Hey friends,

Just got some great news that I wanted to share.  The USA Songwriting Competition called the office today to notify us that I won two awards in the 2002 competition.  My song S.S. Bathtub won first place in the children's category, and Lens Cap won the runner-up spot (or second place) in the Folk Category. 

This kind of thing is really affirming, of course, and I'm feeling pretty good about it.  Apparently I won  $2300 in cash and prizes (the 2 for the first place, the 300 for the runner-up), too, so that's fun, though I have no idea yet what they are.  ;-)  Mainly, though, it feels really good to be recognized by peers in such a huge international contest, and know that it has nothing to do with 'whoyaknow,' but is judged solely on the songs.  It's a strange thing to have one's job be promoting one's own music.  It's easy to get self-involved and lose perspective all together. Some days I don't know if these songs are any good or not.  Sure is encouraging to get this kind of feedback.

Anyway, we'll put something on the web site about it soon, but I wanted to let y'all in the 'inner circle' know and celebrate with you now.

Today's warmer than yesterday in western NC, and the whole world seems to be melting.  The snow was beautiful and Deanna didn't have to go teach, so we had a lovely cozy day here.  No less than three games of Scrabble.  Today I went to the local juvenile prison to talk with kids there about music and life.  It was a good morning already, and I came home to this news.  Life's good.
