Quartet members are listed tenor, lead, bari, bass.
Key: Regional Champions (RC), Wild Cards (WC), Returning Qualifiers
(RQ), ## = queen; first region number listed is the one in which the
quartet qualified; @ means a member of SING who has outed herself
Patty Warren is the MC for this session.
28...Crystal Clear (#9) - RQ
.....Melissa Carmack, Chris Kirkman, Susie Safarian@, Tabby Miller
.....Song of Atlanta, Toast of Tampa Show
This quartet was disappointed to not make the finals last year, as
were their legion of fans. The buzz is that they're ready to attack
the stage in Nashville.
Stage Attire: Emerald Green velvet gowns with a princess neckline
lined with silver trim. They look smashing!
Song #1: Piano Roll Blues. The swipe in the middle of the song is
the most exciting we've heard today and the crowd shows their
appreciation with mid-song whoops and hollers! They have a huge
sound.
Song #2: Oh How I Miss You Tonight/When I Lost You. They know how
to energize their phrase endings. I really like the blending of
these two songs and the tag is a beautiful one. If they don't make
the cut this year, they're going to be awfully close.
Trivia: For those who don't know, Chris Kirkman is married to Drew,
tenor of Michigan Jake. She is also the sister of Tony DeRosa,
baritone of Keepsake and Platinum.
29...Surefire (#22) - WC
.....Maripat Hanson, Nancy Charles, Barb Hyder, Pat Wozniak
.....CAL
Stage Attire: White fringed short dresses with an a-symmetrical hemline.
Song #1: Kiss Me One More Time. This quartet has a very bright
sound and they handle the ballad with confidence.
Song #2: Oh, You Beautiful Doll. They're hamming it up on the
stomp. The bass nails her hanger and they ring the final chord.
Nice job!
30...Spotlight (#2) - RQ
One of last year's finalists, Spotlight is looking to improve on
their 8th place finish. They have a new tenor this year.
.....Kendra LaPointe, LeAnn Hazlett##, Sue Snow##, Patti Britz
.....Shoreline Sound, Spirit of Detroit, Water Wonderland, CAL
Stage Attire: black slinky pants and top with a swing jacket with sequins.
Song #1: If We Can't be Sweethearts. Good heavens, LeAnn Hazlett
has a set of pipes! I don't think there's a lead that can match the
power in her voice. Masterful.
Song #2: Swanee. They set the mood during the intro then start
building the tempo. They should be a shoo-in for the finals. Does
that make my count five or six now? :-)
31...Zing! (#7, #25) - RC
.....Michelle Duncan, Susan Ives##@, LaDonna Cheatham, Melynnie Williams
.....Sunflower Harmony, Kansas City, Valley Center, Oklahoma Jubilee
Stage Attire: Turquoise duster jacket over pants and top.
Song #1: Take Another Guess. As they build toward the tag we hear
the power in the quartet. There is a ton of potential here.
Song #2: Crying Myself to Sleep. Once again, when they hit the
climax of the song, the strength of this quartet is evident. If they
don't make the cut this year, I'm willing to bet that they'll do it
soon. It's great to see Susan Ives competing again.
32...Ambush (#32) - RC
More Swedes! The flags are waving and we're hearing Swedish chants
from the second right behind us.
.....Ann-Louise Svensson, Eva Stahl, Karin Sjoblom, Erica Forsgren
.....Ronninge Show
Stage Attire: Black pin-stripped suits with a white collar and
silver shell. What? A Swedish quartet and not a blond in the bunch!
Tee-hee.
Song #1: The Girl I Used to Be. Beautifully delivered by this young
quartet. They turn around and open up their jackets on the applause
and launch into...
Song #2: I was Born 17 Years Too Late. This song laments the fact
that these girls missed the great age of disco! (Poor things!) The
suits with the big collars make sense now. Although they are not yet
as polished as the other Swedish quartets, I KNOW that these gals
will be back. They were very entertaining, and they SING so well.
What's in the drinking water over there anyway?
33...InJoy! (#16) - RC
.....Nancy Faddegon, Susann McKinley, Marianne Shoen, Pam Hyde
.....North Metro, Capitaland, CAL
Stage Attire: Black velvet gown with a sheet neck and sleeves.
Song #1: Jazz Baby.
Song #2: I Never Meant to Fall in Love. What a shame. The tenor
was obviously struggling with her voice throughout both songs, but on
this one it seemed to fail her. Her voice was cutting in and out and
the sound that did come out was not always accurate. It was not
evident visually at all, so good for her for carrying through. That
is a sign of a real pro. I've heard this quartet before and they
will be back. They are much better than this performance would lead
you to believe.
34...Contagious (#22, #5) - RC
Another quartet that scored an astronomical score in regional
competition. It doesn't hurt that Donna and Maureen are queens! I'm
looking forward to hearing them.
.....Donna Bates##, Maureen Brzinski##, DeAnne Haugen, Cathie Zimmerman@
.....Crosstown Harmony, River City Sound
Stage Attire: Black sparkly jacket/shirt and solid skirt.
Song #1: I'm Singing Your Love Songs to Somebody Else. A solid
comfortable sound, dare I say "mellow?" Oh man, they just made the
hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
Song #2: Piano Roll Blues. The experience level of the quartet pays
off in this song. They have so much confidence up there. And what a
sound! They're in!
35...Charisma (#9) - WC
.....Susan Courtice, Denise Helbig, Janette Redkey, Tonya Frizzell
.....Harmony Harbor, CAL
Stage Attire: Black pants and shell with a lacy sheer jacket.
Song #1: Moment I Saw Those Eyes. They have a lot of fun with this
popular up-tune. (Who wouldn't it's great! Thanks, Joe Liles.)
Song #2: All the World and Its Gold. They're ringing a lot of
chords, and you can tell that they believe the message of this song.
36...Act IV (#12, #24) - WC
Lots of folks thought Act IV should have made the cut last year.
I've heard they're anxious to prove themselves this time out.
.....Debi Thomas, Joyce Wheeler, Kathy Davi, Kim Chadwick
.....Pacific Empire, CAL
Stage Attire: Wine colored gown with four different necklines.
Song #1: Joint is Jumping. Huge sound. They're ringing chords all
over the place. They definitely have the crowd on their side.
Song #2: Crying Myself to Sleep. They had me involved for the whole
song. What a great story. Man this is a tough contest. I think I'm
up to eight and we have a couple of really good quartets yet to come.
I'm in big trouble. Good thing I'm not a judge.
37...Perfect Timing (#35)
Marti here - Laurie finally has to visit the necessary.... Looking
forward to this one, David!
.....Patti Cooke, Toni Griffin, Sharon Wilkins, Virginia Humphrey-Taylor
.....Christchurch City, Greater Auckland
Stage Attire: Long duster in a pink sparkly over brown fabric worn
with a brown blouse and pants.
Song #1: I Love to Hear That Old Barbershop Style - They sound quite
"American" - I was talking to a Waikato Rivertone about their
difficulty learning our vowels and such. What a bass that Virginia
lays down! This song seems to be a favorite of theirs and now,, ours.
Song #2: My Buddy. Their sound is so smooth - like "buttah!" I
could listen to this for hours. Wonderful hushed tag!
HEY! I'm back. Get over yourself, Marti. Thanks, I needed that.
For those of you who've never sat through all 52 international
quartets, this is killer.
38...ConTempo (#21) - RQ
There is huge crowd support for this quartet.
.....Monique Manifold, Janice Blake, Debbie Lewis, Karen Meade
.....San Diego, Scottsdale, Tucson Goodtime
Stage Attire: They look magnificent in a black and white sleeveless
top and a long skirt. Each sequined top has a slight variation in
the black and white design.
Song #1: Joint is Jumping. They connect really well with the
audience. Great phrase endings.
Song #2: Mardi Gras. What a pretty song, and they sing it
beautifully. They are part of the top group today.
39...Northern Lights (#20) - RC
.....Mindy Jurgensen, Lorrie Nonneman, Judy Weipert, Marcia Klingbeil
.....Spirit of Harmony
Stage Attire: Red fringed flapper outfits.
Song #1: Lulu's Back in Town. The lead vamps it up during the stomp
and they're having a ball.
Song #2: If You Love Me, Really Love Me. (Obviously a popular song
today. I think we have a cappella Gold to thank for this!) They are
intent on the message of this song. It was a heartfelt delivery.
40...Portfolio (#21) - WC
.....Wendi Young, Christina Robertson, Claudia Thornhill, Donna Graham##
.....Harborlites, CAL, Enchanted Mesa Show, O.K. City
Stage Attire: Long chiffon gown with jacket and beaded accents.
Song #1: Lulu's Back in Town. Strong voices in this wildcard
quartet. Cute interp. They seem to be comfortable up there and
they're having fun! The nail the tag. What a good quartet.
Song #2: My Mother's Eyes. They are very solid and clean with many
ringing chords. I'm impressed.
41...Cadenza (#34) - RC
The Aussies are chanting, "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oy Oy Oy!" This
quartet from down-under has also been adopted by region 4 this year
since they don't have a representative in the contest.
.....Gaynor Pollard, Beverley Walters@, Robyn McCluggage@, Kerrie Studdert
.....Endeavour Harmony
Stage Attire: Cute tea length dresses with sheer jacket and sparkly top.
Song #1: If I Loved You (from Carousel). A heartfelt delivery of
this favorite show tune.
Song #2: I Love Jazz/Take Me to the Land of Jazz. Fun swing tempo
on the second song. They finish strong with a ringing tag. Way to
go Bev!
