Emcee: Dorothy Jurs
Key: WC = wild card; ## = queen
SING competitors who have "outed" themselves to Lisa Hills (thanks,
Lisa!) are listed with each contestant. We know there are lots more
who just lurk.
23...Greater Richmond, #14 - 57 on stage
.....Richmond, Virginia, USA
.....Director: Dixie Dahlke##
SING competitors: Diane Becken; Anita McLarin; Michelle Scott; Heather Webb
Stage Attire: Red dress with dual hem and gold accents
Song #1: All Dressed Up with a Broken Heart - more sound than the
number of people would indicate. Nice interpretation of this ballad.
Song #2: Red, Red Robin - once again, the director lets the chorus
do the work for most of this song. Cool moves on the "stomp" part!
24...Capital City, #4 WC - 105 on stage
.....Indianapolis, Indiana, USA
.....Directors: Bev Miller & Molly Huffman
SING competitors: Sally Kirby; Ann McAlexander; Jan Meyer; Shari
Morey; Jen Pugh; Cathy Robinette; Donna J. Smith; Kathy Smith
Stage Attire: Yellow quilted knee-length jacket over black pants
Song #1: Original Dixie One-Step (Bev directs) - these gals must
have special finger-snapping practices! It's about time we got to
see this group!! What fun! They are so excited to bring this
package to us.
Song #2: Oh, How I Miss You Tonight (Molly directs) - Lots of energy
in the delivery of this fine ballad. The tag is beautiful.
25...Pacific Sound, #13 - 130 on stage
.....Merced Island, Washington, USA
.....Director: Carole Kirkpatrick
SING competitors: Anna Chamberlain; Teresa McCafferty; Laurie
O'Brien; Beth Smith
Stage Attire: Black and white striped pants, white satin shirt,
black jacket with black eyelash lapels, big hot pink flower,
spectator shoes, pink socks
Song #1: When I Lost You - beautiful rendition of this ballad -
another of my favorites.
Song #2: Robert E. Lee - lots of leaping choreography (in a good
way) and now there are people on the floor again. The energy just
rolls off the stage! Frankly, I find it good to see so many judges
up there working hard at performing for a change. Our Laurie did
good, but her hand was in front of her face for the final pose... see
Jane's photo.
26...Gem City, #4 - 122 on stage
.....Dayton, Ohio, USA
.....Director: Jean Barford##
SING competitors: Donna Gewertz; Phyllis "phyl" Quast
Stage Attire: Black velvet gown with pink and green sequin trim at
the neck. Jean's gown has a striped effect in the colored sequins on
the back.
Song #1: Daddy, You Never Told Me - I've never heard this one either
and I really got caught up in the story.
Song #2: Roll On, Mississippi - the originator of the massive sound
- they've still got it. For the "stomp" the front row kept passing
through itself... hard to explain!
27...Canadian Showtime, #16 WC - 102 on stage
.....Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
.....Director: Sandra Nason
SING competitor: Nicole Wieczorek
Stage Attire: Green dress with bolero type jacket, pink and silver
trim. Sandra's dress is mostly pink with a scarf hem.
Song #1: If I Give My Heart to You - another first time competitor,
they are delivering this beautiful song with lots of feeling. The
tenor hanger is a killer and it was just lovely.
Song #2: Last of the Red Hot Mamas/Nobody Knows What a Red Hot Mama
Can Do/You Gotta See Mama - showing off the pink lining of their
jackets to great effect, they dance up a storm with flirty and sexy
moves.
28...City of Lakes, #6 - 97 on stage
.....Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
.....Director: Brent Graham
SING competitor: Mandi Strelow Burch
Stage Attire: Black sparkle fabric dress with silver draped neckline
Song #1: All Aboard for Dixie - I could swear they sang this whole
song in one breath. Whew! I'm exhausted. They did the pass through
thing with the front row, too - I like it.
Song #2: Last Night was the End of the World - this is a much
different arrangement of the old standard. They deliver it with
finesse. Killer tag.
29...Great Lakes, #2 - 79 on stage
.....Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA
.....Director: Lee Davison##
Stage Attire: Purple satin dress with gold sequin fabric shoulders
and sequin fringe trim in blue.
Song #1: Will It Be Me This Time - This experienced competitor knows
how to sing a ballad - they tell the story with great energy.
Song #2: That's Entertainment - they have a blast with this - lots
of quick visual jokes and "bits" - there is so much going on, it's
hard to see it all... oh, my goodness! ANOTHER pair of boxer shorts
- this time it's Lee who loses her skirt!!
30...Skyline, #8 - 145 on stage
.....Littleton, Colorado, USA
.....Director: Vickie Maybury
SING competitors: Sally Davidson; Marie Reynolds
Stage Attire: Red velvet dresses with feathers around the neckline
and silver sparkle added.
Song #1: Red Hot Mama Medley - the staging and choreography makes it
seem like the first time we're hearing this song today - wow!
Song #2: If You Love Me, Really Love Me - Powerful performance!
Even though we're getting sick of this song, we love this rendition
of it.
31...Aberdeen, #31 - 47 on stage
.....Aberdeen, Scotland
.....Director: Gwen Topp
Stage Attire: Pink princess dress with lighter pink inserts in the
skirt, petal sleeves, worn with large rhinestone necklaces
Song #1: Sweet Adeline - once again I am going to rave on about how
well they are doing at sounding American - I know it must be terribly
difficult for them... speaking the same words, but differently.
Their sound is very solid as well. Of course, the crowd loves this
song!
Song #2: Back in the Old Routine - A sweet performance of this crowd
favorite, complete with soft shoe - nice job!
32...Scottsdale, #21 - 133 on stage (we had to move our table while counting)
.....Scottsdale, Arizona, USA
.....Director: Lori Lyford
SING competitors: Lauren Altiere; Lynda Parish
Stage Attire: Deep teal blue velvet circle skirt, teal and black
sparkly top with sweetheart neckline and absract pattern
Song #1: If You Love Me, Really Love Me - they make the song new for
us with choreographed moves in the middle. Of course, the singing is
incredibly good as well.
Song #2: Original Dixie One-Step - they have finger-snapping and
clapping and thigh slapping rehearsals!! The energy exuded by this
chorus makes me tired. WOW. Oops - at the end, Lori's skirt flew up
a bit higher than she probably expected when she jumped... the
audience reaction is priceless. This one's a keeper. Of course, by
now I have definitely eliminated exactly no one from my "cut."
33...Channelaire, #11 - 113
.....Camarillo, California, USA
.....Director: Bobbette Gantz
SING competitors: Barbara Albert; Debbie Curtis; Bron Latta; Wini
Sell; Carol Sundeen
Stage Attire: Purple pants, purple sequin fabric duster vest, purple
shell with bright pink sleeves and fringy trim on one shoulder
Song #1: Nobody Knows What a Red Head Mama Can Do - their intro
tells us, if we've sat through 64 songs, surely we can take two more.
Bobbette is the Red Head Mama and they play off her very well. Lots
of energy here!
Song #2: From the First Hello - they handle the sentimental nature
of this song with great skill. A warm, rich sound. Goosebump
raising tag!
Before the order of appearance for the finals is announced, we are to
be treated to a performance by San Diego, last year's champions.
They are wearing black velvet pants and a gold sparkle fabric
slant-bottomed top with fringe at the lower edge.
South Rampart Street Parade - a drum corps is in the audience and
going to the stage! Four rows on the floor do the trombone move...
then the 15 young people of the drum form a front row. Of course,
they are drowning out the chorus, but what a show! As a tribute to
the chorus directors, who all come on stage, come one by one to the
center and take their bows as the audience applauds steadily. All
the while, the chorus is singing "The Power of the Dream." With the
help of the drums, they begin the "Stars and Stripes Forever"
complete with flags and marchers. The flags are red, white and blue,
but not the US flag - helping make the song apply to all countries
that value freedom. The drums add a beat as ribbon wavers join the
flag wavers. Quite a production number ... ending with the American
flag at the center and streamers!
Kim says they've had a wonderful year - she recommends winning!
Thanks are given to Cindy Hansen for the visual and all musical stuff
belongs to Joni Bescos. Joni directs the last song, "The Curtain
Falls."
