Emcee: Ellen Gallacher
Key: WC = wild card; ## = queen
SING competitors who have "outed" themselves to Lisa Hills (thanks,
Lisa!) are listed with each contestant. We know there are lots more
who just lurk.
12...Ramapo Valley, #15 - 65 on stage
.....Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, USA
......Director: Renee Craig##
Stage Attire: Royal blue iridescent princess dress with rhinestone
sunburst sparkle at the neckline and wrists. Turquoise slip.
Song #1: At the County Fair (?) - one of their great dance numbers -
Renee just poses a bit - very little direction! The chorus is
smaller than we are accustomed to seeing, but I sure don't notice any
lack of sound, enthusiasm or showmanship!
Song #2: Have I Stayed Too Long at the Fair? - Pretty "ballad" with
a nice dance interlude and a simple "oooo" tag that just gave me the
chills. This is such a fine chorus - they always have something
different and wonderful to share!
13...Lincolnaire, #20 (now in #7) - 63 on stage
.....Lincoln, Nebraska, USA
.....Director: Karen Koch
SING competitors:
Stage Attire: Royal blue dress in sparkly fabric with white sequin
accent at neckline!
Song #1: You're Breaking in a New Heart While You're Breaking Mine -
don't believe I've heard this ballad before and they do a nice job of
telling the story.
Song #2: It's a Sin to Tell a Lie - Bass hanger on the intro belies
their relatively small numbers. Cute choreo and a fun twist on the
tag... "If you break my heart, I'll die...." which is normally the
end, but NO! "One of us is gonna die.... YOU'RE gonna die!"
14...Grand Rapids, #3 - 88 on stage
.....Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA
.....Director: Ann Jarchow
Stage Attire: Pants is three colors (red, orange, yellow); top has a
one-shoulder effect in red sequin fabric and a slanted hem.
Song #1: Here Am I, Brokenhearted - this different arrangement has
an interlude with more story - I like it! The chorus tells the story
very well.
Song #2: Nobody Knows What a Red Hot Mama Can Do/You Gotta See Mama
Medley - they sizzle! At the song change yellow feathered fans come
out and are used to great effect. This is a fun, sexy and flirty
presentation of the medley.
15...Gateway, #26 - 69 on stage
.....Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
.....Director: Marlene Greenough
Stage Attire: Black circle skirt; top is part gold and part copper
with sequin trim on the diagonal. Marlene's dress is black sequin
fabric with a sequin pattern on the back that is shot with turquoise.
Song #1: Crying Myself to Sleep - heartfelt delivery. This chorus
hasn't been to international since 1990 and has 39 singers who are
first-timers on the international stage, 10 at their first
competition of any kind.
Song #2: Runnin' Wild - skirts are torn off the front row to reveal
short pants - cute! Lots of attitude on this one. "Ain't got
noboooooooody....WHATever!"
16...Song of Atlanta, #23 - 139 on stage
.....Roswell, Georgia, USA
.....Director: Becki Hine
SING competitor: Tammy Stuck
Stage Attire: Dark gold sheer duster over long sleeve burgundy top
and pants of velvet.
Song #1: There Goes My Heart - this chorus is improving in leaps and
bounds! The finesse, huge louds and tender softs are very well
suited to the song and exciting for us listeners. They have us in
their palms at the tag.
Song #2: Them There Eyes/How Many Hearts - this is the year for
choruses to lie on the floor! You've got to see this choreography to
believe it. We think they might be finished and they hit us with one
more, even fuller, chord!! WOW! Lots of audience members are on
their feet!! This is a contender!!!
17...Greater Cleveland, #17 - 76 on stage
.....Independence, Ohio, USA
.....Director: Jean Flinn
SING competitors: Shirley Brown; Dawn Livingstone; Jean Flinn; Robin
Richards; Bonnie Vaidean; JoAnn Wilson
Stage Attire: Iridescent dark red pants; jacket has a red paisley figure.
Song #1: How's Ev'ry Little Thing in Dixie - these gals are having
the most fun at their first international - such energy!
Song #2: My Daddy is Only a Picture - they really tell this story,
becoming the little boy at times. The quiet tag is lovely. Jean
arranged this song for them. They will be back!
18...Sunflower Harmony, #7 - 47 on stage
.....Topeka, Kansas, USA
.....Director: Susan Ives##
SING competitor: Susan Ives
Stage Attire: Gold beaded scarf collar over black pantsuit with long top.
Song #1: Red, Red Robin - there's a lot of sound from this small
group and they are having a great time with the adorable choreography.
Song #2: You Are My Sunshine - I really like this "new" arrangement
(it's been around for a few years) and they do it well.
19...Harbor City Music Company, #19 - 78 on stage
.....Baltimore, Maryland, USA
.....Director: Michael Gellert
SING competitor: Sharon Ehrisman
Stage Attire: Tea-length dress with black velvet bodice over
multi-colored sequin fabric circle skirt
Song #1: Here Am I, Brokenhearted - this chorus is really emoting
the message of this song. Some really good ringing chords here!
Song #2: Hard-Hearted Hannah - new intro, which I like. They can
vamp it up - playing off Michael - they didn't actually "torture and
kill him" did they? Red feather boas come out - sexy! "Travelin'
through Alaska in your BVD's" ----- OOOPS - this stole Michaal's
pants and he has on boxers with red kisses on them!! Whew!!! The
temperature's rising!
20...Crosstown Harmony, #22 - 70 on stage
.....Elm Grove, Wisconsin, USA
.....Donna Bates##
SING competitors: Heather Johnston; Bonnie Senkowski; Cathie Zimmerman
Stage Attire: Teal dress with window pane checked sequin bodice in
green and blue, scarf hem.
Song #1: Angry/Bill Bailey Medley - they have lots of attitude! I
love how these songs are turned into something more modern than was
probably intended by the composer... in terms of the attitude!
Song #2: Band Stand in Central Park - there is some good
story-telling going on here. I'm believing them!
21...Harborlites, #21 WC - 100 on stage
.....Anaheim, California, USA
.....Director: Pam Pieson##
SING competitors: Judy Parks; Marsha Ross
Stage Attire: Black velvet circle skirt with long sleeve pink/gold
beaded/sequin top with gold beaded fringe
Song #1: Crying Myself to Sleep - what a full, warm sound! They
catch me up in the story, even though I've heard it a bunch.
Song #2: Robert E. Lee - they use their skirts to great advantage,
flashing us some sparkly garters. People are on the floor again.
Pam gets to play, too as the chorus does most of the work. This
chorus should be in the finals! (I wonder if they suggested the wild
card rule...??)
22...Houston Horizon, #10 - 98 on stage
.....Houston, Texas, USA
.....Director: Vickie Dennis
SING competitor: Kathy Parker
Stage Attire: black velvet palazzo pants and shell with overlay of
velvet lace, rhinestone accents at the neck and shoulders - white
beaded brooch at neck.
Song #1: I Didn't Want to Fall - five front row members have bridal
veils and floral bouquets appear for the five "bridal parties." Very
cute staging... the bouquets are thrown, too. Lots of energy!
Song #2: Here Am I, Brokenhearted - of course, I am prejudiced,
but I really like their delivery of this song. The "brides" remove
their veils at the appropriate point.
