I have corrected the totals at the bottom of each category. Note that the
bonus points are added into the Finals total. If I try to set them off to
the side, it makes my chart too wide for some people's email, so I'm going
to trust y'all to remember that bonus points do NOT get added again into
the category totals. You may want to delete the other chart.
Songs listed are the ones that were judged as contest songs. For other

Creating a Visual Plan: Class with Erin Howden
Friday Morning/Portland 2001
This was a class given by North Metro choreographer and assistant
director Erin Howden. It was by invitation only to directors and
choreographers and was aimed at helping them work together to create
the best visual product.
Erin started the class by telling a story about her daughter. I won't
share it with you! You need to go to one of her classes in person!
The point that she wanted to make was that we need to let children be
our mentors. They do everything with passion and soul, and no matter
how good our "plan" is, it is nothing if there is no soul behind it.
Erin then had the audience choose partners. Each person had to tell
her partner about the most exciting moment in her life BUT she had to
do it without moving a muscle. When asked for feedback about how
that felt for both sender and recipient of the message, the response
was overwhelming that it was AWFUL for both parties. One of the
things that became evident is that when your body is stiff, it
translates to your voice. Naturally the discomfort of
the "performer" transferred to the "audience." Erin's point: DON'T
EXPECT THE AUDIENCE TO BE MOVED IF YOU ARE NOT!
She did a quick run down of the evolution of Sweet Adeline
Choreography:
*Rigid posture, no individual movement, and the front row would stand
on the risers. Now SMILE!
*Cylinders: Some gestures with a specific inventory of moves.
*The Age of the Formation: Kick lines are us!
*Age of the Wave and Special Effects
*Involvement and meaning - more drama
*Musical approach - not just moves mirroring the lyrics
*Endless possibilities with increased creativity.
When the director/music staff chooses the music, they need to
determine if the chorus can handle it both musically and from a
physical standpoint - can the chorus present the song in a way that
will bring the right message. The perfect example: Joint is
Jumping. Your chorus may be able to handle it vocally, but if they
don't have the physical ability to do more than a hand wave here and
there, the audience just isn't going to go on the ride with you. (By
the same token, if they can move like professional dancers, but
don't have the vocal skills, you've got a problem!)
Choreography is NOT dancing, it's drama! The director needs to
remember that she is part of the whole visual package. She/he must
be a performer right along with the rest of the chorus.
Beware of compartmentalizing the music versus the visual.
Choreographers MUST be part of the music team and the director MUST be
involved in the visual planning. If a move is taught as a "move" it
will remain just a move. The chorus must know why they are doing it.
Creating the plan:
Step 1: NO RULES!
*no inventory
*no limitations
*only passion, creativity, and freedom must exist. "It's easier to
tame a wild horse than to invigorate a tame idea."
Step 2: Define the song type
*lyrical: ex - Pal of My Cradle Days
*Rhythmic: Conga
*Mood: Mood Indigo
*Combination
Step 3: Establish the character and story line
*Answer the who, what, where, why, and when question.
*Don't be "like" a character - BE the character
*Director needs to take on that mind set when developing the
interpretive plan.
Step 4: Develop interp plan
Most important point here is that the director has to communicate the
musical interp to the visual team and to the chorus when they learn
the music. And YES, it can be changed!
Step 5: Music is taught
Give the technique a reason to live
Step 6: Determine costuming style
*Go with your musical plan and character
*Don't make the audience "think" about why you're wearing what you're
wearing.
Step 7: Visual team creates a musically sensitive choreo plan
*You don't have to start at the front end of the music! If you're
inspired by something in the middle of the song, start there and build
outward - or go back to front!
*Visual team members need to get over themselves! It's not about
you! If something doesn't work, that's okay, it's not a personal thing.
*Erin says that she never uses a paper plan. That makes it too easy
for people to go left brain on her! Besides, the plan can always
change, and the paper trail only makes it confusing. She wants the
left brainers to dig down to their souls and remember the passion
behind the movement, not just the move!
*Make sure the difficult musical points are not hindered by the
choreo.
***Be sensitive to the singing level of your chorus!!!***
Musical things to highlight with your choreography:
*Interpretive breaths - use as a spring board - sometimes the best
visual things happen when you're NOT singing!
*Repetition of lyrics - you emphasize these changes musically, you
should visually too - think motive behind the visual. For an example,
Erin had the class sing "Glory, glory Hallelujah, glory, glory
hallelujah, glory glory hallelujah, His truth is marching on." She
gave us different motives for each glory glory. She then gave us
simple moves that reflected the motive behind each glory. Not only
did the music build, but our physical involvement came to a climax!
Great exercise!
*Stomp patterns
*Working to the climax, not just of the song, but of each phrase.
Work the staircase. Always remember, it's about the journey, not the
destination.
Step 8: Teach the plan
*Make sure that you start by emphasizing the message and attitude of
the music. Don't just focus on the mechanics.
*Work general to specific (don't worry about that 45% angle!)
*Make sure the choreo is demonstrated with the desired execution.
Step 9: Work the execution of the song
*GO BIG OR GO HOME!!!
*Don't wait for the audience to respond before you start selling.
Make them respond. (You have to do this in rehearsal too.)
*Energy is was elevates us. There are tricks-like bending your knees
and using the floor as a spring board - but we have to love what we're
doing or the energy is not going to happen.
*Celebrate when chorus members are a bit uncomfortable. It means
they're growing!
Some misconceptions/mistakes we have and make about visual planning
*Trying to force fit a visual element when it doesn't belong (they did
it, and it's really cool, and I want to put it in here).
*More is NOT better! (Think wave after wave after wave.)
*We must teach every angle. (No judge ever said, "Boy the 45% angles
of your arms on that move were perfect!)
*We need to look like ________ to succeed. Be who you are!
Erin finished by showing a clip from the movie "Dead Poets Society."
Again, I'm not going to give away all of her tricks, rent the movie
yourself and find out a little bit about passion!

50-Year Members are recognized: Mavis Burtness, Joyce Cunningham, Opal
Hicks, Phyllis Hoak, Jarmela Speta
Lifetime Achievement Award: Jarmela Speta
NOTE: If you enjoy reading these reports and are moved to make a
contribution, please direct it to the Young Singers Foundation, P. O. Box
470168, Tulsa, OK 74147-0168 Let's ensure the future of this wonderful
organization and make life better for some young people at the same time.
Each contestant number and chorus name is followed by the region #, city
and state/country, director's name, and previous record at international
[in brackets]. ** denotes contest songs which are judged.
Mic-testers: Pride of Kentucky
Stage attire: All white with silver trims, but every member is different!
Song #1: Great Day/Zip-a-Dee Doo Dah - Debbie keeps bumping into the
front row and they bump her... but she gets 'em back weh she refuses to cut
them off.
The devil challenges St. Peter to a chorus contest... St. Peter says he has
all the best singers and all the best directors and it would be no contest.
The devil says, "Yeah, but I have all the judges."
Song #2: They tell the judges to take a break and they'll write their own
scores in a quick little song.
Song #3: **If You Love Me, Really Love Me - there's some really nice
"stuff" happening here - vocal inflections and other "technical" things, I
am sure, but it just sounds like wonderful story-telling.
Various lines about love... Debbie says about husbands, it's better to want
something you don't have than have something you don't want.
Song #4: ** Angry/Bill Bailey Medley - has all the elements you want in a
contest uptune - they are having a blast and it shows.
We're to think about how we as Sweet Adelines can impact the world by
showing people how to live in harmony...
Song #5: This is the Moment - a stirring rendition, with the flags of all
the Sweet Adelines nations coming up at the end.
Song #6 - reprise of Great Day.
1 Bay Area Showcase, #12, San Jose, CA; Pat LeVezu; ['88(17); '91(10);
'94(15); '96(13); '98(10)]
Stage attire: blank and white prison uniforms. The entrance is an act -
some are sitting on the stage "talking" to the judges, all others are
visiting with each other - they look like trouble-makers - duh! Some are
holding jail break signs. Pat comes out in the prison guard's uniform and
tries to bring order to the chaos.
Song #1: ** This Joint is Jumpin' - Pat goes off to the side and lets them
sing it. Now she's coming to the front to try to get control, but they
keep singing and playing. They do let her cut them off at the end.
The trustee comes out to tell about the rules at Sing-Sing. One member
thought it was a retreat. No singing in the shower, it wastes water. One
prisoner's crime was stealing three basses from the Rich-Tones.
Song #2: Jailhouse Rock - Pat's at the side again, but she takes off her
jacket and she's rockin' and rollin' with the prisoners now, too.
The place is depressing, and one prisoner doesn't know who her man is
seeing when he isn't visiting her.
Song #3: **Crying Myself to Sleep - at the quiet ending, they are looking
out through the "bars" with longing.
They just got a reprieve from the governor!
Song #4: Let the Good Times Roll - the stripes really enhance their cute
choreo - wish I had the words. There's one Groucho walk that the front
row does that is too neat!
Hi, Laurie here. Marti has taken the computer and she won't give it back
to me, but I thought I'd share a little bit with you about what Marti is
wearing today. She's got on a vest with about 75 pins from various
conventions, regional quartet medals, and international medals from years
back. One of the fun things about international convention is seeing how
each person shows her Sweet Adeline Spirit. Some wear their charm
"necklaces," some hang multiple chorus golds around their necks, other
wear their hard earned shiny hats. If you've never been to an
international convention, the audience section in and of itself, is a
sight to behold!
2 Kansas City, #7, Kansas City, MO; Jo Kraut; ['90(3); '93(2); '95(5);
'97(3); '99(5)]
Stage attire: black dresses or pantsuits with collar and various Egyptian
headdresses. Jo's is the most elaborate, with huge tall peacock feathers.
There are two archaeologists. Once they start singing, Cleo is carried in
on a litter and oh, look - there's a camel and two mummies. The "slaves"
dump Cleo unceremoniously on the stage.
Song #1: Some sort of chant which sounds Egyptian.
Banter between the mummies and the archaeologists.
The archaeologist mentions a pyramid and some chorus members come out and
build one - cheerleader style.
Song #2: **No Ones Tells It Any Better than Your M-U-Double-M-Y - buy the
videos 'cause this is too much! Even the camel dances!
Where did Cleo get her treasure? She has more wedding rings than a capella
Gold!
Song #3: **Who'll Take My Place - Jo really has a way with a ballad and
this one is no exception. Hushed traditional bell chord tag is lovely.
Cleopatra was the first Sweet Adeline and she was a queen! It's time to
wrap this up... show me the mummies.
Song #4" Livin' in a Crypt (Puttin' on the Ritz). Five more mummies come
out and dance... Thriller Night - this is impossible! Again - if you
didn't get the video web cast, you're gonna have to buy the video just for
this set! On the way off stage, the camel is followed by a member with a
pooper scooper! Oops...Jo Kraut just stepped in it!
3 Mountain Jubilee, #8, Salt Lake City, UT; Tori Postma; ['73(5);
'75(4); '77(18); '82(11); '84(10); '86(10); '88(7); '91(6); '95(6); '97(4);
'99(4)]
Stage attire: teal and purple dress over pants with one purple sleeve (and
side) and they start right off with the color changes!
Song #1: ** Changes Medley - yellow scarves come out and change to orange!
Then they become old lady scarves at "old and grey"... the Mountain Jubilee
sense of humor is coming through but the singing never flags!
The tall emcee loves change... a short lady is trying to see around her.
The short wants to change it so the short ladies can be in front.
Song #2: Behind a Tall Sweet Adeline (Hernando's Hideway) - another excuse
to buy the video! Now all the shorties are in front for a change. Now the
shorts and talls are dancing together. Now they are killing each other!!!
The next emcee would like all songs to be about cowboys.
Song #3: How the Yodel was Born - (the cowboy came down and the horse came
up and they met at the saddle horn... ouch!) The bass from Rainbow
Collection (Linda Mills) comes out in a 50-gallon hat comes out and yodels.
Tori: Change is inevitable, growth is optional - they choose growth. They
feel like family. I can't type fast enough to share all of her
inspirational thoughts.
Song #4: **Sweet Adeline - all the mother/daughter and sister pairs come
out front - it gets me right here! They stay there for the photo, too -
way cool!
4 Rich-Tone, #25, Richardson, TX; Dale Syverson; ['83(12); '85(6);
'87(3); '89(2); '92(1); '95(1); '98(1)]
Stage attire: Hooded purple dresses and it looks like they're carrying
brooms. The front row is pounding the floor with their broom handles as
everyone else walks on. One member dances across the stage in the dark as
they are introduced, swirling her cape and skirt. It's a witches
council... concerned with a loss of powers in Henrietta (Dale)...
Song #1: I'm a Survivor (?) They strip back the capes to reveal a coral
gown with jagged hem. I'm loving the witchy haridos with dayglo colored
stripes and Gwen Smith comes out to speak with bouncy silver glasses
sticking out of her hair.
Dale controls them all - they hang they heads over sidewas until she
releases them...
Song #2: **Please Don't Talk About Me - there's a "spell" battle between
Dale and another member. Guess who wins!
Someone please give Henrietta a broom... she gets one:
Song #3: Straighten Up and Fly Right...broom choreography! Now Henrietta
(Dale) has a dustbuster! She's called on for breaking the rules, but gets
a pass for creativity. Then the dustbuster starts sucking on her cheek.
Song #4: **For All We Know - another gorgeous Rich-Tone ballad.
For the final test, Henrietta has to disappear completely - or else she'll
be ORDINARY!
Song #5: Magic Medley with Witchy Woman, Abracadabra, Born to Be Wild and
who knows what else. Throughout, Dale keeps trying to hide, but it's not
working. At the very end, there's a puff of confetti and she's GONE! All
that's left is her cape and glasses. Looks like Dale won't be in the photo
this year!
5 Pride of Toledo, #17, Toledo, OH; Jim Shisler; ['90(16); '93(21);
'95(13); '97(7); '99(10)]
Stage attire: Slant hemmed sparkling sky blue irridescent sequin fabric
top with feather accents at neck and sleeve over black velvet pants
Song #1: **Dance/Chicago Medley - This front row is very athletic and it
suits this medley. Lots of great energy here.
Chicago is a great town but most of us come from small towns. They
reminisce, ending with meeting that special someone...
Song #2: **Bandstand in Central Park - good goose-bumpy climax!
Song #3: Ballin' the Jack - this number lets their choreography shine
without sacrificing that great sound.
The front row has their tops stripped off revealing camisoles in rainbow
colors of satin for...
Song #4: American Bandstand - these gals can dance!! They try to teach
Jim but he seems hopeless. The front row is now on the floor doing the
choreo with their legs in the air. This is quite a production number and
the audience is lovin' it. For the photo, one gal hops into Jim's arms!
Intermission trivia... which chorus in Thursday's contest was at its
second-ever competition of any kind???
6 Ronninge Show, #32, Ronninge, Sweden; Britt-Helene Bonnedahl; ['89(5);
'92(6); '95(2); '98(4)]
Stage attire: Sequin fabric slant-hemmed tops in several different colors
with black accents, black pants
29 of their singers were too afraid to come with them across the ocean, but
they'll be singing with the chorus in their hearts
Song #1: **Come Take Your Place in My Heart - vocal inflections are a
specialty of this fine chorus
They traveled nine thousand miles (26 hours) to get here - does that give
us a idea how much they love us?
Song #2: **Deed I Do Medley - their choreo is very fresh and they can
realy vamp; we got a touch of Swedish accent (on purpose) on"Moooter Booot"
Cowboys hats appear.
Song #3: Suzanne Harrington takes a solo on "I Feel Lucky Today" while
seven gals do a Texas line dance in front. More join the line dance - it's
pretty sexy!
Britt-Helene wants us to know that they love the US and Sweet Adelines and
they will stand beside us and hold our hands...
Song #4: Starting with Britt-Helene, about a dozen different members take
a solo to intro "We Are the World" - I wish I had the Kleenex concession!
The audience in on their feet, crying their eyes out. Excuse me while I
dry myself so I don't short out the keyboard ...
7 San Diego, #21, San Diego, CA; Kim Hulbert; ['75(1); '78(2); '85(8);
'88(5); '91(2); '94(7); '97(2); '99(3)]
Stage attire: Purple dress with slant hem and about two feet of fringe
hanging from the hem. The fabric has swirls of silver and gold foil - it's
beautiful
Song #1: **South Rampart Street Parade - I don't think they stopped moving
or breathed from beginning to end.
Tent Meeting... sinners everywhere. Dallas! In the pit!! Even on this stage!
Song #2: I'm the Preacher Man - Connie Noble does a scat solo with the
chorus dheals" one of the members of the "church" who then does cartwheels
to show that she's all better!
Kim sinned once... once???
Song #3: I'm in the Soul-Savin' Army - WOW! What a big, beautiful sound
and the showy choreography is fabulous - and the music keeps coming all the
time.
A witness shares that she let it all slip away...
Song #4: **There Goes My Heart - a powerful ballad!
Song #5: Great Day - Broadway has nothing on this bunch! WOW! As I said
before and I'll say again.... buy the video! At least get one for your
chorus to share!!!
Trivia answer: Smoky Mountain Harmony - they are only two years old and
have competed once before at regional and the second time was Thursday!
8 Choral-Aires, #3, Westmont, IL; Joan Boutilier; ['83(10); '86(13);
'88(12); '93(5); '95(4); '98(9)]
Stage attire: Red or blue T-shirts - lots of Cubs logos, black pants; front
row in baseball uniforms, off to the side.
Chorus chants "we will, we will rock you"
Emcee Pat Rotunno introduces the start of the season, the team runs onto
the "field" and Pat announces the "anthem" of which they sing the tag.
Song #1: **Great Day for a Ballgame (Irish) parody... now that Michael
Jordan's gone, we've only got the Cubs
Now the "crowd" on the risers is doing the wave... the team's ahead 5-0 on
opening day. We have to sing at the 7th inning stretch??? We don't SING!
Song #2: Take Me Out to the Ball Game - off by one syllable... how can
they end it? They've run out of words! It's one, two, three, FOUR BALLS
you walk at the old ball game! Whew!
Song #3: **There Used to Be a Ballpark - they really get into the story,
and so do we.
When you're a Cub fan, hope springs eternal...
Song #4: Look for the Silver Lining/It's Gonna Be a Great Day - they carry
the character through to great effect. This package was nicely tied
together (and oh, yeah, they sing wonderfully, too).
9 Pride of Portland, #24, Portland, OR; Mike McCormic; [former Blue
Lake Chorus - '90(13); '93(12); '95(18); '97(27); '99(26)]
Stage attire: royal pantsuits with sequin fabric drapes across front
Song #1: Tin Roof Blues - there's an instrumental interlude in the middle
and then they really start to rock!
This chorus is only about nine months old - what a gestation period... and
who knew the baby would get so big. But they had a little help...
Song #2: Love Potion #9 - Nancy Kurth comes out dressed as a
magician/fortune teller and directs this number.
Song #3: **Changes Medley - love the different kick line - very effective!
Song #4: **Sweet Adeline - Great job on this demanding ballad and we love it!
10 Pride of Baltimore, #19, Baltimore, MD; Janet Ashford; ['99(6)]
Stage attire: Bronze and black sequin dress with beaded/ribbon fringe on skirt
Song #1: **Big Bad Bill - they sound like they have more people than we
see. Snappy choreo as well.
Song #2: **Masquerade - great dynamic range and control for the "new"
chorus - only at their second international
Great things come in fours... four voices, four parts - four PRIDES?
When we go into competition mode, everything else goes bye-bye.
Song #3: Parody of Bye, Bye, Bye, Bye-Bye
To keep them in rhythm, they have chicks with sticks
Song #4: Can't even begin to describe this... drums made of trash cans and
chicks with sticks!! The song has no words, so I don't know what it's
called. This is one contagious number. Did I mention that the chicks with
sticks changed their clothes? Laurie says the songs is from the animated
movie, "Tarzan." A fabulous number to end this day of competition.
This has been the best chorus finals I've ever seen - of course, I say that
every year. Choruses who are preparing for Nashville are watching this and
saying, "Oh, <expletive deleted> - what are we gonna to to top this???"
I love watching the creativity and pride that comes out at our conventions
and it makes me feel so great a being a member for 29 years!!!
To entertai while waiting for results, we have... 2002 Queens of Harmony:
FANATIX - wearing black pantsuits with long jackets and copper shells.
Song #1: Little Lady Make Believe
Darcy says, "Talk about dressing up." She also says anyone can do it if
she can and explain s that she couldn't hold a tune when she started.
Gerry says her son's first "bigboy" quartet made the finals at District and
we should all think about Sam at about 9:00 pm. and that we should get our
kids involved in barbershop.
Song #2: I've Got the World on a String
Sandy thank the two choruses. And as much as we talk about the guys... her
husband is here and it's the first time he's seen her be really good ... at
singing.
Connie thanks Jean Barford and another coach? and the Lobaughs, at whose
home they meet, and their arrangers. Sorry, Connie talks so fast and with
such a deep voice (!) that I'm having trouble understanding her.
Song #3: This is Some Lucky Day
2588 Sweet Adelines performed in the chorus contest.

Kathy Carmody introduced the chorus, saying there are no rules for this class!!
We'll Sing All We Know Tonight - don't we wish they could do just that!
The chorus is wearing the black pants with black/gold sparkling tops with
slanted necklines and hems.
Jim says they'll sing one more which will be used later for demo purposes -
their contest uptune, "My Honey's Lovin' Arms." They have to have been up
since the crack of midnight to be so warmed up and "on" - wowee!
Jim: Their philosophy is to be the best performer(s) they can be. They
look at competition as the reward for all of their hard work. The energy
and stamina we see doesn't just happen. The members come to rehearsals
prepared - with emotion ready to go, with an attitude of freedom, with the
breathing mechanism ready to work. A strong foundation is needed to build
a big tall tower.
We get to sing! We use "You're the Spirit of Sweet Adelines," which,
handily, is printed in the competition program. It sounds pretty good!
(I'll bet Jim will make it lots better before we're through.)
Start with the lift in our instrument. The reed is our vocal cords, the
bell is the mouth (including the palate). The physical stamina of the body
is a key element in the use of our instrument. Yes, directors nag about
posture, but it's the most basic aspect of the craft. Without it, we
cannot do anything else right. He talks about singing with a lifted palate
all through one vowel and using language only to make the words
intelligible. The chorus demonstrated by singing an intro on one vowel
without the proper lift, then WITH the lift, then by adding words. (The
lifted sound is MUCH more resonant, full and good to hear - duh!)
Now we get to some warm-ups. First is a ki-ki-ee-ee, while marching. Then
we bravo, bravo while directing. Their are four basic vowel shapes -
square (ee, ih, eh, uh); rectangular (ah, aw), round (oh, oo) and
triangular (aaa, as in hat). The chorus demos the ee vowel with and
without the lift in the check muscles... why do we ever do it wrong? They
do others as well. (The unlifted vowel is matched, but the resonance and
sound at least double with the lift.) The shapes are not so apparent to
the eye, but they sure make a difference to the ear! Jim reinforces that
the shape concept is imagery, not a mouth choreography instruction!
We sing the intro again. Think of the ah vowel's openness in the back all
the time and change the words more with the front of the mouth.
Renee Porzel, the Melodeers choreographer, leads us in a physical warm-up
(she says it should be the last warm-up, to get our blood going after the
vocal warm-up).
Next basic: absolute command of the notes and words. You can't play with
things like Pythagorean tuning unless you have solid command of your part
and your visual plan. The chorus demos the first step - all the right
notes and very vowel conscious. Nice chords, but not music yet. Jim adds
some more lyrical qualities that make the words begin to make sense. Like,
he asks them to make the word "dreaming" sound like it. Of course, Renee
jumps out and says they have to move to make it work. She's right, he's
right. THAT is music! Next they add physical freedom - wow!
Now for some music category stuff:
Tempo = speed limit (30 mph)
Pulse = how you feel the tempo (you hit the mailboxes as you go down the
street)
Rhythm = little groups of notes with different values (backbeat, for instance)
They sing the first part after the intro with a good steady tempo. It
sounds choppy (still good, of course, but...) They decided to use an
accelerando to make it more exciting. He shouts out the "speed limits" as
they move from 20 mph to 25, 30, 35, to 40 and so on and hit cruise control
at 55 for a steady tempo. Yep - it's much more exciting! Once on cruise,
they mix up the downbeat and backbeat - out of synch! They try all
backbeat - boring. They add pulse - yes!
Renee - to develop a visual plan, you must realize that the director's
concept for the music comes first. If there's a place where the director
is always stopping, or asks you to take out the moves, the problem is with
the plan, not the chorus. First, teach the members to have control of
their own skin. Then, they have to commit to learn the moves. Then we add
the character. The chorus sings several phrases as a cheerleader. You can
see it! (It doesn't fit...) Now they do it angry. This looks really
unified, but not correct for the words! Next they do sad. This one really
affects the sound, too, besides being inappropriate to the lyrics.
Finally, thye show the finished product and we see the RIGHT character.
Renee talks about "freeform" - which they add to some songs rather than
planned choreo. Each member does her own thing within some parameters.
Renee: We have only about 120 minutes to sing each week. If we spend time
discussing how high our hands are, we are wasting precious time. Renee
does no choreo sheets - if the members want one, they can make their own
(the plan changes too often to make sheets practical or even useful). If
they want a video, they can make one. Finally, the members are responsible
to learn the plan - taking away a lot of things that eat up rehearsal time.
Other streamline things... they chose a color plan for travel/casual
outfits and every member picks her own. They have standardized makeup for
every performance.
They demo "doing the moves" as opposed to "performing the plan." Not only
the visual gets better, but also the vocal is fuller, rounder and more
resonant!
Audience questions (answers):
There will be a video of this class for sale from HQ.
"I Wanna Come Back as a Man" started out at a warm-up song and Jim decided
to arrange it for them since they had so much fun with it.
They showed how many singers of each part.
Have they "lost" the false eyelashes??? NO!
Their audition process is about four weeks. They are voice-placed the
first week. The audition involves interval singing, how well they can keep
a tonal center, and then they sing the current contest uptune with a
quartet to see if they could learn the vocal plan, including a few visual
things such as posture, how they emote facially and how they handle nerves,
etc.
They learn new music with learning tapes. They just got a packet with 7
holiday songs. After about three weeks, they have the goal to be off paper
with all the basics. Visual plans are taught with Renee in front of the
chorus with her back to them. She demonstrates physically and takes no
questions until she has finished teaching. She believes visual plan
teachers shold talk less and demo more. Repetitions are better than
standing around answering questions. (I know from experience that she
usually doesn't need to answer any questions once she's finished teaching.)
On ballads, the emotion should be focused from the shoulders up with the
strength coming from the legs.
Qualification for this performance was zero-zero-zero (no word, note or
breath errors - which means no breathing at the places where you are
forbidden to breathe). There is also a visual qualification. Video is
done of ten at a time and they are taken out for feedback. Later, they are
observed in small groups and they receive a written evaluation.
No attendance requirements, but if you miss too many, you're not going to
be able to qualify.
The rest of the questions and answers will be on their web site at
http://www.melodeers.com
They finish up with "I Wanna Come Back as a Man."

The Swingline Cubs played wonderful music as the audience came in and got
settled. Tunes that *I* recognize. They play "Pretty Woman" as our new
queens are brought in to their seats of honor in the very front of the
judges pit. Of course, only Darcy gets to watch the show from there - the
other three are gonna be on stage!
The Coronet Club Chorus entered - how colorful, with all the sequined,
beaded, satin and other shiny or sparkling gowns!
Everything's Comin' up Roses - how they perfect these songs and all the
choreography with a week's rehearsal is beyond me, but it happens every
year.
Lee Davison directed and the pointed out that she wasn't Renee Craig. She
said that Renee stayed home because she is involved in the relief effort at
ground zero... and besides, there are "a few" directors in the Coronet
Club. Lee introduced the next "guest" director - Nancy Bergman.
My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose
Lee takes the emcee podium and talks about the 1951 Queens, the
Quarternotes. We get an audio/visual history of the quartet on the big
screen. I wish I could detail it here, but am typing on a stool instead of
our nice table (which was replaced by the band) and besides - the
Quarternotes are pretty well indescribable. If you never saw them perform,
you missed a lot. Kaye Jensen, Baritone, is recognized on the 50th
anniversary of their win. Kaye says she used to be a Paulsen, but then
her husband said, "It's either me or the Quarternotes" -- and here she
is!!! The Coronet Club is going to honor the Quarternotes by starting a
special fund to help aspiring quartets for Queen's College.
4 Star Collection - pink wrap gowns with subtle sparkle
Let's Get Away from it All - they demonsttrate that Queens get even better
after they win!
Pat announces that they would like to feature their long-time coach, Mary
Dick. Mary sings I'm Crazy for You with the "pips" backing her. Lovely.
The Trouble with the World Today... is Coffee in a Cardboard Cup. What a
fun song - I wish I could recount all of the lyrics.
Liz Hardcastle comes out to emcee. She shopped for a new dress and didn't
find one. She and Renee are having a contest to see who can wear theirs
the longest without coming out of it, but Renee already won that! She
introduced the Bron's Tones (1971 Queens) on their 30th anniversary: Who
Will Buy - they can still ring a chord and have a powerful sound!
Classic Edition: (Sandi Wright has replaced Susan Ives as lead) They are
wearing short sparkling dotted black dresses. Maybe those are diamond
shapes...
and they sing a song whose title I couldn't guess, but everyone gets a turn
at scat and it's really neat. Oh, I think it's "A String of Pearls." The
next song may be called "Thanks Again" - it's about all the things our Mom
and Dad have done for us. So, which crown does Sandi wear, now that she's
a Classic ADDition? Why, the biggest one, of course. South Rampart Street
Parade! They rock on this one!
Liz introduced Bill Thornton, the background emcee. Bill is the lead of
the Dealer's Choice, 1973 SPEBSQSA champs.
High Society! For their 25th anniversary, they sing "Thank You, World, For
Letting Me Contribute to the Cause." Pat notes that she's on stage with
some of last year's and this year's champions!
Weekend Edition: they have beautiful multicolored beaded jackets over
satin skirts in four colors. "We single women keep looking for the right
man... sometimes in the wrong places, but we keep looking." "Good Old
Fashioned Lover Boy" with some typical Weekend Edition touches. For the
music lovers... "If I Had a Bulldozer." You need to hear this one - I
can't do it justice... but watch out for Nancy if she ever gets her wish -
she'll smash you all flat! Now, to honor the American spirit...Smile (when
your heart is breaking)..you'll see the sun come shining through.
Beautiful.
Liz says her mom now shoots from her new plastic hip. She still makes fine
tea, but her crumpets need some help.
Brief commercial for the quartets who perform tonight - their CD's are in
the lobby.
Our next guest director for the Coronet Club Chorus is Ruth Anne Parker, of
the 1967 Queens, the Hurricane Honeys... they sing a song about the Mardi
Gras and meeting at the masquerade. Sounds like a Renee special (I missed
the New Orleans convention, so that's probably what it's from).
Now the Swingline Cubs are going to rock the intermission. This crowd is
having WAY too much fun. The two sides of the auditorium started mirroring
each other's choreography and now the Coronet chorus is coming back on the
risers, but we don't want to stop dancing!!!
Naima Meyer directs "Doin' the Champion Strut." It's every Sweet Adeline's
dream to get a learning tape for this number! (Of course, you have to earn
that shiny hat first!)
Bill welcomes back our favorite redhead (at least she is this week) - Liz!
Liz does a commercial for the Coronet Clubhouse, Saturday night at the Hilton.
For their 15th anniversary, Ambiance sings Ain't Misbehavin' - still one of
my favorites of all time. (I bought the CD today because my tape is just
about shot!) Now they are doing my absolute favorite, Handful of Keys!
(Well, there is that Rhapsody thing, I guess, and the Jazz ladies stuff...
well, you probably know what I mean.) This routine is as fresh and funny
as ever.
Rumors! They have on their black suits. They start off with the jazzy
"Doin' the Sandman" with lots of scat singing going on. Charla steps up
and slays us, as usual, with The Lady Down the Hall. After a Dale joke,
they sing I'm All Bound 'Round with the Mason Dixon Line. They sure can
milk a chord, whether it's intro or tag! The overtones are screaming!
Diane Huber directs the one that always gets me. The Coronet Waltz, if
you've never heard it, pays tribute to the newest inductees (a capella Gold
this year) and tells them that "the Coronets are proud to be one year
older...for you."
a capella Gold - wearing red beaded tops with fringe on the bottom and
short dance skirts. They open with The Memphis Blues. Kim says she saw
someone yawn... but if we're gonna yawn, it should be on this next one,
which is a swingy version of If I Had You. Kim is single but she likes it!
They've been making a list of qualities in a man that they like (short
list) - they sing I Love Bald-Headed Men. Kim does a commercial for their
new CD, "Pure Gold" - which just came out Monday! Their final one is a
40's sounding swing tune with those great jazz chords... I would call it
"Give Me a Goodnight Kiss."
Jean Barford will be our last guest director, but Liz has one more duty -
to pay tribute to Renee - she has the whole crowd stand up and say, "Renee,
we love you!" (It's going to be filmed for Renee, so if you're not supposed
to be here....)
The chorus sings Put Your Hands Together. The audience claps along.
Karen Breidert talks about how we've felt the love and support of our
worldwide members and asks us to join the Coronets and the band in God
Bless America. Then, as the Coronets exit the stage, we all sing America
the Beautiful with the band and start to exit the arena after a wonderful
show.
This event, alone, is worth the trip to an international convention!

Pat McCandless spoke about the Young Singers Foundation and thanked
everyone for supporting the fund-raisers held this week. Music is such a
positive force in *our* lives, and the Foundation helps bring it into the
lives of young people today. Then she introduced the 2001 Rising Star
contest winners from Christchurch City, New Zealand, Backchat. They open
with "Baby You Can Drive My Car." Not your mother's barbershop! They are
wearing long, slim black skirts and hot pink strapless camisole tops and
black chokers. One gives a Maori welcome, but we are having a hard time
hearing the talking... oh, well. Now they sing "Beauty and the Beast."
They have such a nice clean sound - you would think they had been doing
this for years, but they're not old enough! Now they are doing the two
songs that they sang to win the Rising Star - the first is "Dixie One
Step." What a ringy sound! "Over the Rainbow." These girls really have a
handle on the barbershop balance, blend and style. If they stay together,
they might be another set of non-American queens someday.
They are collecting in the arena now - we're asking you again to pitch in
and help support the Young Singers Foundation and all it does to bring us
these wonderful young entertainers!!
Going in, consider it a "given" that every one of these contest songs are
excellent. There aren't enough ways to say "wow" in the language to cover
one of these finals contests!

hamming it up and keeping the music coming all the time and we love it.
Song #2: **Over the Rainbow - yes, we've heard this a lot, but they have
such a beautiful blend that we are loving it once again.
The bass found a book. "Hynosis for Dummies" She needs a volunteer - the
tenor says "pick me!" With a pitch pipe, she tries to hynotize Teresa and
all three go to sleep. She tells one to be Elvis, one to bark like a dog
and one to give thumbs up and a cheesy grin every time she hears the word
"eyes."
Song #3: **The Moment I Saw Your Eyes - during the song, the bass cues
everyone and they do their stuff... you had to be here! It was hilarious!
1. Swinglish Mix, #32, #4, #9; Pride of Kentucky, Ronninge, Spirit of
the Gulf, CAL; Louisville, KY; Eleanor Hawkins, Suzanne Harrington*, Patty
Hawley, Naima Meyer*; [2/00, 2/99, 3/98, 4/97]
Stage attire: Black velvet slim gowns, each with a different neckline
Song #1: Sing, Sing, Sing intro... to a Sweet Adeline Odyssey, with the
theme from 2001 with appropriate words...
The bari talks: the surgean general says that quarteting long distance is
hazardous to your health but they just can't quit. To answer our
questions: nobody's pregnant, yes they use tapes, yes they do shows and no
they don't do ABBA.
Song #2: **Down Among the Sugar Cane" - easy swinging tune, every chord
ringing.
Song #3: **Is This Just Another Song About Love - parody about how they
cannot win because Voices Only is here. Really cute. "We'll be here until
the day we all die!"
Song #4: You Can't Do That - this one is rockin' with vocal percussion and
everything. The audience claps along and loves it!
2. Spotlight, #2; Spirit of Detroit, Shoreline Sound, CAL; Madison Hts,
MI; Val Clark, LeAnn Hazlett*, Sue Snow*, Patti Britz, [1st International]
Stage attire: Red beaded gowns
Song #1: As Long As I'm Singing My Song - love this jazzy tune with a
great message for us. Tenor scats a bit - neat.
The bari not only has to keep them organized, but as the only married one,
has to keep them focused on music instead of running after guys. They
settled on this phone number for their business cards: 1-800 3-4-1-DATE
Song #2: **Love/Eyes Medley - super job on this fun uptune
Song #3: **Melancholy Baby - a new tag gives the perfect ending to this
lovely ballad.
They've been invited to sing in the smallest park in the world... better
get there early. It's 18 by 24... inches... and is sure to be filled to
capacity!
Song #4: Short version of the jazzy "Rose Colored Glasses" - great energy!
3. Night Magic, #19, #15; Heart of Maryland, Jersey Sound, Pride of
Baltimore; Timonium, MD; Shirley Eckert, Karen Matthews, Renee Walsh, Kathy
Martin; [3/00, 6/99, 4/98, 3/97, 4/96, 4/95, 1994, 8/93]
Stage attire: Gold tapestry-like fabric jackets over black pants and shell
Song #1: Everything's Comin' Up Roses - huge tag!
Song #2: **Who's Sorry Now - huge sound. They give us a chance to hear
each voice a little bit and then nail the tag to the back wall.
Song #3: **Roses of Yesterday - this is a fairly new ballad (at least to
me) about a lost romance. It's lovely and they sell it with heaps of
emotion. In fact the lead is losing it... now she's back with all her
power. Great poise.
Because it might rain they had to get some hats... the best place in
Portland to get hats is the Rose Garden Arena. ??? The lead points to the
crowns - "right over there!"
Song #4: Jazzy tune I don't recognize.. about the "doing the Sandman" -
they are really rockin' and ringing at the same time. Great song!
4. Voices Only, #1, #3, #5, #9, #11; Spirit of the Gulf, CAL; Wheaton,
IL; Shelly Sweet-Rubenic*, Liz Hardcastle*, Karen Breidert*, Bonnie
McKibben*; [1st International] NOTE: Karen Breidert is a dual member,
in Regions 1 and 9.
Stage attire: Black velvet slim gown with sheer neckine and long sleeves.
Neckline is also covered in silver glitter or rhinestones
Song #1: Another version of the Sandman song -- jazzy and fun!
Liz talks. "This is fun." They've even put me in a dress. If you like
what you hear, we're Voices Only.... if you don't, we're a capella Gold.
Song #2: **It's a Sin to Tell a Lie - Liz's antics are cute. They have a
lot of fun being sarcastic with some of the lyrics
Song #3: **If I Give My Heart to You - their masterful musicianship shines
on this beautiful ballad.
They got to sing on Rosie O'Donnell's show. Rosie chose the lyric written
by Karen. In front of millions of people, they got sing about mammograms.
Liz calls it their "Itty bitty.....ditty."
Song #4: "I'm Beginning to Feel the Squeeze" (parody of "Beginning to See
the Light")
Liz tells where they all live. She calls Karen an overachiever for living
in two states at once. They're trying to harmonize the world one state at
a time.
Song #5: Lazy Day - cool! 60's rock and roll! (5th Dimension??) Liz
looked at her "watch" - hope they're not overtime!!
5. Salt, #32; Ronninge, Stockholm City; Huddinge, Sweden; Anna Ohman*,
Annika Andersson, Anna-Stina Asplund, Susanna Gran; [20/00]
Stage attire: Black blazer and pants with bright irridescent sequin fabric
shell.
Song #1: **Love/Eyes Medley... You're in love again! I make you feel so
happy... they turn it around so that they are the object of affection.
Cute concept and they carry it off well with the choreo and staging.
Song #2: **Oh, How I Miss You Tonight - exquisite treatment. The seamless
transfer from lead to tenor at the tag - ahhhhh!
Anna (tenor) talks about the difficulties of picking out clothes. Start
with shoes and buy an outfit to match ... or start with earrings. She
doesn't want to come back as a man. She's glad to be a woman! Now they
are putting on old-fashioned Esther Williams bathing caps. They're really
"beauties" now!
Song #3: My Baby Loves Me Just the Way that I Am - I guess this is a
country tune - it's really cute. They leave after a unique bow!
6. Remix, #32; Ronninge, Stockholm City, Sun Light; Stockholm, Sweden;
Hillevi Martinson, Marie Flink, Camilla Ljung, Inger Bergqvist; [15/00(WC)]
Stage attire: Black velvet slim dress, tea length, with silver drape at
neckline
Song #1: **?Don't Break the Heart that Loves You - starts off peppy and
then the switch to vampy; solid wall of sound throughout.
Song #2: **If I Give My Heart to You - This is the first year I have heard
this ballad and I am loving it. They fill it with yearning and tenderness.
Song #3: Royal Garden Blues - new arrangement that we all loved!
7. Surround Sound, #3; Choral-Aires; Hanover Park, IL; Joan Boutilier,
Deborah Miller, Amy Brinkman*, Bonnie Fedyski*; [10/00, 5/99(WC)]
Stage attire: Deep purple? maroon? brown? velvet dress with bolero jacket
Song #1: **Keep Your Eye on the Girlie You Love/Bill Bailey - fun
treatment and the audience loves it
Song #2: **My Buddy - they power through this ballad with lots of style
and emotion. Hushed tag is lovely.
They talk about how busy the kids are and so on... the single lead says she
doesn't see why it should be such a problem. They tell her she can be the
Mom and they'll be the kids.
Song #3: Don't know the name of this classical piece but they cut up
throughout as "mom" tries to get them all dressed and ready for church.
Cute bit!
8. Brava!, #26; Westcoast Harmony, Lions Gate, CAL; Surrey, British
Columbia, Canada; Sandy Robinson, Lynn Gerard, Elaine Cotton, Shannon
Harris; [8/00, 16/99, 16/98, 15/97, 9/96, 4/94, 7/93, 9/92, 1991]
Stage attire: Short black dress with duster coat over
Song #1: **Angry/Bill Bailey Medley - lots of attitude... I mean they're
sorry they made him angry, but he should get over it!
Song #2: **Tree in the Meadow - they are good story-tellers and we believe
they'll love him!
Ready for one of those feel-good songs? Well, maybe later!
Song #3: Since You Been Gone - "I'm feelin' almost as bad as I did when
you were still here."
Their 10th time at international. Let's sing the judges comments:
Song #4: Unquartettable (parody) - this one you have to hear!! Buy the
video - it's too hard to do it justice with the written word.
9. Razzcals, #12; Mission Valley, Sacramento Valley, Voice of the
Valley; Roseville, CA; Dana Gibbs, Martha Segura, Cheri Jump, Chris Jette;
[4/00, 7/99, 15/98, 16/97, WC96]
Stage attire: Black velvet halter jumpsuit
Song #1: **Midnight Choo-Choo - they sure know how to power a tag and get
the audience revved up!
Song #2: **Roses of Yesterday - they also know how to convey tenderness
and even sadness.
If we're going to be international champions, we have a lot of languages to
learn.... Martha asks for a crown in Spanish!
Song #3: Jenny Rebecca - they handle the modern chords of this pretty
arrangement with ease.
Dana is the crocodile hunter, telling us about all those creatures in the pit!!
Song #4: Runaway - more 60's (or is it 50's? - probably, but I don't want
to admit that I know that) rock and roll. Great fun!
10. Fanatix, #21; San Diego, Sounds of Harmony; Diamond Bar, CA; Connie
Noble*, Darcy Newell, Sandy Shelver*, Gerry Papageorge*; [5/00, 4/99(WC)]
Stage attire: Black leather and velvet - each one different
Song #1: **I Love to Hear That Old Barbershop Style - they make it their
own with some word changes
Darcy turned 30 this year (poor thing). Her mom told her, "when life gives
you lemons.... tuck them in your bra - might help, can't hurt."
Song #2: Why Did I Choose You - this difficult modern arrangement is made
to seem easy to sing.
Darcy: "I would still choose you... that implies that I have a choice. I
wonder what that's like?"
Song #3: I've Got the World on a String
Darcy: "I'm still single... yeah, nothing's changed during that song.
Maybe it's because I'm tall. I think it's more to do with that lemon
thing."
Song #4: **Love Me and the World is Mine - this is a powerful song and
suits this quartet to a T. Wow.
To entertain while we wait for scores...
a capella Gold, 2001 Queens of Harmony
Attire - black beaded top and tea length skirt and oh yeah, crowns!
Song #1: Runnin' Wild - they have a blast with these lyrics. "Feeling gay
- no way!" And then at the tag they complain about all that running and
take a breather.
Creative juices flowed after they were in bed. Mickey Mouse tag about
being queens. Parody "Send in the Crowns." How to wear a crown... you get
a royal ridge in your skull. Be careful hugging tall men. "Send in the
Crowns" (My Country Tis of Thee). "Oh, Come Let Us Adore Us... they made
these crowns just for us."
Wouldn't it be nice if we had dicovered Sweet Adelines when we were as
young as those little Backchat people? Then we'd be so much younger now!
Song #2: Renaissance Woman - This is our favorite song and they've added
to the routine to keep us in stitches.
They've decided they are not going to end their year as champions yet! The
new crowns are so large, they're going to put them on with masking tape...
Leaving us with the song that tells how they feel about the quartet, about
singing, about the organization:
Song #3: If You Love Me, Really Love Me - the crowd is on it's feet.
MENC/Sweet Adelines Award: Estelle Glarborg
European Music Educators Assocation Award: Glen Chaney and Alyson Allan of
Nottingham, England

Gerry is the first person to earn crowns for two different parts. Connie
has a fourth crown! (It's only Sandy's second, too.) Darcy is kneeling so
Kim can pin on her lead's crown. This is a popular choice, too. The
audience loves them!
Their acceptance songs is Two Tickets/Sentimental Gentleman and it's
wonderful. It's always fun to watch a new queen get accustomed to that
heavy crown on her head as she sings... she likes it! Killer tag!!
Complete scores will probably be available on the Sweet Adelines web page
before I can get them out, but they will be coming later tonight to your
mailbox, too.

2001 International Chorus Semi-Finals
Thursday, October 11, 2001
Portland, Oregon - Rose Garden Arena
NOTE: If you enjoy reading these reports and would like to see
them continue in future years, please make a contribution to the
Young Singers Foundation, P. O. Box 470168, Tulsa, OK
74147-0168, and mark your donation in honor of the S.I.N.G.
Reporters.
Each contestant number and chorus name is followed by the
region #, city
and state/country, director's name, and previous record at
international
[in brackets]. The chorus counts will be included in the scores
posting later today.
Emcee: Bev Miller
Mic-Testers: Lions Gate, Region 26, Vancouver, British
Columbia, Canada; Sandy Robinson (about 70 singers)
Stage attire: black pantsuit with white panels on jacket,
irridescent maroon trim
Song #1: If you love me, really love me - one of my favorite
ballads and they do a very nice job with it; good expanded tag
Song #2: YMCA parody - It's fun to sing with Sweet Adelines;
they are having a great time with this one and the audience loves
them! As the song progresses, we go from one night a week to
three to five... but we're having fun with disco dancing and all. A
youthful chorus with a young director which has the line on
appealing to the next generations!!
1 Christchurch City, #35, Christchurch, New Zealand; Virginia
Humphrey-Taylor; [`91 (27); `95(29)]
The chorus skips on stage, jumping up and down and showing
their enthusiasm. Sure hope they have time to catch their breath
now! They've worn me out already.
Stage attire: Navy capri pants, alternating rows of red and white
velour shirts and tennies!
Song #1: I'm Alone Because I Love You - full sound and you'd
never know they are not American! I'll bet they are doing better
vowels than a lot of US choruses. Goosebumps on the
wonderful tag>
Song #2: David Wright's great arrangement of How's Ev'ry Little
thing in Dixie. A bit of "accent" creeping in here at this speed, but
the sound is super solid. "Bill Green" jumped out with a green
vest and tall satin hat. Then circles with stars appear
emphasizing the "all-American" aspects of this song. At the end,
we see the reason for the alternating rows of red and white and
a blue field with star rises on the upper ieft quadrant of the
chorus to form an American flag. What a wonderful touch for us!
The audience is on their feet.
2 Flying High Singers, #33, Nieuw-Vennep, Netherlands; Kit de
Bolster;
[first timer]
As they enter, the Netherlands fan club is making noise, wearing
windmills andwaving orange flags. They had many dropouts in
the last month of so (not wanting to leave home and come to a
country at was makes sense to me), but they are proud as can
be to perform for us and it shows!
Stage attire: Purple two-piece dress with diagonal hemline on
blouse and skirt, ruffle at skirt hem; mauve sheer sleeve on one
side and mauve under ruffle at hem
Song #1: Deed I Do Medley - Their radiant faces show how glad
they are to be here. Breathless with excitement... a slight accent
also apparent here. It always amazes me how well the
choruses from overseas imitate our sounds. Solid performance
with energetic choreography and happy faces.
Song #2: Masquerade - more American sounding here with lots
of emotion coming through. This smaller than usual chorus still
has a very nice balance and blend. Nice job!
3 Westcoast Harmony, #26, Burnaby, British Columbia,
Canada; Corinna
Garriock; [`87(14); `89(16); `92(25); `94(14); `97(14); `99(19)]
Entering with confidence... there are 3 on the front row at the
moment! (Okay that was two rows...whew!)
Stage attire: Black pants outfit with gold beaded collars making
a deep V line on their chests and sheer gold lace decorated
duster jacket with fringe on the bottom. Very classy and looks
comfy.
Song #1: Don't Cry Little Girl - I can tell I am going to run out of
adjectives. Super, solid sound. Good dynamics and lots of
tenderness, too.
Song #2: Sweet Georgia Brown - this is such a great uptune and
they definitely have a handle on this Georgia character. Sweet
and sexy and vamping - especially the front row and director.
Okay - here's my third pick for the top ten! (Guess I won't try to
"judge" today...)
4 Kansas City, #7, Kansas City, MO; Jo Kraut; [`90(3); `93(2);
`95(5);
`97(3); `99(5)]
Stage attire: black princess dress with white feather sleeves;
director has feathers on her back and hem, too.
Song #1: Oh, How I Miss You Tonight - this fine chorus does it
all very well, full loud passages, soft softs, energized phrases
throughout. From full, goosebump swipe to tender, hushed
tage, they got me!
Song #2: I Never Knew Medley - Expanded sound at the intro -
wow! Fun choreography with lots of flirty swirls and twirls.
Wonderful tag as usual. Kansas City can milk a tag!
5 Iowa City, #20, Iowa City, IA; Bev Hamilton; [`90(9); `93(20);
`95(26); `97(23); `99(27)]
Stage attire: Royal sequin fabric duster jacket over pants with
red, lime and silver sequin trim at neck.
Song #1: My Buddy - this is one of the smaller choruses, but
they have a very full sound, very warm
Song #2: Cry Baby - they have a lot of fun with this fun tune,
going from whiny to strong to testy! "It's over - AMEN"... and they
did the wave for the bye-bye part. Great sense of humor here
and solid singing as well.
6 Spokane Falls, #13, Spokane, WA; Mike Elliott; [`99(20)]
Stage attire: Royal blue dress with diagonal neckline, orange
and chartreuse accents at right sleeve and left shoulder and at
the diagonal scarf hem. Looks like dayglo colors when the lights
are down.
Song #1: I Never Meant to Fall in Love - full sound makes you
think there are even more people than you see. I love this ballad
and they really sold it.
Song #2: Who's Gonna Love Ya/Who'll Take My Place - cute
interaction with poor Mike who's directing - he's in some trouble.
Ooo - they'ver turned on each other now! They sustain the
energy in this difficult tune to the end.
7 Pride of Portland, #24, Portland, OR; Mike McCormic; [former
Blue
Lake Chorus - `90(13); `93(12); `95(18); `97(27); `99(26)]
Stage attire: Royal two-piece slinky jaquard pantsuit with sequin
fabic draped front V's in purple green or royal.
Song #1: The Bandstand in Central Park - several goosebump
episodes from the full, rich sound of this fine large chorus.
Tender touch at the tag (way to go, tenors!) is just right.
Song #2: Strike Up the Band - strong choreography without
getting too masculine - I like it! Nice pinwheel effects by the front
row. Mike disappeared into the marching chorus and popped
out in a beautiful white band uniform at the end. Sound is strong
and full throughout, even with vigorous choreo. What a fine
"new" chorus we have here!
8 Greater Nassau, #15, Franklin Square, NY; Harriette Walters;
[`92(19);
`95(11); `97(8); `99(9)]
Stage attire: Rich blue two piece gown with diagonal white
sequin hem trim on top - very classy look for our "ground zero"
chorus.
Song #1: Farewell/Just Because/Lies - Expanded sound! They
have a wonderful time with their flirty choreo and just drill that tag
- oh, a bass hanger and still more tag. Wow!
Song #2: Masquerade - every face is alight and the clean, full
sound makes you think there are twice as many singers. They
came prepared to make the finals!
9 Alamo Metro, #10, San Antonio, TX; Mary Ann Wydra; [`93(13);
`95(10);
`97(9); `99(11)]
Stage attire: Purple chiffon princess dress with full skirt and
curly hem, beaded collar overlay with swingy beaded fringe.
Song #1: Bandstand in Central Park - this is the first chorus I
heard sing this ballad - several years ago - and they "own" it and
tell the story very beautifully. Screaming overtone on tag!
Song #2: Listen to That Dixie Band - the front row bunched up
and climbed the middle of the risers and then "marched" off with
swirling skirts. Nice energy on this fun uptune.
10 St. Louis Harmony, #5, St. Louis, MO; Sandi Wright; [`78(15);
`80(17);
`86(14); `88(14); `91(16); `94(20); `96(17); `99(21)]
Stage attire: Red short sleeved satin duster over purple pants
with purple scarf - very contemporary.
Song #1: Over the Rainbow - with new intro and some nice
variations in the arrangement - very pretty.
Song #2: Looking at the World through Rose Colored Glasses -
a more contemporary treatment of this fun tune, both in the
spunky rhythm and the fun choreography. I love it when Sandi
becomes part of the chorus and they do it without her!
This is going to be some day!
Intermission
Emcee: Diane Huber
11 Surrey Harmony, #31, Croydon Surrey, England; Jenny
Lawson; [`95(30); `98(22)]
Stage attire: Red sequin blouse over tea length chiffon circle
skirt
Song #1: Sweet Adeline - once again, a pretty good job at
sounding American on this solid barbershop standard
Song #2: After You've Gone - wonderful enthusiasm on this fun
tune and some great "drama" in the choreo. Solid performance!
12 Riverport, #22, Wilmot, WI; Joe Liles; [`88(21); `91(11);
`95(20); `97(10); `99(14)]
Stage attire: Teal sequin vest with purple collar over black long
sleeved blouse, black palazzo pants; Joe has a purple satin coat
as well.
Song #1: Will It Be Me This Time? - They have really bought into
the story of this balad and you can see it as well as hear it.
Song #2: Opening Night on Broadway - Queen wave and all,
they show they are ready to be big stars.
13 Mountain Jubilee, #8, Salt Lake City, UT; Tori Postma;
[`73(5); `75(4);
`77(18); `82(11);
`84(10); `86(10); `88(7); `91(6); `95(6); `97(4); `99(4)]
Stage attire: Red Mae West gowns
Song #1: Over the Rainbow - nice vocal effects enhance the
super solid rendition of this song
Song #2: I Never Knew Medley - swingy version (oh, look - there
IS the minister man ... inflatable, of course) with major backbeat.
Once again the chorus' vocal technique and effects really add to
the overall effect. Wowee!
14 Ronninge Show, #32, Stockholm, Sweden; Britt-Helene
Bonnedahl; [`89(5);
`92(6); `95(2); `98(4)]
Wish we knew what the Swedish fan club was chanting... hope
it's clean!! ;-)
Stage attire: Black and red top with one long black sleeve over
red pants with one layer of skirts over them and wrap around
hats (you have to see it to understand - go to the web page
below and look at them).
Song #1: For the Sake of Auld Lang Syne - bright clean sound
with lots of ring. Although they are also not at full strenghth due
to the world circumstances, you wouldn't know it - full, rich sound
with wonderful expressive effects.
Song #2: Oh, You Beautiful Doll - nobody does the vamping
better - smart, sexy and sweet all at once, with that wonderfully
clean, rich sound coming throughout. Used the color change
from black arm to bare to great advantage and also made "fire"
with the chiffon skirts.
15 London, #2, London, Ontario, Canada; Julia Beadle;
[`78(12); `80(21)]
Stage attire: Black velvet straight dress with two split in the hem
over green pants; green and silver sash.
Song #1: Tura, Loora, Loora (or however that's spelled) - they
love this song and it shows. Big sound.
Song #2: It's aGreat Day for the Irish/McNamara's Band -
complete with jig, Riverdance, marching and instruments - a
celebration of this song of Irish pride. Solid singing all through
the vigorous choreography, too.
16 Bay Area Showcase, #12, San Jose, CA; Pat LeVezu;
[`88(17); `91(10);
`94(15); `96(13); `98(10)]
Stage attire: Royal sequin fabric princess dress with tea length
scarf hem, black and silver sash
Song #1: I Wish I Had My Old Pal Back Again - major overtones
in this fine ballad. Goosebump city!
Song #2: Midnight Choo-Choo - they fill the stage, visually as
well as with sound. They came to sing twice!! Loved the choreo
effects with this big chorus! Remember hearng your coach say,
"If you hold it, build it" - well, these gals can teach us all how to
do it and WHY we should!
17 Pride of Toledo, #17, Toledo, OH; Jim Shisler; [`90(16);
`93(21); `95(13); `97(7); `99(10)]
Stage attire: Red beaded top over red satin knee-length skirt;
lots of silver beads on the top.
Song #1: Oh, How I Miss You Tonight - they gave us a clinic in
the use of dynamics with this favorite ballad.
Song #2: Red, Red Robin - they did this one with a great sense
of fun and lots of energy. Cute vocal effects with the "kid again"
parts - some front row folks jumping rope. Rock and roll tag
brings the energy right to us.
18 Greater Kingston, #16, Kingston, Ontario, Canada; Elaine
Gain; [`95(25)]
Stage attire: Bright navy velvet princess dress with rhinestones
at the neckline. Silver lame ruffles under the hem.
Song #1: If You Love Me, Really Love Me - total involvement in
this beautiful ballad. A bit of "choreo" in the bridge really adds to
the story.
Song #2: Runnin; Wild - and they are, using the silver ruffles to
good effect. Lots of organized chaos that always works out
perfectly! Big, full sound!
19 Acappella Xpress, #6, Fargo, ND; Pete Benson; `75(14);
`77(17); `79(10); `82(22); `86(21); `91(22)]
Stage attire: Black palazzo pants, silver sequin fabric shell and
black paisley glitter-on-velvet bolero jacket with lining of lime on
one side and fuschia on the other.
Song #1: Oh, How I Miss You Tonight/When I Lost You - they
sound like double the people we see. Rich, full ad expressive.
Killer tag (soft one).
Song #2: Changes Medley - about 50 singers, but they're
persuading us that they are a big beautiful chorus. They had a
lot of fun singing to their man and demonstrated some vocal
excellence for us at the same time.
20 Sound of New England, #1, Bloomfield, CT; Marion
Devokaitis; `95(16); `97(12); `99(13)]
Stage attire: Red princess dress with red feather sleeves which
also have gold "feathers" in them.
Song #1: Oh, How I Miss You Tonight - another solid
performance of this ballad with lots of emotion.
Song #2: World War I Medley - They have a lot of fun with the
flirtaciousness of this uptune and the director becomes part of
the picture. Peppy and delightful.
I'm glad I'm not a judge!!
Intermission
2001 International Chorus Semi-Finals
Thursday, October 11, 2001
Portland, Oregon - Rose Garden Arena
Emcee - Kathy Carmody
21 Smoky Mountain Harmony, #23; Knoxville, TN; Nancy
Shumard; [1st International]
Looked like Nancy sprinkled pixie dust on the chorus - is magic
coming?
Stage attire: Black "pajamas" with silver trim at neck and
shoulder
Song #1: Sweet Georgia Brown - they neither look nor sound
like a first timer. Wow! Lots of exhubserance and fun choreo.
Song #2: You Are My Sunshine - a powerful ballad and they did it
justice. What a good chorus! We'll be seeing them again and
again!
22 Pride of Baltimore, #19, Baltimore, MD; Janet Ashford;
[`99(6)]
Stage attire: Red sheath with sweetheart neckline and fringe at
hem
Song #1: My Honey's Lovin' Arms - whew! Did they even take a
breath? I am exhausted and all I did was watch and listen... a
driving tempo with absolutely no let down - it seemed to
accelerate all the way to the end. This is a major contender!
Song #2: Here Am I, Brokenhearted - what can I say? They gave
us a lesson is just about everything... vocal production, finesse,
artistry... and bumps on bumps on bumps with the ringing
chords.
23 Rich-Tone, #25, Richardson, TX; Dale Syverson; [`83(12);

Stage attire: Black pants with royal sequin cutaway "coat" and
multi colored shoulder decorations
Song #1: Pal of My Cradle Days - new arrangement. Sounds
like another championship ballad to me... wow. So many
singers, yet so unified.
Song #2: Rockabye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody - another
Rich-Tone masterpiece. They are so good at this that they don't
even need Dale to keep them driving that tempo, so she just
disappeared for about half the song. The center person of the
front row did a split at the end - that was totally unecessary! Now
all of our directors are gonna want that! AHHHHHH!
24 Pride of Kentucky, #4, Louisville, KY; Debbie Hite; [`89(17);
`92(11);
`98(15); `99(12)]
Stage attire: Black drerss wuth irridescent sequin fabric inserts
in the skirt and trim at the plunging neckline
Song #1: If I Give My Heart to You - an absolutely beautiful ballad
and they really do it justice. Use dynamics with real finesse to
convey this message.
Song #2: Two Tickets/Sentimental Gentleman - Fine choreo with
lots of dance-like moves - great unity in visual and vocal. You
can tell they are hungry for a top ten spot!
25 Choral-Aires, #3, Oak Brook, IL; Joan Boutilier; [`83(10);
`86(13);
`88(12); `93(5); `95(4); `98(9)]
Stage attire: White pants with red, white and blacket jacket with a
vertical color block effect. One black arm, one white. Joan in all
red.
Song #1: Banjo's Back in Town - B-I-G sound. Lots of fun
choreo here, too. We have more contenders than we have
places, but these gals should get one.
Song #2: You Are My Sunshine - Another beautiful rendition... we
are getting to be on overlaod and definitely running out of new
ways to say WOW.
26 Jacksonville Harmony, #9, Jacksonville, FL; Ann Gooch;
[`88(18); `91(12)]
Stage attire: Baseball uniforms (white with red stripes),
complete with bats and gloves
Song #1: There Used to Be a Ballpark I saw this package at
IES, but it's stil getting me.. they are SO into the characterization!
Song #2: You Gotta Have Heart - the bats and gloves are part of
the choreo and Ann just stands at the side and watches the
chorus love this tune. The audience loves it, too - and they got to
wear comfortable shoes!
27 California Heartland, #11; Fresno, CA; Dede Nibler; [`93(14);
`97(13);
`99(15)]
Stage attire: Black velvet tea length dress with red satin collar
Song #1: Melancholy Baby - very tender treatment of this old
standard. Beautiful!
Song #2: Red, Red Robin - kid games are so cute and then the
basses take over with a big, womanly sound! The center of the
chorus is now in red hot pants! I missed it... "I'm not a kid
again!" That's for sure!
28 Queen Charlotte, #14, Charlotte, NC; Cynthia Shook;
[`79(13); `81(15);
`83(19); `85(13); `89(23); `93(10); `95(19)]
Stage attire: Black top with foot-long fringe over black pants on
the front row fringed dresses on riser folks, silver accents
Song #1: Have You Ever Heard the Swaneee River Cry - Nice
treatment on this sentimental ballad.
Song #2: Swanee - They've convinced me that this is their
favorite song and they love singing it for us! Great kick line on
the stomp!
29 San Diego, #21, San Diego, CA; Kim Hulbert; [`75(1); `78(2);
`85(8);
`88(5); `91(2); `94(7); `97(2); `99(3)]
All hundred-jillion of the chorus members are stamping their feet
in rhythm and the crowd is loving it.
Stage attire: Forest green velvet dress with rhinestone trim at
neck
Song #1: It's Great Day for the Irish - what an opening! This front
row jig goes on and on. The flags wave and we want to hear it
again!!!!
Song #2: That Tumble-Down Shack in Athlone - a masterful
demo of ballad singing... emotional, expressive use of all of
these voices, and wonderful ringing chords, loud and soft.
30 Perth Harmony, #34, Perth, Western Australia; Cathy Rainey;
[`95(24);
`99(24)]
Stage attire: Black pants, purple satin vest under a skyblue
irridescent sequin fabric coat.
Song #1: Oh, You Beautiful Doll - hearing an all "American"
sound, you are surprised to see the choreo - they think of things
we wouldn't. What a wonderful sound!!
Song #2: Sweet Adeline - what a great song to end the day.. and
they really sell it (as if they had to - we are loving them). They
have made "our" art form their own! Great singing!
While we wait for the announcement of finalists, we are forced to
listen to the Melodeers... sigh. (Such torture I could stand every
day.) In their bronzy outfits again (what's under there this time?),
they open with the theme from 2001.. A Space Odyssey - you had
to see it.
Song #1: My Honey's Lovin' Arms - just as fresh and funny as
when they won with it. Fabulous tag, as usual.
Song #2: Oh, How I Miss You Tonight - they wrote the book on
this song... especially on the tag. Wonderful.
Song #3: Renee Porzel on a beautiful solo begins... It Was Your
Song that Made Me Sing... in tribute to all directors, and today's
directors come on stage and stand in the middle of the chorus.
We stand up for the chorus AND the directors.
Song #4: Bank accounts and diamond solitaires ... bigger is
better. Who wants a Hershey's kiss when you can have two
pounds of Godiva? ... Bigger IS better - especially "Big Hair" (the
song from Showcase). This crowd is lovin' it, too.
Song #5 - new intro... again, you had to be there. Here come the
shirts and ties and "I Wanna Come Back as a Man." This time,
Jim comes out the last time carrying the baby twins! The
audience is on their feet again.
Surveying this crowd, it doesn't look to us like ANYone stayed
home. They are loud and they are enthusiastic and they loved
these choruses today. What a wonderful contest! Y'all at home
should be very proud to belong to the regions represented here
today (which was ALL regions, BTW). You should plan on
coming to an internationl someday soon and seeing this for
yourself!! Can't wait to see what's in store in the finals!

Each contestant number and quartet name is followed by the region #(s),
chapter(s), city and state/country, personnel (listed tenor, lead, bari,
bass), and previous record at international [in brackets] with rank/year
and WC for wild card; if no rank is indicated, it was a year when ranks
were not published; * = indicates Queen of Harmony in a previous quartet
42. Brillante, #8; Skyline, Velvet Hills; Colorado Springs, CO; Vickie
Maybury, Suzi Johnsen, Lynn Cameron, Cheryl Suhr; [17/00, 27/98, 1996,
1995, 13/94]
Stage attire: Long black velvet gowns with sheer sleeves.
Song #1: Cry Baby. Nice intro "Why Baby Why?" Soaring overtones on the
tag too. Nice job.
Song #2: Mistakes. Strong hanger by the bari on the tag. A very solid
performance from this experienced quartet.
43. Salt, #32; Ronninge, Stockholm City; Huddinge, Sweden; Anna Ohman*,
Annika Andersson, Anna-Stina Asplund, Susanna Gran; [20/00]
Stage attire: Purple smocks with different hem-lines. Black pants.
Song #1: Jazz Baby. What a great sound. They bring great humor,
including some rap to this song. Oh my, you should see their posture.
What a stitch. I remember enjoying this quartet last year, and I haven't
changed my mind. Very entertaining. Their showmanship scores should be
great!
Song #2: Masquerade is Over. Now they get to show their mastery of the
art form, and they do! Very nice! They may have made it. Gotta say again
that this is one of the best international quartet contests I've witnessed.
Glad I'm not in the pit where my opinion would count!
We just had a report from list member, Sally Kirby, who was helping
backstage that SALT chose their name because it was short, catchy, and
pronounced the same in Swedish and English!
44. Unplugged, #13. #26; Pacific Sound, Lion's Gate; Covington, WA;
Teresa McCafferty, Julie Hagstrom, Anna Chamberlain, Judy Pozsgay; [1st

hearing undertones?

Song #1: Red Head. Another quartet with young singers who are going to go
places.
Song #2: Secrets (another popular song today). Nicely done. The bari is
smooth as silk on her line at the end. This is another group of singers I
expect to see and hear from again at future internationals.
I have been struck today with the number of relatively young singers (early
20s to about 35) I have seen on the stage. Our organization shouldn't be
too worried about our future if these are the singers coming through the
ranks. They've all been impressive.
47. Live Wire, #17; City of Flags, Greater Harmony; Youngstown, OH;
Laura Covell, Barb Wood ,Jennifer Fogle, Marda Sopko; [1st International]
Stage attire: Royal blue dress with a chiffon skirt and beaded top.

20/99(WC), 25/98]
Stage attire: Black all sparkle pants suit.
Song #1: Dixie One-Step. Another power quartet with tons of sound. Great
energy at the ends of the phrases. They really are crystal clear!
Song #2: For the Sake of Auld Lang Syne. The softs are sustained and well
supported. They're barely audible, but they're there, and they're
powerful. Chris nails her hanger and the chord just pops!
49. Rhapsody, #26; Chinook Winds; Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Paulette
Konopczynksi, Roberta Travis, Susan McLean, Caroline Richards; [1st
International (WC)]
Stage attire: Different versions of black velvet and white satin.

Song #1: Love Eyes Medley. Well delivered with some unique interp. They

Song #1: My Buddy. Controlled sustained and supported throughout. Well
done. This is a solid, experienced unit.
Song #2: Flirty Eyes. They follow the object of teir affection across the
arena with their flirty eyes. I like the interp on this song! Great
finish. Another polished peformance. I'm done saying folks are gonna make
it, cuz I'm over the limit.
53. ConTempo, #21; San Diego, Scottsdale, Tucson Goodtime; Tucson, AZ;
Monique Manifold, Janice Blake, Debbie Lewis, Karen Meade; [11/00, 10/99,
13/98, 8/97(WC), 1996]
Stage attire: A sexy red halter long dress. Clear shoes
Song #1: He Was There at the Mardi Gras (?) I've not heard this song
before, so it's there's as far as I concerned. They own it.
Song #2: Dancing on the Streets of New Orleans (?) What fun to hear two
songs we haven't heard at all today. They tied together nicely and were
well sung. Their new lead brings a new style to this quartet. They're in

sang here. This quartet is all the way from Scotland and one is VERY
pregnant. Kudos! I'm from Washington, and I'm not sure if I would have
travelled! Congratulations!

Song #2: Jazz Medley
My apologies to all the quartets in this session. About contestant 37,
somebody (I guess that would be me) pushed some button and, well, deleted
the whole session. Instead of crying for the rest of the session (which
was high on my lists of options) I decided to re-create the song lists and
costume descriptions. You ALL were wonderful! Trust me!

Each contestant number and quartet name is followed by the region #(s),

V-line bodice with black sequins.
Song #1: All the World and Its Gold. Nice job.
Song #2: Moment I Saw Your Eyes. Sexy wiggles on this popular up-tune.

yelled "Debbie Turner is out of the office," when they were through.
Wonder if she heard us!

Laycock, Sonja Mejlaender, Patti Burklund, Dina Darrin; [WC01, 1993]
Stage attire: Dark blue dress with v-line neck and bodice.
Song #1: Laughing on the Outside/Crying on the Inside. A huge sound, but
they're able to keep it tender too with good dynamics. Dang it, they did
it again...I'm crying. These guys are my friends, so I've heard them
before, and they make me cry every time I hear this song.
Song #2: Lulu's Back in Town. Good use of dynamics on this song too.
Wow. This quartet has a huge sound. Excellent job.

Song #1: Two Tickets/Sentimental Gentlemen. Well maintained tempo on this

me believe them, and they did.
19. Risky Business, #4; Gem City, Pride of Kentucky; Crestwood, KY;
Tricia Wahl, Norma Rash, Kim Hoover, Carey Coleson; [43/00]
Stage attire: Long black skirt with bronze sparkly A-line top with short
sleeves.
Song #1: Who'll Dry Your Tears? Here's a ballad I haven't heard in a long

song. We know who was the winner in this situation! Good job.
20. From The Edge, #1; Sound of New England, CAL; Fairfield, CT; Lynne
Morgan, Susan Broudy, Penny Schroeder, Marion Devokaitis; [28/99, 38/98]
Stage attire: Blue pants suit with a multi-blue colored jacket
Song #1: How's Every Little Thing in Dixie. Fast tempo that they maintain
well. Nice reflective piece in the middle of the song for a change of
attitude, then they're right back to the fast tempo.
Song #2: All Dressed Up With a Broken Heart. The lead steps out for a
lead in "I'm all alone..." Very moving ending barely audible..."I'm still
in love with you."

Karen Streit, Heather Johnston, Brenda Follensbee; [1st International]
Stage attire: Multi-colored dress with a-symetrical hem line.
Song #1: Dixie One-Step. The lead moves to the side on the stomp then
moves back to the center. Good execution of their visual plan. They
obviously like this song a lot.
Song #2: Crying Myself to Sleep. Oops...there was a musical glitch at the
end, but I have to hand it to these women, they didn't show it on their
faces, and they ended the song with the soft tender emotion that it
deserves.
22. Spotlight, #2; Spirit of Detroit, Shoreline Sound, CAL; Madison Hts,
MI; Val Clark, LeAnn Hazlett*, Sue Snow*, Patti Britz, [1st International]
Stage attire: Long red beaded gown.
Song #1: I'm Afraid the Masquerade is Over. Boy these women know how to
energize the ends of their phrases. Lee Ann Hazlett has lungs to die for!
What a sound...and I don't think they've shown us the power behind it yet.
Song #2: I Never Knew I Could Love Anybody Honey Like I'm Loving You. And
THERE'S the sound. Holy Cow, they can fill the arena. Ring ring ring.
They're a safe bet to make the cut.
23. Fanatix, #21; San Diego, Sounds of Harmony; Diamond Bar, CA; Connie
Noble*, Darcy Newell, Sandy Shelver*, Gerry Papageorge*; [5/00, 4/99(WC)]

Song #1: Little Lady Make Believe. Softs so soft they're barely audible.
Connie decrescendos on her hanger and the audience loves it.
Song #2: Two Tickets/Sentimental Gentleman. Boy they're a tight unit.
They take the tag to an unexpected place and nail it. They're in. (How
many do I have now? I'm not keeping track!)
24. Razzcals, #12; Mission Valley, Sacramento Valley, Voice of the

[4/00, 7/99, 15/98, 16/97, WC96]
Stage attire: Lime green two-tone haltered gown.
Song #1: Oh You Beautiful Doll. Don't worry, even with the new bass, they
are still the fun, sexy, Razzcals...cute stuff in the middle of the song
with the tenor and bari making kissy noises.
Song #2: Bandstand in Central Park. They still have their great sound
too. Ping and ring ping and ring. Okay, now I'm up to 24! This quality
of quartets this year is awesome.
25. Rhythmix, #25; Rich-Tone; Kennedale, TX; Carole Ater, Pam Lauffer,
Debbie Farrell, Janice Purpura; [18/99, 18/98, 1997, 16/96, 18/95,
1994(WC), 1993]
Stage attire: Blue pants suit with blue sequined jacket.
Song #1: I Didn't Want to Fall. They've taken this song and made it their
own. I like the personal touches.
Song #2: I'm Alone Because I Love You. Beautiful lock and ring on the
final chord. A polished performance from this 7 time international
competitor.
26. Carolina Connection, #14; Queen Charlotte; Statesville, NC; Jeanne
Miller, Susan Wells, Carolyn Willis, Susan Scott; [45/00]
Stage attire: Steel blue two piece knee length skirt and top. Hem line is
a zigzag cut outlined in sequins.
Song #1: Bye Bye Baby.
Song #2: Melancholy Baby. Nice sustained softs throughout this song.
They had the spirit of the song. You can tell this quartet has been
working on their dynnamics.
27. Escapade, #9; Jacksonville Harmony; Jacksonville, FL; Paula Bartie,
Linda LiBrandi, Faye Delaney, Jan Sobolewski; [1st International]
Stage attire: Red tailored pant suits with short jacket.
Song #1: Look Me Up When You're in Dixie. They're having fun with this
song. Way to sell it.
Song #2: Sing Me a Song About Ireland. The lead is featured a couple of
times in this song, and she shines. Excellent job for a 1st time
competitor.

It's pouring buckets as we begin today! We will send four different
reports with narrative, an order of appearance for the finals, and a
separate score report.
Rita Hull, President, and Carole Kirkpatrick, president-elect, come to the
mic. Sweet Adelines International extends its thoughts and prayers to
those whose families have been affected by the tragedies a month ago. We
observe a moment of silence. We join hands, hearts, and voices in
"Harmonize the World" as Carole directs. This is, afterall, what we do.
MC for the first session is Lee Davison, (4th Edition).
Mic-Tester: 4 Star Collection (1997 International Champs).
They are wearing hot pink duster jackets with orange swirls over a pink
pants suit. Very lovely on stage. It drapes nicely on each of them.
1st song: Oh You Beautiful Doll. Marcia Starnes take the bass hanger at
the end of the song and goes even LOWER! This 2-time queen has no bottom
to her range.
2nd Song: "Here Am I, Broken Hearted." Pat Rygg sings the lead line with
finesse. They've still got it.
1. Act IV, #12, #13, #24; Pacific Empire, Pride of Portland, CAL;
Redmond, WA; Debi Thomas, Joyce Wheeler, Kathy Davi, Kim Chadwick; [1st
International]
Stage attire: Red velvet gowns with different neck lines. The necks are
jeweled.
Song #1: Joint is Jumping. SOLID. They have a big sound and they're not
afraid to use it. Nailed the tag.
Song #2: Crying Myself to Sleep. Beautifully executed. This is a great
ballad, and they sing it well. They have certainly set a high standard for
the day! I wouldn't be surprised if we see this quartet again this week.
The quartet entered through the middle of the drape from the two sides.
This is a unique way for international competition, and I LIKE it! I just
found out that a new policy allows quartets to enter from either side or
the middle, so this quartet just made history by being the first!
2. Swinglish Mix, #32, #4, #9; Pride of Kentucky, Ronninge, Spirit of
the Gulf, CAL; Louisville, KY; Eleanor Hawkins, Suzanne Harrington*, Patty
Hawley, Naima Meyer*; [2/00, 2/99, 3/98, 4/97]
Stage attire: Red sequined knee length dresses with fringe at the knee.
Song #1: Flirty Eyes. Great dynamics for an uptune. Well, they came here
as one of the favorites, and they're definitely going for it!
Song #2: What'll I Do? The basics are so solid with the group...attacks,
releases, vowel matching...exquisite tag. Unanimous SING table conclusion
is that these ladies are in! BTW, they entered the traditional way.
3. Naturally, #11; Harmony Showcase, Santa Monica, Agoura Hills
Harmony; Palmdale, CA; Christina Scott, Laura Pallas, Anne Casey, Lisa
Pallas-Kneebone; [WC01, 18/00(WC), 26/98(WC)]
Stage attire: Blue two piece dress with beaded bodice. Blue strappy sandals.
Song #1: Jazz Man. Very solid. They did some fun stuff with the
tag...haven't heard that before.
Song #2: My Buddy. This quartet has a nice sound. Good use of dynamics
on the ballad. They can also put out the sound when they need too. Good
job!
Lead Laura and Bass Lisa are sisters...what a fun journey to be on together.
4. Desert Magic, #21; Scottsdale; Chandler, AZ; Pat Hickey, Lori
Lyford, Jana Gutenson, Nancy Anderson; [26/00]
Stage attire: Sleeveless black and silver gown with keyhole at the neck.
Song #1: Somewhere Over Over the Rainbow. Beautiful lock and ring on the
final chord. Nice job.
Song #2: Bye Bye Bird. Bell chord...bye bye blackbird. Cute visual "a
funky little bird outside of my door." Now each part takes a shot at being
the bird. Cute.
CELEBRITY SIGHTINGS!!! Joe Connelly just came into the competition venue.
He's wearing shorts and it's freezing outside. Florida guy through and
through. Sitting next to Joe is Erin Howden with her two gold medals
hanging round her neck. Others in the front row: Betty Clipman, Randy
Loos.
5. Night Magic, #19, #15; Heart of Maryland, Jersey Sound, Pride of
Baltimore; Timonium, MD; Shirley Eckert, Karen Matthews, Renee Walsh, Kathy
Martin; [3/00, 6/99, 4/98, 3/97, 4/96, 4/95, 1994, 8/93]
Stage attire: Purple pants with sparkly swing jacket.
Song #1: You're in Wrong with the Right Baby. Oh my, what a solid sound.
They have more oomph behind them than most double quartets! Karen nails
her hanger at the tag and Renee does some of that fun "bari stuff!"
Song #2: What'll I Do. Wow...the top two contenders come out with the
same ballad. I am sooooo glad I'm not a judge. Shivers! Needless to say,
these guys are in. They entered center.
6. Xclamation!, #15; Evergreen; Poughkeepsie, NY; Susan Koppenhaver,
Carole Argulewicz, Jodie Rowland, Linnea Acton; [1st International]
Stage attire: Black velvet knee length with sheer long sleeves with velvet
cuffs.
Song #1: Love Eyes Medley. Nice job. They did some different phrasing
than I've heard before. I love it when quartets make a song their own.
Song #2: I'm Alone Because I Love You. Really nice job for a first time
international competitor.
7. Symmetry, #10; Houston Horizon, Alamo Metro; Richmond, TX; Janet
Rensi, Janie Macchiaroli, Kellie White, Robbin Marlow; [13/00, 14/99, 7/98,
14/97, 13/96, 17/95, 1992]
Stage attire: Solid red sequins on a knee length dress. Sexy red shoes.
Song #1: Red Hot Momma Medley....Ah...this explains the vamping on their
entrance...it moves into Red Hot Momma. It's all about attitude with this
song. Nailed the tag. Very strong performance.
Song #2: Oh How I Miss You Tonight. Soft and tender on this ballad. Then
they turn on the vamp again for their exit.
8. InJoy!, #16; Capitaland; Waterford, NY; Nancy Faddegon,Susann
McKinley, Marianne Shoen, Pamela Hyde; 22/00
Stage attire: Above the knee, sleeveless black sparkly sheath.
Song #1: Jazz Man. Big sound. Very driving up tune. Lots of energy and
enthusiasm from all four.
Song #2: For the Sake of Auld Lang Syne. Again, there is complete buy-in
from the quartet. I believe the lead. Very strong performance.
9. Voices Only, #1, #3, #5, #9, #11; Spirit of the Gulf, CAL; Wheaton,
IL; Shelly Sweet-Rubenic*, Liz Hardcastle*, Karen Breidert*, Bonnie
McKibben*; [1st International ] NOTE: Karen Breidert is a dual member,
in Regions 1 and 9 - hence five regions for one quartet!
Stage attire: Black pantsuit big white cuffs and collar.
Song #1: How's Every Little Thing in Dixie. Center entrance. This is the
quartet everyone has been waiting to hear, and they're here to entertain us.
Song #2: Pal of My Cradle Days. New intro/arrangement that was beautiful.
Masterful. They're giving a clinic on artistry and finesse. This was the
stronger of the two songs and will almost assuredly propel them into the
finals.
10. Surround Sound, #3; Choral-Aires; Hanover Park, IL; Joan Boutilier,
Deborah Miller, Amy Brinkman*, Bonnie Fedyski*; [10/00, 5/99(WC)]
Stage attire: Royal chiffon skirt with royal and silver short sleeved top.
Song #1: Dixie One-Step. They're having fun with it.
Song #2: Secrets. This experienced quartet has a very clean sound. Well
matched vowels, good resonance. Nice dynamics on the ballad. The tenor
soars "trust me." Excellent rendition of this great ballad.
11. Persuasion, #11, #21; Harborlites, Central Coast Celebration; Long
Beach, CA; Patty Cobb, Dani Avalos*, Carol Krenek, Meredith Emley; [9/00,
15/99(WC)]
Stage attire: Long black gown with two silver strands crossing the neck line.
Song #1: Piano Roll Blues. Major overtones. They have a very pingy
sound. Full and resonant.
Song #2: Beside an Open Fireplace. Barely audible tag...just lovely.
Impressive performance. I think they've made the cut.
Arrrrgggg....everyone has been so good so far.
12. Shimmer!, #11; Channelaire, Harmony Showcase, CAL; Lancaster, CA;
Bitsy Gordy-Kirkpatrick, Missy Pearce, Judy Ashmore, Colleen Wilson;
[39/98(WC), 20/97, 1995(WC), 1993(WC)]
Stage attire: Tea length black shimmery sheath with key hole, slit up
left side.
Song #1: Sin to Tell a Lie. Attitude on this song...and they nailed the tag.
Song #2: Tired of Me. Attitude change. The woman with anger now has
regret that her love has left. Again, strong ending. A solid quartet. Is
it me, or has the competition level risen a notch this year?
The New Zealanders are singing in the nose bleed section above us: "Ki-wi!"
They're excited for the next contestant...
13. Perfect Timing, #35; Christchurch City; Avondale, Auckland, New
Zealand; Dina Wickers, Toni Griffin, Sharon Wilkins, Virginia
Humphrey-Taylor; [39/00, 1992]
Stage attire: Black tea length skirt with black sequined long sleeved jacket.
Song #1: Barbershop Style. Big Sound. This might sound silly, but I'm
very impressed with the "American" vowels these ladies are singing! They
are singing an American art form with an American accent. I wouldn't be
able to tell they were foreign if I hadn't plugged it into the computer.
Song #2: My Mother's Eyes. Again, a very solid performance. Clean.
14. High Frequency, #24; Pride of Portland, CAL; Portland, OR; Connie
Norman, Lisa Brown, C.J. Smith-Jenkins, Paula Gadowski; [1st International]
Stage attire: Red pants with red shimmer top. Clear shoes.
Song #1: Hard Hearted Hannah. The v-v-v-vamp of Savannah G.A. Lisa is
definitely the vamp. Nice job.
Song #2: My Buddy. Tender at the end! The "home team crowd" is very
appreciative of this first time international contestant.

Greetings from Portland. Sue, Marti, and I (Laurie) all arrived and are in
our excellent seats...thank you Peggy Pryor and the rest of the
headquarters staff! We are seated just to the left of the judges pit, we
have a table and power for the laptop, and as we wait for the show to
begin, we're people watching to our hearts' content. So far a half dozen
or so SINGers have come to say hello.
The Rose Arena is a beautiful venue. The floor seats are all padded, as
are the the tiered sections.
Here come the Melodeers, wearing the same bronzy-brown costumes from their
Orlando finals package. 18 in the front row. Jim Arns is wearing a
traditional tux. Rita Hull comes to the stage and welcomes us to Portland.
She talks about the "healing power of music." Showcase chair Diane Huber
directs everyone in God Bless America. Pretty special to hear 8 thousand
people singing this beautiful anthem. Diane Huber introduces Jeanie
Froelich (bass of City Lights) as the first MC. She notes that Jeanie has
been volunteering at ground zero.
Jeanie introduces the Melodeers. Jim just turned 40. The chorus
celebrated by coming to rehearsal completely dressed.... oh, she meant all
in black. The chorus is selling their 5th recording and will donate
proceeds from contest week to 9/11 relief efforts.
"We'll Sing all We Know Tonight." The MC talks about Chicago, their home.
They've got their hats! "My Kind of Town, Chicago Is," "Chicago,
Chicago"...Jim disappears then reappears with a hat and does the
Charleston. The Melodeers are proud not only of Chicago, but also to be
Americans. The next song is dedicated to all those who were touched by the
9/11 tragedies. "My Country 'tis of Thee" with a soloist. It sent shivers
down MY spine! "Let Freedom Sing, let Freedom Ring."
Jim Arns comes to the mic and encourages us to get our week started by
introducing ourselves to a neighbor. Now he can't get us to shut up.
"Fever" - Total involvement from those on the risers. They ripped the last
chord!
MC talks about the absurdity of what we do every year. Who needs to be
laying on a beach in the Caribbean when you can be doing this? "You're the
Spirit of Sweet Adeline..." segue into "I love Big Hair!" Big hair makes
you feel so confident! Now the wigs start appearing! Pink, purple, and
blue right in the middle.
Renee Porzel comes to the mike..."Things to do before contest...every piece
of laundry in the house..." "Things to do before fishing trip: Buy beer."
"I Wanna come back as a Man" Jim comes across the stage in fuzzy slippers.
The rest of the chorus has shed their jackets and are wearing white shirts
and ties. Jim reappears with an apron. Choreo involves basketballs! Jim
is now stirring up some dinner. Now he's covered with flour! Very funny
stuff. The Melodeers are ALWAYS an entertaining chorus, and tonight was no
exception.
Diane Huber introduces the next MC: Judy McGovern. Judy says that there
is a reason we wear tight shoes in this organization...it's to take our
minds off how terrified we are. Judy talked to her therapist (Chris
Noteware) and learned that the true way to inner peace is to finish what
you start. So Judy finished a bag of chips and a box of cookies today.
She feels much better. Women and men really are from different planets:
we're from Venus - they're from Home Depot. Women don't look for a
perfect man, just one whose faults they like. Okay, Judy's one liners are
going way too fast for me to keep up!
The next group to perform: The Most Happy Fellows. Philly 77 SPEBSQSA
champs. The Haps are from just up the road in the Seattle and Tacoma area.
Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion come on
stage..."Follow the Yellow Brick Road." "The Merry Old Land of Oz." "We
Represent the Lyllabye League." Dorothy, a.k.a. lead Larry Hassler, and
the others are not getting along very well...I wonder if her mustache has
anything to do with it? The tin man shoots steam out of his funnel at the
end of the song. "If I Only Had a Brain" featuring the baritone, Jack
Lyon, as the scarecrow! "If I Only Had a Heart" featuring the tenor, Bob
Hodge, as the tin man. Bass, Tom Wilkie as the Cowardly Lion comes to the
mike. We can't hear his lyrics because Dorothy is being kind of well,
silly, with his tail. Great sight gags! Now he sings "If I were the King
of the Forest." "Ding Dong The Witch is Dead." The quartet has been
telling the tale of Dorothy in Oz in between songs, tying them together.
Dorothy takes a drink from a flask the tin man has been hiding. And they
end with the Hap's signature song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Exquisite.
Beautiful chord resolution "....that's where you'll find me..."
20 minute intermission...
The stage has been re-set with a drape and grand piano. Diane Huber tells
us that "a capella Gold" and the Blue Grass Student Union will be on
Showcase 2002. There are rumors flying regarding the headliner...could it
be Reba? Wynona? Naomi? Buy a ticket and find out for yourself.
Diane introduces Maureen McGovern. She is wearing a tea length black gown
with a royal color duster jacket. What a pure voice. So many singers have
a lot of affectation in their voices. There is none here, just pure sound.
Sorry, don't know the name of the first song. Maureen shares that her dad
sang in a barbershop quartet in Illinois when she was growing up. Jeff
Harris is the pianist. She shares that she is 52 years old...let me tell
you, she doesn't look it! Ohhhh...we get to hear Fever again! (Maureen
keeps trying to get the sound guy's attention!!! Too much piano in the
monitors.) The late composer Richard Rogers' 100th birthday is
approaching, and Maureen decides to pay tribute to him. She starts by
singing a medley of Rogers and Hart tunes: "This Can't Be Love....I wish I
were in Love Again..." Her range is incredible. "Out of My Dreams and
Into Your Arms." "Falling in Love with Love." "These are a Few of My
Favorite Things." She turns this song into a funky scat. The crowd is
appreciative and applauds during the middle of the song. Maureen reminds
us that she was in the movie "Airplane" as the singing nun. She sang
RESPECT, but there was a Rogers and Hammerstein song "I Enjoy Being a Girl"
that got cut! She told us about playing on Broadway and in touring shows
of "The Sound Of Music," "The Pirates of Penzance," "South Pacific" and
"The King and I." She gives us an a capella version "Hello Young Lovers."
The bummer about being "South Pacific," she tells us, is that she didn't
get to sing all the great ballads in that show...but THIS is her show, so
she sings "This Nearly Was Mine."
Maureen talks about the difference between Hart and Hammerstein as
lyricists. Hart always saw the cup as half empty, Hammerstein saw it half
full, he was an optimist..."Cock-eyed Optimist." "Climb Every
Mountain...segue... You'll Never Walk Alone." Gotta comment here about the
purity of the vowels that are floating through the Rose Garden. Good
singing is good singing is good singing. An appreciative audience rises to
its feet. Wow!!! She seems verklempt!
An opera singer has a conversation with her therapist about a jazz singer
who has taken over her body!!! How she is able to switch between these two
styles so flawlessly is beyond me.
Jeff Harris, the pianist, wrote the next song. "Why Can't I Forget?"
"Over the Rainbow.".....the piano stops, the spot in on Maureen, the mike
is down, she is singing unamplified...not sure what it was like for those
in the back of the house, but for those in front, it was pure magic.
"The Man That Got Away....Stormy Weather...Blues in the Night" Maureen
takes her shoes off in between songs and gets a round of applause from
thousands of Sweet Adelines. Sexy stuff up there on stage. She's not
afaid to move! The crowd is on its feet. What a performance!
Hope is a contagious thing..."Morning After" from "The Posiden
Adventure."...why don't we cross the bridge together and find a place
that's safe and warm...it's not too late...there's got to be a morning
after..." What timely lyrics...and again, the audience rises to its feet.
Oh wait...an encore...the Gershwins...the last song they wrote together.
Ira wrote the lyrics after George died.... "It's very clear, our love is
here to stay." She invites us to sing along. We can put on our resumes
that we sang with Maureen McGovern!
And that wraps it up for Showcase 2001. We'll be back tomorrow! Be sure
to check out the photos!
G'night,
Laurie

These will be reported in the order of appearance and I will add the
results again at the bottom. *indicates the songs that were judged as
contest numbers, onstage counts (done by me and therefore subject to
correction) include directors.
Division A (Small Choruses) - 2001 Harmony Classic
Contestant #1: River City Sound Chorus, Rockford, IL, Region #5
Director: Maureen Brzinski - 39 on stage
The chorus was dressed in pink sequin-fabric "tails" over black pants with
teal lapels and Maureen's outfit was the opposite color scheme - very
attractive!
Songs: Laughing on the Outside, Crying on the Inside*
Sweet Georgia Brown*
Over the Rainbow
Steppin' Out/Top Hat Medley
Very full sound, lots of flashy choreography!
Contestant #2: Brandywine Chorus, Berwyn, PA, Region #19
Director: announced as "Director Wanted" - actually Rick Serpico
22 on stage - The chorus wore black dresses with a pink overlay that made a
neckline and panel down to just below the waist, Rick appeared in a
baseball jacket, saying his team didn't make it to the finals, revealed a
black tux.
Songs: Before the Parade Passes By (Chorus without Rick)
Several false starts as they tried to decide what to do because
chair, "Lucy," had not planned for "Ricky" to be there...cute!
Red, Red Robin*
Over the Rainbow*
Blow Gabriel, Blow
Contestant #3: Metro Nashville Chorus, Nashville, TN, Region #23
Director: Kim Wonders - 35 on stage
Everyone was dressed as Raggedy Ann, complete with bright red "mop" wigs.
Songs: Redhead*
My Buddy*
Smile
You've Gotta Have Heart
The staging for these numbers was wonderful. The chorus and Kim never
broke character as Raggedy Ann - well, Raggedy Nancy Ann and Raggedy
Natalie Ann and so on. Their acting was superb and fitted the dialogue and
songs perfectly.
Contestant #4: Pearls of the Sound, Helsingborg, Sweden, Region #32
Director: Isabelle Malmstrom - 25 on stage
All were dressed in knee-length royal blue fitted dresses with shint teal
cape collars that also made a sort of sleeve. Very attractive! As usual
with a Swedish chorus, they all appeared pencil slim.
Songs: Don't know this first one - I wrote "I Want Muscles" - very
interesting modern tune with cute lyrics
Last Night was the End of the World*
Why Do I Always Say No*
"Swedish Hits from the 50's and 60's" - more than four parts!
VERY clean singing, very ringy sound. MC says, "We know you've seen
choruses from Sweden before but you've probably never seen one this SMALL"
- and the whole chorus squished together into an impossibly small space in
the middle of the risers - adorable!
Contestant #5: Heart of Michigan Chorus, Shepherd, MI, Region #2
Director: Susan Heimburger - 36 on stage
Black "palazzo" pants with sequin vests showing red and white stripes with
a blue field with stars on one shoulder - American flag simulation.
Songs: Believe it Or Not (I'm Walking on Air)
World War I Medley*
Don't Take Me Out on the Water
So Long, Mother*
Armed Forces Medley
These gals were happy to be here and they showed it! Very polished. We
enjoyed them a lot.
Results:
Division A (Small Choruses)
Place Score Contestant
5th 1112 Heart of Michigan (Shepherd, MI)
4th 1114 Brandywine (Berwyn, PA)
3rd 1190 River City Sound (Rockford, IL)
2nd 1196 Metro Nashville (Nashville, TN)
1st 1237 Pearls of the Sound (Helsingborg, Sweden)
=======================
Division AA (Midsize Choruses) - 2001 Harmony Classic
Contestant #1: Scioto Valley Chorus, Dublin, OH, Region #4
Director: Char Gurney - 47 on stage
Everyone dressed as "ho-bo's" but flashier with pink, lime, orange and
yellow patches. Complete with hats which were used to good effect in much
of the choreography.
Songs: I've Been Everywhere (first a soloist, then a quartet, then the
whole chorus did the hard part of naming all the places)
All Aboard the B&O Line/My Cuties Due Medley*
My Buddy*
For as Long As I Shall Live, I Will Testify to Love
(probably not the title, but close; done with a soloist
and guitar player - very moving)
Their emcee work was a good story, fitting the costumes well. Character
maintained throughout. Sang very well!
Contestant #2: Sacramento Valley Chorus, Sacramento, CA, Region #12
Director: Patty Easley - 55 on stage
Hot pink sequin-fabric vest over black shirt and pants.
Songs: Jazz Me Blues*
From the First Hello*
Home on the Range/Oh Bury Me Not Medley
Left us wanting more! Cute joke about Texas... "I thought 'home on the
range' meant you had a big spread; now I know it means 'I live in an oven.'"
Contestant #3: Greater Harmony Chorus, Gibsonia, PA, Region #17
Director: Joan Quatchak - 52 on stage
Hot pink "dance" dresses with black trim - flashy!
Songs: My Mommy's Still Singing Her Song*
Original Dixie One Step*
Rhythm of Life
Let There Be Music
They had a lot of fun with these songs, and we enjoyed them!
Contestant #4: Spokane Falls Chorus, Spokane, WA, Region #13
Director: Mike Elliott - 65 on stage
Royal blue dress with diagonal neckline and hem with orange and lime
additions. Mike wore black.
Songs: Good Ol' A Cappella, It Sounds Good to Me
That Old Black Magic (three "Vegas Showgirls" - well, they
had the head-dresses, anyway!)
I Never Meant to Fall in Love*
Who's Gonna Love Ya*
Cute byplay between the director and a pregnant member on that last song!
What a good chorus! Strong, full sound.
Contestant #5: Jacksonville Harmony Chorus, Jacksonville, FL, #9
Director: Ann Gooch - 58 on stage
Red and white striped baseball uniforms
Songs: There Used to Be A Ballpark*
It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday (solo)
You've Gotta Have Heart* - wonderful choreography with bats
and gloves!
Between the first two songs, two members did the classic "Who's on first?"
routine and they did it VERY well! It's easy to see why this package
caused such a stir at the Region 9 contest - it was super!

20. CoverGirl (Odessa, Tampa & Temple Terrace, FL)
"Do You Really, Really Love Me"
"I'm the One You're Lookin' For"
The creativity of the girls is evident in their costumes - most were very
elegant, with a few "character" costumes appearing also.
Being a big fan of comedy, my favorite bits were when Tone Appetit (dressed
in chef's aprons and hats over their black dresses) pulled out a spatula
which turned out to be the pitch pipe, and the cute song "Around the
Corner, Under the Tree" by Destination (dressed in snappy Women's Army
uniforms). The quality of this contest keeps improving, making it truly a
venue for "rising stars!"
The awards went to:
3rd place: Ambrosia (Basking Ridge, Gillette & Warren, NJ)
2nd place: CoverGirl (Odessa, Tampa & Temple Terrace, FL)
1st place: Backchat (Cashmere High School, Christchurch, New Zealand)
Yep - those Kiwi's came a long way and showed us how to do it!!! They sang
better "American English" than some of US in the United States do!
Everyone else is tied for fourth place in my book!
