The rage of the Stage Players are looking for artists of ambient
music to submit samples/whole CDs of their work to be considered for
inclusion in a fall stage adaptation of three, dark, original,
Grimms' folk Tales. We are actually having a variety of artists
submit work. The company will decide upon which one(s) that they
feel best suit the project. If you're interested in submitting
something for consideration, please read the short folk tales
provided on the links below...

   These are links to the three tales which are being adapted into
plays and that comprise the entire show, Never After: Death and the
Brothers Grimm. The overall theme of the production (for the
Halloween season) will be death. PLEASE NOTE that The Rage of the

SignalSuite looks like a nice program, but $40 !!? Ouch!

AudioEase used to offer the free Make A TestTone program for OS 9, but the
OS X version is now apparently $30. I have the OS 9 version (which should
work in OS X too) and its license says it is freely distributable. I would
be happy to send a copy to any interested parties. (It is non-realtime
only. The OS X version has many new features ...)

I know there are other GUI programs out there as well for Macs. But you can
also use any of the popular and free synthesis languages to create sine
tones of arbitrary precision (with or without enveloping to avoid clicks).
Free and cross-platform programs include:

Csound          http://www.csounds.com
SuperCollider   http://www.audiosynth.com/
Nyquist         http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~music/nyquist/
CLM             http://ccrma.stanford.edu/software/clm/
etc.

Of course, each of these programs has a significant learning curve, but
producing sine waves in each is relatively simple.

I wanted to say hello to the other members of the PCAC and this list. I
live in Columbus, Ohio, but I thought that is probably close enough to
Pittburgh to join the discussion here :)

I am a composer working out of my home here in Columbus and I have very
little contact with others doing similar work. Most of my music in the last
7-8 years could be called "ambient" -- it tends to be long and drawn out
with only small changes over time. Some of the works are Eno-style ambient
while others are more "ambient noir" soundscapes or minimalist explorations
of "microsound."

I am not aware of any ambient or experimental music scene here in Columbus.
I suppose there are people out there making music in these genres, but I
have never met or heard of any :) (There did not seem to be much going on
in Toledo, OH where I used to live either). So I am looking to find out
about the music that all of you are creating.

How would you describe your own music? Do you perform it live? (My own
music is all tape music at this time). How are you promoting your music and
participating in your local music scenes?

Thanks :)

I just wanted to welcome Peter, our newest member. I have been
working on our prposal for a grant, and I will share the details of
this project with everyone who is local (in person) over the next few
days. We have many participating members who have not yet joined this
site, and their skills are wide. This is, of course on the business
side of The PCACr , and includes our PR people, sound engineers, etc.

I anyone feels so compelled, I would love to start recieving hard copy
submissions of compositions in cd format (or DVD if you have
accompanying visuals), because I am going to start archiving our
materials for future projects. This means our overseas members as well.

Please e-amil me direct if you have any questions, or feel free to
send your materials straight to my house:

Actually it's a PMD671, which adds 24/96 audio and better mic preamps than the PMD670.  It seems nice so far (I've had it for about a month).  I'm not 100% sure about the mic pres in it yet though.  And though dual XLR mic inputs and dual RCA line inputs are nice, I wish it also had a 1/8" stereo mic in for a consumer stereo MiniDisc-type mic.  Sometimes dragging a pair of XLRs around can be a little much.

DREAM HOUSE by Walter Cianciusi

I produced a Max/MSP (IRCAM) algorithm that allows a computer user to
switch, in real time, through several La Monte Young's sine-tone
compositions.
The user simply needs
1. to choose a composition from a menu;
2. to insert a base frequency;
3. to press a start button.
A series of virtual sinusoidal oscillators (perfectly in phase) will
reproduce the chosen piece.
On the screen the user will find indications about the exact tuning
ratios implied and about the frequencies generated by the machine
starting from the chosen base frequency.

At the moment the algorithm includes the following 23 compositions:
Composition 1960 #7;
First Dream Of China;
Second Dream Of China;
Third Dream Of China;
Fourth Dream Of China;
Pre-Tortoise Dream Music;
The Obsidian Ocelot;
Freeman Commission;
Oldenburg Commission;
Scull Commission;
Drift Study 5 VIII 68;
Drift Study 31 I 69;
Drift Study 14 VII 73;
First Dream 1980;
Second Dream 1980;
Third Dream 1980;
Fourth Dream 1980;
The Opening Chord;
The Magic Chord;
The Magic Opening Chord;
The Romantic Symmetry;
The Base 9:7:4 Symmetry;
The Prime Time Twins.

The algorithm is Windows and Macintosh compatible, and you can download
it for free from my website:
http://homepage.mac.com/cianciusi/FileSharing15.html
On the downloaded folder you will also find a free Max/MSP Runtime 4.5
version to read the algorithm.

With your collaboration I could improve my work, add other compositions
and let the algorithm conforms to your expectations.

Thank you very much for your attention.

Hello everyone-

I just had a meeting with the Mattress Factory here in Pittsburgh, and they are
allowing us to run events in their new cafe every Thursday evening. Anyone
who would like to participate can either respond to me via e-mail, or can call
me at home- 412-321-4253.

There is no deadline, but as soon as possible would be great. The only
requirement is that it focus primarily on ambient minimalism for the time being.
Field recordings are also welcome, as is mellow glitch. For the future, we
also discussed events that might use a whole section of the mattress factory
for installations and soundworks. That way, our overseas members can also
participate.

I'm also meeting with a gentleman named Tom Mondell to start-up our
webcaster on Monday. We will then be able to broadcast our performances
regularly as our events grow in scope and regularity.

I hope all is well, and I look forward to getting everyone's submissions
together over the next two weeks. Please copy and paste into another e-mail
and send to any appropriate parties who might want to work with us.

I just want to share with everyone the small progress that is already
being made with this group. First, I have started the ball rolling
on getting 501c3 status for The Consortium. this takes about a year
to finalize, but I can begin creating a schedule and a budget while
seeking long term legitimacy for our organization.

Response from different institutions has been very promising, both
local in Pittsburgh and in New York. I have been speaking with
funding organizations and curators about us, and everyone is very
supportive and expressing interest in working with us. I will be
speaking with the director of a local museum soon, to see if we can
organize an event there in the near future. I will keep everyone
posted.

Jeremy Boyle of Pittsburgh Soundscape has contacted me from Italy.
His e-mail is sporadic due to traveling, but he has also expressed
interest in working with us. This makes me very happy, for it was
Jeremy and his sister Jamie who got me to submit my compositions for
their first public performances. Paris Detroit (a.k.a. Jason Boggs)
has been helping me remaster some of them so that I may one day
release them.

I have also invested in a new computer to run this project more
effectively and begin video/audio editing professionally. I will
also use it to keep digital archives of all submissions for future
music projects. That's all I have to post for the time being. I
just want you all to know how seriously I take this venture, and I
hope you all find this as exciting as I do.

The best to everyone, and please keep passing the word along.

a short introduction post.
accompanied by a hand waving hello. if you look
closely you can see it.

i am a pianist--for the past four years or so i have
been working in an electro-acoustic context as part of
clairaudient. we are a collective of musicians and
poets (at this point) based in philadelphia. you can
check out some of our work here:

www.clairaudient.org

for the best examples of the electroacoustic model
with all cylinders firing, look for the autopoeisis
links and check out 28 august b or 31 august. the
other recordings--like the alternative soundtrack for
"decasia"--aare smaller unit projects.

we work mostly in constraint-driven improvisation.
sound-wise, we use radios, live processing, a couple
analog synths--i have been working out techniques on
piano that use it as a harmonic generator, developing
ways to bend pitchs, generate microtonal intervals
between pitches, etc. without requiring retuning (tho
someday....someday i want to start retuning pianos and
see what results). the poets work in a variety of
formats, mostly procedurally oriented, moving
gradually toward sound poetry. generally, we try to
present a wall of sound that forces the audience to
make selections within it, with the result
(hopefully--one never really knows) that there are
multiple events happening at the same time.

in addition to what is on the site, we have done a
resoundtracking of svankmeyer's "alice" and a few
other projects--the recordings did not come out, so
they are not posted.

we are in the process of mutating and will probably be
dormant until early fall.

thanks for the info on the feedback festival: if
things go according to the plan i have germinating in
my head, that might be the point at which we
resurface.

pleased to see the list--hope this finds all well in
all sectors.

stephen

This was posted on the Philly Ambient site, so I thought I would pass
it along:

i thought you all might find this interesting/useful:

This is a listing of frequencies that various parties have claimed can
affect the human mind or body in some way. The following sorts of
frequencies are included :

* Brainwave Frequencies - These are frequencies associated with
various mental states. Using brainwave entrainment, you can coax your
brainwaves to a certain frequency, and in doing so, achieve the mental
state associated with that frequency.

* "Healing" Frequencies - These are frequencies that various parties
claim could be used to heal illnesses of different kinds, or stimulate
some region of the body (chakras). The medium used to do this varies -
some of these parties used devices that generated EM fields which were
applied to a precise part of the body, while others used vibration and
sound. (I don't have any experience with using EM fields - most of my
personal toying about with this stuff uses a sound medium.)

* Natural Phenomena Frequencies - This includes natural frequencies
that occur in nature [Schumann's Resonance, for instance], as well as
sound tones calculated from the revolution/orbit of the various
planets. The sources of these frequencies claimed that they could
affect humans in a variety of ways.

the list is here:

Hello to all included in this group.

My name is Duane Pitre and I've recently joined La Monte Young's Mela
Foundation Yahoo Group...which led me here...again where I'm a new
member. I hope to
meet others here creating interesting sounds and also meet some folks
in Pittsburg, where
I'd like to come perform with them.

I'm resident of Brooklyn, NY as of Sept 04. I've been performing and
recording drone/
ambient/minimalist/experimental/etc. sounds under the moniker
Pilotram for the last 5
years. I've played in several bands before and during but kept
finding myself back to
Pilotram. You can see/hear more Pilotram at www.pilotram.org.

Those of you in the NYC area should make it out to the upcoming
Ontological-Hysteric
Theater's "Noise: Seen and Unseen" Sound Festival. Below is a
schedule of performers
along with dates and info. It should be great. The Pilotram:ensemble
(myself w/ an ever
rotating ensemble; with this show consisting of guitar, several reed
and string instruments
and keys) will be performing a 20 set on Wed July 20th at 10:30pm.
The set will consist of
an "ensemble drone" followed by a minimalist composition.

You can here a couple different live recordings of past "ensemble
drones" at
www.pilotram.org/sound.php (under the "live" section). thanks for
your  time...fest info
below...

Sorry for the double post - I've deleted the inadvertant duplicate
message.

Thanks to Charles for getting this going. Looking forward to hearing
about lots of music.

I've just posted a new piece called "Drift Dhikr" to
http://mysterybear.net/article/12. As usual, there are MP3 and OGG
versions for download, as well as the Csound orchestra/score.

   From the web page: "Pitches start at the perfect fifth and
simultaneously glide up to the octave and down to tonic, and an
everchanging chord emerges from the reinforced difference and summation
tones. A slowly changing ambient landscape of relative consonance and
dissonance."

The title alludes to La Monte's Drift Studies, and this piece is also
built from sine tones, but otherwise it's quite different.

Comments are welcome.

Thanks to everyone for showing interest in this group. I have many
big plans in the works, and i look forward to sharing good news with
you all in the near future.

In the meantime, there are over 100 links on this group now. please
let the group know what new links you post so that we may all check
them out right away.

Today I posted a new folder for Events and Festivals. These are
recurring projects that usually take place annually. I hope to post
one in here for Pittsburgh pretty soon. Please do not be shy in
posting information or links that you think are important or missing,
especially if it pertains to your own material.

Once the main website is up, this will serve as our discussion and
our announcement page, so it will never cease to be relevant. It
should also serve as a sort of interesting electronic document about
how this group will evolve, and how our personal visions and careers
will expand. I believe that even though minimalism, ambient, and
ambient IDM are all different genres, the ideals remain the same and
it is important for these styles to continue to hybrid by learning
from each other. I see ourselves as individuals being the living
proof of this philosophy.

Now on with the show...
