What does New Zealand, Ohio and Alaska have in common?

Every New Yorker knows the answer: lousy bagels!

But now, thanks to our friends at Infraction Records, there is a
better answer:
                    Zimiamvian Night 2

Yes, that prankish noise-meister, Zimmy Knight, is back at it again
with the latest in his wild "grooves and moves" experimentation. And
mad scientists make pretty good music, too!

You'll find your feet comin' alive once the needle hits these
grooves, it's just a shame it's a compact disc.

It all started when our hero, Zimmy Knight, had come off a successful
run at the A-Go-Go Club, high atop the Howard Johnson's just outside
Fargo, North Dakota. His e-mail penpal buddy, Christopher Orczy, New
Zealand's Harmonium King, had completed his year-long
extravaganza "Harmonium Diaries" and was looking for remix-ers to
help mutate his tracks. Faster than zombies looking for something to
kill, the slots to do this were full but Zimmy Knight had found a
berth! October, The Month Nobody Wanted, was his assignment, CO
said "OK, punk, re-make my day!".

Back home in Ohio, Zimmy set to it, wasting and losing months by
cleaning out the gutters, taking out the trash, doing dishes, making
the beds, setting and emptying the innumerable mouse traps and
generally completely avoiding any slightly productive work on it.
Finally, in a fit of pique over the furnace filters, Zimmy popped off
October The First Is Too Late, a long-form piece using CO's harmonium
mixed with some other sounds he can't even remember putting in
there. Ta-da! And the final mixdown was accomplished by Zimmy
falling asleep during the crucial finish, 23 minutes into it, and his
head pushing the various sliders to a miraculously perfect
configuration to complete the piece!

Luckily, those pesky face marks will eventually come out.

Now, Alaska, is the home of Walt Tape, a photogenic guy who likes to
takes cool photogravatures. ZN 2 will feature his work as cover art,
the perfect compliment to the music inside.

So, here it is, a new Zimiamvian Night CD, titled Zimiamvian Night 2,
with 2 pieces:
A Little Flower In October, the remix piece from CO's Altered Days
remix project and
October The First Is Too Late, the long-form worth waiting for (we
hope).

Total length: 1 hour

Please excuse the cross-posting if you receive this more than once.

I just want to announce the availability of a new composition of mine
available on my page at Ruccas.org

<http://www.ruccas.org/index.php?Anthony%20Kozar>

"Differentiated Abstractions" will be the first of several new "stretch"
pieces -- a collection that I plan to call "POD Ambient 2" (a creative name
for the follow-up to my "POD Ambient" collection ;)

Once again, I have taken a sound sample about 5 seconds long created with
the software Argeïphontes Lyre using its dynamic frequency modulation
algorithm. This time though I granulated the sample first with th0nk0+2,
creating a chaotic and very dynamic "narration" of about 40 seconds before I
stretched the sound with MacPOD. I also stretched the th0nk output to three
different lengths (six times, nine times, and eighteen times). The final
composition was mixed using Csound 5's diskin2 opcode by layering the three
stretches and looping the shorter ones to match the length of the longest.

The result is engulfing, multi-granulated sound with audible canonic
elements. (That sounds suitably "academic" ^_^ )

If you take a listen, I appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi all,

I have a new ambient piece of music in progress right now. The piece is
called "FMscape no.1" and is entirely composed of sounds created by a
complex frequency modulation instrument in Csound. I am hoping to get some
feedback from other computer musicians before I finish it. I am looking for
constructive criticism on the effectiveness of the piece.

In particular, I am hoping that people might comment on the following
questions that I have been asking myself:

1. Are the sounds too harsh to listen to for a long time? If so, how can
they be made more pleasant (filtering?, chorusing?, etc.) ?

2. Are the sounds and the musical materials interesting enough for a piece
that is almost 15 minutes long, or should it be shortened?

3. Do you think that it needs anything else?

An MP3 and the Csound orc/sco are available from my Yahoo Briefcase:

http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/akozar@sbcglobal.net/

Click on the "Music" folder to find the files FMscape1.mp3, fmscape.orc, and
fmscape1.sco. The Csound files require version 5.01 to render because it
uses a new opcode that is only available in the latest version.

Thanks very much!

"A drone of varying densities built from layers of complex
justly-intoned chords with scintillating harmonics."

I made this with Csound 5.0 RC2 (nice!). It has something to do with La
Monte Young's Opening, Magic and Magic Opening chords, but it doesn't
use those chords literally. No sine waves were harmed in the making of
this music.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCT:
NOISY is a four letter word. The most unwanted byproduct of population
is noise. Noise is a weed to be plowed under, for hope of a flower
later, that a planet so wealthy with a resource that is pungent with
chaotic bits of info could rhetorically sacrifice it to the distant
surroundings, to the recent past. Noise is a food like oxygen, or is a
piece of information like the mail.
Noise has entered our waking conscience, forcefully & can not be
relinquished to the un/sub conscience. There lies within noise a manner
of empowerization that is both organic & suggestive. Noise constitutes
all that remains undigested, confused & in opposition.
Noise is the diamond of the future, mined & recycled for its luster,
for its clues to the nature & construction of infinity. Noise
reproduces in all directions with nucleic passion, with spidery
unpredictability.

The rage of the Stage Players are looking for artists of ambient
music to submit samples/whole CDs of their work to be considered for
inclusion in a fall stage adaptation of three, dark, original,
Grimms' folk Tales. We are actually having a variety of artists
submit work. The company will decide upon which one(s) that they
feel best suit the project. If you're interested in submitting
something for consideration, please read the short folk tales
provided on the links below...

http://www.ucs.mun.ca/~wbarker/fairies/grimm/073.html (The Wolf and
the Fox)

http://www.ucs.mun.ca/~wbarker/fairies/grimm/205.html (God's Food)

http://www.ucs.mun.ca/~wbarker/fairies/grimm/185.html (The Poor Boy
in the Grave)

These are links to the three tales which are being adapted into
plays and that comprise the entire show, Never After: Death and the
Brothers Grimm. The overall theme of the production (for the
Halloween season) will be death. PLEASE NOTE that The Rage of the
Stage Players are a completely self-sustaining, not-for-profit
organization, and can offer only exposure and recommendations. This
is on a strictly voluntary basis only. Please contact us directly at
rageofthestage@... for more information.

SignalSuite looks like a nice program, but $40 !!? Ouch!

AudioEase used to offer the free Make A TestTone program for OS 9, but the
OS X version is now apparently $30. I have the OS 9 version (which should
work in OS X too) and its license says it is freely distributable. I would
be happy to send a copy to any interested parties. (It is non-realtime
only. The OS X version has many new features ...)

I know there are other GUI programs out there as well for Macs. But you can
also use any of the popular and free synthesis languages to create sine
tones of arbitrary precision (with or without enveloping to avoid clicks).
Free and cross-platform programs include:

Csound http://www.csounds.com
SuperCollider http://www.audiosynth.com/
Nyquist http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~music/nyquist/
CLM http://ccrma.stanford.edu/software/clm/
etc.

Of course, each of these programs has a significant learning curve, but
producing sine waves in each is relatively simple.
