I think you and Dave sans drummer would work better just because it's a haul, parking is limited and you only get 4-5 songs. Also, if you have a speaker you could use as a monitor, bring it because they don't have one and it was hard to hear anything on the stage.

Jose

just writing to let any interested musicians know about this open mic
in lauderdale. it's basically an open mic contest, with the winners
from each week appearing at a final open mic at the end of nine weeks.
last night was the first week...and JoMiCo kicked ass! that's right, we
walked away with a ticket to the finals, and $15 off of our bar tab.
the winner of the finals gets a "recording session". we don't know what
that means and don't really care, i guess. the other winner from last
night was Brandon O'Hara, who did the solo thing with his guitar and
his original songs. didn't get his email, but i'm sure he'll be a
tcmusic member very soon. anyway, we've layed the groundwork for the
other Stuart musicians to represent Martin County down in the big city.
so get down there and show 'em what we've got! it starts around 7:30
and goes 'til 11:00. check out the link to Tavern 213 on openmikes.org.

true enough, but if ppl would say NOT live in a flood area, if ppl
would not say, impose themselves on nature, if ppl like say, walt
disney hadn't drained wetlands for amusement parks. Don't get me
wrong, i say live where you wanna, but exspect a reprocution when
you screw with nature. If the locks had not been installed, the
flood water would run off as it's suppose to and nature would be
just fine. It's the ppl that screw it up, not floods. You can't tell
me that the 1000's that died in a flood, didn't know it was flood
plain. With an already overpopulated state in exsistance, i hate to
say it, but i'm on the side of the natural.

if only it were that simple . . . remember, the dikes were not put there with the intent to harm. It was the death of thousands of people near the lake that prompted the building of the dikes. The BEST science of the time went into the design, but unfortunate results came with it :-( :-(   We have a better idea of how the system works today but still don't know how our actions will play out long term.
Realize this too, the brackish/salty ST. Lucie "estuary" was historically almost always FRESH except for after hurricanes when the inlets opened up. Once we started keeping the inlets open all the time we destroyed the fresh water ecosystem that existed here then . . .

The ppl in charge should be assassinated!!!! Sounds as if this
henderson fellow needs to get another job, sounds like he's given
up. What a crock!

By Suzanne Wentley
staff writer - Stuart News
June 27, 2005

The oysters are dying. Estuary's water quality is rapidly
deteriorating

Fish in the St. Lucie Estuary have rotting fins and early signs of
lesions. The water under the Palm City and Evans Crary bridges —
which health officials are warning residents to avoid — is as cloudy
and as dark as a thick cup of coffee. Water quality in the river has
bottomed out, and it's only a month into the rainy season.

"It's pretty bad," said Paul Gray, a scientist with Audubon of
Florida. "And it's not going to get better. It's going to get
worse." State scientists and water managers have been forced to
recognize something St. Lucie Estuary advocates have feared for
years: The river is on the brink of a crisis. By next month,
freshwater discharges from a high Lake Okeechobee will likely
increase to constant, heavy releases that will help protect the
Herbert Hoover dike — but continue to erode the health of the St.
Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon. Recent heavy rains — predicted
to continue throughout the summer — have added to the river's
problems, which include a persistent presence of fecal coliform
bacteria that has continued to puzzle health officials. River
advocates are beginning to compare the situation to 1998, when a
massive fish lesion outbreak affected the local economy and spurred
a public outcry that resulted in the development of a $1.2 billion
restoration plan. But those reservoirs and water cleansing
facilities won't help the river now, said Kevin Henderson, executive
director of the St. Lucie River Initiative. "It won't do anything
for us this year or next year or the year after," he said. "Things
look grim."

"Estuary is trashed"

With Lake Okeechobee reaching 15.53 feet above sea level last week,
water managers worry the normal summer rains will threaten the dike,
which federal inspectors start monitoring when the lake reaches 16
1/2 feet. It rose more than a foot and a half in the past month —
and the rainy season traditionally lasts until October. The high
levels, along with the muck stirred up by last year's hurricanes,
have contributed to the death of nearly all of the lake's submerged
plants. Although the normally brackish St. Lucie Estuary is now
almost completely fresh, water managers said discharges will likely
increase. "The releases aren't going to really change anything. It's
already bad. We're not making it any worse." said Andrew Geller, an
engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers in Jacksonville. "We're in
a very much flood control mode." By July, discharges are expected to
flow at 2,500 cubic feet — or 18,701 gallons — a second out of the
St. Lucie Locks, further worsening conditions in the estuary. Still,
Henderson said the impact will be even worse if the deep lake loses
more fish habitat and has more algae blooms.

Fish lesions reported

Water quality testers have recorded the high turbidity, low salinity
and low dissolved oxygen in the river — but it's the dwindling
wildlife that bothers Stuart resident Joanne Powers. "Times like
this, the pelicans are not fishing in front of my house," said the
volunteer water tester. "If you can't see down in the water, they go
somewhere else." The fish, too, are beginning to suffer. Michael
Kandrashoff, a scientist who has collected data on fish in the St.
Lucie Estuary for eight years, said he's noticed an increase in sick
fish since the estuary turned fresh. Rotting fins are the first
signs of stress he's recorded in larger numbers, but he's been
hearing more reports of lesioned fish lately, he said. There also
have been fewer catches of sand croakers and other fish that are
normally in the estuary this time of year, he added. "Every year, it
gets worse," he said. "Slowly, it's taking its toll on all the life
that's in there."

Apathy a concern

It could soon be a problem for the businesses and fishing guides
that rely on the estuary, said Vera Locke, the executive director of
the Marine Industries Association of the Treasure Coast. "People
don't want to go boating right now," she said. "I would not
recommend eating any fish caught in the river right now. It's not
good for anybody." At least one parent expressed worry to the
Environmental Studies Center in Jensen Beach because camp
participants are continuing to net in the river. But water tester
Phil Tafoya said there still are some sections of the estuary that
aren't as bad. His dock is far enough away from both Taylor Creek
and the St. Lucie Canal to avoid damaging runoff — for now, he
said. "You don't have the real brown coffee color. That's just
nasty," said the Port St. Lucie resident, who's been testing the
water for a decade. "For as many years as we've been involved, you'd
think by now they could correct some of the problems."

AND THIS IS THE COMMENT THAT JUST BURNS MY BLOOD!!!!!

Henderson said the difficult balance between flood control and
ecological health is made worse by what seems to be an increasing
apathy to the river's plight. "When the oysters are dead and the
fish are dying from lesions and you can't swim in the river because
it's a health hazard and there's no public outcry, what do you have
to work with?" he said.

NO PUBLIC OUTCRY? GOD DAMMIT!...MAYBE HE SHOULD LOOK INTO

OK,
so we suck for not being at the refuge on sunday's lately
but david's been moving into a new home and it has studio space so
we've been setting up that when we have any spare time. Also, we'd
love to see some of ya out at the orange door on saturday. This is a
great place for sound & lights. A really good place to see live
tunes & anyone out b4 11pm gets a free 80 min komatoast cd, so what
do yasay? I mean, it's a saturday night and good tunes. Other than
the fact that we do original material for about 3/4 of the night,
the covers we do are not your run of the mill material....dave
mathews, janes addiction, tool, mad season, jethro tull, pink floyd,
ect. so don't miss thisone or you'll just hate yourself forever!

Greetings,
Last night at Suny D'Lite Cafe was awesome. We had a little rain delay
but came back and played until they kicked us out. If you haven't been
to the cafe yet, check it out. It's a nice, little, very relaxing
place with all kinds of healthy items aaaaand, rumor has it they will
be getting a licor license in the near future. Also, JoMiCo just
hooked up a gig Saturday night, May 28 at Chuck's Seafood Restaurant
in Fort Pierce, from 9pm to 1am. It's a cool spot right on the water
and should be fun as hell. Chuck's is located at 822 Seaway Dr., Fort
Pierce, FL 772-461-9484. For those of you that prefer to stay close to
home on Saturday for some live music, check out Komatoast at Carmody's.
Much love and respect,
Jose

Hello TC Music community,
This last week was jam packed with music. On Wednesday, 2/3rds of
JoMiCo (work sucks, doesn't it Mike?) rolled down to Ft. Lauderdale
and played an Open Mic down there. The place is called Fat Cats. It's
hosted by a cool dude named Ryan. Sign up starts at 11:30pm (yep,
it's a late one). On Thursday, JoMiCo played Jammin' Jensen at Suny
D'Lite Cafe. Thanks again to those who showed up. Quick reminder,
we're doing it again next Thursday, May 26. Friday we got a chance to
roll down to Lake Park to check out Komatoast at the Orange Door.
Good job dudes. These guys didn't miss a step. The venue has a killer
sound system and a lot of potential. Saturday, Amanda Birdsall sat in
and as a vocalist with this really trippy band down in West Palm
(Amanda, what is the band called?). They had bass, harmonium, sitar
and cajon drums. Powerful stuff. Later on Saturday, got a chance to
catch instrumental duo Wade & Jamie doing their dinner crown debut at
Osceola Street Cafe. Later later on Saturday, caught Nokaoi
(spelling?) at Wahoo's. They play original and cover reggea tunes.
The place was packed. Had a blast. Next up, I'd like to welcome a new
member to our online community. What's up Jeff? I met this cat
through John Lang at the Open Mic at the Refuge. He's got some cool
original music and a great voice. Make sure to check him out
sometime. Future stuff?
JoMiCo at Sunny D'lite, Thur. May 26
Komatoast at Carmody's, Sat. May 28
Nokaoi at Shrimper's, Sat. May 28 (I think Sunday too)
JoMiCo at Sounds Good Music, June 3
Anything else? Post it!
Much love and respect,
Jose

JoMiCo would like to thank all of you that came out and showed love
last night at Suny D'Lite. They're having us back! Next Thursday, May
26, 7-10pm. Also, on June 3rd, Friday, we're playing at Sounds Good
Music in Port St. Lucie. It's this really cool vinyl and CD store on
Port St. Lucie Blvd. Don't forget Komatoast's gigs coming up. Peace
out.
Jose
