song #2: Moment I Saw Your Eyes. This quartet has the potential to
be really good. I like the lead's voice especially (well, that's who
we hear the most, isn't it!) The bari plays to the audience and the
pit on her fun stuff at the end of the song!
16. Rhythmix (#25) - RC
.....Carol Ater, Pam Lauffer, Debbie Farrell, Janice Purpura
.....Rich-Tone
Stage Attire: Silver swing jacket and silver top on empire waisted
long black velvet dress.
Song #1: I Didn't Want to Fall. Very tight unit. Big sound with
lots of fun in their expression on this song. Their experience
shows. What a fun rendition.
Song #2: If You Love Me, Really Love Me. I love it when I can't
tell who's singing which part in a quartet, and I can't tell which is
the tenor and bari in this quartet they have that tight of a unit.
Excellent job from this many time competitor.
17...Diamond Jazz (#16) - RQ
.....Molly Rowland@, Kristin Stevens@, Paula Allen@, Vanessa Patterson@
.....Buffalo Gateway, Greater Kingston, CAL
Stage Attire: Spaghetti straps on navy longdress. It's very
flattering on all of them.
Song #1: Jazz Me Blues. Hello Nashville, we are Diamond Jazz! They
make this song their own.
Song #2: May I Never Love Again. They have a great sound, rich and
pingy. Chords a-poppping! Very nice job. I think they'll make the
cut again this year.
18...Salt (#32) - RQ
.....Anna Ohman##, Annika Andersson, Anna-Stina Asplund, Susanna Gran
.....Ronninge Show, Stockholm City
Another Swedish quartet and a true crowd favorite.
Stage Attire: Black pants suits with gold shell and a black scarf at the neck.
Song #1: Jazz Baby. They set a sultry tempo. I love the sexy
nature of this quartet. They have so much fun with the audience and
we eat it all up! What an entertaining rendition of this song. I'll
be anxious to see their expression and showmanship scores.
Song #2: The Masquerade is Over. And now they prove they can sing
well too. So much hinges on how a quartet sells, and these women are
masters of it! I have them firmly in the top group.
19...The Mod Quad (#1) - WC
.....Kim Mullins, Anne Benowitz, Lynda Kupson@ and Karen Sweeters
.....Yankeemaid
Stage Attire: Black Asian looking duster jacket with frog closures over pants
Song #1: I Didn't Want to Fall. These gals have a very big sound
and they're not afraid of it!
Song #2: Oh How I Miss You Tonight. They use an intro none of us at
the reporter table have heard. Heartfelt delivery. Nice job for
their first international competition.
20...Proposition 4 (#11) - WC
.....Tove Hoch, Deborah Hill, Sue Matus, Jackie Wheatley
.....Santa Monica, Verdugo Hills, CAL
Stage Attire: Emerald Green tea length dress with sequined bodice and sleeves.
Song #1: My Buddy. Beautifully delivered. What is it about this
ballad that makes it so engrossing? I loved their tag.
Song #2: You'd Better Keep Babying Baby. They have a lot of fun
with this uptune. The tenor even shrugs at the audience as her
quartet mates leave her hanging-ha!
21...Heatwave (#9) - RC
.....Chelsea Young, Janeen Summey, Denise de la Cal, Kim Elger-Griffin
.....Women of Note, CAL
Stage Attire: Black skirt and jacket with skirted waist. Silver
sparkles on collar.
Song #1: Redhead. What a great sound! They are ringing chords all
over the place. They just won the audience on this song.
Song #2: Secrets. This quartet is really good. If they don't make
the cut, they're going to be awfully close. They have an impressive
clean sound. You'll be hearing from them.
22...Reckon So (#23) - RC
.....Sherry Lewis, Jennifer Cooke, Robin Williams, Marcy Cunningham
.....TuneTown Show
Home town favorites...they get a huge ovation from the crowd.
Stage Attire: Hot red slinky duster vest over pants and top. Silver broach.
Song #1: Jazz Baby. They sing a different arrangement than we've
heard and they have a lot of fun with it.
Song #2: What'll I Do? The ring the heck out of the final chord and
enjoy, once again, the adulation of their hometown crowd. They did a
fine job for first timers. I'll bet we'll be hearing from them in
the future.
23...T.N.T. (#19) - RC
.....Debbie Sanders, Linda Beaver, Tancey Bosna, Sandy Martin
.....Ringing Hills, CAL
Stage Attire: Orange silk pants and top with orange patterned jacket
Song #1: Red Hot Momma/Gotta see Momma Every Night. They take a few
liberties with the lyrics to the delight of the audience. I really
like the sound of this quartet. I remember them from last year, and
they have improved by leaps and bounds.
Song #2: Just a Song At Twilight. Very clean. They have a
traditional barbershop sound, and I really appreciate it. Admirable
performance.
24...Hot Topic (#24, #13) - RC
.....Beth Smith@, Karla Callaway, Marlys Nelson, Mindi Brizendine
.....Pride of Portland, Hood River Valley, Pacific Sound
This quartet has two entire choruses here to cheer them on. Both
Pride of Portland and Pacific Sound are competing this week.
Stage Attire: Hot pink chiffon duster over pants and top.
Song #1: Mamma's Gone Goodbye/I Used to Love You. Good humor in
their lyrics. What fun.
Song #2: If I Give My Heart to You. Very nice job. If you close
your eyes, all you have to do is listen to the story they're telling
with this song. I was transported. Thanks guys!
25...Neon Lights (#12, #11) - WC
.....Julie Baxter, Karen Fish, Dede Nibler, Wendy Gibson
.....Mission Valley, CAL, Prospective Voices Unlimited, Pacific Empire
Stage Attire: Off the shoulder black bodice with long black skirt.
Song #1: Dixie One-Step. Dede has fun with a little something extra
on the tag and the crowd loves it. Well done.
Song #2: Last Night Was the End of the World. Another impressive
showing. Wow. There are a ton of really good quartets in this
competition. Neon Lights is right up there.
26...Musicality (#2) - RC
.....Staci Slamka, Diane Catellane, Dodie La Marte, Kathy Green
.....Spirit of Detroit, Shoreline Sound
For all the guys out there, yes, Staci is one of THOSE Slamkas!
Stage Attire: Black velvet long dresses with feathers on the off the
shoulder neck line.
Song #1: Two Tickets/Sentimental Gentleman. Woo-hoo! They end
really strong with a screaming tag. This is such a fun arrangement
and they sing it so well.
Song #2: If I Give My Heart to You. They do a great job with a
demanding dynamic plan. Such lovely softs. Another awesome quartet.
They are in the top group.
27...Brava! (#26) - RQ
Last year's second place quartet certainly has a lot of crowd
support. I can't imagine the pressure of coming in being the
"favorites". MY stomach hurts for them right now! The Canadian
flags are waving all over the arena.
.....Sandy Robinson@, Lynn Gerard, Elaine Cotton, Shannon Harris@
.....Lions Gate, Green Heart, CAL, Westcoast Harmony
Stage Attire: Long duster jackets over a mini dress. (From finals last year.)
Song #1: Toot Toot Tootsie. Okay, my tummy feels better now,
They're on! Chords are ringing and they end with a great tag.
Song #2: Kiss Me One More Time. They're proving that last year was
no fluke. Wow. They're clean as a whistle. And my money's on them
to make the finals.
