Using these triads is a good place to start, but look towards adding sevenths, ninths, sharp nines, etc. while omitting roots and/or other notes. Here's a lick to try: say you're in the key of A. Play a one measure lick, then answer it with an A7#9 in the next measure. Voice it C#-G-C natural on the D-G-B strings up in the 11th-12th-thirteenth frets. When the chords move to the D (IV) chord, play another one-measure lick (maybe even the same lick as before) and answer it with a D 13, voiced C-F#-B. It's the same as the A7#9, just moved down one fret. Then if you can fit it in, do the same lick/chord trick on the E (V) using an E7#9 voiced G#-G-B on the A-G-B strings.
Hope this helps!
