While we wait for this weekend's regional results so we can specular on things like chorus wild cards for Seattle, quartet wild cards for Nashville, and Harmony Classic contestants for Seattle, let's start thinking about NASHVILLE!

These stats have been complied over many years from my own files and with help from Jan Seales, the stat queen, but once in a while mistakes do creep in - please shoot me a PRIVATE email with any corrections that are needed.

REMINDER: All of these "charts" are bext viewed with a fixed width
font.  If you are reading on the web, you can choose it by clicking
on "show message option" and then choosing "use fixed width font" -
but of course, you have to choose it for each message.

Not official in any way, but strictly for your entertainment, here are
the five highest scoring choruses from all Regions, ranked.

If you are drawing your own conclusions, REMEMBER - wild card choruses
for Seattle are the five highest scoring SECOND PLACE choruses (after
all choruses have competed) who accept the invitation .... this is
different from the quartet rule.

I am assuming that accepting a wild card for the international chorus contest takes a midsize or small chorus out of "the pool" for that same year's Harmony Classic.

REMINDER: All of these "charts" are bext viewed with a fixed width font.  If you are reading on the web, you can choose it by clicking on "show message option" and then choosing "use fixed width font" - but of course, you have to choose it for each message.

Not official in any way, but strictly for your entertainment, here are the five highest scoring quartets from each Region, ranked.  Probable wild cards are marked with ## after their quartet name.

Since I took the penalty column out a while ago, I've marked the quartets having penalties by putting some * symbols by their total score.  The notes about the penalty amounts are at the bottom of the chart.

***PLEASE*** READ all the notes before perusing the list!

Please note the list includes only the small choruses *winning small chorus awards* from all Regions.  Small = 15-30 on stage.  Due to the minimum score requirement (400 pts), some regions may not have three award winners.

# to the right of the chorus' name indicates the chorus is qualified for and participating in the 2009 Harmony Classic in Nashville and therefore will NOT be eligible to be invited for 2010 (Seattle).  The 2nd place small chorus in those regions is "in the pool" for the Harmony Classic but
still must qualify by score.

Remember the first five choruses to be invited to Harmony Classic 2010 must be 1st Place in the Division (with the exception noted above) and they must ACCEPT the invitation to be included.  Since the Harmony Classic is now held on a Tuesday, it may be more difficult for some choruses to accept the invitation, but you may draw your own conclusions as to which choruses will be the first invited.  Should a chorus decline, the next qualifying eligible chorus will be invited, and so on until five participants accept.

This list proves the advisability of waiting until all regions have competed!

Draws for order of appearance for Harmony Classic will be done at the August 20-21 meeting of the Education Direction Committee in Tulsa, and will be announced shortly thereafter.

***PLEASE*** READ all the notes before perusing the list!

REMINDER: All of these "charts" are bext viewed with a fixed width font.  If you are reading on the web, you can choose it by clicking on "show message option" and then choosing "use fixed width font" - but, of course, you have to choose it for each message.  When I'm looking at it in my incoming email, I can choose "rich text (html format)" in my email software and it shows it to me the way I intended it to look.

This list includes ONLY the midsize choruses *winning midsize chorus awards* from all Regions.  Because of the size  (31-60 singing members) and score (400 points minimum) requirements, some regions may not have three award winners.  In fact, this year, Region 35 had no midsize choruses in their competition at all.

# to the right of the chorus name indicates the chorus is qualified for
and participating in the 2009 Harmony Classic and therefore will NOT be
invited for 2010.  The 2nd place chorus in those regions is in the pool
for the Harmony Classic but still must qualify by score.  I confess I
am a bit relieved that Centennial Blend placed second in the midsize
division since they are qualified for and participating in the 2009
SMALL chorus division of the Harmony Classic!

Choruses used to be limited to a 10% increase in size between their qualifying win and their participation at Harmony Classic, but that rule has changed:

Division A (small) choruses may compete at Harmony Classic with up to 40 singing members, and Division AA (midsize) choruses may have as many as 75 singing members on stage at Harmony Classic.

PLEASE NOTE:  This does NOT change the size ranges for these awards at regional competitions, only how much growth they can bring to the Harmony Classic stage!

Also, ## indicates the chorus is the regional champion this year - should they qualify for "the pool" by score, they will have to choose between competing at International Chorus Competition and competing at Harmony Classic in Seattle in 2010.  I am assuming that a chorus who qualifies as a wild card the international chorus competition will not be eligible for Harmony Classic unless they choose HC over the other opportunity.

*****We have it on good authority that Gateway will be competing on the international stage in 2010.*****  ;-)

Remember the first five choruses to be invited to Harmony Classic 2010 must be 1st Place in the Division (with the exception noted above) and they must ACCEPT the invitation to be included.  The exception does not apply to Hickory Tree (maybe time for a rule change?) and they are not "in the pool" this year, in spite of their fine score.

Draws for order of appearance for Harmony Classic will be done at the August 20-21 meeting of the Education Direction Committee in Tulsa, and will be announced shortly thereafter.

For a start, let's remind everyone how they qualified to be here. This
chart is best viewed with a fixed width font.

Division A (Small)
==============================================================
Cont..Chorus Name......Reg..#onstage..'08...'09..Previous HC

Onstage numbers, which include the director(s), follow the location in
parentheses, and may not be absolutely correct as it's hard to count moving
targets. It should be noted that rules changed for this Harmony Classic.
To be specific, from the
Competition Handbook:

"Division A choruses competing in Harmony Classic may compete with as
many as forty (40) singing members on stage. Division AA choruses
competing in Harmony Classic may compete with as many as seventy-five
(75) singing members on stage. There is no change in the number of
competing members on stage during regional qualifications."

Songs which are judged are marked with **

In the WITCH PIPE, the headline is "Witches Go to Nashville!" Listen well,
those who dare to audition tonight...
"Witchy Woman" is very mysterious and spooky... especially since they keep
saying witch-ay woman!
The head witch (director) is in a bad mood... because of a man, of course.

amateurs.
"Hard-Hearted Hannah"**
I'm having trouble following the next "spell" but it results in all of the
witches being...
"Happy Together"

.2..Texas Harmony #10
....Irving, Texas (31)
....Darlene Rogers
Black Pants suit with silver trim
"How Many Hearts Have You Broken"**
"At Last"**
After a Texas howdy to "all y'all" - they take us along on their trip to New
York City to sing in Carnegie Hall!
"Broadway Baby" - in the middle their ripped off the black shell to reveal a
silver sequin fabric shell
"I Can't Give You Anything But Love/Steppin' Out"
Before they left NYC, they visited Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty and
Ground Zero...
"America the Beautiful/Let Freedom Ring" ends with a counter melody version
of the two songs.

.3..Millennium Magic #1
....Manchester, Connecticut (21)
....Laurel Stielkauskas (although they don't actually do not use a director)
We've decided they are zombies... or ghouls... or something creepy, with
black pants and shirts - the shirts have been shredded in front with a
bright color showing through.
"It's All a Facade" - ???
One of the zombies is afraid her love won't understand once he learns she's
a ... zombie!
"If I Give My Heart to You"** I love seeing a chorus sing a ballad with no
director!
How romantic - isn't he just to die for! Remember when I told you I was
different... well, I'm out of this world different... apparently he did NOT
understand - he hung up on her! She's in a "grave" situation.
"Changes/After You've Gone Medley"** Nobody wants you when you're all
decayed... you'll miss the dearest ghoul you've ever had... They didn't
really have to change many words - the zombia choreography took care of it.
They put on long capes with mummy wraps hanging from them...
"Thriller" - Sorry, I just watched in awe! The authentic MJ choreography
was stunning down to the silver glove at the end!

.4..The Blend #8
....Fort Collins, Colorado (33)
....Julie Palagi
Teal pants, top is iridescent dark teal which seems to change to lime or
purple, with sheer sleeves and slanted hem
"Yes, Sir, He's My Baby"**
Colorado has an abundance of natural wonders (the chorus members) but lack
air... "do y'all chew your air here in Nashville?" Like their sister small
choruses, they've learned to do a lot with a little..
"Old Songs, Old Friends"**
Lack of air leads to odd behavior which explains Boulder, Colorado...home of
tie-dye wedding gowns, naked bike riders and Judge Extraordinaire Sharon
Babb.
"Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing"
A sudden storm on a summer afternoon can be beautiful, leaving a fresh smell
in the air and the sun comes out.
"Colorado Rocky Mountain High" features a quartet spot and a brief solo by
Julie, ending with some snow-covered mountains! (Okay, they were white
scarves.

.5..Prairie Gold #26
....Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada
....Val Neison and Helen Olinik (34)
Black velvet pants; red velvet top has gold swirls, slanted hem and neckline
Sorry - I was correcting my entry for the director and didn't quite get the
intro... something about getting lost and GPS being no help at all.
"Alabama Jubilee/Alabama Bound"**
Mary Ann doesn't have a GPS - it's an iPod! Luckily, they can turn to the
more experience people in their lives for guidance.
"All the World and It's Gold"**
That song brings back memories of all the challenges... like my first
boyfriend, and then my 2nd boyfriend, and then my next boyfriend... okay,
okay - a new topic..home! The seasons of prairie ...
"When it's winter in Saskatchewan" ... and the gentle breezes blow... over
60 miles an hour... you can tell it's Saskatchewan cause the snow's up to
your butt... and your nostrils both freeze shut..." I can't keep up with
this "cool" song!
Our winter's are indescribable... kinda like my 1st boyfriend.
"You Raise Me Up"

End of Division A.

We shall return in "ten" minutes... with the Young Women in Harmony Festival
Chorus.

Directed by Nikki Blackmer and Melanie Wroe, the Young Women in Harmony
Festival:
They are wearing jeans abd bright colored shirts
"All My Lovin'" is dedicated to a "shrine" onstage to Moxie Ladies.
The spokesgirls have blonde wigs, making them all "Moxified." They spot the
quartet.... oh, never mind, it's just bunch of Swedes. Hope they show up,
before we're too ... old.
"When We're 24" -
A very cute routine about why haven't the Moxie Ladies come yet... trying to
find four blondes... "what color is that anyway?" and then four young
queens... old, old, w-a-a-a-a-a-y old.
"I Get By with a Little Help from My Friends" finally brings the Moxie
Ladies out on stage, at which point the girls scream like they are rock
stars!

.1..Metro Mix #5
....Iowa City, IA (50)
....Bev Hamilton
All are beauty contest winners in the evening gown competition, with their
banners reading "Miss-something" such as "Miss-taken" Miss-trial"
"Miss-tique" Miss-informed" etc. Bev is the "male" emcee, "Bert Sparks."
"Gee, But It's Good to Be Here"
It's the Miss-Cellaneous Pageant.. we've just had the no-way swimwear
contest and the you're no Ginger Rogers talent contest. Now the final four:
Miss-informed - sorry, I missed (groan) her speech; Miss-diagnosed ... jazz
is the answer for all your ills.
"Jazz Me Blues"**
"At Last"**
Miss-giving's life's passion is ... feral cats. A proper cat house must be
procured, but until then, her home will have to serve.
"Stray Cat Strut"
Miss-erable's life passion is HRT. That's HRTea... is it hot in here? She's
makes an herbal tea... it's prevent moodiness and irritability, too, she
says grumpily.
Miss-erable is Miss-cellaneous 2009! ("Don't even think about putting that
robe on me!)
"Ya Gotta Know" - short version

.2..Gateway #26
....Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (66)
....Marlene Greenough
As they come on stage, we can't help but notice that they all have wings...
we think they are angel's wings... and there's some without wings. The
costumes are red ... satin pants and velvet top with a satin spider webby
type of pattern and slanted hem. Turns out they are cupids!
"Auld Lang Syne" parody.. class 2009 of cupids!
At this graduation ceremony, let's review some of our studies... like
bringing together that lovely young couple.
"My Honey's Lovin' Arms"**
Stupid cupid (who is wearing Melodeers type "nerd" glasses)... looked up the
address for a singles club, when she got there it was a shingle company...
"There Goes My Heart"**
Various other tales... finally one says she used her arrows to bring women
to share harmony.
"Theme from Cheers"
The graduates of Cupid U are welcomed... because it's all about love.
"Love Train/People All over the World"

.3..Top of the Rock #25
....Litte Rock, Arkansas (55)
....Peggy Gram & Kelly Causey
All are Barbies in all of the various outfits Barbie has worn through the
years. I'm sorry I spent so much time enjoying the "red carpet" patter and
didn't get any of the jokes typed!
"Celebrate Good Times"
Our emcee for the evening has many accomplishments... she begins listing all
the things he's done and the chorus sings,
"It's Rainin' Ken"
She's still naming all his accomplishments when they finish.
50th Anniversary Barbie has just noticed how HOT Ken is..has he been right
there all along???
"At Last"**
A great big 50th birthday cake comes out...
"Oh, You Beautiful Doll" parody**... Fire - my cake's on fire... can I
retire?
What is most wonderful about the 50 years is the joy she's brought to little
girls... letting them know they can be whatever they want to be.
"Celebrate the Life"

.4..Scioto Valley #4
....Columbus, OH (69)
....Char Gurney & Kerry Denino
Black velvet dresses with hot pink petticoats
"Great Day" ... this is a more modern arrangement than I have heard
before... kinda jazzy, but it suits the song well.
Some kids lay some text-speak on Char, who says she thought BFF was big
french fries... but MTAN (chorus shoes... my toes are numb) and she
introduces as TJ.
"If We Can't Be Sweethearts, We'll Just be the Same Old Friends"**
"I Love Jazz/Land of Jazz"**
Next one is for all of us, the strongest, the smartest, the most talented
women in the world.
"I'm a Woman"

.5..Jacksonville Harmony #9
....Jacksonville, Florida (67)
....Ann Gooch
They are the pit crew for the "Harmony Classic 500" in blue coveralls with
checkered flag hankies
"Where Have My Old Friends Gone"**
The driver is "Annie Get Your Gun" Gooch.. the reporter has noticed a lot of
personnel changes. Good friends come and go all the time, but we just keep
on winning. We don't have any tricks- it's about a winning attitude.
"Step to the Rear"
The reporter asks if the crew is perturbed about not have the prized pole
position... probably not, says the crew chief.
"It's Not Where You Start, It's How You Finish"
The reporter feels the chief still hasn't come clean with the secret... no,
there are no gimmicks - it's all about the winning attitude!
"The Great Race"**

I think I shall let this fly and put the results in a separate message!

I am typing this in a fixed width font, so it will probably look better to
you in the same.  We are not going to try to count - the numbers will be on the official score sheets.  Let's all assume that they sound great.  I will try to tell you about what they do that you might miss on the web cast.

....Hamilton, New Zealand
....Barbara Smith
Stage Attire:  Black pants, red wrapped top has a black leaf design and silver trim
Song #1:  At Last
Song #2:  My Honey's Lovin' Arms - the whining vocal effect for a phrase was really cute and then they all squished to the center and laid over towards the middle to huddle up and cuddle up - very clever!

Jane wants you to know that the first quartet, Flirt!, had been uploaded to the photo page!!!  She will be working on the photos between contestants as she is able.

.2..Circular Keys  #34
....Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
....Vicki Dwyer
Stage Attire:  Black pants, top has black sheer sleeves and a slanted hem overlay of sheer fabric with pink and purple swirls of sequins

....Houston, Texas
....Vickie Dennis
Stage Attire:  Blue and turquoise two piece dress with scarf hem and glitter swirls
Song #1:  Roses of Yesterday
Song #2:  Ya Gotta Know How to Love- so sorry... home town chorus ... and I just watched!  Loved the choreography, which never seemed to stop, and Vickie didn't have to do much directing at all!

....Heather Johnston
Stage Attire:  Hot pink fringed dresses (five rows of foot long fringe) with one shoulder effect
Song #1:  I'm Alone Because I Love You
Song #2:  I Declare a Jazz Holiday (Dr. Jazz?) - fringe demands a lot of movement, and they are taking full advantage with flirty, sexy choreography!  (When I was in the St. Joe chorus, we wore fringe a lot... it's heavy and you're always picking at each other to keep it from being tangled, but it's SO much fun!)

.5..City Voices #5
....St. Louis, Missouri
....Jerilee Inghram
Stage Attire:  Cleaning ladies!
Song #1:  If You Love Me, Really Love Me Parody... My mop is here to stay... if my favorite broom should fall apart....   when at last your life on earth is through, maybe then a Power Vac will do...  we'll call Merry Maids and get a crew.   Never heard a love song to a mop before!

....Jean Barford*
Stage Attire:  Dress with pink and purple blended swirly sparkles on a black fabric, slanted hem has one row on long fringe

.8..Coastline Show #1
....Providence, Rhode Island
....Gail Jencik
Stage Attire:  Purple sparkle fabric pants; top is tie-dyed lighter purple with glittere trim and short fringe at the slanted hem
Song #1:  At Last - with a rhythm that allows for some dancing - cool!
Song #2:  Piano Roll Blues - what else can you call it but "Jencik choreography" - very showy and clever... and athletic, but there is no sacrifice of sound at all!

.9..Alba Show #32 - WITHDRAWN

10..Rich-Tone #25
....Richardson, Texas
....Dale Syverson*
Stage Attire:  Black pants, red top is of a tie-due fabric with a black neck insert, scarf hem and black sequin trims
Song #1:  I'll Always Be in Love With You - this ballad is brand new to me and holy cow!  I predict we'll be hearing this one a lot more in the years to come.
Song #2:  Yes, Sir, That's My Baby - I am totally exhausted after this one, and we have lots of choruses to come.  I need a nap!  It's always fun to watch Dale do her thing in the ripple moves across the chorus.  What a showman!

"Let's Get the Party Started" serves to, well, get the party started. Jim
does his thank yous and then invites us to go back to Hawaii... well, in
imagination.

"Time After Time"

"Ring Out the Bells in Dixieland"

Jim repeats the Theory Lesson about the Circle of 5ths while the chorus
changes their costumes on stage...

A short reprise of their international song, which I still don't remember
the name of, is sung while the directors all come on stage, and the
directors are also wearing the famous geek glasses! Jane got a shot of
Karen Leet next to Debbie Hite, which is the epitome of the "long and short"
of it for directors.

Now I am going to enjoy the rest of the theory lesson.

This is the reason one should attend the international convention instead of
(a) watching a web cast or (b) reading these silly reports! There's nothing
quite like being present for a package like this one!

OPENING SONGS:

"Let's Get the Party Started"
"Elmer's Tune"

Renee Porzel welcomes the crowd. They started their makeup checks at 6:15
this morning. Their mirrors were a little scared...

She gets up on the risers so the crowd can see her and the chorus gets down
on the floor for physical warm-ups! Someone asks Jim to stand up. "I am
standing," he says.

Renee almost fell off the risers watching the crowd do her warmups! She
says we are the only audience that can clap along to a song and not get
faster.

She asks for all the non-North American members to raise their hands, then
those who have a relative in their chorus, then members for one year or
less, then members from 11-20 years, then members for 30-50 years, then
members for over 50 years - all these groups are represented. Do you read
music? Have you switched parts since joining? Dual members? Drive from
another state to attend rehearsal? Have children or grandchildren?
Competed in a quartet? Competed in a quartet at international? Attending
or performing in your first membership class?

Theme: the common thread... it's all about the music

We are often asked how many rules and regulations we have... everything is
based on the music. Got rid of policies that take a lot of time and have
the rehearsal consist of things that members are concerned if they miss
them.

CPR - choosing personal responsibility.

Each member is in charge of her own membership, how much she wants to get
out of it and how much she wants to put into it. We have a lot healthy
positive peer pressure. For those who need help learning music or
choreography, help is available. If we are told to be off paper music in
two weeks - we are (or we lie)!

We don't use the web to provide learning tapes and such... we feel that, if
people know it's going to be available later, they won't concentrate as well
on learning it live. Many people tape things for themselves.

We want Jim to be teaching to the members who are at rehearsal.

Julie Kendrick:

A 40 year member, she is representing the old-timers. She joined to make
more friends in her neighborhood and do some singing. Her neighborhood is
now the world and she has five gold medals.

We don't have a lot of business at rehearsals (administrative stuff). She
remembers an early rehearsal with an hour of discussion on what color hat to
buy... we wonders why she returned!

We don't have attendance requirements. We found we were adjudicated
people's excuses. Jim has the time available at each rehearsal to bring
them along on the path to excellence, including the many lessons in music
theory. Members know that, if they miss a rehearsal, they are going to miss
something fun and important.

Jim Arns:

He's been asked to show how they achieve the common approach to vocal
production what allows them to sing "clean" and in tune.

It doesn't matter as much WHAT approach is used as long all singers are
using a common approach to vocal production.

POSTURE - a clarinet goes to rehearsal, it comes out of the case, the five
pieces are put together and it keeps it form throughout the rehearsal. It
doesn't bring worries or aches and pains along with it. The finest music
instrument has a human around it. Proper posture is essential.

BREATHE

PHONATE

RESONATE

"Living room" of sound is the interior of the mouth. The "bathroom" is like
the teeth (hard surfaces). We are always changing the shape of our
instrument as we use it.

Owl sound "ooooo" lives in the living room. Road kill "ewww" lives in the
bathroom. The best sound is in between.

TUNING

He begins some demonstrations of various ways to un-unify the sound... for
instance, some rows change the vowel ... it's kinda nasty compared to the
way they sound on the first time through. Even if just one row changes
their vowel! The biggest difference is the amount of resonance... unified
vowels expand the sound.

Learn the principles of unit approach, and they can be applied to every
single song, not just "contest" music.

Our ideal sound is somewhere in between the most resonance and the most
forward.

Renee Porzel:

We work on vocal skills constantly... we continue to work on posture,
breathing, resonance, etc., all the time.

Over the years we have learned there is more to it that just being really
loud.

The visual layer (the most important ;-) gets the audience to be a part of
the experience. We ask the singers to make up a story that personalizes the
lyrics to them and let it show on their faces. A couple of members relate
their stories for the "Love Letters" ballad. They've found this works
better than trying to come up with one story that works for everyoneone

If the members are involved in their story, the circumstances of the
performance become less important... for instance, it doesn't really matter
what kind of "stage" you have or whether the room gives good feedback or
none, as long as you are personally involved.

The chorus demonstrates some "on" and "off" singing - I'm seated far enough
away that I can't really see the faces, but I can definitely HEAR the
difference. The warmth goes away when the faces (and bodies) are off.

Years ago, we moved just to get the body moving. For a while we had that
heaving thing going - moving on every breath. Their demonstration of that
is hilarious. Then they take out only the body movement... keeping the
faces. The chorus finds it HARD. Putting it all back together produces the
fullest, rich sound.

Allison:

She joined two years ago, and has loved the Melodeers ever since she knew
what a Melodeer is.

We use a transactional model of communication - emotional delivery is added
to the notes and lyrics and then the visual delivery is added. All three
are needed to create the full communication with the audience.

Rehearsals are fun, action-packed, and there is never a dull moment.

Jim:

He asks each part to do it wrong, each in a different way. It still doesn't
sound BAD, but you hear individual voices in lead, not enough bass,
synchronization issues, etc... when he has them kick in within the unified
approach, the difference is radical. He asks Cori and Dawn to "make bass"
instead of taking the unit approach. It's amazing how just those voices two
destroy the unit! It sounds like a bass "melody" all of a sudden. Renee
asks just the baritones to over-emote. This really looks funny! Normally,
Renee asks the members to keep their personal hand movements below the
waist, which gives them a unified neighborhood. A few members with higher
hands are very distracting. Another factor is the connection of the sound.
Phrases need to ride on the air, not just words.

"Why Did I Choose You"

Donna Weinstock - Team Manager

Streamlined administration. It's all about the music. The Team meets about
once a month for about an hour. Circulate reports ahead of time on email,
questions and verifications are also handled beforehand so the meeting
itself can be all about decisions. If an expenditure helps the music, they
spend it. They try to earn money singing as much as they can. Dues are a
dollar a day. (No raise in four years.) They know they when they get to
rehearsal, they will enjoy the night, singing.

Jim:

INFLECTION - in speech, it's the rise and fall of pitch as well as the tone
of voice, so in singing the pitch variation possibility is absent, so other
methods must be used to add character to the sound.

The chorus sings a phrase with and the without inflection... it's still
"nice" without, but the addition of all the little details of inflection
raise the performance level several letters!

Renee has them small down the movements... they lose synchronization and
they are not having as much fun, so neither are we.

QUESTIONS:

How do you get rid of "S" sounds? Sing vowel to vowel. "Kiss Me one more
time..." - move the "s" to the beginning of "me," rather than the end of
"kiss." In an uptune, keeping the tempo helps put the sounds in the right
place. It's also essential to watch the director for unity on sounds like
that. Having only a few people sing the "s" is a copout - he doesn't
believe in it. It's hard to ask the singer to emote when they aren't
singing the whole word.

How do you bring new members up to speed? They throw them into the deep end
and they swim. The member will tape for themselves. Media are not provided
because the music changes too often.

What's the trick for those long hangers? In the chorus, although some of
the members can produce those long hangers with good vocal production, some
members can drop out and come back in - it takes a lot of practice. You
must exit on the same sound the chorus is making and come back in on the
same sound. (Can't turn the vowel early or finish with word when you take a
breath.) Sometimes one of their songs will have no "breath marks" for
several pages. Each member chooses her breathing pattern so the chorus
appears to sing continuously.

Music team? He has them all raise their hands - it's a big team. They meet
when they need to, and different groups within the team will meet at
different times.

Section rehearsals? Always on chorus night - many members drive more than
50 miles to get to rehearsal. They generally don't do double rehearsals
either. There are a few regional groups that may meet on their own time.
The members show up on Wednesdays because there MIGHT be a sectional and
there WILL be an arrangement change.

Front row? No outside rehearsals and YES, they sing. They are 20% of the
sound!

How do you qualify? Zero-Zero-Zero.... no errors in notes, no errors in
words, no error in breathing pattern. They tape themselves on the risers.
Listeners evaluate and let them know what needs to be fixed before the next
week. There is also visual qualifying. Jim's favorite time (not) - he says
his real favorite time is the week AFTER qualifications are done. Deadlines
are final so the members believe in them and do everything in their power to
qualify. Only for contest! Visual team sits out and watches four or five
at a time, the folks don't know which ones are being evaluated at any given
time. They get an written evaluation. It is NOT punitive - we all care
about the performance and know that one person who is not ready can affect
the whole chorus. All kinds of help is available to enable everyone who
wants to qualify to do so.

New members get a CD with the qualification songs (contest songs) and they
are introduced to their section leader, who points them to someone whom they
may record each week to get personal "learning" media.

There is more, but I was unable to keep up with the Q & A.

The Membership Class is one of the best features of the convention - come!

President Peggy opens the session and introduces Kate Veeder, Chair of the
Young Singers Foundation management committee. Kate speaks to the
importance of the Foundation and it's role in helping young singers to have
opportunities to express themselves through vocal music. She introduces the
president of the Christie Cookie Company, who presents a check to $1000 to
the Foundation (we had over 13,000 votes, and came in 4th place).

Then she introduces Elizabeth Dewhirst, one of our scholarship recipients,
who shares several numbers with the crowd. I don't know my Broadway shows,
so maybe some webcast listener can clue us in on the actual songs, but I'm
betting one is called "Gimme, Gimme."

We are very sorry you have been having trouble with the webcast, but we have
nothing to do with it and cannot help you, or fix it, or give messages to
people about it, or anything like that.

The songs which are adjudicated are marked with ** (in the case of the
mic-testers, they WOULD have been adjudicated)

Mic-testers:
....a.k.a., RC, #15.........................
Sue Taylor, Janeen Summey, Harriette Walters, Janell Paviolitis*
CAL (#9 & #15) Greater Nassau, Harbor City Music Co. (#19)
Stage Attire: Black leggings, short dress has a sheer skirt with big gold
dots and a black tie bodice
Song #1: The Happiest Sound in Town - this is a nice opener... Janeen
points to Janell when "we may be loud". Janell introduces Janeen who is
always amorous, Sue, who is always absent, Harriette, who is always
argumentative (what? who's argumentative?); and Janell herself, who is...
"annoying" - say the other three... she was going to say "awesome" ... they
are going to try to help Harriette with her cooking skills. Sue is Julia
Child, Janell is the table, Janeen assists and Harriette stands around in
her chef's hat holding a whisk and wooden spoon... this is a cute routine
that one needs to be present to enjoy!
Song #2: I'm Through with Love**
Song #3: Smile, Darn Ya Smile**
Song #4: I think it is called "A Prayer for Peace"

.1...Spritzer, RC, #16.......................
Karen Romanson, Susann McKinley, Hannah Barton, Sharon Knox
CAL, North Metro
Stage Attire: Black velvet "Greek goddess" gowns
Song #1: I've Got the World on a String - another great opener!
Song #2: My Romance**
Song #3: Yes, Sir, That's My Baby/Baby Face** - they've added an extra
intro and pass the hanger around on the tag, ending with the bari - WTG!
Song #4: God Bless The Broken Road that Led Me Straight to You - is my best
guess as to the title of this song, which they are singing in honor of being
in Nashville

.2...Razzcals, RQ-3rd, #12, #21, & #24.......
Dana Entrikin, Martha Segura, Cheri Jump, Mary Segura
Harborlites, Southern Oregon Sound, CAL
Stage Attire: Red cowboy boots, black jeans, brown suede jackets and white
shirts with big belt buckles on the decorative belt
Song #1: Rocky Top - wish you could see this routine... it's moving too
quickly for me to watch and type some of the stuff they are doing.
Dana says "Hi y'all" She's from the south, too... she's from southern
California! Razzcals has an advantage because they have competed in
Nashville seven times... Mary tells her that's not right... yeah, there I go
exaggerating again... it was 12 times. Mary: Where did you place? Martha
and Dana: Probably fourth...
Song #2: Flirty Eyes**
Song #3: If I Only Had a Brain** - how appropriate for the character that
Dana has played all these years that she has the melody on the tag
Razzcals has been together for 14 years, and even though Mary hasn't been
singing in the quartet all those years, she's always been a part of it. She
joined Sweet Adelines when she was eleven. She thanked the Young Singers
Foundation and everyone here for their support.
Song #4: Didn't We - beautiful!

.3...Mojo, RQ-6th, #13 & #26.................
Corinna Garriock, Julie Hagstrom, Elaine Cotton*, Judy Pozsgay
Lions Gate, Pacific Sound, CAL
Stage Attire: Like Wednesday but the skirt part is shades of green
Song #1: Baby Face**
They have done a study to find out what they need to do to crack the top
five. Four Bettys have that mother-daughter combination... SALT is four
tall gorgeous Swedes (Corinna, not so much on the tall)... the BUZZ were all
international champions (Mojo has one old queen). Julie knows! Judy says
the other three went to college but she didn't - how could she know? Julie
was valedictorian, and prom queen... not bad for home schooling
Song #2: The Churchbells Are Ringing For Mary**
Corinna has determined that all the champions are all fabulous singers.
Julie took guitar lessons this summer. Air guitar. They demo their voice
lessons. I'm going to watch now. Corinna's is something operatic, Elaine's
is Wimoweh, and Judy's is one of those bass "accompaniment" things!
Song #3: Stuck in the Middle with You starts off with some air guitar in
four parts. Didn't know you sing air guitar, did you?
Song #4: Good Night and Joy Be With You All.. a song of blessing

.4...MAXX Factor, RQ-4th, #19................
Molly Plummer, Leslie Wodday*, Kim Hudson, Valerie Hadfield-Rasnake
Pride of Baltimore, CAL
Stage Attire: Black pants suit with a white vest that haas black and silver
chevrons
Song #1: That's Life
Kim is happy to be in Smashville... Valerie: no it's Nashville, the capital
of country music and the home of the Grand Old Opry.... Kim: OPRAH! Oh, Is
OPRAH here? I know, it's that favorite things show... look under your
chairs... you won a car, you won a car (she points to the judges)... finally
Leslie calms her down.
Song #2: Don't Break the Heart That Loves You**
Molly used to wish she was Nancy Sinatra... but she got sing with her famous
father, Ol' Blue Eyes... Kim: I have blue eyes... Molly: thank you, Kim
Song #3: Something Stupid... sorry, I just watched this ... too cute
Song #4: All the Way**

.5...Capri, RQ-5th, #19......................
Nancy Disney, Jen Kuethe, Kate Mannherz, Maggie Butts
Harbor City Music Company
Stage Attire: Black dresses with cinched waist and portrait collar...
They enter glued together with their white gloved hands at each other's
waist
Song #1: Hi, Neighbor... this routine is hilarious. Maggie put her other
hand on Kate's shoulder. Kate is concerned when a third hand appears on her
other shoulder. Finally, she slides her hand out of the glove on her hip to
do that final gesture and "horns" appear above Maggie's head!
They re-enact their first regional photo... Maggie is the only one looking
good ... She says, "You have your memories and I'll have mine."
Song #2: Roses of Yesterday**
Song #3: I Had Someone Else Before I Had You**
Nancy says it's not much fun to hang around with your little sister, and
Kate had some grooming issues and Maggie has a great ear for harmony but is
kinda weird. Let's go back in time...
Kate comes back out with really bad hair and a couple of big hairy moles,
Jen has buck teeth and Maggie's "ear for harmony" is pretty big (both of
them). They ask Nancy to sing with them and she agrees, only if she can do
some makeovers.
Song #4: You're Going to Be Popular (maybe this title is wrong... it's from
Witches)
Again, I just watched - y'all need to COME and see this stuff in PERSON!

Back after intermission...

Peggy introduces her choice for the President's Lifetime Achievement Award,

chance to list all of her accomplishments.

We have 23 members today celebrating their 50th anniversary! Each one is
awarded a lifetime membership and a 50 year pins. Hopefully, the names will
be published soon... it is impossible to keep up with the announcements and
the names scrolled by way too quickly on the big screen.

at convention and it's a beautiful season as well. Any season is a good
time for love
Song #2: If Ever I Would Leave You**
Chris: picking a name is the hardest part of being in a new quartet...
since they are from four far-flung states, Journey seemed appropriate.
Since the lead always gets two votes and total veto power, the next song
will feature our lead, LeAnn
Song #3: Everywhere I Am, There You'll Be (I think)
Patti: If you like us, we are Journey. If you don't, we are Aerosmith
Song #4: Cuddle Up a Little Closer**

something
Song #1: 9 to 5 parody about contest time
In a regular contest everyone sings a ballad... maybe we should sing one,
too
Song #2: If I had My Way**
Okay, let's see what other contests we can compete in... midsize quartet
contest... Hillevi and Camilla are the midsize quartet... love that
tenor-bari duet; the quartets with only one member contest.. imagine when
it's the bari's turn... Camilla starts an uptune... Remix small chorus:
Song #3: Mama Mia - once again the visual part is what makes this song!
Yes, you need to be here and not watching on your computer!
How about Barbershop's Got Talent? So You Think You Can Sing? The Swedish
Bikini Team contest? I think we can win that one!
Song #4: Fit as a Fiddle**

back and forth on the tag!
Song #2: When It's Nighttime in Dixie/Original Dixieland One-Step** with
some parody words to make the songs more about barbershop
DeAnne's husband gave her a mood ring... they've discovered when she's
happy, it's green. When she's sad, it's blue. When she's mad, it leaves
big red mark on his forehead.
Song #3: Sweet Dreams are Made of This
Sandy: Love that bar-r-rbershop. Having two Americans and two
Canadians...she notes some differences in pronunciation and tells a TEXAS
JOKE about Canada!
Song #4: Hallelujah - I think this might be the title .. beautiful song

country song to sing for us. I remembers a story from when my Daddy would
take me on his knee, in the backwoods... the backwoods of Indiana (work with
me here)...be sure to listen because there's a point...
Song #3: Where There's a Will, I'll Make a Way

Moxie Ladies
Stacey St. John, Jennifer Edwards, Amy Leacock, Gretchen Holloway
Pride of Toledo #17, Scioto Valley #4, CAL
"Top of the World"
Amy tells about all their travels and how much fun they are having... and
she met a Sweet Adeline here who told her they have a namesake. Stacey:
Oh, did she name her baby Stacey? Amy: Close, she named her dog Moxie
And now, back by popular demand, Stacey... who introduces the quartet... you
need to hear this, because one cannot duplicate this in mere words!
"My Troubles Just All Roll Away"
Stacey: just a year ago we got our shiny hats but the quartet is not about
one day. It's the love and dedication and sisterhood that is important and
for us, and at least one other quartet, it's all about:
"The Climb"

Emcee - Peggy Gram

Songs which are adjudicated are marked with **

Mic-Testers:
....Houston Horizon #10
....Houston, Texas
....Vickie Dennis
Stage Attire: Purple pants suit... jacket is sparkle fabric
Song #1: Come Fly With Me**
Denise: We get to do a lot of traveling... Calgary, even Honolulu; Vicki: if
we put sequins on our all-in-ones, they'd make great wetsuits
Song #2: Surfin' USA... Vickie sits on the stage - I mean beach, reading a
book, with Jim Arns geek glasses, getting some sun
Kathy: I just flew in.... Charlotte: on your broom?... Kathy: no honey
you're gettin' old - it was your broom I borrowed... those travel agents
don't always tell you the truth... light and airy means no AC... Charlotte:
if you start looking like your passport photo, it's time to go home...
Kathy: like Dorothy said, "There's no place like home."
Song #3: Over the Rainbow**
LeRae: We're all excited that you're comin' to Houston in 2011... remember,
don't squat when you have your spurs on.... see you soon!
Song #4: Texas Medley
Song #5: Freedom Medley

.1..Pride of Kentucky #4
....Louisville, Kentucky
....Debbie Hite
Stage Attire: Black pants, pink top with long, long black cut fringe that
is pink on the reverse side and sheer black sleeves
Song #1: If I Had My Way**
Song #2: I Love Jazz/Land of Jazz**
Betty Lou: I never really knew what true love was until I was married and
then it was too late... think back to that feeling of joy and excitement ...
Song #3: You Know How I Feel or I'm Feelin' Good - three soloists pass the
melody around ... this is a lot more than a four-part arrangement! Very
intricate piece that they make us feel is just a piece of cake... WOW.
Song #4: Nothin' Can Stop Us Now.... the back row becomes the front row and
signs are held up - "Back rows rock!" These ladies are wearing me out!

.2..Toast of Tampa Show #9
....Tampa, Florida
....Tony DeRosa
Stage Attire: All are in their fancy duds, all different... black and white
and silver
Song #1: Get Me to the Church on Time parody** - I'll be Performing in the
Morning.... all about hearing their name called for the finals, staying up
all night ... lots of antics by Tony as usual
Song #2: Wouldn't It Be Loverly parody... about how Tony should share his
innermost feelings, too... and let us chat... I wish I could get more of
these parody words down, but it's too much fun to listen
Tony practices: The men in the den watch mainly EPSN... Betty tries to give
Tony lessons... say "May I please have directions?" Tony just can't get out
the word directions... "Honey, it's your night - here's the remote." Tony
just can't get out the word remote... Gina says, totally deadpan, "Tony,
rock our world and tell us about your love" and tosses some confetti.
Song #3: On the Street Where You Live**
Tony thinks he's ready to share his heart... to get in touch with his
feminine side, but there's one more thing to do...
Song #4: I Could Have Danced All Night - pink boas come out... even Tony
uses one! Then we have the same song country style with a country line
dance, Tony gets a cowboy hat (pink)... then as Flamenco... then finally
Tony comes out in a pink tutu... then they do the song as a rap! There was a
whole lot more going on... you need to BE HERE!

.3..Velvet Hills #8
....Colorado Springs, Colorado
....Kathy Carmody
Stage Attire: Black leggings, black dress has swirls of blue and purple, a
slanted hem and cut foil fringe that slants the opposite way
Song #1: Young and Foolish**
Those were the days... things were so simple... then things got
complicated...
Song #2: As Long As We're Not in Love With Your Kind of Song, Why Can't We
Sing Something New/Undecided** parody ... they want Kathy to make up her
mind!!
Song #3: was a little short song for which I can't even begin to guess the
title
They all put on an ornament on the shoulder of their costume to make it
"new" ... did we mention they each have on two different earrings because
Kathy couldn't make up her mind? Finally, Kathy says she's found the
perfect song... the chorus points out that they are already on stage adn the
judges are waiting...
Song #4: I'm Gonna Sing the Perfect Barbershop Song - this song is a bunch
of famous contest song titles strung together - very cute!

.4..Greater Nassau #15
....Baldwin, New York
....Harriette Walters
Stage Attire: Black velvet pants, top has panels of velvet and lime sparkle
fabric. The front row are all wearing curtain rods with curtains attached
(think Carol Burnett as Scarlett O'Hara), riser people have drapes around
their
They are all the O'Hara sisters... when they found out they were in the
finals, they had to improvise a bit so they borrowed some things from the
headquarters hotel...
Song #1: Swanee**
Miss O'Hara recalls her romance with Mr. Rhett Butler and thinks maybe
things could have gone differently...
Song #2: My Foolish Heart**
Song #3: I Think I'm Going Out of My Head is sung to a picture (each is
holding one in front of her). We finally get to see the pictures - they are
all of Jim Arns with a Rhett Butler mustache
We're the O'Hara sisters - we can go find that Rhett Butler, and for once,
we're not going to think about this tomorrow...
Song #4: Ain't No Mountain High Enough

.5..Rich-Tone #25
....Richardson, Texas
....Dale Syverson*
Stage Attire: Black pants, bright teal, pink, lime or orange colored
t-shirt or net tops
Song #1: Fifteen .. minutes left and we're out of time or maybe it's called
Push It to the Limit??
Are false eyelashes considered facial hair? Why do they call it an
all-in-one when you can never get it all in one? Why does Dale always
disappear whenever we start to dance? Maybe she really is afraid "the
rhythm is gonna get ya."
Song #2: Smile, Darn Ya, Smile** features a whole lot of that very athletic
Rich-Tone style dancing....
The speaker is just up front to given "them" a chance to breathe...
whatever!
Song #3: A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square**
Dale: Here's what happens when the music selection is left up to THEM (the
chorus).
Song #4: Ain't Nothin' But a Hound Dog/Who Let the Dogs Out/the Hustle/the
Twist/YMCA/Conga/Never Gonna Get It/Hey Macarena/Thriller/Rhythm's Gonna Get
Ya/Shout/Proud Mary .. I know I skipped half a dozen songs or more.
Watching Dale try to either dance, stay out of the way or take over... it's
hilarious! I cannot imagine having enough stamina to perform a number like
this one!!!

...to be continued...

.6..Lions Gate #26
....Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
....Sandy Marron*
Stage Attire: Black pants, lime wrapped top with scarf hem over a black
shell
Song #1: The Way You Look Tonight**
Vancouver is home of the 2010 Winter Olympics... we've noticed a few
similarities: figure skating is judged by a panel, as are we; Olympics get
round the clock coverage - we have all over coverage; athletes have to pee
in a cup - we are not allowed to pee at all in the traffic pattern
Song #2: Piano Roll Blues** - featuring the coolest swipe ever!
Fabulous webcast... just imagine if we had riser side coverage, or if we had
rewind and could play it over and over... the commentators let us know that
this chorus is going to attempt some very difficult maneuvers... let's
listen:
Song #3: Red, Red Robin - this includes pause, mute, fast forward, rewind
(yes, they sang it backwards), slow motion replay and a spectacular tag of
tags of tags. You need to be HERE to totally get something like this!

.7..Gem City #4
....Dayton, Ohio
....Jean Barford*
Stage Attire: Black "column of fringe" gown with sequin trim on the bodice
Song #1: Bundle of Old Love Letters**
Song #2: Alabama Bound/Jubilee**
Songs of love, of hope, of home - they connect us all over the world. They
can stir us.
Song #3: Freedom Medley - they carry on all the flags that are represented
in Sweet Adelines
Flags symbolize our countries - we unfurl our gratitude to those who have
protected our freedom.
Song #4: Star and Stripes Forever - with words changed to encompass all
flags; a real production number with flag tossing (over Jean's head) and all
kinds of red, white and blue decorations at the end

.8..Coastline Show #1
....Providence, Rhode Island
....Gail Jencik
Stage Attire: Black leggings, slant hemmed dress of black fabric with pink
sparkly swirls and fringe at the bottom
Song #1: That's How You Jazz
Join us in a special tribute to the people behind the scenes... the
arrangers; haven't we all enjoyed taking the music from paper to
performance. It's not your grandmother's barbershop - barbershop ROCKS!
Song #2: I Love a Piano
MAXX Factor comes out and sings "When You Wish Upon a Star"
Gail: teacher, coaches, arrangers... tribute to Joni Bescos who always
encourages us to stand on her shoulders and reach for the stars.
Song #3: When You Wish Upon a Star**
Our last song was arranged by David Wright, who really challenges us...
Song #4: Handful of Keys

.9..Kansas City #7
....Kansas City, Missouri
....Kim Kraut & Stacy Schumacher
Stage Attire: Black velvet pants outfit with silver
Song #1: Humbug - a song of complaint about the chorus president.
Marley, the very 1st president of the KC Chorus (she's dead) tells the
pres., if she doesn't change her ways she'll end up like Marley - doomed to
roam the international stage forever. "I'm sending three spirits..."
Spirit of Chorus Past is here to remind her of all the amazing people who
have helped the chorus through the years.
Song #2: Auld Lang Syne** - the president unveils some photos of past
finals packages... including the camel and the aquarium
Spirit of Chorus Present ... it's Saturday night, you're in Nashville and
you've only sung one competition song, so what does that tell you to do?
Song #3: Alabama Bound/Jubilee**
Spirit of the Chorus Future... to show you what to happen if you don't
change your ways. We can't impeach her... we'll have to quit. Can we wrap
this up, we havent' had a time penalty in 14 years! Where is Tiny Tim? We
tried, but Melodeers wouldn't loan him to us.
Song #4: I Got the Music in Me - the front row went out and got additions
to their costume... long fringe on the sleeves and knees... it was a sketch
watching the Spirit of the Chorus Future do the choreography. I hope y'all
could see this on the webcast! (And if not... you really ought to think
about coming next year.)

10..Mountain Jubilee #8
....Salt Lake City, Utah
....Tori Postma
Stage Attire: Some red and some blue dresses with slanted, ruffled hems
Song #1: If I Give My Heart to You**
Roses are red, violets are blue, we love it in Nashville, how about you.
Roses are red, robins are betterer... that's not a word. Well, you try to
do it gooder... "thank you."
Song #2: Red, Red Robin**
Nobody leaves this place without singing the Blues...
Song #3: The Blues in the Night (My Momma Done Told Me)
Doesn't matter if you tall or short, young or... sorry 'bout that, a woman
or..... a woman... but all Sweet Adelines love to boogie
Song #4: Jump, Shout Boogie
